Review: Artificial Owl Recordings welcomes aboard New Yorkers Satoshi Tomiie and Naotake Gunji for the label's fifth release; a recording of their collaborative A_A project and live show, which first came to light at the Fridman Gallery in Manhattan. A_A, an ongoing audio project, explores the visceral tension between floor-centric ambient electronica and improvised sound/audio performance. Here, found and object-activated sounds fire a collective dub trigger, producing a distinctly somatic regrounding across five original works.

ASC - "The Noncolour Entity"
Vaccine - "Irradiate"
Sam KDC - "Lovesick"
ASC & Synth Sense - "Glimpse"
Review: Limited to a pressing of just 250 (with a promise of no represses) this clear vinyl release is special in every sense. Powered by some of the most exciting names on the fringes of bass and electronica; each of the four cuts strut with raw melodic futurism. "The Noncolour Entity" rumbles with a dubby techno groove a la Funk D'Void. "Irradiate" comes with an almost Bonobo-like dreaminess while "Lovesick" shakes and shudders with a sub-soaked groove and bright, bold swinging breakbeats. "Glimpse" closes the show on a timeless analogue note. Coming on strong like an old Guy Called Gerald record, it's all synths and classic electro breakbeats. Outstanding.

Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Review: Senking and DYL reunite after their notable collaboration back on 2020's EP Uniformity Of Nature, this time going long on their first full-length, Diving Saucer Attack. This new work spans a total of six tracks, two of which have been produced individually and so highlight their shared passion for dub-heavy and adventurous electronic music while also bringing out the subtle differences in their styles. The album opens with 'Six Doors Down', a track featuring throbbing bass and haunting synths while subsequent cuts like 'A7r380R' explore intricate soundscapes before culminating in the sombre closing piece, 'Not Just Numbers.'

Review: Holland's Shimmering Moods imprint inaugurates its release schedule with what seems to be the first collaboration from Dutch newcomers, Framewatcher and Sonornote. Coming out of the Amsterdam district, this new label is set to provide us with rich, compelling and dubby electronic amalgamations judging from this debut release. The two artists' sounds fuse into a perfect unison, where spectral modular sonics drop into shreds of field recordings and neat little synth glitches. We've been told these are super limited and won't come back after they've gone, so act fast!

Review: So what happens when a European post-punk outfit meets an American 'ambient country ensemble'? The answer: A Nanocluster. In fact, three. This being the third. Immersion first met SUSS in September 2021, and the results were mesmerising. Three years on and the impact was no less staggering. Originally landing in September 2024, part tres takes us into the kind of musical places we're used to finding Spiritualized or Mogwai, and even then the references are misleading. For as many times as Nanocluster Vol. 3 sucks us into a thick soup of ambient and atmosphere, inviting us to get lost in opiate cloud formations, it also asks us to jump on board a stream train of rolling and driving rhythms, juggernauts gathering depth and complexity as they forge ahead. A stunning collection of highly evocative and incredible musical instrumentals.

Review: Reverb, sombre strings, a slight flamenco touch, dynamic range - something so often lost in today's music - together with the kind of heavy metal distortion you'd expect from a band like Mastodon is what makes this Landscape Of Open Eyes 7" such an intriguing and special release. Erik Enocksson introduces his new Lakes Of Grass And Gold project with the support of Digitalis Limited's Svarte Greiner (real name Erik K. Skodvin) and together the two have many years of abstract and acoustic experimentations behind them - if you're a fan of Roll The Dice, but after something with a harder edge, this is it.

Vera Logdanini - "Vplanet" (6:53)
Review: Following fine EPs from Healing Force Project and Mesak in 2017 and 2018, On Board Music flips the script on its first and only vinyl release of 2019. "Point A" is the Berlin-based label's first mini-compilation and it's well worth a listen. Lanoche kicks things off via a spot of ultra-deep dub techno/ambient techno fusion (the wonderful "Love Fall", before Yugen doffs a cap towards the hypnotic, synthesizer-driven sound of late 1970s Krautrock on the suitably cosmic "Phantom". Serena Butler's "Fertile Fancy" is an immersive drift through enveloping ambient, Estrato Aurora's "Icnita" a bubbling deep techno epic and Vera Logdanini's "Vplanet" an acid-flecked trip into locked-in electronic hypnotism. In other words, this is a very fine collection of cuts.

