We Gettin' Down
We Gettin' Down (limited 7")
Cat: AOE 006. Rel: 21 May 15
We Gettin' Down (4:22)
The Power & The Glory (4:10)
Review: In amongst their programme of May essentials, Athens of the North have focused on highlight the grand soul escapades of Master Weldon Irvine across two killer sevens. We Gettin' Down the second and final of these and features two tracks from Irvine's 1974 LP for RCA Spirit Man. The more scholarly ears out there will of course recognise elements of "We Gettin' Down" from A Tribe Called Quest classic "Award Tour" and it's been lifted by everyone from Dego's Tek 9 project to bandy legged pop star Jamiroquai over the years. It's a pleasure from start (what a moog riff) to end and is complemented by the jazzed up bliss of "The Power & The Glory". Athens of the North are really spoiling us!

Homey (4:16)
Review: Mr. Weldon Johnathan Irvine is one of the many great artists who were part of the 80s funk, jazz, and soul scene. He is said to have been a super clam and gentle soul and that is clear from the music, which is superbly laidback and welcoming. This 45rpm takes a nice breezy jaunt through his jazzy world with innovative keyboard work and warm double bass and horns. There is a more smoky sound on the b-side which is a chill groove with lovely melodica and guitar sounds to nod along to. This is the first time this music has been available on 7".

Review: The impact of Weldon Irvine's music across a wealth of genres cannot be overstated with his jazzy piano playing and compositions regularly passed down to newer generations. Artists like Q-Tip and Mos Def are noted admirers of the jazz-funk artist, and the distinct sounds of Irvine echo across the ages in samples etched into hip-hop history. The album version of Time Capsule was originally released in 1973, and this 10" features two versions of 'Deja vu' on the A-side and 'Feelin' Mellow' and 'Watergate --- Don't Bug Me!' on the B.

Deja Vu (Exclusive 7" version) (3:42)
I Am (1:25)
Bananas (2:18)
Review: Weldon Johnathan Irvine is enjoying a return to the spot light this month as Dynamite Cuts serve up a trio of reissues of some of his best work. He recorded it all during the 80s, when the British funk, soul and jazz scene was at its most vibrant best and this is a fine expand of that. As always with this famously relaxed and easy going artist work, the music reflects his warm spirit in sound. This limited 45rpm opens with a special 7" cut of 'Deja Vu' which is mellifluous and glowing thanks to the molten Rhodes chords. On the flip is 'I Am' and then 'Bananas' gets you shaking your limbs with its off-grid beats and busy chord work.

Turkish Bath (6:55)
Review: Back in the 80s, Weldon Johnathan Irvine was a core part of the sul, jazz and funk scene. He was an amiable man who put out plenty of records that reflected that and now some of them are making their way onto 45rpm for the first time ever. This latest 7" opens with 'Fat Mouth' which is a busy and dynamic cut with mad keys work, crashing drums and a real sense of urgency as it hurries along. There is a more reflective and thoughtful mood to the gorgeous flip side, which encourages the mind to wander on the heart chords and breezy grooves.

Review: Ilija Rudman shows his class here with two edits for the always-on-point Brooklyn Highs label. He turns his hand to an original by Soul Men aka Black Moses and Part 1 will her you lost in a reverie. The meandering, stoned, slow-motion funk licks, gentle drums and wallowing chords all wash over you like a soothing breeze. The Higher Ground mix part II introduces buttery male vocals that drip with eroticism and soul. This one should come with a pregnancy warning.

Nothing At All (3:04)
Review: From soul to disco, pop to balladry, Athens Of The North can do it all, and often much better than most. Another exhibit to back that up now comes in the form of this 7" from Isabr'm and his 'If I Had You.' It's a straight up bit of boogie fire, with soul overtones good enough to suit the L850 plus you will pay if you try to get an OG copy. Next to that superb a-side is 'Nothing At All' on the flip, a sombre track with aimless sax leads conveying a sense of romantic loss.

