Review: Chilly Gonzales' Gonzo offers an autobiographical dive into his rich, storied and accomplished career. While previous works showcased his musical depth, Gonzo explores some intriguing spoken-word sections and lyrics which are self-aggrandising and self-indulgent but always with a knowing irony. The opening track features Gonzales referring to himself as "Chilly G" in a way that is playful and songs like 'Surfing the Crowd' blend awkward nerd rap and poetry, while his witty lyrics add weight to the strong instrumental foundation. Packed with bright moments, Gonzales is in fine form here with a new type of work that is as interesting as his many other albums.

Review: Dexter Gordon's 1965 album Gettin' Around captures the essence of his refined, effortless saxophone playing, coming at a time when he was back in the States after a long stint in Europe. The vibe here is smooth and unhurried, with Gordon's tenor sax at the centre of it all, surrounded by a standout crew: vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins. This unique instrumentation really shines, especially with the interplay between Gordon and Hutcherson on tracks like 'Manha De Carnival' and 'Shiny Stockings.' The whole session feels relaxed yet precise, with Gordon letting his sax sing while the band provides subtle yet nuanced backing. Highlights include the gentle swing of 'Everybody's Somebody's Fool' and the more upbeat 'Le Coiffeur,' both showcasing the group's tight but easy-going chemistry. Reissued as part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, this edition stays true to its analogue roots, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes and pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl. For fans of Gordon or classic Blue Note, it's a must-have.

Review: Super cool jazz cat Dexter Gordon's 1963 album Our Man in Paris marked his first release from Europe and is often regarded as the final bebop album. The saxophonist gathered a quartet featuring bebop legends Bud Powell on piano and Kenny Clarke on drums and they played alongside French bassist Pierre Michelot to record this timeless work at CBS Studios in Paris. The album is defined by Gordon's commanding saxophone with the intricate rhythms of bebop that take you right back to a precise moment of musical history which marked a significant transition in jazz. It remained a defining work in Gordon's career.

Review: By 1962, when Dexter Gordon recorded Go!, he was already a jazz legend and a proven pioneer in bringing bebop to the tenor saxophone in the 1940s. His career had been slowed by personal struggles but signing with Blue Note in 1961 marked a powerful resurgence and led to a series of iconic albums. Go! features a stellar quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums and highlights Gordon's boundless creativity on tracks like the tasty 'Cheese Cake' and his skilful interpretations of ballads such as 'I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry' and 'Where Are You.' This reissue comes on nice blue and heavy-weight vinyl.

Review: With his new album, the lauded Bogota producer Felipe Gordon assembles a collection of tender, ponderous hip-hop instrumentals inspired by 'the melancholy of a period of his life and the emotions that come with it.' While this cryptic insight could relate to a gamut of emotions from heartache to loneliness, the album's 11 tracks, including collaborations with lo-fi beats kingpins Saib and Made In M, among others, channel a timeless nostalgia which is immediately relatable. Fusing the instantly recognisable jazz lollop of many of today's 'beats to study and chill to' school with Tame Impala-esque jangle guitars and reverb clouds, Gordon delivers an anthology which truly does what it says on the tin. Turn Off, Tune In, Drop Out!

Review: There is no stopping the prodigious producer Felipe Gordon who turns out huge amounts of work, without ever sacrificing artistry. He brings soul and jazz to his deep house sounds and this is the fourth time he has landed on Clone. 'Profundo' gets things underway with singing synths and shuffling deep beats, then 'Hold On' centres escapist and sunny melodies that take you to the Med. Elsewhere 'I Don't Know Why' brings spoken word vocals to lavish house and 'Takes Time' oozes sex appeal with its steamy sax notes and gentle piano tinkles. All of these cuts are laden with great musicality that puts many producers to shame.

Not just a clever name, At Issue takes its title from the Brooklyn venue this incredible album was recorded in, namely Issue Project Room. For those who don't recognise the musicians involved, Kim Gordon is an icon of discordant, white noise-y rock 'n' roll, best known as a member of Sonic Youth - one of the most iconic guitar acts to emerge in the 1980s.

