Body Mind Spirit EP
Cat: JMEP 023. Rel: 06 May 21
Meditation #1-2 (1:36)
Body Mind Spirit (feat Dumama) (7:05)
Saturn Return (6:37)
Elevation #1-2 (2:51)
Phoenix Rising (5:07)
Nuit Des To'eres (8:18)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

Acronym - "Nabu"
JC - "Chenox"
Zadig - "Panic"
Review: Ah yes, The Tresor Demo line...what could be a better surprise on a Thursday? Whether you're into it or not, the German institution is a bloody techno power-house and recent released by the Zenker Brothers have been truly killer. This time, Northern Electronics man, Acronym steps up for a rattling, shape-shifting chest-burster on "Nabu" and tracks from newbies JC and Zadig both detonate splinter-like floor dynamite. It's heavy, be warned.

The Advent - "Witches Spell" (5:45)
The Advent - "Live 98 Tour" (5:07)
The Advent & Zein - "Same 4" (4:46)
Review: Coyu's Barcelona-based Suara label continues to push the thresholds of hard techno, with this new one by legend Cisco Ferreira under his reknowned The Advent moniker. Brace yourself for The Movement EP, featuring heavy duty sonic artillery that must be handled with extreme caution. From the brutalist dystopian slammer "Witches Spell" to the unrelenting peak time fury of "Live 98 Tour" which is reminiscent of timeless classics like "Bad Boy", to the Detroit style breakneck electro funk of "Same 4" which is a collaboration with his son Zein. Ferreira proves yet again that even after 30 years in the game, he is still miles ahead of the rest - respect!

Carl Finlow - "Optogenetic" (7:17)
Detroit's Filthiest - "Werewolf" (5:21)
Modulator AKA Freddie Fresh - "Promars" (5:27)
Review: EPM20 Ep2 goes off on an electro tangent here. On this one, we have veteran producer Cisco Ferreira aka The Advent teaming up with his son Zein on the ferocious electro dystopia of "Strangeform" and as if that was not enough, another legend, the one and only Carl Finlow appears next with the abstract, cybernetic beats of "Optogenetic". Over on the flip, we have someone by the name of Detroit's Filthiest (quite an accolade!) who is in fact Motor City stalwart Julian Shamou (Motor City Electro Company) known for his work as 313 Bass Mechanics or Digitek, and longstanding hero of the Midwest Freddie Fresh should need no introduction; his contribution here under the Modulator alias is the deep mind IDM journey "Promars".

Outta Control
Cat: CLUSTER 80. Rel: 15 Sep 06
AP - "Outta Control"
Zoid - "Inner Control"
Review: AP and Zoid from the Fat Collective have been gaining an excellent reputation from the underground for their seminal Kick The Drum label and are now the new kids on the block in the free party techno movement. Cluster is the label from the legendary Liberator DJ Crew and has gained a solid fan base around the world and defined the sound of London squat party techno. Cluster is still one of the biggest techno labels out there with massive support from France, Spain and Germany. Artists that have appeared on Cluster includes Chris Liberator, Dave The Drummer, Guy Mcaffer, Lenny Dee, Sandy Warez, KD Smith, Drumcomplex Audio and Mark. Cluster scored a ground breaking hit with "Mosquito's" (Dave The Drummer and Guy Mcaffer). The track had won an army of new fans from the hard dance world including Ann Savage and Judge Jules.

Raffaele Attanasio - "Straight Walking"
Markantonio - "No Matter"
Mattia Trani - "Dogtown"
ZIPPO - "Sparkas"
Manuel Di Martino - "Barona"
MUTE8 - "Kokoro"
Review: This bumper 12" covers plenty of thrilling techno ground in a variety of different ways. Raffaele Attanasio goes for the jugular from the off with steely, tightly packed drums and synth surges that electrify the groove. Markantonio brings layers of wailing diva emotion to his 90s-sounding drum funk and Mattia Trani offers the unrelenting warehouse density of 'Dogtown'. Elsewhere there are more lithe and funky cuts from ZIPPO and a synth-washed roller from MUTE8. All of these are high-impact sounds for the peak time.

