Fragment 36

Part O
Review: "You never cross the same river twice! Panta Rhei!" Behind this project with the strange name (German for "eel-catch with horse-head") is one Mirko Uhlig from Germany, who had few CDR-releases so far, most of them standing out through their weird surrealistic coloration. In the meantime he's also built his own label Ex Ovo. "Fragment 36" relates to a quote from Heraclites showing that "everything deliquesces" at any moment and can never be the same as one moment before. According to that, Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf's first and last ever 7" creates two drone-minimal pieces with very high dynamics, using watersounds and Glockenspiel, drenched into overtune-feedback-resonances & dark deep drones.

Re-Spoken (Nubian Mindz Demo mix)
Review: Rush Hour's Direct Current hits its fifth release with the high standard very much maintained here. On this we get some classic Aardvarck given a future flex by DC mainstay Cosmin TRG and Nubian Mindz. "Nosestep" was firmly adopted by forward thinking DJs in the nascent dubstep scene when it was released as part of the Well Well Well EP in 07. Driven by a rugged bass line that accrues weight as the track progresses, it still sounds great today. In the hands of Cosmin TRG, the track gets transformed into a cavernous acid stepper that burrows deep into your senses, especially in the second half of the track. The B Side is handed over to Nubian Mindz, with a previously unreleased Demo mix of "Re-Spoken" from 2001 seemingly perfect amidst the current future house movement. Typical class from the Rush Hour stable.

OK O
Review: Dutch veteran Aardvarck returns to the Rush Hour Distro affiliated No Label series with more rave-inspired breakbeat techno in the shape of 1990. With a production history going back as far as 1993, and a DJ career that began several years before that, Mike Kivits is better placed than many to take this approach and this two track 12" is every bit on par with the excellent Nubian 12", his debut for No Label last year. The title track combines soaring strings and rolling drums together in a nostalgic package, while "Ok.O" presents the more experimental side to the Aardvarck sound, delivering something akin to an unholy union between junglist rhythms and a dying modular synth. Absolutely essential!

Review: After releasing three 'Cult Copy' releases of dancefloor pleasure, this three track album sampler shows a more diverse side of the 'Cult Copy' project. These four 12" together make most of the album, as there won't be a LP version available. Side B gives us a more laidback, listening feel. Though the A Side is a techno/house crossover hit, which should please all the DJs and dancefloors, like the first three 'Cult Copy' 12"s did!

Walls (5:36)
Transphat (5:07)
Review:  Given its title, you might expect Aaron K's second vinyl outing to be filled with forthright, sub-heavy sleaze. While there's some weighty low-end pressure to be found - especially on the sparse, dubbed-out delights that are 'Superbass 1' and 'Superbass 2' - for the most part the EP delivers blends of atmospheric, analogue deep house and jacking acid house that prioritise mood and melody over significant bass-weight. It's a fusion that works really well throughout, with highlights including the subtle electro influences and deep, spaced-out riffs of 'Transphat', the picturesque, arpeggio-driven melodies of 'Folding Arps', the jaunty deep acid of 'Everyone in the Pool (Filtered Mix)', and the cosmic late night hypnotism of 'Walls'.

Review: Josh Aaron brings some freshness to deep house with a new EP for Trax Research that comes on coloured vinyl, though what colour you will only know when you open it. Opener 'Check It Out' brings breezy vocals to zippy beats and slinky basslines. 'Let Me Out' then takes things down a level for a jazzy deep house number with cosmic synth smears. 'Bronze' gets funky with tight drum programming and the sort of vibrant synth wrk that makes for a kaleidoscopic listen. Last of all 'Get On' is a slinky and high-speed house number awash with colour and a warming soul.

Review: After a successful first round that featured the likes of Kassem Mosse alongside Juniper and some lesser known friends of the label, Manchester promoters-turned-imprint Meandyou are back with another various artists release that plumbs further depths around the fringe pools of house and techno. Aatropa & Tephillin deliver the most upfront cut in "Bells Jam", which still lurks in oddball synth flourishes around a chunky thud of kick drum, before Fabric drifts out into ambient bliss. Herron meanwhile plies a long lead-in before blossoming into a dexterous and delicate broken techno formation of the highest order, and then Metropolis cools things back down with a winsome groan of a beatless excursion.

