Review: Watergate, the cult Berlin club known for its riverside location and legendary LED ceiling above the dancefloor, is also a reputable tech house label that deals in fresh names only. Here it is 8Kays that makes a debut with Falling Down, a selection of superb collaborations including 'Matematica' with Glowal which is tense and electric tech with indie vocals and with Juan Hansen he cooks up the medically hopeful 'Falling Down' which then gets two remixes. Colyn & Beswerda make it into a moody and deep groove, Chris Avantgarde brings some peak time prog energy and solo cut 'Lyra' has a warm, paddy broken beat to cruise on through the stars.

Review: Brooklyn's Wonderwheel imprint has been going strong since the mid noughties, and the label has always offered the best freshest that the world dance scene has to offer. Gliding between broken beat, nu jazz and house, their identity has never truly been reliant on one genre or form, and we like them all the more for it. This week sees the tenth installment of the Turntables On The Hudson series, another chapter in a fine collection of multi-faceted music for the lovers of something a little funky and different. Main man Bonobo comes through with "Flashlight" on the A-side, a tropical house tune with a gentle touch, while jazz funk legend Gregory Porter is remixed and housed-out by Claptone, the man's soulful vocals riding beautifully amid those kick drums and piano lines. On the B-side, "Tshunga" by Aero Manyelo is an Afro dance tune with a heavy dance backbone, while Pablo Sanchez turns "Brother Dragonfly" by Sorceress into a lo-fi house tune with a tight little percussion knot. Gorgeous!

Review: Welcome to the world Echoes of Glory, a brand new label that makes its first foray here, and what an inaugural EP it is too. It comes in the form of a split between Carlo Gambino and Dahbar who take one track each, with two mighty remixers all on duty. 'Kyo' is a rubbery deep hue cut with some well-placed samples that bring the soul. Dahbar then offers up 'Depilada' which is a more pumping tech cut. Radioactive Man then steps up with a fine remix that heads into deep and moody electro territory. Last of all, fellow electro don Carl Finlow adds his spin to 'Depilada' which is all silky lines and shimmering pads.

Review: There's an embarrassment of contemporary house riches to be enjoyed on the second edition of Music Is Love's Lovebox series, with a sizable contingency from the UK stable of deep house troopers. There's soothing funky tones from Mr KS, nifty broken beat delights from Cassio Kohl and Tuccillo, and rough-shod party-starters from U Know The Drill and Jackson Ryland. The diversity across the four sides is pleasing to see, and there's no shortage of fresh ideas from the likes of Liam Geddes with his distinct shuffle on "Untitled" to Oli Furness' off-centre approach to rave tropes in house music.

Review: Colin Curtis Presents 'The Head Hunter' EP by GeeW, aka. Glenn Worthington, a relative new kid on the block, yet whose releases since 2021 have dealt in expert specialist wares of danceable acid jazz and nu-jazz. Such factors continue on this latest output, with the cloud nines and fluting solos of 'Head Hunter' and 'Speedball' whisking the listener away unto a quick flight, with spirited zoomings-past of electric bass and French horn, which dance astride the craft's flanks, as we shoot ever further into the abyss of jazzspace. Then B-siders 'Brazsecco Interlude' and 'How Long Has This Been Going On?' mark a migration from the cockpit through to the onboard lounge, in which Prosecco is poured and mounted speakers vibrate, curtailing anxieties with sweetly arranged vocals and carefully stacked percussion.

Review: It's 20 years up for London's Phonica Records, a fine place to go for a dig but also a rather good label for those who like fresh electronic sounds. They are marking the occasion with a series of samplers of what they do and this is the seance in the series. It's a global affair with artists from all over contributing, starting with man of the moment Gene on Earth and his chord-laced house bopper 'Club Jacket.' Huerta then comes through with 'Hit The Bit' which is an amped-up tech house party starter and Subb-an & Luther Vine combine for the deep and slinky sounds of 'Sunday Roll Through.' Keisuke ends things with the funky loops of 'Ride It Out.'

Review: ** BIG REPRESS ** After two auspicious releases on the Swedish label Aniara Recordings, production duo Genius Of Time step up to Clone's Royal Oak series, previously graced by the likes of Space Dimension Controller, Reggie Dokes and Gerd. Taking this esteemed company into account, we don't take it lightly when we say this record is as good as anything we've heard in the Royal Oak series, with A Side offering "Drifting Back" a jazzy house delight with softly pumping chords making for a jam that wouldn't seem out of place in the KDJ back cat. It's the two flipside offerings, however, that contain the real heat. "Houston We Have A Problem" combines calming synths, vocal moans and rolling percussion to breathtaking effect, while "Juxtapose" could almost be David Kennedy in house mode such is the tough, raw drum programming, but Genius Of Time add some softly soaring strings, thus imbuing the track with a nice classicist bent. An excellent release that comes with a free download code to keep all you mp3 bandits happy.

