Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Solano (7:36)
Review: MCMLXV welcomes back Analog~1 for a third outing here. It is an alias of JS Zeiter and one that is reserved more for esoteric and electronica tracks following notable outings on labels such as Furthur Electronix, Meandyou and We're Going Deep. 'Mirage' kicks off with melancholic pads and dubby chords over crisp minimal drums that sink you into a reverie. That vibe continues through 'Virtual' and 'Haunted' which care both sophisticated atmospheres with subtle electro-tinged rhythms and quietly emotive pads. 'Solano' closes down with another icy and cavernous space that is filled with meaningful synth craft to make for another classy EP.

Sorrow (7:49)
Sorrow (Space dub) (7:34)
Review: Having been friends and occasional studio collaborators for the best part of a decade, M>O/S Recordings main man Aroy Dee (real name Steve Brunsmann) and Marc Antonio Spaventi can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. While Brunsmann is of course better known for analogue-rich deep techno, his outings with Spaventi usually explore the pair's mutual love of throbbing, synthesiser-powered Italo-disco. That's certainly the case with 'Sorrow', a mascara-clad slab of raw, arpeggio-driven new wave/Italo-disco fusion that comes topped off by a particularly stylish, half-sung, half-spoken lead vocal. Heavier and more breathless dancefloor thrills are supplied by the accompanying 'Space Dub', where the track's pulsating groove is ratcheted up to 11 and periodically submerged in sparkling deep space synths.

Movimento (Conscio mix)
Movimento (Inconscio mix)
Review: Battista, John Swing and EMG's first hook-up under the SPS moniker - the thrillingly hard-to-pigeonhole Sintomi Di Gravita 12" - was arguably one of 2014's most slept-on records. Here they join forces for round two, delivering another two tracks that neatly sidestep the accepted norms of house and techno. A-side "Movimento (Consico Mix)" is a wonky chunk of well-swung, jazz-flecked deep house, smothered in filters and tipsy chords. Flip for the Inconsico Mix of the same track, a brilliantly far-out fusion of odd electronics, glitchy rhythms, shimmering synths and bubbling found sounds. It's hardly dancefloor-centric, but it's certainly really, really good.

Ron Boots - "Lachrymation" (12:05)
Jo Bogaert - "Ambient Kinsky" (3:59)
Morten Sondergaard - "Sahara I Mine Maender" (4:22)
Ron Boots - "Far Boundaries" (9:22)
Review: Stroom's latest must-check release is a mini-compilation featuring suitably obscure electronic tracks originally released between 1993 and '96. Check first Ron Boots' picturesque "Lachrymation", where chiming melodies, lilting lead lines and spacey chords rise above similarly spaced-out beats, before turning your attention to the meditative, early morning swell of Jo Bogaert's immersive - and aptly titled - "Ambient Kinsky". Turn to the flip for the hazy, tabla-driven dreaminess of Morten Sondergaard's bleeping "Sahara I Mine Maender", as well as Ron Boots epic "Far Boundaries". The latter is an incredible slice of slow-burn ambient bliss that sounds like it was recorded in one of Europe's grandest old cathedrals.

Cold - "Strobe Light Network" (14:52)
James Bernard - "Lapis Lazuli" (6:35)
Review: More split action from STROOM, a label that has delivered some killer reissues of late. Heading up this double-feature is Icelandic producer Isar Logi Arnarsson AKA Cold, who offers us another chance to savour his 1995 Berlin Love Parade anthem "Strobe Light Network" - a 15-minute deep techno epic that boasts a lengthy ambient introduction, hushed and hypnotic grooves, undulating electronic motifs, ghostly chords and glacial, rush-inducing lead lines. Over on the flip, James Bernard takes over. "Lapis Lazuli" first surfaced on his 1997 album "Symphony For A Biomechanical Breakdown" and 22 years on it has lost none of its ghostly, otherworldly charms. A chunk of ultra-deep ambient rich in creepy melodies and psychedelic acid lines, it makes a near perfect B-side to Arnarsson's peerless classic.

CPI - "Mount Anal" (8:14)
Juan Ramos - "Skincrawler" (6:05)
Kris Baha - "Paralleled" (6:53)
Bezier - "Starpoint" (7:56)
Review: Notorious Discodromo helmed session CockTail D'Amore celebrate their 10th birthday with a compilation that highlights many different aspects of the much loved and musically adventurous Berlin party. The Cosmic Hole is the corner of the club that champions slower, freakier sounds, and the corresponding 12" kicks off in style with the throbbing acid chug of "Mount Anal" by CPI. Juan Ramos brings something of a nightmarish industrial clamour to "Skincrawler", while Kris Baha gets bombastic on the full-fat "Paralleled". Bezier completes the package with "Starpoint", a mystical affair shaped out by yearning strings and subtle rhythms.

