Notes: The kalimba is an instrument in the percussion family. It is a modernized version of the African mbira. It is a sound box with metal keys attached to the top to give the different notes. It is also known as the African thumb piano. Several reeds or tines are plucked with the thumb or fingers, and the reed vibrations are amplified by a hollow box resonator or a sounding board. The kalimba is a member of the Lamellophone family of musical instruments. The first kalimba to be exported commercially out of Africa was the Hugh Tracey Kalimba. The name kalimba is a Bantu word which means "little music", and is similar to the word karimba, a type of mbira. While kalimba initially meant the Hugh Tracey kalimba, the name kalimba is now a generic name and can describe any non-traditional thumb piano, or can even be used generically for the traditional lamellophones of Africa (ie, the mbira, karimba, sansa, etc). As used by Maurice White of 'Earth, Wind & Fire'.

Review: The song "Lautlos" has a very special flair. DelaDap have written and recorded it in cooperation with the Berlin cult band 17 Hippies. Singer Kiki Sauer's very own style of mixing French, English and German text fragments mixed with the sound of DelaDap did create a strong feeling of multi-culture somewhere between chanson, Balkan sound and jazz. The 17 Hippies, who got known to a broader public especially with their soundtrack for Andreas Dresen's Movie "Halbe Treppe", was founded in 1995. Actually they wouldn't call it "founded", it was more an open come-together of several musicians from totally different backgrounds just to do some acoustic music for their own pleasure. The French press came up with the wording "Berlin Style" which is know synonymous for the 17 Hippie's mixture of eastern European melodies and rhythms with French chanson and American folk. Beside the original album version in radio length and a new DelaDap own remix, the new DelaDap maxi-CD also contains a remix from Vienna's rising Balkan expert [Dunkelbunt] and one from house specialist Jeremiah! As a special bonus it also comes with the highly demanded long-version of Noha's "Goldregen" mix.

Review: Beautiful vocal house cut here from Redsoul on Deep Swing's Generate Music imprint. The original mix is a perfect balance of pumping big room house beats and sweet and smooth vocals and funky rhodes. The Soularis mix takes a more west London broken beat perspective with jazzy syncopated drums, moody synth keys and bouncing Moog Bassline. On the flip, DJ Meme goes to town with a thumping soul piano house mix aimed at the main house.

Review: The EP is based around the lead track, "People" - a hypnotic, slow-lumbering roller that builds purposefully around a haze of shimmering guitar and piano, a see-sawing (almost Fall-like) bass riff, scuttling percussion, and dubby explosions. With little in the way of vocal lines, Avey Tare's voice is instead utilised in a series of simplistic chanted affirmations, yelps and screams. "People" is followed up by "Tikwid" - a quirky, upbeat live favourite that motors on rollercoaster piano, cartoonish sampled squelches, bustling drum stabs and a runaway vocal chorus. It's another killer track that sounds like nothing else and fits snugly alongside the likes of "Grass" or "The Purple Bottle". The brief spectre of "My Favorite Colors" conjures a haze of processed, haunted ballroom vocal warbles and slurred laughter, whilst the EP ends on a live recording of "People" - recorded in Boston on the band's US tour in march 2005, just prior to the recording of "Feels". Taking inspiration from a wide range of sources without ever being reducible to a list of influences, Animal Collective are making challenging modern pop - music that defies easy classification or lazy pigeonholing. The mixture of electronics and traditional instrumentation, of song form and soundscape are integrated brilliantly and totally convincingly into a coherent, logical whole. Bubbling, rippling instrumental playing coheres into fluid song structures that seem to swell and ebb, building a throbbing, shimmering wall of sound.

Review: Bringing back the Tim Deluxe classic in all it's Latin house glory, newly formed Italian group APDW (made up of producer's Matteo Esse and Sant) hit hard with their version of "Just Won't Do". Keeping the brilliantly nagging trumpet line from the original, APDW flesh it out over their radio and vocal edits into a beast of a track that's both huge but also keeps the subtle and sultry flavour of the original. Mowgli adds an extra trumpet specially recorded for the mix, while ATFC and Warren Clarke team up to bring a Baltimore meets soca swing to the drums. Paul Jackson goes the other way and gives the tune a fully tech'd out beat and a gloriously long build-up.