Review: A 10" featuring the finest that highlife has to offer, Crentsil was a figurehead of Ghanian music during the 70s and 80s who was introduced to highlife music at the turn of the 90s - a combination of pop, jazz, disco, and funk. 'Obi Baa Wiase' and 'Sika Be Ba' are two tracks with a close-knit message of gratitude, hope and faith between them, with the former being the staple track of Crentsil's long career after being played at weddings, festivals, and live concerts by local bands. A pair of incredible tracks produced by Charles Amoah utilising limited equipment to create an authentic party atmosphere, jovial flutes and plucky strings are the accompaniment to A.B. Entsils's proclamation of joy - put this on at the party and the room are sure to start moving.

Review: While many electronic artists operating in the underground would kick their catalogues off with some EPs here and there, Andy Brown, codename AB2088, preferred to drop two debut LPs before landing on Central Processing Unit with this mighty 10". Right from the start of "All The Eyes", you can hear that this dude likes to create music rather than effective tracks, with all sorts of deep and complex musical harmonies encircling the air above the tune's more straight-laced beat groove. Even on the flipside, namely through the excellent "TX0", you can hear a story being pieced together, a tense and energetic bundle of sounds yearning to explode out of the system. Deep, deep electro thrills for the lovers...

'Atlanta Deep' follows next with a gloriously gloopy bassline a little reminiscent of Mayday's 'Nude Photo', and then 'Mortise & Tenon' closes the 12" with the lightest and most soulful of touches in both the rhythm and melody departments. Review: Deep house originator Abacus is back in the game having revived his Re:Think label "with a new vision & energy." The first EP, Analogue Stories Vol 1, is a bold one that opens with a monologue from a classic New York movie about street gang warriors. It sets a moody tone which then leads into warm deep house grooves. 'Spaceflight' rides on loose, jumbled drums, toms and basslines that are topped with sustained cosmic chords and 'In4mation' then brings heady and wispy melodies that encourage you to dream as the soul-drenched grooves roll on. 'Blaktronics' shuts down with a more prickly percussive edge. It's a welcome return for this master of the form.

Review: Well over two years has passed since the release of Keeping The Legacy, a compilation style EP featuring tracks inspired by "the classic sounds from Chicago, New York and Detroit". This belated follow-up begins with something rather special: a fine Jorge Caiado 'Morning Dub' of lesser known Abacus and Chez Damier hook-up "Closer". While it boasts their usual chunky, groovy bottom-end, the mix also makes great use of a yearning, cyclical electronic melody. Elsewhere, James Duncan delivers the hazy deep house bump of "416 Zone (Dub Mix)", Jacksonville laces dreamy, drifting chords over a killer bassline and heavy percussion on "Twilight Industries", and Satore reaches for the cowbells and Gwen Guthrie vocal samples on the disco-influenced throb of "Keep On".

Last Session - "Sometimes I Feel Like"
Ron Trent - "Morning Fever"
Ani - "Love Is The Message"
Review: US label Prescription Classics serve up the fourth part in the From The Vaults series. Taking timeless beauties from the archives, Ron Trent's label is now re-issuing these deep dance gems. Part 4 kicks off with Abacus's "My Brazilian Love". Raw chords, delicate swinging hi-hats and perfectly executed percussive sections give it pure soul and groove. Last Session's "Sometimes I Feel" is fuelled by a strong kick that's kept in check by a bassline to die for and sultry vocal snippets. Label boss Ron Trent is up on the flip with "Morning Fever"; its epic guitar riff and chord patterns get as deep and funky as they come, garnished with tinny percussion and low slung momentum. Lastly, "Love Is The Message" from Ani is the "For Those Who Didn't Hear It The First Time" version from 1994. Riding off its tribal percussion and sharp drum taps, the sexy vocals ooze with allure over the constantly driving groove. Essential.

The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. Review: Fast making a name for himself after a brace of EP's for Border Community and Output (RIP), Luke Abbott continues to dazzle with these four new gems of futuristic, motorik tech-house on the Allez Allez imprint Amazing Sounds. The title track is simply stunning - a two-chord wonder of spacey and gliding synths anchored by minimal kicks and claps. 'One Hundred & Thirteen' is just as heart-tuggingly beautiful, while 'Present' ups the tempo to around 150bpm and rides a brilliant glitchy-melody. The moody drones of 'Schmitt Swell' rounds things off nicely and makes for a vital and highly impressive EP from Abbott.