That might be a red herring in this context, though, because at the New York address in question Gordon was joined by legendary blues minimalist maestro, Loren Connors. The result is a hybrid work that's patient, sophisticated, utterly mesmerising and - for want of a better, less fawning word - close to perfection. Profoundly moving, and masterfully arranged, we guarantee this is one for the lifetime honours list.

Review: Dreams can come true. When the late, great Robert Gordon was nine years old, the punk rocker turned Rockabilly-revivalist heard Elvis on the radio and he set his sights on becoming a rock & roll musician. The American went on to have a glittering career that included a stint in New York punk scene favourites Tuff Darts and having Link Wray on his records. But it was in 1978, upon signing to Elvis' label RCA, that he said it was "a dream come true." This is the first album Gordon did with RCA and his first with the go-to session guitarist of the time, Chris Spedding. It's a powerhouse of a record expertly weaving through rockabilly, 50s pop and country. Gordon's soulful vocals sparkle with nostalgic and lustful tones that are able to light up any room where it's heard. A true master of his art.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but there's a genuine buzz about Peggy Gou's long-anticipated debut album, I Hear You. It delivers an accessible, entertaining and well-executed journey in which Gou's rarely discussed pop instincts are balanced out by music that nods to current club trends and nostalgia for the 1990s and earlier acid house era. So while opener 'Your Art' is weird, trippy, psychedelic and chugging and '1=1=11' is a Balearic neo-trance workout of the sort Salt Tank used to knock out in their sleep, 'Back To One' sounds like a lost '90s NYC dance-pop anthem, '(It Goes Like) Nananana' is an insanely infectious and piano-heavy slab of rave nostalgia, and 'I Believe In Love Again' (with Lenny Kravitz) sounds like a long-lost, hip-hop tempo Red Zone remix by David Morales.

Tuning The Wind (part I) (19:01)
Tuning The Wind (part II) (16:48)
Review: Grand River's (Aimee Portioli's) fifth studio album (her first after the brilliant In uno spazio immenso, her debut for Caterina Barbieri's label Light-years label) began as an installation in 2022. Having since evolved into multi-channel, 4DSOUND, and stereo formats, the record has bridged every hurdle to live performances it could possibly face. The 36-minute composition is divided into two parts: Portioli recorded various winds and transformed them via layering and pitch adjustments, fashioning the wind itself into an instrument. Going so far as to align the gusts to a 440hz reference and tuning particular instruments to windward passages, Portioli went with the wind, yet still wound up more alive than ever. Wind and synthesizers merge seamlessly, erasing the line between natural and human-made sound; silent until it meets an object, air currents produce an array of tones, from whispers, to roars, to melodies.

Review: Ambient masters Grand River and Abul Mogard team up for the first time ever on In uno spazio immenso (In A Huge Space), titularly touching on the often gargantuan feeling evoked by space ambient, a befitting name to say the least. Here the pair work in and through the genre to produce a full-circle rainbow's worth of expanse and breadth, successfully contrasting a sense of largesse with another, counterintuitive feeling of a world stood still, time having stopped. The six-track album is an impressive, but subtle grand tour of an unblemished, alpine sublime, with the opening intenso-ambience of 'Dissolvi' recalling the work of Ben Frost, and the near-closing 'Sulle barcane' serving as the album's unique denouement, made up of cryptic environmental recordings, static washes and weightless pads.

Although slightly delayed, this is a special tenth-anniversary edition that reminds of its charming mix of pop, r&b and EDM influences. The album is mostly defined by Grande's powerful vocal range and emotional depth while belting out hits like 'Problem,' 'Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart' and 'Break Your Heart Right Back' all of which remain bangers to this day. Plenty of top-tier guests also feature like The Weeknd, ASAP Ferg and Childish Gambino. As a celebration of her breakthrough era, My Everything remains a modern pop milestone.

