Review: The New York-based (U)nity is made up of Michael Valeanu, Axel Tosca Laugart, Chris Smith, Max Cudworth and Amaury Acosta. They formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. They say they've been influenced by everyone from Chucho Valdes to Art Blakey to Led Zeppelin to Kendrick Lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. "Guarapachanga" is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at The New School. It's derived from the style known as guarapachangeo - the most advanced form of Cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. On this recording, (U)nity is graced with a guest performance by Grammy Award winner Pedrito Martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on Cuban music. Martinez is also a priest in the Yoruba religion and a historian of Cuban culture.

Over its eight and a half minutes, "Guarapachanga" twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from Latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. The whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the Afro-Cuban essence that is the band's lifeblood. The white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous DJs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. If you didn't know "Guarapachanga" was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a Loft classic; yet it's also as fresh and exciting as anything you'll hear this year.

Review: 1974's Coming Right At You, the sole album from 100% Pure Poison, has long been a sought-after jazz-funk gem. Soul Brother has previously reissued the rare (and increasingly expensive) LP, though this double 7" marks the first time most of these tracks have been available on wax since 2001. Check first opener (and title track) "Windy C", a superb chunk of lolloping, laidback jazz-funk that sits somewhere between Bob James and Cymande, before turning your attention to the slow-burn soulful delights of string-laden torch song "Puppet On A Chain". Over on the second 7", "No More City, No More Country" is a more hard-spun Blaxploitation funk affair, while "Hole In My Shoe" is a horn-fired slab of J.B's style funk-soul fusion.

My Little Someone (4:16)
Review: 100% Pure Poison were formed in 1974 by nine American soldiers based in West Germany. During a period of leave, they popped down to Cannes in France to perform, were spotted by EMI Records, and were flown to London to record what turned out to be their only album, Coming Right At You. The record flopped at the time, but has since become sought-after amongst Northern Soul collectors. The two tracks here are taken from that set, and appear on 7" for the first time since the '70s. A-side "You Keep Coming Back" is a near perfect, heartfelt soul anthem- think eyes-closed vocals, sustained horns and Motown harmonies - while "My Little Someone" is a slower, more impassioned cut destined to soundtrack tender moments.

Step Out (2:57)
Review: The brilliantly entitled 1619 Bad Ass Band covered myriad different styles from mellow sound to furious funk on their superlative and self-titled debut long player back in 1976. Two of it's standout tunes now get pulled and pressed on this red hot 7" from P-Vine, complete with a flip-back sleeve. That LP is a rare one amongst the famous TSG catalogue and first up from it is the mid-tempo dance gem 'Nothing Can Stop My Loving You' while on the flip there is the more heavy funk sound of 'Step Out' which anyone who has listened to any DJ Shadow will know he sampled.

Review: Over the years, Italian eccentrics 291out have proved tricky to pin down. While their releases are rooted in the spacey end of the jazz-funk spectrum, they also touch on film soundtracks, quirky electronica and meandering progressive rock. This time out they're operating on a Latin tinged jazz-rock tip, with crunchy guitars, fuzz-soaked horns, rubbery bass and eyes-closed electric piano motifs rising above a head-nodding groove. The band's included "Alternative Version" is noticeably wilder and more intense, with a looser beat and a greater number of mind-mangling horn solos. In terms of remixes, you'll find Italian veterans Leo Mas and Fabrice at the controls. Their A-side revision sounds a little like a jazzier take on Italian Balearic rock merchants Almunia, while their flipside "Alternative Remix" is a bounding, peak-time-ready jazz-house workout.

Iwishcan William (Full Length version) (11:30)
Iwishcan William (Lexx vocal mix) (5:56)
Iwishcan William (Nad Tyler dub Strip version) (7:12)
Review: Washington D.C's The 3 Pieces initially put this out on their own private pressing on DL Records in 1982. It is a cosmic-boogie-disco-jazz and rap jam with lashings of funk and a curious spoken-word delivery and guest spot from a school aged vocalist that lends it plenty of character. The synths are glossy and harp-like, the bass grumbles are infectious and the whole thing overflows with feel good factor. The Lexx vocal mix is like an early house track with claps straight from a Peech Boys record and the Nad Tyler dub is even more ready for the dancefloor.

It features tracks by 3TOB, an outfit originally born in 2019 by band members of Tone and earlier in the year they dropped the sultry hip-hop, soul and r&b album Trading Places. Those tracks are "My Baby' and 'Love Will Find Its Way' and neither were on the album and have been streaming only up to now. They are a timeless fusion of heart-melting harmonies and silky beats for those loved up late night sessions.

Gee How I Miss You (2:56)
Review: The 4 Jades are a mysterious soul and funk group from Ohio, who first released these two stunning tracks in 1972 under the label Cin-Town Records. Written and produced by label owner Wilbert Longmire, who also features on guitar here, he joins the likes of William L Johnson for a loving stylistic homage to the likes of James Brown and Curtis Mayfield here. Both 'Gee, How I Miss You' and 'Doon-Chang' express the sultrier and waltzier respective ends of the Jades' sound; don't let their name fool you, as they're anything but 'jaded', with the former track flaunting their lithely harmonic acapella abilities and the latter reflecting a more sexually tense atmosphere, one that hardly assumes a thing.