291out - "Urania (Titoli Di Coda)"
SVN - "Low"

Doc L Junior - "Modul 32"
Review: Soundtracks For No Film Vol. 1 is a rather charming mini album of outer-spatial, conceptual electronics from the always on point Acido Records label, seemingly tasking contributors to deliver arrangements worthy of soundtracking film. Madteo sets the tone with "Science Fiction" a haunting spectral cut with little regard for beat structures that could feasibly sit in alongside his brilliant LP for Sahko last year. Alongside this, the A Side features three short form productions, with 291out's "Urania (Titoli Di Coda)" the highlight, sounding very much like the music you might hear during the end credits of a forgotten 80s sci-fi drama. Complementing this, sometime Sex Tags Mania artist Doc L Junior is given the whole of the B Side to draw out an expansive, epic synthscapes "Modul 2".

Review: Sanderson Dear's Stasis Recordings released the original Time Capsule compilation in 2020 - a 20-track exploration of ten different ambient techno artists exploring two ideas each in compact form for a box set of 7"s. Now the label has revisited some of the project's standout moments and offered a chance to enjoy extended versions gathered on a single 12". From Maps Of Hyperspace shaping out atmospheric halls of synth work on 'Beta' to Glo Phase offering some gorgeous, sparkling grooves on 'Fire Flies', there's plenty of ground covered on this release. Of course the mighty John Beltran is a big drawer too, and his typically stellar 'The Descendent' doesn't disappoint in its full extended version.

Jonny Nash - "Cristina & Carolina" (4:16)
Suzanne Kraft - "Roberto & Giovanni" (3:47)
Review: Jonny Nash's Melody Is Truth label has barely put a foot wrong to date, with the ambient imprint serving up a steady stream of atmospheric, sun-kissed treats. The label's latest missive marks its' first foray into the 7" market, and contains a track apiece from Nash and similarly minded artist Suzanne Kraft. While the latter's woozy, melancholic and gently whistling "Roberto & Giovanni" sounds like a brilliant cross between Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street" and the producer's own take on ambient, it's Nash's A-side, "Cristina & Carolina", that really impresses. Full of his trademark, lilting mid-western guitar lines, echoing audio textures and shuffling, bossa-influenced beats, it's nothing less than audible sunshine.

The Phantom - "Across The River, Beneath The Trees" (12:32)
The Phantom - "Europa" (11:33)
Sad City - "Limbo" (21:56)
Review: The 2nd part of the 4 part split (Schleissen) series welcomes rising stars of the experimental end of modern electronica, with Warsaw's The Phantom and Glagow's Sad City bringing a lush, Fourth World ambience to ErB002.

Emotional Response returns to the Schleissen series with another cross-European exploration of ambient minimalism, film sources, field recordings and fluid soundscapes to create an over-whelming album of beauty for the listener to simply let go and wash away to. This time the influences are softer, but still prevalent, with forbears Satie, Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Russel, Cunningham, Toop and of course of Hassel and Eno all acknowledged and explored through structure and the gentle syncopation of melody or occasional rhythm. With a nod to the film works of Tangerine Dream (or is it Global Communcation?) The Phantom follows up his outstanding LP1 with a move further in to the ethereal. Working as one piece,
Across The River, Beneath The Trees and Europa go beyond the real train with their blissful, floating arrangements creating an atmospheric blanket that consumes you. This is matched by up and coming producer Sad City. With 2 recent EPs on Phonica's Special Editions series as well as his debut on Underwater Peoples, his offering, Limbo, shows an exemplary understanding of sound design, resulting in an immersive, panoramic 18 minutes of pure music. Ambience, drone and modulation interwine and slowly engulf the listener so, as the title suggests, the only option is to be still. A change from SchleiBen 1 then, ErB002 is gentler on the mind and ears, but still challenges you to stop and (un)listen.

Review: Saaad is the Tolouse-based drone project by Romain Barbot, who works together with Greg Buffier. The duo have released on labels like Hands In the Dark and BLWBCK and have collaborated with sonic surrealists such as Insiden for Paris' In Paradisum imprint, but Saaad land on Russia's fledgling Grains Of Sand Records for their outing. Much like their previous output, Delayed Summer is a cinematic, HD-quality drone masterpiece, where apocalyptic swells of sound spread across a vast landscape. The opener "Pole (Jam XIV)" is ringing and full of doom, while other pieces such as "I Can Feel You (Jam III)" are more sinister and could easily accompany any sci-fi film made between 1970 and 1999. This is serious stuff, it's for the sound sommelier.