Review: A year on from initial release, eternal sunshine remains a powerful and introspective exploration of heartbreak, growth and the aftermath of personal upheaval. As Arianna Grande navigates her Saturn return here, she transforms her very public divorce into an emotional, musically rich concept album. Inspired by the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, she confronts the lingering pain of a breakup with a mix of raw vulnerability and clever humour across tunes that blend her signature r&b sound with new, bold experimentation, including Y2K-inspired tracks like 'the boy is mine.' While her lyrics occasionally lean on familiar phrases, Grande's restraint and vocal artistry shine through and prove the fine singer-songwriter is not done evolving yet.

Review: Lying is rather like borrowing money from an alternate reality. The liars don't exist in it and yet they bank on its invented energy. American singer-songwriter and former Czars frontman John Grant knows this all too well, not least the degree to which the lie is indelibly riven across every facet of modern society; his latest album takes its title after the concept and, though its message is a bitter pill, it's also packed with humour and bombast, stylistically straddling everything from electro-pop to alt-indie in a whirlwind of named (and in the lattermost case, featured) influences from the Art Of Noise to Laurie Anderson to Vangelis to (the album's producer) Ivor Guest. A politically sprawling project spanning many contemporary gripes, The Art Of The Lie is an extreme effort at sublimating the frustration of the now.

Review: The Grateful Dead's Reckoning, originally released in 1981, stands out among their many live albums for its completely acoustic set. This album captures the band's exploration of their roots in folk, country-western, and traditional music. Highlights include Garcia's heartfelt rendition of 'Been All Around This World' and the charming 'Monkey and The Engineer,' a nod to their jug band days. Tracks like 'Jack-A-Roe' showcase Garcia's emotive storytelling and guitar skills, while 'Dire Wolf' and 'Cassidy' bring an upbeat vibe and folk rush to the collection. The album closes beautifully with ''Ripple,' featuring Garcia's heart-felt vocals and flawless harmonies. Now reissued by Rhino Records, Reckoning offers a pristine version for both new listeners and longtime fans to enjoy.

Review: Go To Heaven is a solid record musically, showing the band's musical evolution. The biggest change is the arrival of keyboardist Brent Mydland, who replaced the late Keith Godchaux and introduced a wide array of piano, organ, synth, and vocals, adding a fresh composition style. Produced by Gary Lyons, Go To Heaven merges elements from the band's previous styles, including jazz, prog-rock, and disco, while incorporating modern funk and synth motifs. Drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann provide consistent but reserved rhythms that anchor the album's diverse sounds. The album opens with 'Alabama Getaway,' a short blues rock jam, followed by Mydland's catchy rocker 'Far From Me.' Garcia's 'Althea' stands out with its bluesy slide guitar and buzzing bass by Phil Lesh. Bob Weir's co-written tracks with John Perry Barlow, such as 'Feel Like a Stranger,' bring funk/rock vibes with Mydland's wild analog synth. 'Lost Sailor' and 'Saint of Circumstance' add jazzy elements and upbeat pop, respectively. Mydland's 'Easy to Love You' offers smooth vocals reminiscent of Michael McDonald and the traditional 'Don't Ease Me In' closes the album with a bluesy, country-infused jam.

Their second live album was originally released in 1971 and showcases them - in quintessential quintet form - blending rock 'n' roll energy, Bakersfield twang and psychedelic exploration. The album features a diverse setlist with a healthy hit of covers, from the hard-hitting version Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B Goode' and the Stones' 'Not Fade Away' to the heartfelt balladry of 'Me & Bobby McGee' and the cosmic depths of 'The Other One'.

Review: If you're over the age of 30 it's probably quite alarming to think David Gray's monumental smash hit single 'Babylon' is now almost a quarter century old. A track that appeared everywhere, from TV ads to films to the radio for the next 25 years or so, it's the sort of song that artists can find it incredibly hard to come back from. Career defining, but also limiting, its enormous success melding with the very identity of the person who made it. Dear Life, Gray's 13th studio album and his first since 2021's Skellig, proves how unfair that familiar pattern can be. Deft songwriting and first class musicianship abound, although the record is unlikely to win any new disciples - this is very much Gray doing Gray the right way, a soft rock-pop-jazz-tronica workout that's easy to get along with, and get a little lost in - it's going to be just what the therapist ordered for those already converted.