Review: Luke Abbott drops his second EP for Notwon with the Object Is a Navigator EP. The title tracks implements Abbots trademark trance-like style with complicated drum patterns and gut-wrenching synthesis techniques. The low noise floor of modular mechanics at work is just audible in "New Buildings" as is the analogue overdrive fuzz that cloaks the track. Minimal bleeps, watery sprinkles and synthetic drums similar to Pantha Du Prince make up "A Short Distance" while "Silent Fall" is a operatic demonstration of Abbot's producer know-how. The muffled drums of "Overgrown" verge on being techno, but not enough to detract from the Border Community stalwart's experimental charm.

Predictably, it's rather good, and full to bursting with sneaky reworks of obscure gems. Title track "African Sheikh" - a kind of wonky Italo-disco/proto Afro-house hybrid - is particularly potent, though the quirky electrofunk/synth-pop shuffle of "Impossible" is almost as good. On the flip you'll find the dreamy, Balearic disco slinkiness of "Confusion", and the even more horizontal vibes of "Dazzled", where glistening guitars and hazy vocals intertwine with delay-laden beats and sustained synthesizer notes. As re-edit EPs go, it's one of the more special ones.

The former kicks off by, says the label, "taking an Ocean classic for a trip to Miami." His take on 'Lost' is a funk-laced jam that blends r&b vocals with bubbling beats and jazzy keys into something brilliantly seductive. The Names You Can Trust imprint comes through with a glorious one-tracker by Carbono himself, alongside his 'Grupo' and, unsurprisingly, the masterful modern production of Quantic. "La Pina Madura" is a beast of a track, all built with percussive glory and the fiery South American zest that is made all the more effective by Quantic's post-production work. Slightly off-kilter and irregular in its shapes, this is undoubtedly a 7" single that you will want to bust out this summer. Blazing hot!

Review: After the success of Gel Abril's 'Very Wrong', Be As One is now on its fifth release which is set to bring things forward once again, this time
with an ep from the imprint owner Shlomi Aber. Still high on the worldwide charts with his latest hit on Ovum, 'Freakside', Aber is back with
what he proudly calls 'my best work to date', which he saved especially for his own Be As One as the official 'Freakside' follow-up.

Review: 'Tokyo Shanghai' is the next Ovum release from Shlomi Aber. It is the follow up to his massive 'Freakside' release last
year on Ovum. An acid groover set to be huge. Sure you've heard of Shlomi Aber - his releases continue to creep into
year end charts and compilations and he's deservedly generated massive support from the main players.

Another Dimension (6:17)
Fxxk The Policy (5:13)
Getroit (5:20)
Review: Proper dystopic warehouse techno from Be AS One's head honcho Shlomi Aber. 'Another Dimension' conveys the inner workings of a true alternate timeline in which there is no air, no planets, no Earth - all there is is heavy industry, a nightmare universe of winding pipes, metal, girders, pistons and conveyor belts. 'Fxxk The Policy' is a rebellious anti-state anthem that politically mobilises listeners as much as it entrances, while 'Getroit' reclaims a possessiveness over motor city with subdued 909s and a gritty-dubby lead crossrhythm.

Review: Ovum cull four tracks from Shlomi Aber's new album Chicago Days, Detroit Nights for this heavyweight double pack vinyl release. Taking its cue from the album title all four tracks come steeped in the vintage sonics of the two cities with the unrelenting throb of "Basic Roots" a nice contrast to melodic techno bliss of "Taped & Gorgeous". On the second slab, Aber displays his talent for drum programming on the raw energy of "Tap Order" whilst "Black Funk Hi" delights in the filtered usage of a heavily compressed vocal sample.

Freakside (Gel Abril Acid rework)
Review: With "Freakside" Shlomi Aber delivers his debut release on Ovum. Shlomi is one of the hottest producers of the moment and he has delivered a 12" that is totally Ovum. The original mix is an absolute roller. Shlomi knows how to deliver the groove. He manipulates the percussion to create a very cool rhythm that builds to a prime time climax that drops back into that infectious groove. On the b-side Gel Abril brings in the 303 to give the track a twisted approach. The acid mix is an absolute stormer ready to devastate any main room set!

