I'm Not In Love
Good News
Review: A landmark of 70s pop returns in a striking new edition, celebrating five decades of influence. This limited red vinyl 7" is a fresh chance to experience a song that redefined the ballad, blending lush vocal layering with a dreamlike, melancholic atmosphere. Originally released in 1975, 'I'm Not In Love' became a defining moment for 10cc, securing their place in music history and launching them onto the global stage. Topping charts across multiple countries, the song's innovative productionibuilt around multitracked vocal harmoniesiset a new standard for studio experimentation and its hypnotic, ethereal sound continues to impact, making it one of the most enduring soft-rock classics of all time. Over the years, the song's haunting beauty has found a home in film and television, weaving its way into everything from 'The Virgin Suicides' to 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. This special edition presents the full-length version as originally intended, backed with the original B-side, 'Good News'. Arriving on Valentine's Day in deep red vinyl, it's a perfect collector's piece and a reminder of how music can capture longing, memory and heartache in a way that never fades.

Review: The 45 King was given unprecedented access to the rescued master tapes in the archives of the recently relaunched Westbound Records label in order to create the beats for this bumper album. The music of Junie Morrison and Ohio Players features heavily of course as The King pays tribute to the original iconic breakbeats that helped make him such a don in the hip-hop world. This box has seven singles in all, with 13 of these new tunes all appearing across seven differently coloured slices of wax.

Review: DIIV formed back in 2011 and made big impressions within the blog world and then the real world after debut single 'Sometime' picked up plenty of attention. It was follow up with two further singles as well as a cover of a Kurt Cobain tune 'Bambi Slaughter' and to mark the 10 year anniversary all of their debut album all of these 7"s re pulled together on vinyl and serve as a great reminder of where the band has come from. They scream DIY and are very indicated of the Brooklyn scene out of which they were born with songs that muse on love in all its many different ways.

Review: 7" BOXSET EDITION! Having fulfilled his reggae ambitions, Snoop returns to the source with this incredible homage to the original funk that hip-hop spawned from. Referencing Bootsy Collins with his new moniker, he's teamed up with one of Stones Throw's most consummate funk purveyors Dam Funk. We don't need to tell you the result; authentic, sexy and smooth, it's a time machine that whisks us back to the late 70s and early 90s. From the dreamy textures and overdubbed harmonies of "1Question?", the shiny proto-R&B mothership moment "Do My Thang", everything about this screams class. Timeless funk made by two masters, we guarantee this will sound just as hot in 10 or 20 years.

Review: There's no band more timeless than Blondie, nor any band more likely to nonsense the idea that pop music is the preserve of the young - Debbie Harry is 71 years old, yet 'Pollinator' is as fleet of foot as anything the band have made, not to mention their finest album since their late-'90s comeback with 'No Exit'. Recruiting the production skills of John Congleton, not to mention a galaxy of stars in the writing department (Charlie XCX, Sia, Johnny Marr, Dev Hynes, Nick Valensi) may have helped them on their way, but 'Pollinator' would be nothing without our Deb's imperious charisma, nor a pop suss that has lost none of its sharpness with the passing of the ages.

Review: Al Cisneros is perhaps best known for his part in legendary bands like stoner kings Sleep and doom monoliths OM, but he's also been exploring realms of dub for the past 10 years via his Sinai label and crucial drops on ZamZam Sounds and Drag City. He's now gathered together that decade of work in this immense box set, which gives you heavy, brooding masterpieces like 'Dismas' and 'Teresa Of Avila' all gathered together in one definitive drop of leftfield dub excellence. For fans of Muslimgauze and Scorn as much as King Tubby, this is a vital testament to the experimental potency locked within the tradition of Jamaican version excursions.

Review: The Long Shadow Falls collects the 41 unknown and redreamt mixes that Current 93 created for two (long-ago sold-out) lathe-cut 12" releases, respectively titled 'The Long Shadow Falls' and 'Why Can't We All Just Walk Away?'. Whereas the original lathe pressings are lost to time, this reissue thankfully revives this curiously lengthy record. The former suite is riven across a whopping 39 twelve-or-so-minute ambient/post-rock cuts, while 'Why Can't We All Just Walk Away' comes as a single fourteen minute opus, and is backed by a short untitled tune. Yes, this is the same song repeated 41 times over, with subtle differences in the mix between them. Evincing the musical cunning of a Himalayan cat, these are just the sorts of antics we've come to expect from Tibet and co.