This double-gatefold beauty on Optimism is a timeless listen that takes in myriad house styles. There are sample heavy mid-tempo rollers like 'Fly Away' as well as blissed out vocal cuts for loved up floors like 'You Got To Remember', sophisticated disco-tinged cuts like 'Where Do We Go From Here' and feel good summer anthems such as 'Don't Want Anybody'. Review: Since releasing her much admired debut album 19 Masters in 2022 - an impossible to pigeonhole affair that saw the Canadian-Japanese bassist-turned-solo artist explore her abstract and experimental influences - Saya Gray has kept fans content via a series of low-key (but undeniably interesting) EPs. Here she finally delivers full-length number two, the simply titled Saya, whose genesis can be traced back to a solo trip across Japan accompanied by her acoustic guitar. Musically, it is rooted in folk - bluesy finger-picking motifs, strummed chords and her sweet vocals are an almost ever-present - but it's like no folk album you'll have heard before, with Gray throwing in everything from Tricky style moody trip-hop beats, haunting pedal steel, dark electronics and nods to country, Americana, r&b and atmospheric electronica.

Review: Following on from the global success of 1997's Nimrod, pop-punk heroes Green Day would find themselves at a creative impasse, with an earnest desire to eschew much of their pre-established formula and tap into outsider influences. These compositional experiments led to 2000's Warning; an LP considered somewhat of a commercial flop upon release, further strained by a tepid fan response and the full project leaking to Napster three weeks before official date. Time finally catching up to all things as it does, the decades of dust gathering since has led to the album being reappraised throughout the years as one of the finest examples of Billie Joe Armstrong's penmanship; drawing on inspiration from peers in the alternative rock scene such as Nirvana and R.E.M. while citing Bob Dylan's 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home as a vital guide to retooling the Green Day formula to fit a more slacker rock/acoustic folk-punk style. Four years later would see the dawn of American Idiot and Green Day being passed, as it were, from Generation X to the millennials, for an entirely new era and fanbase, marking Warning as the band's last 90s-imbued work and final chapter for many a longtime listener.

Review: Say what you will about Green Day's career resurgence record but 2004's American Idiot slaps far more than any hater will have you remember. While many still bemoan the band's shying away from the slacker college rock of 2000's Warning, it's impossible to deny the massive staying power that came from the ludicrous hit singles of the title-track as well as 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', 'Holiday' and even the nine minute opus 'Jesus Of Suburbia'. Leaning further into concept and theatricality than ever before while essentially serving as the torch bearer album that saw Green Day be passed from Generation X to the millennials of the 21st century, it's easy to understand why American Idiot has become a victim of its own success in the two decades since release, but that doesn't excuse the selective amnesia for how potent of a record it truly was upon arrival and just how prevalent Green Day became in the cultural rock music zeitgeist for an entirely new generation of anxious kids. This 20th anniversary expanded edition arrives in a 4xCD box set complete with a bonus 2xBlu-ray.

Blue Note's Tone Poets series is all about celebrating some of the greatest jazz guitarists, reissuing their seminal albums as a nod to virtuoso talent. Grant Green's 1963 album Feelin' The Spirit consisted of jazz arrangements of traditional African American spirituals such as 'Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen' and 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child'. Given the historical weight of the music, it's no surprise to hear Green soaring high as he expresses the songs through his guitar, but as if that wasn't enough he's backed up by Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums.

