Techno
  1. 3-4-3 (original mix)
  2. 3-4-3 (Rolando mix)
  3. Delta House (original mix)
Review: As he spreads his wings and reaches out to labels beyond his own Elastic Dreams imprint, A Sagittariun too reveals more dimensions to his pleasingly old-skool rooted sound with this EP on Hype LTD. "3-4-3" comes rushing at you in a blizzard of chopped up drum breaks and romping arpeggios with a distinct Underground Resistance gone 'ardcore vibe. That makes it all the more appropriate that Rolando has been assigned the remix slot on the record, notably paring the track down to a measured simmer which says a lot about the firepower the original packs. "Delta House" gives rise to a more complex kind of techno laden with sax and off-kilter drum programming in the finest B2 tradition.

  1. Don't Hide It (7:21)
  2. Xtra Sauce (8:24)
  3. Vista (10:31)
Review: Since making his debut back in 2015, J. Albert (real name Jiovanni Nadal) has gleefully drifted between labels, making appearances on 1080p, Cult Trip and Black Opal along the way. Given this track record, it's perhaps unsurprising that Hypercolour have snapped up this on-point three-tracker. There's much to admire throughout, from the punchy, broken house rhythms, lilting deep house chords, hardcore style breakbeat fills and eyes-closed vocal samples of "Don't Hide It", to the Derrick Carter-goes-bleep analogue funk of closer "Vista". Sandwiched in between you'll find the superb "Xtra Sauce", an early Basement Jaxx style fusion of crunchy, U.S garage-influenced beats, fizzing chords and warehouse-friendly late night aesthetics.

Review: Irish tape throb enthusiast The Cyclist adds Bristol house bastions Hypercolour to his discography with this fine four-track 12", Pressing Matters, which features a remix from Pampa and Kompakt legend Robag Wruhme! The title track is a fine example of The Cyclist's warped charm, conjuring bendy bass lines, faltering breakbeats and wavy synth lines over seven delightfully heat-treated minutes. The Robag Wruhme is just as epic, sounding like a lost breakbeat artefact dug up for gleeful 21st century consumption. "Born In '92" adds plenty of pirate radio chatter into it's deep and spectral house bump, whilst Tanaya Harper's vocals lend a palpable edge to the brittle garage swing of closer "Push."

Review: It was the combined efforts of Crisis Urbana Recordings and the All Caps label that brought Guy Evans aka DJ Guy into the limelight, back in 2014. The artist was marketed as having made a series of seminal cassette recordings back in the 90s, recordings that do inarguably sound incredibly contemporary in this day and age. While this new LP for Hypercolour is made up of new recordings, DJ Guy has that rare ability of making his tracks sound timeless; "Love" or "Untitled 3", for instance, are both tunes that could have been made back in the day thanks to their noticeable analogue charm, and yet they have something fresh and forward-thinking about them. "Concentric Rhythm" is a buzzing slice of distorted techno-house that we absolutely love, but the deeper, more 'intelligent' moments such as "Don't Hold Back 95" or "Through The Galaxy 93", are what we're particularly fond of because they recall the true mysticism of UK techno. There's also a full, sixteen-minute version of the marvellous "20 '96", and two more slices of Guy signature techno. You can't miss this one..!

Review: 23 years have passed since Edward Upton first donned the DMX Krew alias, but the prolific British producer shows no signs of slowing down. Astonishingly, Strange Directions is the electro stalwart's 21st full-length excursion. Predictably, it's rather good, with Upton delivering a set that effortlessly body-pops between vocoder-laced electro workouts, melodious IDM, bass-heavy intelligent techno, gnarled Drexciyan throbbers, Artificial Intelligence style home listening fare and even a dash of muscular, tongue-in-cheek Italo-disco (the deliciously sleazy "Soft Networks"). As usual, the distinctive, off-kilter swing of original analogue hardware is present throughout, as Upton showcases his full range of talents. Recommended.

Review: DMX Krew on Hypercolour? You bet! The UK electro don serves up his trademark style for the tech-house institution who seem to be broadening their horizons: can only be a good thing! Things start off in spectacular fashion with the cute and upbeat "Spiritual Encounter" before settling into some funky and mysterious electro with "Bombay Mix". Hard Copy is reminiscent of the early Hi NRG vibes of Bobby Orlando or Gino Soccio but "Woolly Hat" and "Parallel Universes" are funky, fun loving 4/4 electro grooves that are more typical of the DMX sound. He saves the best for last though, with some darker excursions such as the high octane, Telex sounding "Computational Paradigm Shift" and the smack electro closer "Black Poppy". With electro making an obvious comeback, thank goodness we've still got this legend to show us how it's done. An outstanding effort!