Reasons
Review: While rooted in jazz, the output of Bristol outfit Ishmael Ensemble has always incorporated elements from different styles - something we attribute to main man Pete Cunningham's prior career as a DJ and a producer, as well as his long involvement in the eclectic-minded Bristol music scene. It's perhaps fitting then that the band's latest missive is a five-track collaboration with another West Country hero, MC, singer and producer Rider Shafique. His role as a "dub poet" is explored on largely ambient opener 'C90 Intro', while he channels the spirit of Tricky and Massive Attack on jazz-meets-trip-hop jam 'Polestar'. Elsewhere, 'Reasons' is a hazy, rising and atmospheric contemporary jazz song, 'Salam' is a harp-infused ambient soul song, and 'New Era' is a thrilling jazz epic.

Review: Pete Cunningham's hybrid electronic/acoustic jazz collective Ishmael Ensemble has been right at the forefront of innovation when it comes to those sounds. For his latest project he links up with lyricist and MC Rider Shafique. They first met some six years ago when Cunningham was struck by "his powerful way with words." As such they got in the studio, Cunningham embraced a more bass heavy sound to his style and drew on his love of the likes of dub kings King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood. Coupled with Rider's voice and you have a superb new record.

Who's That Lady
St Louis Blues
Review: The Fryers sub-label of Jazzman Records come correct once again with this crucial 7" reissue from The Isley Brothers! With a career spanning some 50 years and covering R&B, Rock, Funk, Soul and Disco, it's fair to say The Isley Brothers have been one of the most influential groups on how 20th Century music turned out, yet few people actually know that their universally regarded 1973 hit "That Lady" was in fact a cover version of a track they'd previously recorded a decade earlier. Presented here in all its dusty glory, "Who's That Lady" is a jazzy doo-wop workout that will have the collectors out there running towards the turntables to find out whose version it is. On the flip is their wonderful version of the Blues standard "St. Louis Blues" which has been freshly pressed from the original master tapes!

Watarase (feat Yuki Kaneko Symphonic Poem) (13:15)
Review: Some expansive, cinematic, orchestral spiritual jazz for you here, from the trio of talents that Fumio Itabashi, Kuniyiki and Henrik Schwarz. While the latter two are generally better-known for their deep and sometimes tech-tinged house and ambient productions, the original mix of 'Watarese' (featured here on side B) is a dense, immersive jazz soundscape laden with evocative Japanese vocals, improvised piano, moody orchestration and definite nods towards vintage free-jazz. Spiritual Life supremo Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell provides the remix and, somewhat predictably, steals the show. His take is gently rhythmic, sun-splashed spiritual jazz full of hand percussion, fluid piano motifs and rubbery double bass.

Review: Italian producer, music engineer and owner of The Sleepers Records, Ivan Makvel continues to service the modern funk scene, this time with his synth-pop and disco-funk fusion featuring Jolie Davenport's distinct vocals. 'Runaway' has a dense synth on its glittery instrumental, giving it that vintage workout video energy. Fitting considering the title. 'Like That' is more tongue in cheek with its zany instrumental: the synths are similarly thick, with almost deafening hand claps it's the perfect dancefloor filler. This 7" is a testament to the power of modern funk, housed on a super limited beautiful bone white disc. Makvel is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Review: Repress time: released last year on a limited run of 45s, Chet Ivey's double-A "Dose Of Soul" / "Get Down With Greater" returns to the relief of collectors and funk lovers who missed out. Two of many swelteringly funky gems on his Sylvia Funk Recordings album curated in 2017, "Dose Of Soul" has a raw edge and looseness that's held together with Ayers-style vibraphone chords, while "Get Down With Greater" is much more of a traditional funk jam, with the organ player and bassist playing at their fullest of flavours and Ivey leading in his inimitable 'poisonous' style. The first tune on this pocket-rocket of a 7" is 'High', a funky weapon that is high on life and built around well-syncopated drums and a percussive bassline. The icing on the cake is Mishell's vocals which weave in out of the synth stabs and lush keys, all of which are well arranged. Flip it over and you'll get lost in the funk once more with 'In The Dust' with its masterfully rhythmic bassline and more of those buttery Mishell vocals.

Review: French fusionista Izem steps up to Gamm with three international boundary-smelting funk gems that star point blank into the future while retaining strong roots to the past. "ITT" is almost techno in its relentlessness as it breaks into a hyper-charged, steppy Afrobeat. With its Latin licks and clipped chants, "Celia" is so Brazilian you can hear the cheers from Rio Maracana Stadium. Finally, "Hajja" is the most retrospective of the three thanks to its electro boogie bass, lavish pianos and sultry French vocal. Three edits made wholly his own, each of these cuts emphatically explains why Izem has enjoyed white hot hype from the Wah Wah crew, Gilles Peterson and Quantic.