Review: As far as reflective storytelling goes, Philmore Greene's new album is as good as it gets, and one that shows off his vibrant hip-hop mastery. The Chicago lyricist weaves deeply personal narratives throughout these joints and layers them with sharp social commentary, as all good hip-hop mic men should. His tunes offer a raw yet polished perspective on life's trials and triumphs backed by rich, soulful production. Greene's intricate wordplay and commanding delivery shine from introspective moments to bold declarations. Importantly, the album balances emotional depth with head-nodding groove and in all, it solidifies Philmore Greene as a compelling voice in hip-hop who is both authentic and artistic in all new ways.

Review: After three groundbreaking albums with black midi, including 2023's Hellfire, Geordie Greep has carved out time to release his debut solo project, The New Sound. This album showcases an eclectic and vibrant approach to alternative pop, granting Greep the freedom to pursue creative impulses without restraint. He reflects on this liberation, stating that without a band to answer to, he could fully explore his artistic vision. The recording process involved over thirty session musicians across Sao Paulo and London, blending diverse influences. Greep notes the spontaneity of working with local talent in Brazil, where tracks were recorded in a matter of days. Musically, The New Sound delves into themes of urban life and human experiences, juxtaposing light-hearted melodies with darker narratives. Songs like 'Holy Holy' merge indie pop with lush Latin arrangements, while 'Motorbike' features bassist Seth 'Shank' Evans in a poignant lament. Greep's ambition is evident throughout the eleven tracks, aiming to engage listeners with intricate lyrics and unexpected turns. He hints at future live performances, aiming to capture the album's dynamic spirit in various settings.

Review: Following on from their self-released 2022 debut EP Spiritual Disease, UK based blackened metallic hardcore newcomers Grief Ritual make good on all of their initial malevolent promise with the debut full-length Collapse. Combining the low-end, chug-heavy beatdown style of Knocked Loose with more heinous elements of extreme metal, they conjure an oppressive atmosphere that looms over every breakdown, crunching riff or guttural, tortured bellow. Exploring themes of human extinction, capitalism, genocide, ecocide, as well as the rise of populist right authoritarianism, this is as punk as it gets in ethos and message yet conveyed with more viciousness and caustic horror than any death metal act of the modern era.

Review: Michael Grigoni and Pan•American's latest collaboration is a series of contemplative reflections on the isolation, fractures and uncertainties that define today's world. The album delves into the emotional landscape shaped by political divisions, personal solitude, and the lingering aftereffects of the pandemic. Through its fusion of folk, country, bluegrass, and blues elements, paired with a modern, ambient atmosphere, the sound is both rooted in tradition and forward-looking. Tracks like 'Sun Morning Sun' and 'Silver Streams' carry a sense of quiet introspection, while 'Black River Song' and 'Mirage/Afternoon' showcase the duo's ability to merge organic instrumentation with spacious, textured soundscapes. The album's exploration of personal and collective experience creates a reflective space, asking listeners to pause and engage with the complexities of modern life. A musical journey that speaks to the heart of the American experience, offering an emotional response to an uncertain future.

Review: Evgeny’s work on this release marks an exploration into the intersection of minimalist composition and cinematic storytelling, blending the intimacy of personal experiences with sweeping sonic landscapes. Living amidst nature, his creative process draws deeply from his surroundings, with each track inspired by a narrative of quiet, evolving moments. Adding trumpet to his usual mix of orchestral and electronic textures, Evgeny continues to refine his sound, maintaining the evocative qualities that first gained him attention. His subtle use of brass on pieces like ‘Hunter in Love’ adds emotional depth, while shorter tracks like ‘Prologue’ and ‘Epilogue’ exhibit his ability to encapsulate entire stories in brief yet powerful bursts of melody. With these compositions, Evgeny invites listeners into a world where stillness and fleeting beauty reign, offering a glimpse into the delicate balance between nature and music.

Review: Orange Marmalade was originally released in October 2021 after being recorded by Evgeny Grinko at the Funkhaus in Berlin. The title holds a double meaning as it nods to Alice in Wonderland, a book Ginko was reading during its creation, as well as to his nostalgic childhood memories of life back home where metal jars were filled with marmalade. Musically this one picks up off where The Naive Album left off in that it showcases a composer in utter command of his voice and own unique style. It captures a range of emotions from sorrow to joy, triumph to introspective solitude, all with sweeping orchestral moments adding to the scale and drama.