Cheeky, goblin-like rhymes come courtesy of lead vocalist B-Real and hypeman Sen Dog, doing justice to the two-tone rapper-hypeman formula of the day, trailblazed by Public Enemy. An important slice of history homing in on one of the few hip hop acts to straddle the rivalry between East and West Coast rap at the time.

Review: As hip-hop reaches the grand age of 50, who better than DJ Premier to herald the half-century with an ambitious project which not only looks back, but points ahead to the future. Preemo has constantly pushed the game further, setting level upon level of expression and innovation in his beats and frankly leaving the competition eating dust. Over the past year he’s been rolling out collaborations with the likes of Joey Bada$$, Nas, Run The Jewels, Lil Wayne and Slick Rick, and now those have been gathered together in this cool-as-hell five disc 7” box set. Each vocal track comes with its attendant instrumental on the flip, meaning you can savour Preemo’s beats in full if that’s what you’d prefer.

Review: Fresh from 2011, Mad Professor's deep delve into the work of young Bogota cumbia quartet enjoys a timely reissue as a boxed set of 45s. Full set of originals, full set of versions; all parties delivering something special; Frente Cumbiero's funk is raffish, loose and prone to left switches while the Professor adds a few extra textural layers and trip-outs giving tracks like "Bestiales 77" an almost technoid momentum and cuts like "Cumbietiope" sound like percussion heaven. An exemplary dub schooling from the teacher once again.

Review: Talk about prototypes. Futurisk are about as relevant to the development from punk to post to synth to New Wave as anything else you're likely to come across (this week at least). And yet after delivering a pair of sell out albums and generating quite the buzz around their live shows, just as soon as they came they vanished into the scuzzy ether circa 1984.

Gone but not forgotten thanks to astute heads at the Minimal Wave label, who clearly know a good thing when they see it, this collection showcases the strange mix of art, brute force, dancefloor, bar fight and hallucinogenic experience these Florida obscurities were all about. Before their time for sure, you can't help but also wonder if their bloody nosed synth sound would have stayed longer had they been born a few thousand miles closer to Europe, or at least in New York.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Tribal psychobilly blues, anyone? Welcome to The Gun Club, where the first rule is that everyone should listen to at least one album by the Jeffrey Lee Pierce-fronted, benchmark-setting, Los Angeline punk outfit. Well, actually, before that we should probably explain exactly why this lot broke the mould when they first landed in the very late-1970s.

At a time when everyone in the US was looking to genre pioneers like Iggy & The Stooges and the New York Dolls for inspiration, this team opted to roll time back much, much further, and start to bring elements of blues, country, and rockabilly to the punk party. The result was a blueprint which has, to some extent, had a huge impact on an array of later greats: Ezra Furman, Horton Heat, Jim Jones, BC Camplight... to name but a few.

Taken from old acetates and tapes, none of these have ever been released publically on vinyl before... Including the Tom Moulton remixes. Complete with a detailed booklet, it's collections like these that got us all into vinyl collecting in the first place. A unique history lesson, this really is a fantastic piece of work.

Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Missing Side M/N (13/14) with a small number of vinyl ever so slightly warped, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album.

Review: American power-pop group Jellyfish are celebrating their short but incredible career with an extremely limited one-time press run box set. This new box set features all six UK singles, pulled from the two albums - 1990's 'Bellybutton' and 1993's 'Spilt Milk' - (including the 4-track 'Scary-Go-Round' EP) which are pressed on multi-coloured 7" vinyl. Additionally, a unique bonus 7" featuring two covers, one of which is 'Think About Your Troubles', a tribute to Harry Nilsson, recorded by Roger Manning Jr and Andy Sturmer in February 1994, a few weeks after Nilsson's death ("it was the last thing Jellyfish did as a group", Roger recalls).

The audio has all been remastered especially for vinyl and as well as the singles in picture sleeves, this box set includes a 64-page booklet with detailed track-by-track guides from Roger Manning Jr, Jason Falkner, Chris Manning, Tim Smith, Eric Dover and band members and a newly written essay by Maura Johnston. The booklet is packed with previously unseen photographs, rare memorabilia and promotional items.

Review: Wow... This a serious package right here! A special dedication to the beats that helped make 1983 cult hip-hop movie Wild Style the big screen legend it's become, Kenny Dope has been given full access to all assets... And he's smashed it in every way. Each colour-coded cut is fully remastered, re-edited and brought back to life with timeless attention to groove detail while the liner book is full of images, quotes and tales from this unique and hugely creative time in pop cultural history. An authentic artefact, this is nothing short of an investment.