Orgonite (6:00)
Orgonite (Riding The Waves) (6:21)
Review: Berlin's Cocktail d'Amore and Tokyo's Ene Records have come together once again to present the music of Solidair. The duo of Cocktail alumni Luigi Di Venere and Jules Etienne present three tracks aimed to induce a dance floor hypnosis. Orgonite (Riding the Waves) does just that, a slow build awash in the ebb and flow of acid tinges, just enough to wet your whistle on a Saturday night. The original mix keeps the skeletal support but throws in a life preserver of 8 bit gaming synthesis. Frisky arps call and respond to each other before making way for sinewy pads to lift off. Tiger's Eye sets itself onto cruising speed incorporating elements of late 90's acid techno with the sleek and smooth clubbing aesthetics of modern day Berlin.

22-105 (5:02)
Review: Burnt Friedman and Joao Pais Filipe's collaborative efforts began back in 2018. The former using synthesis and electronics to paint subtly but incredibly specific aural pictures, the latter focusing on the drum and rhythmic end of things. At times their music feels entirely designed for the dancefloors of underground electronic clubs, in other moments it's something very different indeed.

This latest EP lives up to those broad brushstrokes. '21-30' is a lush, almost tropical sounding workout that offers a complex percussive pattern, and combines these with gentle shades of melody, harmony, hook and distorted note. '22-105' brings elements of glitchiness and robotics into the mix. Meanwhile, '18-140' would work well as a brooding building tool (or section) of a 'proper techno' mix, with '23-130' bridging gaps between the lot.

Marine (Woo version) (4:35)

Review: Alexis Georgopoulos and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's Fragments Of A Season was one of the highlights of Emotional Response's output in 2017, centred around blissful, Balearic instrumentation that shone a spotlight on the considerable talents of these accomplished artists. Now the label is revisiting the material with a couple of finely selected versions, the first coming from Emotional regulars Woo, who dutifully inject "Marine" with their effervescent, otherworldly expressions and create a glistening masterpiece in the process. Felicia Atkinson then tackles "AA Cleo" and sends it out onto the horizon in a haze of reverb romanticism, muffled percussive rumbles and murmuring vocals.

'To Chce Mit Svuj System' is a classic of the genre originally released in 1984, but here professionally remastered with some new reinterpretations and edits. Eva Hurychova & Jan Neckar from former Czechoslovakia wrote the original 7" and Optimo's JD Twitch offers a superb extended edit here that takes you on an ever longer trip. Felix Kubin - "Japan Japan" (J Rocc edit)
Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

Animal Transformation (6:20)
Review: Existing at the interzone between Zurich, Berlin and Mexico City, Lustpoderosa serve up their fifth release here courtesy of trio Jack Pattern. Taking its cues from the early sounds of coldwave and industrial, the trio deliver a po-faced slo-mo groove on "Nella Notte", then give us the neon-lit and fishnet clad "Animal Transformation" calling to mind the early sounds of Severed Heads. There are some great remixes too, but our favourite was certainly by Sneaker (Ratlife / Uncanny Valley / Frigio) who delivered a trippy and hypnotic rendition of "Animal Transformation" that gets on a percolator style jack in the vein of Green Velvet and keeps those Jim Morrison like vocals to charming effect.

GI Jane (Fill Me Up) (Jackson Auro remix)
Review: Returning in August with his first album in over eight years, Jackson seriously impressed with the psychedelic cocktail of influences that went into making Glow, an album that captured the enthusiasm French dance music had in the last decade. This EP sees standout album track "GI Jane", with its gleeful singalong chorus and unashamedly rhythmic stomp that sounds like classic Soulwax paired up with the delightfully skewed French touch house of "Vista". Hudson Mohawke is a fantastic choice to remix "Vista", enhancing it with a cathedral-like scale, while Jackson himself provides his own, more straight-faced remix of "GI Jane", turning it into the kind of moody electro rave banger not heard since the days of Trash.

Review: When it comes to heavy chug, Multi Culti has always known exactly where to strike to make the most memorable or - more accurately - inescapable impact. Thomas Jackson's 'Slow Train' is just the latest case in point, then, drawing dancers and listeners alike in with its warm-hued, hypnotic synth lines, stabs and warbles in all the right places to ensure that while not that much happens, you'll be stomping about like everything was going on at once. Far from a one-track-wonder, Calypso Cult II is the label setting out all its stalls with aplomb. 'Jungle Tungle' is a strange, somewhat shrill, constantly building and percussively dominated workout that's tough and yet not actually that tough. 'Big Plastic Room' is peak time acid meets Kraut oddness, while 'Hipocampos' brings things to a beautiful close with beguiling, downtempo sludge.