Review: As the title would suggest, this double pack monster from Roger Gerressen and Ivano Tetelepta is forged from digging through dusty records to create a spotters delight of beat constructions to make DJ Shadow blush. While the pair's grounding in house and techno shines through, not to mention Nilla's role as an All Inn offshoot, the real informer here is hip hop, as titles such as "Kool As Keith" attest. Throughout there's a tone of smoky, late-night ambience which lends itself perfectly to this kind of project, but it still kicks when it wants to. The title track surges forth on a limber break while "Mambo Town" shimmies with resurrected energy. There are plenty of mellow moments to be enjoyed as well, so if you like your beats outsourced then get on this sizable package.

Review: Magic Ritmo is back with another brilliantly cultured release, this time a reissue of a 1990 gem that has long been shorted in mystery. You honestly would be hard pushed to know this was from all the way back then and now right now such is the richness of the sound design and the freshness of the rhythms. G.F.X. is an alias of Geoff Waterston, a producer and engineer from Whitley Bay on the North East English coast who spent his youth messing with electronics. Here he mixes up techno, dub, IDM and plenty more into a cosmic exploration with alien vocals and brilliantly synth craft. This is a cult record amongst those who know and rightly so.

Review: Re:st continues to be an incredible source of adventurous thinking beyond the structures of drum & bass, and this latest record from Ghost Warrior would be hard pressed to claim an obvious link to the genre. It's more of an experimental jazz offering, using hollowed out notes and whispers of instrumentation, and yet somewhere in the sampling-as-artform process it captures some of the mind-bending magic of Source Direct, Photek et al. Delicate and moody as hell, this is another realm of music opening up and it's one we hope we get to explore deeper on further releases.

Review: Say yes! The definitive gossamer Italo floor fuel of Ida No and Johnny Jewel's Glass Candy outfit enjoys an expanded reissue here on sexy lavender vinyl after over a decade out of print. Nothing but synthetic positivity as both the title track and "Drumm" stride with an almost marching feel before "Where Time Sits Still" plunges much deeper into moody new romantic cinematics. Elsewhere other highlights include the slinky poignancy that lingers from every spacious bass pluck on "City Lights" and the trembling ambience and pressurised atmosphere of the finale "Sanctuary". Review: Experienced American producer (and sometime Drrtyhaze member) Doug Gomez has been leaning into his Latin heritage in recent times. On Origenes, he continues on this theme by combining his love and knowledge of soul-flecked NYC deep house, with authentic South American percussion. He begins with 'Quiero Amor', a leisurely, sun-splashed slab of warming deep house rich in bright melodies, female vocals (in Spanish, of course), Nuyorican Soul-esque beats, warming bass and effortlessly colourful chords. There's a more traditional Latin jazz-goes-house flavour to 'Baile Espiritual' - think sustained pianos, percussion-laden house beats and undulating bass - while standout 'Celestial Dance' is an infectious, percussion-laden drum jam with a killer synth bassline that's guaranteed to delight jazz-dancers, Batacuda freaks and all those who like to let loose on the dancefloor.

Review: A double dose of Filburt and the GoodGuy goodness this week as the Leipzig duo complement their excellent Jacob Korn collaboration on Permanent Vacation with this dinkified ten inch debut for the Riotvan imprint. If you've dipped into the Mikesh & Filburt contributions to Mirau, Permanent Vacation or Liebe Detail Spezial you'll be well aware of what to expect from "No Other"; those coming to this release with inquisitive ears will be rewarded by one of the more shamelessly uplifting tracks to emerge over the summer months. A vocal turn brimming with soul sits atop what can only be described as a chord driven old school piano house banger which really deserves widespread appreciation. Permanent Vacation's in-house duo of Benji and Tom take it deeper on the flip with a little help from The Drifter - last seen on an Erdbeerschnitzel cut.

Review: Neighboursoul Rhythm is a new label out of Germany that kicks off with some gold standard edits from Felipe Gordon. Fela Kuti's 'Opposite People' is first up and the afro legend's vocals ride proudly above a melee of horns, drums and keys that overflow with vitality. Tony Allen - who famously played drums with Kuti - is then the subject of the second cut, 'Oladipo', which is just as full flavour and alive, with big wind stabs and jumbled beats and perc. Last of all, Livy Ekemezie's 'Holiday Action' gets edited and renamed 'Livinus'. The funky bass riffs are the standout aspect of this one, which is rump-wiggling afro disco of the highest order.

Review: Last year was a busy one for Felipe Gordon, who dropped soul-slicked house bombs on the likes of Shall Not Fade, Groovin, Razor N Tape, Fluid Funk and more. His vibe remains indebted to the roots of jazz and funk as he slips out his first of 2022 on Noire & Blanche, the stunning Superimposition EP. The vibes are flexible on this record, with 'Feeling All Over It' slipping into some exquisite downtempo and the title track offering up impeccable late night deepness for the heads on the floor. With local legend Camilo Gil and Mexico City-based Mario Flores at the helm, the imprint aims to showcase Chilean talent - though this compilation style debut EP features cuts from artists based all over the world. Nima Gorji sets the tone with 'Get Me Out Of Here', a hypnotic and mind-altering fusion of minimal house sparsity and deliciously psychedelic electronics, before Quenum delivers a typically Chilean blend of oddball house drums, weird noises and Villalobos style effects.