Review: This comprehensive selection brings fourteen bangers (no small fort-tune!) from L'Entourloop to our ears. This duo of hip-hop beatmakers and DJs has boasted an original and unifying sound from day dot, combining two musical confluent cousins we know work all two well: hip-hop and reggae. Now bringing several of their classics as well as a crock of original gems to an unusual but, for that reason, welcome 4x7" bundle for your listening pleasure, that's slated, in the artists' own words, to transform your evenings into a 'cheerful mess'.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Missing one 7" (Record 7 - Jackson 5 - Tribute Medley), but otherwise in excellent condition***

This special 7" boxset Motown State of Mind is a collection of Motown classics remixed by the legendary rapper, producer and member of D.I.T.C., Lord Finesse. The first two tracks tackle the one time King of Pop, while the undisputed soul god that is Marvin Gaye then gets some special treatment with an Underboss remix of "I Want You." The smooth grooves continue on DeBarge's "I Like It" (Soul Synopsis mix), which is pure sultry and steamy gold. Elsewhere Eddie Kendricks - "Body Talk" (TBG mix) is a string laced and slow motion disco funk gem and Sister of Love and Jackson 5 also get some careful treatment.

The album itself is incredible, with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals, while the cast list - which includes original electrofunk outfit Unlimited Touch, Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico - is similarly impressive. It's a great product, packed with brilliant music: a fitting finale to this portion of the ongping 'Expansions NYC' project.

There are many sides to this wonderful product of the psychedelic era, but perhaps not as widely known as their biggest album Forever Changes is the run of singles they put out between 1966 and 1969. For the first time, those ingles are gathered here as a beautifully presented box set, comprising eight 7"s with unique and original picture sleeves including previously hard to find promo-only records 'Que Vida' / 'Hey Joe' and 'Always See Your Face' / 'August'. In addition to the music there's a 62-page booklet with track-by-track annotation and never-before-seen photographs, making this a collectors item to truly treasure.

Review: We Take No Prisoners is a definitive collection of the band's singles from 1995 to 2006, presented as a nine 7" single box set, and expanded double CD and digital editions. Spanning tracks like the relentless 'Sacrifice', their distinctive cover of the Sex Pistols' 'God Save The Queen', and the semi-acoustic 'Whorehouse Blues', the compilation highlights the band's enduring songwriting talent. The set also includes rare live and radio edits, along with a previously unreleased promo interview with Lemmy and Mikkey Dee from 2004. This collection captures the essence of an era and the songs that fuelled the success of the albums they came from.

Review: Changing the 7-inch single dance music landscape with a single stroke, Most Excellent Unlimited's latest collaboration with famed DJ and edit master Danny Krivit is a motherlode of sure shots straight from Mr. K's personal stash. Most of the ten cuts have never appeared on the smaller format and are Krivit's edits exclusive to this release, making the collection an essential addition to any DJs play box and a deep dive into the top-shelf selections of one of the world's most talented dance floor conductors.

Matching slinky boogie with 80s street soul, hedonistic disco delights and jazzy groovers, danceable Afro beat and purple-tinged funk, the boldly diverse range of styles reflects not only Mr. K's well-honed taste but the traditionally multihued make-up of the classic New York City underground club sound.

The five singles have been remastered for loud club play, and come in a custom box. Also included are two dye-printed 7-inch slip mats, only available with this release.

Review: The arrival of the Acapellas Anonymous series in the mid/late '80s was a massive gamechanger, giving immediate access to DJs and producers to hundreds of vocal samples that would have taken a fortune (and a lifetime) to collect. Edit king Mr K has rebuilt, remastered, and carefully portioned them onto a five disc set of 7-inch singles, "including all the classic vocal bits that became iconic samples," and more than a few new additions to bring things up to date. You'll know more than a few of these on first listen, others you may have never even realised were samples, but no-one will underestimate the power of a great vocal sample dropping in the right way in the right mix. An absolute essential.

Review: House legend Danny Krivit is back on our charts with this uber-lush compilation pack that was originally put together for RSD 2018 but that, thankfully, we managed to secure a few copies for you on here! The pack comes in the form of his alias, Mr. K, and you'll seriously struggle to find better, more well-produced edits than these. Called The Funk Box, there is nothing on here you won't enjoy if you're a fan of soul, with most of Krivit's edits leaving enough space for the original to flourish while still pushing it far enough onto the middle of the dancefloor. And that's exactly it - if Mr. K touches one of your tunes, it will become danceable.

Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael production, female diva classic "Let's Get Together" backed with a previously unreleased NYC Peech Boys demo version of "Somebody Else's Guy." Tough South Bronx funk "Standing In Line". Synth epic, Krivit's classic edit of "Evolution". Disco Funk edit of Larry Levan's "Slap, Slap, Lickedy Lap". With much more in this diverse and remarkably sought after tracklist, surprises, like "Catch The Rhythm" (the only Boris Midney production regularly played at The Garage), along with Mr. K's previously Japan-only edit of Loleatta Holloway tour de force "I May Not Be There When You Want Me". Five singles impressively mastered with maximum fidelity and playability for an exclusive Record Store Day, including a bonus pair of newly designed, Mr. K seven-inch slipmats.

Review: Despite his London roots, rapper and beat-maker Lewis Parker has always excelled at making dusty, sample-heavy tracks that sound like they could have come out of New York in the midst of hip-hop's "golden era". For proof, check this brilliant box set, which gathers together some of his finest moments from the late 1990s and early 2000s on five "45s". There's a mix of killer vocal tunes, accompanying instrumentals and the kind of deep, head-nodding soundscapes that would once have been classed as trip-hop (he did feature prominently on Massive Attack's Melankoly label after all). It's not hyperbole to say that "The 45 Collection" contains some of the most entertaining and well-produced British hip-hop ever made.

Review: The past is never dead... Eminent Berlin house craftsman Rising Sun reflects over the many adventures he's taken us on via his Kristofferson Kristofferson imprint. Highly limited, heavyweight vinyl and loaded with new versions and mixes, Retrospective boasts some of his most touching moments: the trembling, naked fluctuations of "Underground, Yeah", the warm waves and hushed humanisation of "In My Heart Of Hearts", the dynamic chugs and classical string whitecaps of "Lift Up Your Faces", the rolling breaks of "Yours". With a soulful, almost hymn-like quality to his compositions throughout, Rising Sun once again reminds us of the importance of longevity and subtlety.

Review: Some 30 years after rising to prominence via a now legendary NYC radio show, veteran hip-hop DJs Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia have finally made a debut album. It sees them join forces with specially created nine-piece combo The M19s Band to serve up fresh covers of a range of well-known and obscure "dance floor bangers" (as the accompanying press release puts it). There are some superb interpretations, with the Police's dub disco jam "Voices Inside My Head" becoming a sweet soul-jazz treat, the Clash's "Magnificent Dance" reborn as a Latin jazz number (complete with Rich Medina spoken word vocal) and Womack & Womack's "Baby I'm Scared of You" a seductive, shuffling Afro-Cuban jazz standard. In a word: brilliant.

Review: 14 rare or previously unreleased slices of formative Motown history: these tracks have seen such little light of day technically they should have a vitamin D deficiency. From Stevie Wonder's LP and French EP only "I Want My Baby Back" to recently discovered "We're Gonna Be More Than Friends" by The Spinners via a very early recording from Marvin Gaye ("My Love For You"), this is a distinctive lesson in Motown's roots and development. And whether you've heard some of these before or not, none of them have never graced a 45 before (legally), so snap them up now before they return to the Universal Music vaults once more!

Review: Following the success of the first volume which sold out in 2017, Heavenly Sweetness decided with Francis Falceto to give a follow up - in the form of this box set of Ethiopian singles. It's a tribute of sorts to the music producer Ali Tango, who produced most of these EPs across 6 X 7". Falceto plunged into his impressive collection of records and there are great names of the golden age of Ethiopian music such as Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete, Ali Mohamed Birra, alongside less known artists to be rediscovered such as Muluquen Melesse, Alayew Mesfin and Seyoum Gebreyes. Including original artwork and labels, plus a poster and six stickers of all the covers. Limited edition, 2000 copies.

Review: If you've been digging the brilliant Ethiopiques series of compilations, which shine a light on the lesser-known Ethiopian music scene of the 1960s and '70s, you'll love this lavishly produced box set. Put together by series founder Francis Falceto, the box boasts fresh pressings of six impossible-to-find 7" singles and a booklet containing extensive liner notes. The musical treats come thick and fast, quickly jumping between evocative Ethiopian jazz, unique fusions of rhythm and blues and traditional East African styles, Hammond-heavy groovers and exotic dancefloor workouts that defy easy categorization. Given that it would cost you upwards of L600 to buy all of the original singles - assuming you could find them, of course - it's fair to say that Falceto's box is a bit of a bargain!