Review: Having debuted on Prime Numbers last year with an EP of pleasingly dusty deep house, Mor Elian transfers to Jamie Russell's Hypercolour label. While "Drum Vortex" contains nods to these deep house roots - most notably some dreamy, stretched-out chords - it draws greater influence from the percussive world of techno, and the clandestine creepiness of the best L.I.E.S releases. Joey Anderson tips a nod to classic Detroit techno on his sparkling remix, while Markus Suckut drags the track through the dark room at Berghain, backwards. The pulsating, acid-flecked bonus cut "Basma" completes a solid package.

Review: Record Store Day Edition: The increasingly sprawling Hypercolour operation indulge in Record Store Day festivities with something rather special indeed; two tracks from the digi only archives pressed up for reappraisal by the vinyl selectors. Roman Flugel is a special kind of talent whose work should always make the cut to vinyl so it's great to see his rework of the 2012 Glimpse and Martin Dawson (RIP) production "Fat Controller" for the HypeDigi label transferred to 12". If you've been to a house club in the past two years you've probably danced to this slab of sublime, spacey, deep analogue house. On the flip Mr G dark warehouse remix of "All Ears" by Shenoda is an equally welcome sight.

Review: Gary Gritness' real name is Tim Becherand. He is a session musician who has been around for some time and has worked alongside some of the greats such as the legendary Kenny Bobien and top producers in house music like Grant Nelson, Terry Hunter, Louie Vega and many more. The Sugar Cane Chronicles Vol. 1 on London's Hypercolour was one of 2016's highlights where he explored some Underground Resistance inspired hi-tech soul jams alongside some electro-funk reminiscent of Japanese Telecom. Here for the second instalment of the series, he delivers the goods once again. Take for instance "Countin' Up With Starr" which features some razor sharp analogue arpeggios and celestial synths, dancing atop rusty vintage drum computer patterns. So convincingly that you'd think they were lost tapes from 1991. On the flip, another gem came in the form of "Pool Shark Loot" which unlike the other tracks is a lo-slung boogie jam and shows of Gary's dexterity on the keys and he tears it up on a series of slick synth solos.

Review: Improvised hardware troupe London Modular Alliance - AKA circuit-bending enthusiasts Gavin "Koova" Pykerman, Simon "Yes Effect" Lynch and Pip Williams - are best known for their off-the-cuff live performances, though they've previously delivered well-regarded releases on Applied Rhythmic Technology and Brokntoys. This surprise EP on Hypercolour is equally as impressive, with the trio laying down a quartet of angular-but-funky electro treats (think Autechre's more accessible moments). We're particularly enjoying the snappy, broken beat style hustle of "Civic Society", the Drexciya-style deep sea funk of "Lucid" and the far-out modular ambience of "Saunton", but it's all pretty darn tasty.

Deep House
  1. Daddy, What's A Rise?
  2. Time & Space
Review: This surprise EP from German house veteran LoSoul offers further proof of Hypercolour's growing maturity as a label. As you'd expect from someone of LoSoul's experience - his first single for regular home Playhouse dropped way back in 1996 - both tracks are immaculately produced, offering a warm, fuzzy, enveloping and off-kilter take on deep house. There's no sample-pack shininess or over-polished sound, just thickset grooves, immersive chords, bubbling electronics and just the right amount of dancefloor oomph. The minor key chords, shuffling rhythms, cut-up beats and intoxicated samples of "Daddy, What's A Rise" offer a hypnotic - not to mention attractive - late night feast, while "Time & Space" rolls along on a wave of delay-laden electronics, wonky bass and toasty chords.

  1. Blue Rawls
  2. Meet The Butcha
Review: Last seen excelling on The Corner, NYC techno man Phil Moffa adds Hypercolour to his prospering profile with Rogue Music, a 12" hook up with the irrepressible Seth Troxler. Whilst this may not be the most immediate of collaborative endeavours you could think of, there is still plenty to enjoy here with "Blue Rawls" a perfect balance of stripped back, bone shaking rhythm and a growing sense of textural foreboding. It's the sort of track you can lay down after a frantic bout of drums to really hypnotise the dancefloor. Complementing this, "Meet The Butcha" heads off into seven odd minutes of bugged out house territory and leaves us clamouring more from the pair.