Uff (original)
Review: Baby Ford and Zip need little introduction and debut on Trelik as "BFZ" featuring co-conspiritor Thomas Melchior. The trio originally appeared on the 1999 "Perlondon" 12" for Perlon with Ford and Zip re-uniting for the "Glidin' Along The Riverbed" release then 2010's "Clean Hands" on PAL SL. Thomas Melchior recently appearing on [a:rpia:r] and his own Aspect Music kicks off the 12" with a floor friendly up-beat 9 minute "Melchior Productions LTD" edit remix of "Uff". An "Uffapella" closes the A-side featuring abstract sound design and textured vocals. Side-B's "So They Say" creates a feeling of space and unhurried rhythmatics whilst the title track "Uff" combines deep instrumentals, chord and haunting vox with subtle bass and modulating kick. Recorded in London and Berlin. Mastered at D & M.

Mike Clark - "Nu Day"
Zhao-Ski - "Ova The Limit"
Terrence Parker - "Lonely World"
Brian Harden - "String Vibe"
Sean Deason - "Beautiful 1"
Review: D3 Recordings offshoot D3 Elements is only three releases deep, but already their releases are reaching "must check" status. Following their recent release of a superb EP from US deep house veteran Brian Harden, the Paris-based imprint offers up something a little different - an EP of gorgeously deep and melodic flavours that joins the dots between head-nodding instrumental hip-hop and floor-friendly 4/4 fare. There are plenty of surprises, too, including techno stalwart Terrence Parker delivering a flute-heavy downtempo head-nodder, some gorgeous beatdown from Detroiter Mike Clark, and a thrillingly string-laden chunk of deep house bliss from the aforementioned Harden. Recommended.

Review: Those with a deep knowledge of electro and techno will be salivating at the prospect of More Than A Machine: Part 1, an EP that boasts cuts from such legends of the scene as Sterac Electronics, The Advent and Christian Smith. All deliver the goods, of course, as does rising star Client 03, whose EP-opening 'Regression Container' brilliantly flips between shimmering, deep space ambient and warming, tactile electro dreaminess. Those looking for more rugged and robust club fare should check Sterac Electronics 'Reinstated', with its' out-there lead lines and machine-gun bass, and the sleazy, up-tempo futurism of the Adveny and Zein Ferreira's 'Seven'. Cabanelas - "Sambu Y Los Morsas" (6:17)
Z@p - "Yeartail" (6:10)
Justin Drake & Quinn Whalley - "Slack-Strobe" (7:55)
Review: The Alt label hits its second record with a sterling cast of wayward techno bods in tow. Things fire up in a tough and trippy manner as Delta wrings all kinds of tricky noises out of his gear and keeps the bass brooding in the low end, but hold tight for a perfectly 90s chord progression in that pad line. Cabanelas has a bleepy mission on 'Sambu Y Los Morsas' which flits between creepy passages of tension and acid tweaking drops. Z@p keeps things melancholic while adhering to the record's over-arching old-skoool outboard vibe, and then Justin Drake and Quinn Whalley sign the record off with a slice of proto trance for the deepest of 90s-tinted dancefloor reveries.

Zenker Brothers - "Namuan" (6:15)
Review: With the label's 50th and final release imminent, Modeselektor has decided to ramp up the pressure on 50 Weapons' last few EPs. Here, they turn to German techno royalty Marcel Dettmann, and fast rising Ilian Tape founders The Zenker Brothers. Dettmann kicks things off with "Activator" - a dark, intoxicating and smoky DJ tool built around shuffling, broken techno rhythms. As for the Zenker Brothers, their "Namuan" mines the world of 1990s loop techno for inspiration, with sweaty handclaps, fizzing electronics and clandestine aural textures riding a bouncy, chunk and formidably bass-heavy groove.

This outing on WANIA is a special release with alternative mixes and non-album tracks from the upcoming WANIA mk1 double album. 'Dubquartz' opens up with rattling dub techno, 'Dub State Looped' is a slow motion and heavyweight dub with rusty chords and then comes a seizes of loose for adventurous DJ fun such as the scratchy vocal of 'My Spirit Is Looped' and frosted hi-hats of 'Hats Loop 1'. '1st Wave Fusion' is the standout with its cinematic synths and widescreen grooves.