A-side "Blow Your Mind", a talkbox-sporting P-funk jam that reminded us of early '80s era Roger Troutman releases - all stabbing, kaleidoscopic synth motifs, colourful solos, punchy machine drums and lyrics celebrating "funk" - is particularly special, sounding as it does like a genuine relic of a bygone era. Almost as good is flipside P-funk instrumental "Virgin Lion", which sounds a little like an instrumental revision of the A-side with added flash-funk guitars and D-Train style synth doodles.

A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Review: Originally released back in 1968, Freddie Scott's "(You) Got What I Need" is a US soul staple that went on to be sampled by late '80s rapper and beat boxer Biz Markie on his breakout track "Just A Friend." Scott's track came some five years into a successful singing career and featured production from celebrated duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. It's paired up on this 7" with another track that was later popularised in hip hop, Ike & Tina Turner's "Get Nasty". Depending on your view of late '90s hip hop, you'll either fondly remember how Jurassic 5 sampled this track for "Concrete Schoolyard" or jolt at being reminded of Chali 2NA's somewhat grating vocal delivery.

Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. Review: The debut recording from The Ancients, an intergenerational trio featuring Isaiah Collier, William Hooker and William Parker initially formed to play Milford Graves' Mind Body Deal exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. This double LP captures the raw energy and improvisational brilliance of their live performances, showcasing the enduring legacy of free jazz. Collier's tenor saxophone soars and wails, drawing on influences from John Coltrane to Charles Gayle, while grounding his explorations in a deep understanding of structure and form. Hooker's drumming is a force of nature, a whirlwind of polyrhythms and explosive energy that pushes the music to its limits. And Parker, a true legend of the avant-garde, anchors the music with his virtuosic bass playing, creating a foundation for the trio's improvisational flights. The music is both a celebration of the rich history of free jazz and a bold exploration of new sonic territory. The Ancients tap into the spirit of their predecessors, channeling the energy of the Cecil Taylor Unit and the Ornette Coleman Trio, while forging their own unique path, the power of collective improvisation looming large throughout.

He had become a great after playing with greats like Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. For this session, he hooked up with four younger and equally adventurous jazz musicians eager to innovate and this recording captures the magic they cooked up. It marked the debut of pianist Michael Garrick within the Quintet and he profoundly influenced the group's direction and arguably reshaped the broader British jazz sound. Without exaggeration, this album marks a pivotal point in the evolution of British jazz.

Not least, this might have been because it was released when Coltrane had moved onto more one-off release projects, shortly after his more widely publicized contract with Prestige Records ended. Nonetheless, it's cited as a deeply special album, resonant of the slinky sound of postwar New York jazz inasmuch as it is of the archetypal feline form.

While much of their finery is the sole preserve of library music and film scores (they worked with likes of Morricone and Umiliani) this first self-titled album from 1970 is a blueprint for their abilities, energy and superb sense of groove. Key examples are the sweaty piano-thumping jazz funk of "Les", the loose-stringed hoe-down stomps of "Weston" and the cosmic-before-its-time odyssey "Eff Cuore". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Limited for Record Store Day, you won't be disappointed.

Review: The second Record Store Day special reissue from hugely hip Italian quartet I Marc 4, GLP 1002 was the second in their self-titled four-album series released in 1970. The jazz dynamic between the foursome is strong from the off as the frenetic "Drumming" opens the show and leads to whole worlds of dreamy lounge ("Key Board"), swampy sleazy cosmic rock ("Filter") and the type of cheeky funk that wouldn't have gone amiss on a Carry On Movie or two ("Mask") Crisp funk, this will never go old...

Review: The Ethiopian Ibex Band's 1976 album Stereo Instrumental Music is being re-released as a cornerstone of Ethiopian music. This record is credited with shaping the modern sound of Ethiopian music and the band's enduring influence can be felt in the works of legends like Aster Aweke, Girma Beyene and Mulatu Astatke. Created by Giovanni Rico and Selam Woldemariam, Stereo Instrumental Music is part of a significant legacy that challenges the idea of a "golden age" of Ethiopian music and highlights the constant evolution of the sound. The Ibex Band, later known as The Roha Band, has remained central to that and Ethiopia's wider scene.