Music Removed (7:32)
Patterns (2:16)
Vexillations (10:04)
Review: Gary Caruth's Sad City project has progressively attracted ever more praise, not least since his Shapes In Formation album landed last year. Straddling purest ambient and abstract rhythmical electronica with a unique approach that is all his own, Caruth is returning to Emotional Rescue with a 10" that revisits three of the tracks from Shapes In Formation and magnifies them as the longer form versions they originally were. "Music Removed" was a particularly strong track on the album, and this new extended version lets the pneumatic percussion and soulful vocal croon bleed together in the most captivating of ways. "Patterns" sounds even more elegant in its pagan ambient finery with a longer run time, and "Vexillations" flits between poised static and cascading chimes with the deft touch that has come to define the Sad City sound.

Review: Gary Caruth may not be prolific - thus far, he's released just two 12" singles under the Sad City guise in three years - but his music rarely fails to disappoint. Introduction To Lisboa, his second 12" for Phonica Special Editions, is another dreamy, slow-burning delight. All six tracks are woozy, evocative and immersive in feel, with soft focus rhythms underpinning bespoke ambient pads, kaleidoscopic melodies (see the superb "Scyphozoa") and intoxicated textures. The results are rarely less than hugely enjoyable, with the title track - a bustling fusion of Chris Watson style field recordings and drifting ambience - being particularly memorable.

Review: A new year brings a third S.A.M. release on his own Delaphine label from Samuel Andre Madsen and a noted change in approach from the Danish producer. Whereas the two previous S.A.M. 12"s have seen Madsen explore the more minimal and dubby strains of techno with aplomb, this third record sees him retain the sense of atmosphere but discard with the need for any rhythmic backbone. It's telling that both tracks here are quite exquisite ambient journeys, suggesting Madsen is currently in the midst of an inspirational production patch. If you need some ambience to set the tone for a mix both tracks here fit the bill perfectly, with the orchestral touches of the B-side our personal favourite.

These fine revisions are by fellow purveyors of Scandinavian underground electronics. Northern Electronics main man Abdulla Rashim's take on the title track is even more haunting and emotive than the original while Swedish trio Yen Towers take on "Endless Nights" is rather savage in its restraint and quite chilling, truth be told. Finally Astro:Dynamics affiliated Quiltland's remix of "Motor City" retains the old school charm of the original in a great modern synth-pop interpretation.

He brings with him plenty of invention across a quartet of escapist ambient cuts. 'Dino' starts like a spring day, with tweeting birds and rippling chords that warm you through like rays on your face. 'Observatory' has an interwoven mix of percussion and pads that make for an off-balance rhythm while 'En' is like an aural hiccup as it rides up and down with wooden hits, jungle humidity and tropical sound effects. 'Ziggurat' closes with a more cosmic vibe. It all adds up to a beautiful EP.

Review: Following last year's strong cassette release Prisoners Of Gravity on Astro:Dynamics, Dave Saved returns with a new offering for like-minded label Gang Of Ducks, and it finds the Italian producer exploring yet more oblique yet curiously enchanting soundscapes and textures. There is still plenty of melody present to draw you in, not least on opening track "Power & Silence", but still a whisper of rhythm can be found straining underneath the cloying synth tones, such as the strangled shuffle that tries to propel "No Lights". Things take a darker turn in the mechanical murk of "Virtual Feelings", while Aisha Devi drops a powerful and staggered remix of "Power & Silence" and GOD reworks "Virtual Feelings" into a slow but cavernous techno roller with a healthy sprinkling of dust on top.

Review: As the official soundtrack to Claire Sanford and Josephine Anderson's documentary Texada, New-York based composer Elori Saxl's latest record comes issued on a steadfast, standalone vinyl edition. Texada explores the evolving connection between people and the remote Texada Island, British Columbia, shaped by ancient limestone formations and industrial history. Saxl transforms these themes into sound, blending analog synthesizers, processed baritone saxophone (by Henry Solomon) and field recordings of water and rock. Her compositions evoke stone textures and the lunar-tidal motion of waves, with tracks like 'The Quarry' capturing the drive of resource extraction, and 'The Most Special Place' reflecting nostalgia and discovery, merging human and geological scales.

Islands
Review: In the new year things are only getting freakier for the Gravity Graffiti camp as label core member Riccardo Schiro takes the reins once again. "Sine Phase," as the title might well imply, is a focused trip into rhythmic synth modulation with a techno pulse and drippy effects processing guaranteed to soak into your cerebellum. "Islands" charges further into experimental terrain, ditching any semblance of a beat in favour of free-wheeling texture and tone that sounds as though it was wrenched from a particularly fruitful experimental session. As the plot thickens for this ever-intriguing label, our advice is to strap in for the long haul experience.