Review: Ninja Tune aren't the only wax shuriken-touting dance gesticulators on the block. Lumbago Records are their reissuing rivals; hailing from France, this anonymous pair focus on rereleasing long-lost dance cuts from the crates, new and old, compiling them into short EPs. Scratchy electro and breaks bits from EFX and Samix time travel all the way from 1991 ('Technique Amiga' sounds like it's lifted straight from an early Lara Croft soundtrack), and are reconciled with two tracks made in the last 5 years - and one bang in between from 2001, The Ruffneck's 'Phase Shift'. An impressive exercise in cross-generation reconciliation. Electro will never die!

Review: The second Murder Records EP is another uncompromising collection of brutalist techno. The Tbilisian label enlists Fractions & Zanias to open up with a stormy flurry of synths and frosted drums then Alessandro Adriani layers up more mechanical drums that demand you march while the brine frying synths melt your mind up top. Years of Denial then looks to EBM for its inspiration on 'Reverie' with deadpan vocals and haunting cold wave synths. This is caustic and coruscated stuff from start to finish that is best heard loud, in a super blackened and raw space.

They come from deep within the vaults on some old DATs as unearthed by Gosub and he opens things up with the icy and glistening electro fizzer, "Static Stabs." He also offers up "Love Balls", which is a more pensive and spacious deep electro cut with lush chords draped over slippery beats. Review: For more than a decade Harthouse has been one of the most influential trademarks within the Techno scene. The releases during the 1990s have been landmarks, pioneering the forefront in sound innovation, being a role model for countless artists and labels. Harthouse acts achieved world fame and climbed into the international charts. Artists like Sven Vaeth, Hardfloor, Alter Ego, Resistance D. or Der Dritte Raum became synonymous for the sound of Harthouse. In other words: Harthouse has a glamorous past, a musical heritage, a name that always stood for constant progress and high quality - two keywords that are becoming more and more important these days. But Harthouse is not only one of the biggest myths in the encyclopaedia of electronic music. After some time the fog has risen and the legend is back with producers like Zoo Brazil, Alexi Delano or Gui Boratto, and with overwhelming success. So it is no surprise that Harthouse is presenting a unique various artists compilation - which is available as a Triple Vinyl package. And it wouldn't be Harthouse if the track selection wasn't extraordinary. Consequently only handpicked artists found their way on this supernova sound, artists who are all considered as innovative, pioneering and creative representatives of their guild. So we are more than proud to present you the outstanding artists like Hardfloor, Der Dritte Raum (two Harthouse legends), Özgür Can, Groove Rebels, Extrawelt, Zoo Brazil, Swedish Techno pioneer Joel Mull, electro infant terrible Terence Fixmer, Alexi Delano (AD Remix), John Dahlbäck. All these artists are presenting their very own sound, which is far away from monotony - their sound is fresh, tight, groundbreaking and shaping our musical landscape in a new and exciting way! The bandwidth is reaching from fragile minimal sound structures over mind burning acid flavoured tracks with hypnotic melodies to massive electro bombs with freaked out basslines - altogether proving how exciting planet Electronica can be, if you follow the right artists on their mission!

Pulse One - "Choices" (5:46)
Zedje - "Black Horses" (6:00)
Auditory Response - "Shake" (5:09)
Review: Although the Krill Music posse runs its operations from Berlin's underbelly, the imprint is very much waving the flag for Argentina's present yet fledgling techno scene. They've been going solidly since 2011, and have had the pleasure of hosting artists such as AnD, Jonas Kopp, Szare, and many others on their 12" discs. We should note that they are a vinyl-only affair. Over recent months, they've been focussing on their Habitat series, where they've hosted the likes of Matrixxman, Ilario Alicante and Stanislav Tolkachev, among others, on a highly stylised and carefully art directed series of EPs. This is the sixth instalment of the series, starring a selection of lesser known techno producers: He/At launches an outright techno missile through "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd", "Choices" by Pulse One is a straight-up slice of industrial hammering, Zedje's "Black Horses" bangs its analogue drums to a menacing groove, and Auditory Response goes down a more sleek, acid-laden path that reminds us of Steve Poindexter's material from the 90s.