Review: It doesn't take long to pick up on Harold GroBkopf's progressive and krautrock roots. Born in Hildesheim as his homeland began picking up the charred postwar ruins, his oeuvre to date includes a stint in a 1960s beat group, The Stuntmen, and then a spell playing with then-unknown heavy rockers, Scorpions, before joining Wallenstein and Ashra as drummer, and getting in on several of Klaus Schulze's solo efforts. Strom betrays much of that heritage, straddling the fine line between electronica and rock, setting out its stall in a hinterland sound that's really neither nor. At times it glitters, in other moments it grinds, sometimes its beguiling, then it's more charming, in a strange, well-left-of-the-middle kind of way. An enigmatic collection of work from a true musical enigma.

Review: Muriel Grossmann's latest offering is a radiant journey into spiritual jazz, rich with groove and emotional resonance. From the first notes of 'Pointing Out, Part I', the interplay of Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3 and Moog sets a reflective tone, easing the listener into an intimate exploration. Grossmann's tenor saxophone gracefully emerges, weaving meditative phrases supported by gentle drums and guitar, inviting quiet introspection. As the record progresses, the quartet locks into mesmerising grooves. The second track propels forward with a fiery sax solo, intricate guitar work and effervescent organ passages, held together by tightly snapping drum rhythms. The finale of Side I bursts with psychedelic energy, blending soprano sax with a vibrant, r&b-infused rhythmia dazzling reminder that spiritual jazz can exude joyful movement. Side-2 opens with an ethereal mix of Hammond tones, sparse percussion and harp flourishes, building into sultry sax lines and bluesy guitar solos, creating a lush and meditative soundscape. Flute and alto sax take center stage on the next track, a vibrant celebration of connection and joy. The closer slows the pace, a contemplative tenor solo layered over a steady rhythm, drawing the album to a reflective, uplifting conclusion. Grossmann's work pulses with warmth, community and profound beauty.

Review: Benjamin Grosvenor's latest release, the second installment in his Decca contract, showcases his exceptional talent in works for piano and orchestra. Teaming up with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under James Judd's baton, Grosvenor delivers captivating interpretations of Saint-Saens' Second Piano Concerto, Ravel's G Major Concerto, and Gershwin's iconic Rhapsody in Blue. While the combined choice of repertoire might seem unconventional, Grosvenor's artistry shines through, effortlessly transitioning between the diverse styles of each composer. His refined yet impassioned playing captivates listeners, whether navigating the lyrical passages of Ravel's concerto or infusing Gershwin's jazz-infused melodies with infectious vitality. The accompanying solo 'encores' further showcase Grosvenor's virtuosity, with standout performances of Saint-Saens' 'The Swan,' Ravel's Prelude in A Minor', and Gershwin's 'Love Walked In.' Each piece is delivered with exquisite precision and sensitivity, demonstrating Grosvenor's mastery across a range of repertoire.

Review: The Groundhogs' second album, Blues Obituary, released in 1969, marks a significant evolution in their sound, showing the band's ambition to transcend traditional blues. Tony McPhee and his band delve into a fusion of electric British blues and progressive psychedelic rock, resulting in a wonderful sonic journey. The opening track, 'B.D.D.', demonstrates their shift away from conventional blues structures with its refined guitar work and smoother melodies. Tracks like 'Daze of the Weak' highlight McPhee's extraordinary guitar work, propelling the music beyond mere blues variations. The album also features a diverse range of influences, from swamp rock in 'Mistreated' to the haunting 'Natchez Burning', reminiscent of classic southern rock bands. The experimental closing track, 'Light Was the Day' evokes their innovative spirit with freeform guitar and improvisational drumming. Blues Obituary is an essential listen that signals the Groundhogs' potential for greatness, as they chart their course into new musical territories. Highly recommended for those seeking a blend of blues and psychedelia.