Hearsay (2:27)
Review: The 4 Masters recorded these tunes in the Sound Plus Studio in Philadelphia, but they have never previously been available on vinyl. They have been officially licensed courtesy of Frank Bendinelli and both the A and B-side were recorded on February 27th, 1965. 'Pretty One' is the slow dance - the sentinel soul sound with impossibly pure falsetto vocal leads and lush string sounds as well as backing harmonies to melt the heart. 'Hearsay' picks up the pace with finger clicks and horns making for something of a Northern Soul feel.

Review: Some 10 years ago 45 Trio first appeared with their silky smooth strain of live band boogie and broken beat, minting an album on Origami Productions before making a welcome comeback in 2020. Their latest 7" continues a fruitful run with Bloom Music, leading in with the lounge-ready synth-funk of 'Remind Me', with a luscious piece of Moog-esque low end which makes a nod to Lowrell's evergreen 'Mellow Mellow Right On'. 'Miles To Cross' is a looser, jazzier affair with a widescreen arrangement which features a guest spot from Calmera's Yousuke Kobayashi.

'Saudade Vem Correndo' is a new funk and soul-infused jazz sound that arrives especially for Record Store Day 2023 on limited edition 7". A Little Spice (4:15)
Review: 'Mysterious Vibes' is the latest of several new releases by piano trio 45trio for Bloom Music Japan. As always led by pianist and producer Swing-O, 45trio demonstrate here a slow-honed mastery of nighttime, quayside funk, with the titular A-side of this fresh 7" procuring a deft combo of searchlit synth and vivacious vocoder. The B's 'A Little Spice' breaks from this with a strutting walking bass and backbeat combo, harking an Afro-Brazilian piano tinge.

Am I The Same Girl (feat Momoko Suzuki & Reiko Oda From Cosa Nostra) (4:10)
Soulful Strut (Organ mix) (4:11)
Review: 45trio share their first release for Bloom Musi, this time around covering the stone-cold classic 'Am I The Same Girl', co-written by Eugene Record, of Chi-Lites fame, with Sonny Sanders, for singer Barbara Acklin. In '92, Swing Out Sister covered the album, but this latest rendition hears 45trio's Momoko Suzuki and Reiko Oda lend it a sweeter style by comparison. This dainty, vivid young soul morsel is a fine-tuned fine tune, one you'll undoubtedly want to continue humming along to long after its central, unmistakable hook - transposed up at least two octaves here - has played out. The B-side includes a special instrumental version, no less, released under the name of Young-Holt Unlimited - this one brings the hook line to an organ part, demonstrating the written song's potent and versatile instrumental repertoire.

Review: Brit-funk combo 52nd Street are undeniably best-known for their 1983 single on Factory Records, "Look Into My Eyes", which came accompanied by some killer remixes from John "Jellybean" Benitez and sailed closed to the NYC electro sound. The Manchester outfit's roots were in jazz-funk though, as this essential reissue of their 1982 debut single proves. "Look Into My Eyes" is simply superb: a warm, woozy and gently groovy affair full of attractive lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer lines and dreamy chords. If you're after some more up-tempo dancefloor pressure, check out flipside "Express" - a riotous affair rich in hammered-out Clavinet lines, jaunty lead lines and energetic percussion.

Larry Sanders - "I’m In Love" (2:43)
Review: Ace's introduces the Soul Harmony label with a thrilling discovery from Golden State Recorders. The 87th Off Broadway, hailing from Seaside, California, recorded a series of tracks in April 1972, with arrangements by Los Angeles' Rene Hall. These sessions, featuring the group's self-penned songs, remained unheard for decades. 'Instant Replay is the final track from these sessions to be released, following previous funk releases on Ace's BGP label. The group later evolved into Welfare, who recorded 'What About The Child' (under the name Gold) for the MRC label in 1977. The intricate harmony and high-quality production of 'Instant Replay' have already garnered praise on the Lowrider scene. The music of Larry Sanders has seen the soar among collectors, capturing the essence of a summer romance with his lush, harmonious sound.

Both of these super sexy killers are taken from the mega rare Bubble Gum album and it's not hard to see why it has become such a highly sought after record. The title tune is only just over two minute long but has steamy spoken word vocals with Moog funk bass. 'Rule Of Mind' is longer at over five minutes, and the way the keys shimmy into your affections and the lead sax brings the lustre is second to none. What an EP.

Akwasi Mensah, Dego, Theo Parrish - "It's Just Begun"
Review: All has been quiet at Wildheart Recordings since label founders Theo Parrish and Tony Allen inaugurated proceedings with the soulful double drop of Day Like This, which is understandable given their respective touring schedules. Out of nowhere a second release arrives and finds Wildheart looking back but still being forward thinking with a timely reappraisal of a West Coast gem from A Race Of Angels. The recording alias of Yeofi Andoh, A Race of Angels will be familiar to Gifted & Blessed fans for their Steoples work together and his fragile vocal talents is on full display with "Just Begin". Initially released as part of the ArtDontSleep Presents... From L.A. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.