Innershades brings emotive 90s swoon and peppy acid to the A side, before Two Phase U slips in a little uptempo robo-disco sauce and a feisty jack track. Otis takes things in the direction of wiggy proto-trance and bleep techno, and then Zots finishes up with freaky synth work dripping with mischievous personality. This is a set of tracks that demands to be noticed - don't sleep.

Review: White Scar's goal is to release EPs that feature a club ready track from four various artists on each. On the first side, Jucid's 'Essential To Our Life' is a futuristic and energetic synth heavy techno track that is sure to keep the crowd pumped up. Zuul's 'Are You Neutralised?' adds a bit of mysteriousness and drama to this sci-fi novel soundtrack. For the second side, Desiree Falessi's 'Electro Samurai' offers a dramatic 80s tinged techno sound complete with the perfect amount of tech while Boheme's 'Spiral' wraps up the EP with another science fiction track that adds some fun to the sound. Overall, four superb examples of retro sounding techno with a bit of a trance and electro feel within.

Towering over the rave with an august majesty, we kick off with Kaspar's Rocky-sampling 'Sunshine & Rainbows', which overloads the dance with extra-layered sixteenth progressions and infra-textured stabs. This four-track EP compilation - and there are many more where it came from - reinforces the most hardened cores of the German underground, whether they manifest as mystic darkside trance (Zajon's 'Fierce Pain') or verging-on-hardstyle apocalypses (Kaspar's 'Since 94').

Polyrhythmic Series #1
Cat: SVS 001. Rel: 26 Jul 13
Gunther Lause - "Transit"
Zaquoir - "Wokule"
Larkin & The Sky - "Polygon"
Bartellow - "Peruno"
Lukas Rabe - "Wintervirus"
Review: The first release from the SVS label is a dubby, industrial and quirky offering. Polyrhythmic Series #1 opens with a Basic Channel inspired "Transit" by Gunther Lause, a track also suitable for the likes of Fear Of Flying or Millions Of Moments imprints. The EP's quirkiness comes via the darkly bass and jazz flickered beats of Zaquoir's "Wokule", while Larkin & The Sky look to tribalisms and industrial techno for their track "Polygon". Stripped techno laced with frazzled electro comes in Bartellow's "Peruno", leaving Lukas Rabe to end this five artist split release with a shuffly, broken beat and hip hop themed "Wintervirus".

Lior - "Dancehall Vibes" (5:53)
Chris Liberator & Sam Dfl - "Psychedelic Drug" (feat Tab K) (7:10)
Zyco - "Jetpack Pilot" (7:03)
Acid Chochi - "Work It, Girl!" (7:26)
Review: Colombian artist Lior has the blessing of the Stay Up Forever crew who are supporting the development of his 76B label, but if you were expecting straight-up free-party acid techno on this record think again. Lior and Tab K team up for the resoundingly cheeky 'Dancehall Vibes', which plays around with brass stabs strapped to uptempo techno with a result which is surprisingly chirpy. Chris Liberator and Sam Dfl have a more typically rave-ready approach on 'Psychedelic Drig', while Zyco makes the right moves for an industrial-strength slammer before Acid Chochi rounds the EP off with a synapse-frying slice of peak time wormhole business.

Mark Reeve - "Run Back" (Remake) (6:38)
Zimmz - "Qualia" (6:21)
Review: Adam Beyer's esteemed Drumcode resurfaces this week with the next installment in the A Sides series. We're already up to Vol 11's sixth part, and this one seriously means business. Take for instance Hungarian techno hero Jay Lumen's 'Astronaut' featuring the pummelling cyclicality of its muscular bassline that's reinforced by truly visceral kicks. Elsewhere, Dutchman LAAT (Elevate/Tronic) is sure to have you reaching for the lasers on the steely and acid-inflected power on 'Call Of The Tribes' while the enigmatic Zimmz will properly elevate you to maximum euphoria on the trance-influenced energy of 'Qualia'.