Review: Contemporary afro funk wizardry abounds as London-based band Ibibio Sound Machine don a pair of disco, funk and boogie spectacles and study their Nigerian roots with attention to detail. The end result is a truly unique fusion of sounds that range from the 80s synth boogie of "The Talking Fish" to the Fela-level freneticisms of "I'm Running". Other highlights include the slamming pop jitters of "Let's Dance", the crazed synth squiggles and slap bass madness of "The Tortoise" and the alluring juxtaposition of modern drum production, captivating poetry and jazzy dynamics of "Prodigal Son". It arrives on Gearbox records and features music taken from his sold out date back in summer 2023 at London's Barbican. The man himself is now 84 years old but is drawing on all those years playing to make the most majestic music of his career, with heart swelling piano and enticing melodies all serving as life affirming reminders. Parts of this feature the full recording including the audience and parts are music only, with spoken word snippets interspersed to make it seem all the more cosmic.

Review: Popularly known to fans as "Ice" - a rare case of hypocorism in colloquial fan band nicknaming - Strut Recordings document a rare record from the vaults of the luminary Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, one that is arguably the closest in their catalogue to the signature sound defining their earlier work. Marked by an especially complex funk rhythmology, this record was pressed contemporaneously with the infamous Soul Makossa and Malik sessions; but compared to their earlier works, Afro Agban pushes deeper into jazz-rock territory. 'Ozan Koukle' has espceially become a known but coveted missing link for turntable taxonomists, who'll thank their lucky stars for the fact that it is now available in full.

Review: Ice's early work captures a pivotal moment in funk's evolution, weaving together taut grooves and vibrant African-inspired rhythms. Recorded during the band's formative years, the music brims with raw energy and creative ambition. Polished basslines drive the tracks, while percussion bursts with a vitality that speaks to their Parisian influences at the time. Horn stabs and tightly wound guitar lines add layers of complexity, and the occasional vocal inflection injects a sense of urgency. With each listen, the production reveals new texturesismall details that elevate the record beyond its era.

Review: Those turned on by Spiritual Jazz should already be aware of West Coast combo Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids. They've been playing and recording together since the 1970s, though We Be All Africans is only their sixth full-length outing. Predictably, it's a fine set, effortlessly fusing their spiritual roots with elements of jazz-funk, soul and, of course, Afro-jazz. Highlights are plentiful, from the swinging, Tony Allen style rhythms, swirling vocals and punchy horns of "Rhapsody In Berlin", and the clarinet-sporting sweetness of the brilliantly percussive "Epiphany", to the stretched-out drum workout "Traponga", which sounds like the work of three drummers and a whole troupe of percussionists.

Review: Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids' Shaman! is a bold and adventurous new record. It is a study in jazz that takes cues from myriad different sounds and scenes. Sub-Saharan jazz, Afrobeat, free-jazz, Afro-Cuban music, spoken word, and more all colour in the tracks which have been written by a large cast of musicians. The album was recorded din London and features Pyramids co-founder Simmons on flute, longtime band member Sandra Poindexter on violin, plus guitar from Bobby Cobb, and three new members from Europe in Jack Yglesias, Ruben Ramon Ramos, and Gioele Pagliaccia. It makes for an expressive but introspective world that draws you deep into its midst, where you will be oh so happy to get lost.

Review: Those familiar with the catalogue of Idris Ackabor and the Pyramids will tell you that there's always been something special about the long-serving band's inspired blend of spiritual jazz, space-age sounds, Afro-jazz and extra-percussive polyrhythms. Even so, new album "Shaman!" is particularly awe-inspiring. Constructed as a four-act musical journey stretched across two slabs of wax, it adds a wealth of intriguing additional musical ingredients (think dubby soul-jazz, Afrobeat, jazz-rock and free-jazz) to their already highly seasoned sound soup with predictably tasty results. It takes a few listens to really get to grips with (there's a lot going on, despite the set's obvious accessibility), but it's such a good album that you'll want to fully immerse yourself as many times as possible.