Review: This boxset offers a gold mine of southern soul, funk and r&b, showcasing previously unreleased gems from the iconic Memphis label Goldwax. Kicking off with James Carr's 1969 funk groove, 'Your Love Made A U-Turn', it sets the stage for a collection of tracks that blend gritty southern charm with soulful ballads. The Ovations' 'I Miss You' stands out as a Motor City classic, finally issued on vinyl, while the flip side, 'What Did I Do Wrong'. with its harmonica-driven stomp, is a crowd-pleaser. Goldwax stalwart Barbara Perry contributes a country-soul ballad, 'Welcome Home Baby', a grower that contrasts nicely with her fiery 'A Man Is A Mean Thing'. Willie Walker's early, brass-filled version of 'Lucky Loser' is a highlight, offering a raw southern groove two years before his funked-up Chess recording. The album also features a thrilling mix of soul vocals, including the Lyrics and Vel-Tones' sublime harmonies, and a mysterious track, 'It's Really Alright', that adds an enigmatic touch. Closing with Phillip & The Faithfuls' dramatic ballad and Lee "Shot" Williams' southern rave-up, this collection is robust and enjoyable.

Review: Originally intended to land before Christmas but delayed due to a combination of Brexit and COVID-19, We Jazz Records' second seven-inch singles box set is every bit as essential as its' predecessor. As you'd expect, Acclaimed percussionist and label regular Teppo Makynen features heavily throughout, delivering two sparse but drum-rich cuts with regular recording partner Timo Lassy (whose sax solos on both are superb). He also appearing later in the box as part of the Stance Brothers project (check the two versions of Afro-funk-goes-jazz jam 'Revolution Blue'). Elsewhere across the EP, you'll find four superb, loose-limbed jazz cuts from five-piece Koma Saxo and two percussive late-night numbers from Oaagaada. A great gift for the jazz lover in your life.

Review: Later this spring, authors Paul 'Smiler' Anderson and Mark 'Bax' Baxter will release "Scorcha!", a coffee table book celebrating the skinhead and suedehead movement of the late 1960s and early '70s. For the uninitiated, it was a largely white British working class movement inspired by both the dress of the Windrush generation and the ska, rocksteady and reggae music they brought with them from the Caribbean. This excellent ten disc seven-inch box set from Trojan has been designed as a musical accompaniment to the book. It boasts a wealth of classic cuts popular within the skinhead and suedehead scenes, both from well-known Jamaican artists and those that have largely been overlooked.

Review: Easily one of the most exciting music movies to land this year, the soundtrack the Northern Soul: The Film reflects its attention to detail. As does the presentation; a box of fourteen picture sleeve 45"s with a hardback book full of beautiful photography, this is a must for all Northern Soul aficionados. The cuts are well curated, too. Very few big obvious numbers and all straight up stompers... From the Temptations-inspiring "If This Is Love" by The Precisions to the great duelling vocals between Larry Williams and Johnny Watson on "Too Late". A proper artefact of what's set to be a very well received movie.

The Juno review team already have several of these heaters in our collective record horde but since the box set arrived there hasn't been a day passed without an admiring glance thrown in it's general direction. For those unfamiliar with the likes of "Supacat" and "Gunshot", they are fine examples of the Jeep Beat sample heavy instrumental hip hop sound Dope dabbled in during the early nineties. It's the presence here of both the thunderous "Blood Vibes" and the Minnie Ripperton sampling "Get On Down" that makes this box set nigh on essential.

Review: He might pretty much be cancelled these days but there is no denying the impact Kanye West has had on hip-hop. As recently as last year with Ty Dolla $ign he cooked up 'Vultures 1' which now comes as a special Carnival Edition and is a provocative, genre-blending affair that showcases both artists' strengths and controversies. The production is sonically rich with contributions from top-tier talents like Timbaland and James Blake, and guest appearances from venerated verse men such as Playboi Carti and Travis Scott. Tracks like 'Carnival' stand out with their infectious drum patterns and energetic deliveries even if the lyrical content is not up there with their usual best work. Despite the controversies surrounding West, this album achieved commercial success and topped the US Billboard 200 chart.