Zimmz - "Tension" (6:23)
Review: The mighty Drumcode label keeps on serving up those business beats with this 10th volume of A-Sides. The clue is in the title really - a collection of big hitting techno tunes designed for large plus at peak time. Jay Lumen kicks off with the hammering kicks and made synth melodies of 'Galactic Rainbow', which is sure to make any floor march. Thomas Schumacher & Caitlin then come together for the machine gun synths of 'Qadash' and its sleek, rolling drums, and completing the trio is Zimmz with the deeper, more dark and atmospheric 'Tension' which does exactly what it says on the tin.

Anomalia Magnetica Del Atlantico Sur EP
Apologias Del Futuro (6:46)
Ars Magma (6:15)
Fonky (6:51)
Abrazo De Oso (7:11)
Review: Just like the label's well-regarded debut last summer, this second salvo from Amorfo is a group effort. What Luis Malon, Bruno Di Paolo, Z@p, Digregorius and Guillermo Miranda collectively served up is impressive, with four varied cuts jostling for dancefloor domination. Our highlight is probably opener "Apologias Del Futuro", a pleasingly heavy and melodious fusion of bumpin' beats, heavy sub bass, Detroit Techno chords, wiggling acid lines and funk-fuelled synth solos. There's plenty to admire elsewhere across the EP too, from the deep, angular and intergalactic electro-acid swing of "Ars Magma", to the psychedelic electronics, rumbling analogue bass and off-kilter beats of "Abrazo De Oso".

Review: Chris Liberator's experimental techno label Maximum/Minimum forms part of the Stay Up Forever Collective umbrella, which has been going for a heck of a long time (since 1995-ish), charting untouched terrains of teratological UK hardcore techno. An offshoot imprint dedicated to the "creative corruptions" of the Stay Up Forever crew, Liberator and co. would originally release these ones without catalogue numbers, that is until the market beseeched them to behave more conventionally. Now, well past their 65th V/A release, comes their latest, a decapitatory pummeller fronted by Sonico's 'Did You Say Acid?' and Zyco Seon's 'Citric Frequencies'.

Latress - "Perseverance" (7:00)
Review: On 'WITNESS 06', One Eye Witness showcases modern South American acid house presenting four new tracks by Uruguayan producers. Each is a classic example of modern house influenced by classic EBM and early 90s European trance. The release kicks off with 'Modus Operandi' by Molen & Nahuel on which EBM influenced bass lines are combined with break samples. Michelle follows with the tense 'Last Cello' as paranoid synths and spasmodic percussion cuts in & out. Barcelona based Z@p's 'Ignorance' blends spooky synths and acid lines sounding like lost Italian proto-trance. Latress closes the release with 'Perseverance', another fine acid track.

Review: Illegal Alien goes big with a four track various artists EP that kicks off with none other than Spanish techno legend Oscar Mulero. His 'Figures Of Light' is a brilliantly well lit techno trip with psychedelic synths and pads all spiralling and warping around one another to great effect. Adriana Lopez then offers the intense and linear techno thrills of 'Espacio Infinito' and Zadig's 'Crystal Boy' then gets more unhinged with some unsettling synths and broken beats that are in freewill through space. Ricardo Garduno's 'Trust In Dirt' is a deep, dark and heady closer on this most fresh of techno EPs.

VNZO - "Relax Ya Self" (8:18)
NMSS & JJuan - "Keep Groovin'" (7:17)
Zolaa - "Fao-Mao" (6:36)
Review: Happily, Neo Violence's third label sampler contains some real gems. It begins with Niro's "Nazca", a distinctively spacey affair that brings together echoing, dub techno style synthesizer motifs, shuffling tech-house drums and chords seemingly beamed down from another galaxy. VNZO's woozy "Relax Yourself" continues the fusion vibe (think ultra-deep Motor City techno mixed with dusty deep house), before NMSS and Jjuan pepper a cowbell-laden broken house groove with swirling chords and late '80s hip-house vocal samples. Another rock solid EP is drawn to a close via the rubbery, post-electro rhythms, darting bass and dreamy pads of Zolaa's standout "Fao-Mao".