Review: Sydney's electro-psychedelic-indie outfit, Jagwar Ma, drop two new mixes of their 2013 hit "The Throw" on the Multi Cut label. There's three parts in all, where the first one, Dreems Sounds Of The Universe Part 1, is made up of a delicious blend between acoustic instruments, delicate electronics and wailing vocals; the piano keys riding across those desolate soundscapes with utter class. Parts 2 and 3 enter party mode, with subtle bursts of 303 acid mixing nicely within the original track's poppy nature.

Review: Sound Metaphors sub label Thank You continues to explore lesser known niche records from visionary artists of the 80s by revisiting this single from Jah Wobble. 'Blow Out' is a shoe-in for any Balearic set worth its salt, pairing boxy drum machine rhythms with wistful keys and some blue-eyed soul vocal turns for a meandering ride through prime mid-decade sonic territory. Bleepy where it counts, just a little dubby around the edges and smooth up top, it's a refined, long form cut which sounds great with a modern remaster. Backed with the instrumental version on the flip, it's a no-brainer for diggers who might have balked at paying top whack for an original 85 edition.

Review: Astonishingly it's been four years since we last heared from Jamie XX, who midway through the last decade seemed an unstoppable musical force of nature. This comeback 12" - a single-sided, white label affair - is therefore hotly anticipated. Happily, we can confirm that it's rather good, with the experienced producer building a fiendishly percussive groove out of layered hip-house style breaks and tribal drum hits before introducing a gargantuan bassline, speeding things up to a "Shangan" style tempo and letting loose. Throw in some bold synth lines, a few electronic bleeps and some cut-up, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and you have a future dancefloor anthem on your hands. As comebacks go, "Idontknow" is pretty special.

La Visite (Low Jack remix) (4:12)
Midnight Man (Gilb'R Midnight version) (6:09)
Review: The peerless Versatile label revisit Etienne Jaumet's 2014 opus La Visite for this 12" of the same name which finds Low Jack, Dusseldorf crew Die Wilde Jagd and label founder Gilb'R all reworking tracks. First up is Die Wilde Jagd, a new production endeavour from Dusseldorf fixtures Sebastian Lee Philipp and Ralf Beck who call on the kraut spirits of the German city for a fine reimaginations of Jaumet's title track which sounds like Neu drenched in all manner of loving delay. Low Jack attacks the same track and his remix could not be more different, a thrilling soupy ride through the dub wasteland - such a talent this guy! Gilb'R ends the 12" on a more relaxing note with a wondrous ambient rendition of "Midnight Man".

Jungle Shuffle (JGD rework) (6:26)
Jungle Shuffle (JGD Beatless version) (8:35)
Review: This is a white hot new white label from Jay Glass Dubs who serves up two textbook re-workings of the 'Jungle Shuffle' tune that prepared on Italian saxophonist Laura Agnusdei's debut album Laurisilva. First comes his JGD rework which is all about the mystic flute leads that drift in and out of ear shot. Rumbling bass and broken drums are way down below to power it along, and then on the flip he offers a beatless version that has you suspended next to the slightest wisps of flute and dark drones.

Cloud Worship (5:13)
Pick A Toy (6:29)
Puzzle (5:27)
Friday Night (5:00)
Review: Under the Jaz alter-ego, John Zahl has been serving up laidback, Balaearic-minded edits of musical obscurities since the mid 2000s. Initially, that was for Claremont 56 offshoot Sixty Five, but in the last decade he's also appeared on Passport To Paradise, Rotating Souls and, most recently, Pinchy & Friends. Here he returns to the latter label with four more rubs of atmospheric cuts from the dusty corners of his record collection. He begins with the wonderfully throbbing, solo-heavy dancefloor synth-scape of 'Cloud Worship', before successfully tinkering with a tactile, semi-organic proto-house gem on 'Pick a Toy'. Over on side B, 'Puzzle' is a tidy revision of a cosmic-minded, French language Balearic synth-pop gem, while 'Friday Night' is an eccentric, off-kilter slab of new wave disco oddness.

Jaz - "Cleopatra" (6:46)
Frantz - "Hyde & Go Sleaze" (5:44)
DJ Rocca & N2B - "Abuse" (5:57)
Facets - "Never Passing" (5:23)
Review: Death On Wax has already slipped out a handful of sharply informed edit and remix 12"s which fly the flag for the early 80s dance culture, when seedy, nocturnal bands were colliding with the flamboyant grooves of disco and synth pop. On this latest record, Jaz goes low and slow on the new wave goth tones of 'Cleopatra' before Frantz leans in on the Eurodisco freakiness of 'Hyde & Go Sleaze'. DJ Rocca & N2B pile on the pressure with the camp delights of 'Abuse' and Facets completes the set with the boxy beats of 'Never Passing'. Essential cuts for any discerning death disco.
