Notes: The extended play recording. Not quite an album. More than a single. And not only an artefact of the vinyl era, the EP has survived and even thrived at every turn of the music industry's evolution, from vinyl to tape to CD to stream. This definitive book unearths the EP's origins, history and cultural impact and enlists nearly 50 music-industry veterans (musicians, scribes, producers, executives, superfans) to create a list of the 200 best EPs ever recorded and shapes these opinions into a book that seeks to trace the arc of the EP's development and, in so doing, chart the history of the music industry writ large.

From Dangerhouse to Touch & Go to Sub Pop to Flying Nun, and all roads in between, savvy labels have used the EP to great effect and its been the way to introduce bands in a less risky mid-sized format for decades. This super-interesting guide shows how the format developed and how it took on a life of its own, from early jazz & rock'n roll through the beat & psychedelic rock era, right on through punk, new wave, and post-punk, and into the alternative/indie rock era, right up to the modern age. This rousing guide through the mid-sized mindset features a huge swath of guest writers galore, each offering up their enthusiastic opinions on which EPs deserve your attention, divided by decade, along with all of their details on long-forgotten B-sides and extras that couldn't fit on the 7" version, yet easily pad out a 12".

Notes: The next instalment in the Disco Pogo Tribute series is the legendary electronic artist Aphex Twin. This follows the hugely successful Disco Pogo Tribute to Daft Punk. Like Daft Punk, the people behind Disco Pogo have had a long-standing relationship with Richard D. James for over 30 years via their 90s magazine Jockey Slut. The book is edited by Disco Pogo editor Jim Butler and features interviews, essays and features from the best music journalists working today - including contributions from Juno Daily's own Ben Willmott and Matt Anniss. It features an iconic cover portrait of Aphex by seminal photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, plus a huge amount of great photography of Richard since the very beginning from some of the best music photographers in the world. The also features extensive contributions from the designer of Aphex's logo Paul Nicholson - also his onstage dance for his early years - who has opened up his archives to us and also the assistance and support from the label homes of Aphex - Warp, R&S and Rephlex. Aphex fan website Lanner Chronicle is also involved in the book, which is hardback, 250 plus pages and beautifully designed and printed (of course).

Included are full color reproductions of numerous original records, test pressing and acetates from Afrika Bambaataa's collection. Notes: De School is thrilled to announce the release of Het Altjid: a 160-page journey back to and through its now-defunct club, art spaces, cafe, and restaurant, which closed their doors on January 15. Het Altijd archives De School's essential facets, functions, spaces, and stories, from the pre-DS days to the moment the music stopped. In sync with De School's eight-year- spanning program, the publication is a sensory and experience-based format that crisscrosses disciplines and allows those who enter to define their own route. The release of Het Altijd follows the launch of Het Archief, the extensive sound archives unlocked earlier this year.

More than a final form of documentation, Het Altijd was created to be an experience in itself, expanding on the time-erasing sense of exploration that a deep dive into De School embodied. Preserved records such as architectural sketches and art documentation are interwoven with original imagery by various creative contributors, including semi-anonymous portraits of club regulars, and post-closing snapshots taken just minutes after the very last dance. Recurring throughout the publication, and featured on the cover, is the abstracted thermal imagery of artist Loes de Boer, who chronicled the 66-hour closing (Het Einde) while upholding De School's distinct sense of anonymity and wonder. In Het Altijd, the no-photo policy is simultaneously upheld and liftedileaving space to roam and relive De School one last time.

Het Altijd refrains from a singular storyline and exclusively features text found in, on, and around Doctor Jan van Breemenstraat 1. Left-behind wall markings, toilet scribbles and sticky notes from the basement were photographed and excerpted to form fragmentary, touching, and tongue-in-cheek poetry that revive individual and collective memories. In addition, the non-linear graphic design andilack ofibinding allows anyone to (re)arrange their very own De School encounters. Holding Het Altijd together is a translucent red cover featuring the instantly recognisable grid: a final nod to De School, the warm hue of its seemingly endless hallways, and its enduring, all-encompassing foundation.

Notes: How You Make Me Feel: The Life & Legacy of Marcus Intalex is a tribute to the late, great producer/DJ and a genre-transcending story of passion, creativity and timeless underground music. It has unprecedented insider access to his life and legacy with interviews with Goldie, Calibre, DJ Flight, Doc Scott, Mark XTC and many more. It’s also visually captivating, packed with over 100 rare photos, artwork, and memorabilia.

Notes: Chronicling the first 10 years of Sloow Tapes, Mellow My Mind gives an overview of all the tapes, broadsides, lp's and booklets published so far. From Keijo's desolate avant/acid folk moves to Fursaxa's spiked organ drones with a short detour by way of Ira Cohen's Akashic Records. Fully annotated with detailed information about the tapes, promo texts, reviews and a few texts written especially for this publication by Bart De Paepe, Matthew Parry and Louise Landes Levi.

Notes: In addition to the musical objects she creates, Sarah Davachi is also immersed in the theoretical issues that surround her practice. Papers positions historical and technological conclusions to face their philosophical underpinnings.

Two of the essays dissect sympathetic compositions: Natura Morta by Walter Marchetti and In A Large, Open Space by James Tenney.

The book concludes with six artifact studies: an Italian virginal, a Bosendorfer piano, the Novachord, the Mellotron, the modern harp, and the OSCar synthesizer. Comprehensive details of their development, mechanisms, and cultural significance.

Notes: Projectile is an artist's book by John Sparagana, Reto Geiser and David Grubbs. The book spirals outward from a single source image: a news photograph of chair-throwing at the conclusion of a cancelled rock concert in the early 1980s. Visual artist John Sparagana has long produced sliced and mixed collage works in which a source image is enlarged, copies of the image sliced vertically into 1/8" strips and then sequenced horizontally, followed by a second stage in which the stretched image is sliced horizontally and sequenced vertically. The resulting works stutter, shimmer, extrapolate, and radiate with all manner of dazzling visual effects. Projectile deepens this engagement, with Geiser drawing from multiple works by Sparagana and a work of short fiction by Grubbsia single 2,100-word sentence that wends its way through the entirety of the book.

collecting and research into the illegal business of bootlegging has now been documented, and Discopatrick’s

Notes: Presented for the public's perusal, a coffee table collection of film photos from 2009-2013 by Oh Sees frontman, Castle Face co-conspirator, and all around restless artistic presence John Dwyer. Dwyer seemed to always be pulling out a camera around then and these flicks function as a technicolour joyride through his universe in San Francisco and beyond, with his jackal's smirk from behind the lens all but palpable in these pages. Tour snaps, blackmail fodder, candid camaraderie, and the ringing echo of maniacal laughter await one within. Originally printed in a limited quantity by San Francisco clothing shop and live music incubator Vacation, Castle Face has dusted it off for a wider release for those that never got the chance.

Notes: Weeds Change The Colour Of Water is a speculative effort, one dreamt to collect ideas, interpretations, and interactions. By listening patiently, we may come to recognise some pattern in the tangle that surrounds and involves us - a spot to sense that, like a weed, we are insecurely tethered amid choppy and changing waters, which now, more than usual, have us flailing and adrift.