Review: Total Loss is the latest compilation series from Flatlife Records, and here the label welcome the second iteration in the series, lending hard acid techno a European edge, almost with the sample-cut edge of French house. Ear-erodingly acidic, our favourite bits are Zyco' 'Anarko 303' and Acid Mutant's 'The Shit Goes Up', two tunes which scour the deeper plungings of the classic acid stab, finding many more uses for said dance music archetype than we would have expected.

Drivetrain - "This Is Detroit" (Rolando remix) (6:40)
Zadig - "Maniac Manson" (Rolando remix) (6:33)
Malvito - "Origin" (Rolando remix) (6:51)
Review: Pumping new Syncrophone remixes from producer Rolando, who helps the label celebrate its 60th outing with a fresh crock of remixes of star releases from its back catalogue. Including versions of Derrick Thompson, Zadig and Malvito, this collection brings a powerful Detroit-inspired sound to a cutting-edge modern feel, not getting too bogged down in tradition and yet keeping quite true to the raw and unvarnished finish incipient of the early motorised sound. Best here has to be the B2, which heads in a broken direction, splitting rhythmic hairs with auto-somatic woodblock strikes and deep pads.

Zemi17 - "Rangda" (Patrick Russell remix) (6:22)
Review: Best-known for his extended DJ sets at Detroit parties like No Way Back, Patrick Russell steps into the studio to deliver this remix EP. It's clear that Russell has brought his years of experience behind the decks to this task. He turns Clay Wilson's "E4" into a blissed out, grey noise-led down tempo track, while his take on Romans' "Coptos" sees him go for the dance floor jugular with a dense, percussive rhythm shot through with insistent acid bleeps. Best of all though is his take on Zemi17's "Rangda". Its beautiful melodies and chiming rhythm makes for a deep, seductive track that'll work on more discerning dance floors.

Review: Pi Electronics bring four classy artists together on this new 12". It marks the start of the Limitation series and opens with the deft, moody broken beat techno and unsettling synth ambience of Sam KDC's 'Dominion.' Interviews then ups the intensity with the frosty and rusty loops of 'Crawler' which lurches back and forth with real menace, and Zevla's 'Yours Is Mine' then keeps the pressure on with more tight drum loops, lashing of synth static, corrugated low ends and general dystopian vibes. Slave To Society's 'Biosphere' is the brutalist broken techno banger to close down with.

Review: Fantastic Twins continue to explore intriguing corners of acid with a third volume of their snappily titled Microdosing label series, following ace contributions thus far from the likes of Smagghe & Cross, Naum Gabo, Gilb'r and Oceanic. This time around Cooper Saver brings arpeggios to die for, Borusiade goes slow and low with a chuggy trip-out, Zillas On Acid builds up a stiff drum jack dripping with tension and Scott Fraser skips off into a frankly stunning curveball of fast-ticking drum machine patter and illustrious synth work. Review: The Furious Beats EP is a compilation of five high-energy techno tracks from various artists. The EP opens with Seigg's 'Furious Loop', a driving house track with a relentless beat and soaring energy. Zisko's 'Amnesia' is a more percussive affair, with a hard-hitting kick drum and wicked fast groove. Vromo's 'Burn Up' is a galloping burner with a catchy vocal hook with no let up. Review: Since launching last year, the Opia label has yet to put a foot wrong, serving up two must-have 12" singles full of quality cuts from rising stars and scene stalwarts. The label's latest compilation style offering is equally as good. TC80 has the honour of kicking things off via the bubbly acid lines, stomping beats and gentle synth melodies of "Exile", before Abstract Tune joyously joins the dots between bleep techno and dreamy deep house on the rich positivity of "1996 Shoots". Audri's "Acid Rain" is a raw and intense jack-track, while Omar's "Techno Victims" a bustling, minor key electro box jam. Rounding things off is Z@p, whose excellent "Different Ways" sits somewhere between early Motor City Techno and 1990s British tech-house.

The fourth release on the Leeds-based label is a split affair which kicks off with the intriguing pst-trance meets UK bass flex of Toke's 'Random Action'. Nico Lampariello taps into an electro framework while keeping some of those freaky synths on hand for the trance-y vibe hanging over the label.