Review: It may not be one of Idris Muhammad's most celebrated albums, but "Kabsha" is arguably one of the most notable. For starters, the rollcall of musicians featured on the 1980 release is incredibly impressive, with Art Farmer collaborator Ray Drummond on Drums and George Coleman (once a member of Max Roach's regular band) and Pharoah Sanders taking it in turn to showcase their tenor saxophone skills. Musically, it sees the drummer and his distinguished guests offer up a fine selection of post-bop treats. Highlights include the bustling, loose-limbed brilliance of opener "GCCG Blues", the unshakeable energy of "St M" - which includes a series of virtuoso drum solos by Muhammad - and the fizzing joy that is closing cut "Little Feet".

Review: Iftin is a band from Somalia that has a cult status amongst those who know. This is the first-ever retrospective of their music and it has taken seven years to get together. The music is taken from cassettes recorded between 1982 and 1987 at Al-Uruba hotel's secret studio. They were often performed for crowds in the basement of Somalia's national theatre and mix up Banaadiri rhythms from the south of Somalia, vocalists from Mogadishu and reggae-styled guitar riffs from Dhaanto all powered by brass that bends the traditions of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Truly world music.

Review: First Time Out by Theodora Ifudu first came out on a Nigerian pressing back in 1981, and it has been regarded a classic and a point of inspiration ever since. Not only does the album capture the rise of boogie and disco in her native homeland, but it also pushed the classic sound onto a newer, fresher platform that is still sounding somewhat different to her contemporaries. Our favourite tune on the A-side has to be "Gbata Ngwa (Egwu Abia)", its rolling bassline and bittersweet vocals working wonders, but the sounds of "That Man" and "The Way We Are" are equally ear-opening arrangements that will undoubtedly continue to have relevance into the next decade. A majestic album from a multi-talented Nigerian woman.

Studio long player number 16 from American rock 'n' roll-punk icon Iggy Pop almost never was. Virgin EMI Records rejected the record after first getting their hands on it, potentially because a good chunk of it takes the form of cover versions sung in French, and despite the widening and supposed democratisation of music in the 21st Century, some majors are still prone to snub anything that might be difficult to sell (in fact, they might be more prone in the era of wafer thin budgets).
For proof, the man himself believed his label was looking for a guitar offering with popular contemporary punk types involved, and "didn't think they would make any money" or that his fans would enjoy this outing - "very sensible attitudes for a sensible sort of person, but that's a different sort of person than I am," he expounded. Thanks to Thousand Mile Inc for stepped up and putting Apres out in 2012, then, as the collection of largely delicate, Romantic fire-side troubadour kindling is deeply effective and evocative.

Review: You can always trust Iggy Pop to do things his own way. When he presented the idea of Apres to Virgin, his label rejected the proposition of smooth cover versions sung in French, so Pop took his work elsewhere. Sure enough, Pop's fanbase love him for his unpredictability and the album has become something of a sleeper hit, even getting praise from Bob Dylan who very rarely dishes it out. Covering Serge Gainsbourg, Yoko Ono, Edith Piaf and Cole Porter amongst others, Pop has fun with this sentimental ballads while of course still sounding unmistakably like he does - a gravelly voiced anti-maestro indulging a different side to his muse.

Review: Deftly weaving everything from 70s soul to AOR to city pop into his sound, contemporary Japanese musician Cantaro Ihara makes pitch-perfect groove-forward pop music. His second album to follow his P-Vine debut, C, released in 2020, Portray moves into an ever-expansive compositional smorgasbord, erring more on the side of the symbolic and sprawlingly stylistic than the purely non-contextual, channelling a knowledge of music unbound by genre. From a Japanese-language cover of free soul legend Weldon Irvine's 'I Love You' to the Ihara original 'Twiny', the lead singles are already off to the races. Then comes a feature from Japanese trumpeter Yusuke Sase on 'Baby So In Love', which catapults the album into neo-soul territory, bringing a new twist to a timeless sound. Meanwhile, a feature from Bialystocks keyboardist Go Kikuchi on 'Yoru no Nagare (The Flow of the Night)' sees one of Ihara's most instantly iconic melodies played with a gentle sophistication that could move you to tears in one moment, and have you two-stepping the next. To conclude: this is a mellow, wide-ranging city pop bombshell from a rising star whose light is too bright to miss.