Glooming
Review: Not one to rest on his laurels, Israeli producer Shlomi Aber swiftly follows his album for Ovum with two heavy hitting big house bumps on Objektivity. "The Majestic" bosses the A Side with a stripped back jacking groove laying down the gauntlet before Aber implements the titular looped vocal that echoes and pulses with hypnotic intent, seemingly forming new phrases as the track progresses propelled along by a menacing line in bass movements. "Glooming" proves to be just as immediately gratifying, as heavy rhythmic chord stabs vie for your attention with the clipped jacking beats, whilst a warm bassline sits so deep in the mix it feels like it's emanating from your gut.

Review: Yes, we were just thinking exactly the same thing: Shlomi Aber on Nonplus? But yes, it's actually for real. The Israeli tech house master known for such clever titles as Chicago days, Detroit Nights and the producer for Gel Abril among others, is trying something different and indeed using Boddika's label as a platform. "Takeover" is dark, peak time tech house, somewhat different from what you'd expect from him but similar all the same. It's "Street Works" where the real surprise is at; a cyclical and stomping peak technocut that sounds like something on Klockworks. Interesting developments yet in this famed producer's career.

Something New
Review: Shlomi Aber has over the years managed to create himself an honourable place and became one of the leading DJs and producers in the Israeli night life scene. He also runs his own show on the famous Israeli radio station -"South Radio". Shlomi Aber's sets are full with warm and unique sounds that makes you feel like you are going back to the better days of house music, you can just feel the magic in the air. Shlomi's musical inspirations can't be defined by one genre, taken from jazz to funk, disco, deep-house, electro, progressive, acid and techno but the main fact remains that he manages to create his own musical niche that makes him stand out from a lot of DJs out there. "Absolutely love Something New !!! Really fucking good shit!" - Jody Wisternoff, "Both sides are cool - Good buzz about it in 3 Beat - and doing well for me - very tasty" - Steve Parry (Juice FM/3Beat), "More peak-time chunky house from alternative route" - Jerry Bouthier, "Massive release from Shlomi - it's really cool. Both tracks do what they have to do in fine style" - Lewis Dene, "A big summertime piano track that works on many different levels. I'll be hammering this one for some time to come and played on the radio show. Thanks AR" - Paul Hamill (ATL Dance BBC Radio Ulster), "Really feeling the Inspiration track .Funky as hell with another killer piano hook from Alternative Route. In the box, in the chart." - Noir, "Two great tracks here and another impressive release from Alternative Route with a good use of the piano on Inspiration and a more chilled vibe on Something New" - Jamie Jay (Quantize Radio).

Review: House music heritage meets contemporary techno mechanics; old meets new; east meets west... all of these can be used to preface this collaborative effort between the colossal Chicago presence of DJ Sneak and Israeli newcomer Shlomi Aber. Thankfully the most crucial aspect - the quality of the tracks - stands up to inspection. They each grab a side to present their own take on "After Touch" with Aber's version positioned to constantly build, dipping between the bucking rhythms and undulating synth lines with consummate effect. Naturally Sneak leads from a percussive angle, building around one of his trademark beat patterns, filling the gaps with intricate vocal effects for an epic tech house funker.

Review: This is the first single taken from their second long player "Do Whatever Turns you on". Aberfeldy front man Riley Briggs explains, "It was a pretty basic kind of pop song," admits Riley "I like nice, easy-to-trip-off-the-tongue lyrics, and lots of alliteration. The song was written in the context of ID cards and CCTV everywhere. You're being watched and monitored all the time and being encouraged to switch off at the same time".

Review: UK artist David Duncan recorded only one EP as Ability II but it is one of those which has become an utter cult classic and much sought-after 12". The story goes that the bassline on this one was so deep the mastering engineer had a problem cutting it. There is no evidence of it on this reissue though - that bassline powers the tune perfectly as the plunging kick drums and dancing synths get you moving your body. Perfectly deployed vocals bring heart-aching soul as this most warm and dubby cut drowns you in timeless deep techno. Next to the gorgeous original mix is an extended dub for even more drawn-out late-night dance floor pleasures.
