Read Round City EP
Cat: STSLJN 433LP. Rel: 18 Sep 24
Celestial (6:47)
Read Wrong (8:24)
Round Echoes (4:46)
Review: DJ Plead & rRoxymore make for a fascinating duo and take aim squarely at the floor on this new outing, Read Round City, for Smalltown Supersound. Opener 'Celestial' is a loose-limbed rhythmic jumble with hand claps, trippy xylophone patterns and deep bass that lulls you into a trance while 'Read Wrong' is a more reggaeton-inspired sound with snappy snares and warped synth sounds. It's gluey and gloopy and subtly colourful. 'Round Echoes' is a third and final cross blend of techno, dub and house that picks up the pace and heads off into the cosmos but retains an organic feel thanks to the marvellous wet hand claps.

'Ant Bangos X' hears four tracks that reflect the foursome's combined tastes in electronic music, centring on a slower-paced experimentations and bustling, bright oddballs.

Surdinia
Meccanica
Review: Having previously popped up on ESP Institute, Juan Ramos teams up with Trent to form Greenvision, making their first appearance on the home of freshly squeezed discoid deviance, Cocktail D'Amore. "Surdinia" takes over the A side with a bombastic array of peak time devices in its utility belt, from bubbling acid tweaks to gluttonous monosynth leads and a chunky set of drums. "Meccanica" is no slouch either, laying down thick slabs of synthesized grease in pursuit of a different kind of party track. This is unusual, distinctive club music for those who want the crowd to stop and pay attention.

Forbidden Mind (7:18)
Nawce Blizzard (6:13)
Review: Vivod label boss Ali Renault pays tribute to his late friend Peter Mangalore of Human Shield on this moody new EP of twisted electronics. 'Northdown Acid' opens up in downbeat fashion, with glass Italo melodies and busted bass on a rugged groove. 'Imminent Salad' picks its head up to ride a chunky, organic house beat with glistening synths and 'Peter Summoning' is misty and pensive ambient interlude. 'Forbidden Mind' drags its heels to sombre effect, with splashes of cymbal and heavy finger clicks heightening the melancholy. 'Nawce Blizzard' rounds out the EP on a sense of hope and optimism.

Review: This time the vibe is very dubby while the general characteristics of the R&S soundscape remain constant. The use of ultra short vocal fragments to build a typical R&S ambient atmosphere is a novelty and gives 'Aground' its specialty.

Review: The R&S label has many similarities to the legendary Basic Channel label. Although the vibe isn't 'that technoid' anymore, an astonishing range of tracks is presented here. Every 12" so far stands for itself. 'Roll Off' is a deep shaped and pulsating ambient tune in two parts with a unique sound scape of organic chords and coloured noises.

Review: The groove of R&S won't stop. Every 12" seems to go on where the predecessor stopped. What one keeps on riding this train is the ever refreshing sound scape of every new release with its echoes of the processing 12"s. A continuous self re-invention is going on with a good portion of accidental mutations in the sound sphere.

Preguntas (4:21)
Review: Highly curious, difficult-to-pin-down techno/Italo-ish stuff from Prince Of Takicardia and Rifeno, who here jointly assist Backward Futura in its mission to explore the sounds of 1980s and 1990s through the lens of the new Millennium. We find this aim to be something of red herring, since these tracks sound almost entirely new in their composition, and not necessarily of those times, not least since they were made in the 2020s; while taking obvious cues from those eras, the likes of 'Arte Del Sexo' and 'La Casa Del Ritmo' flesh enough out of their respective influences to sound untied from them. Through cinematic breaks and tropical bleep, Rifeno and the Prince portray their wild but no less at easse imaginations, bringing the sunned and stressless feel of the Balearic Isles to the darker worlds of EBM and industrial, making for a complex sonic flavour.

Review: Rising Sun Psyche aka Berlin's hugely prolific but somehow rather lowkey Steffen Laschinski hits an amazingly bittersweet spot on his latest offering. It combines post-rave ambient, breakbeats, IDM and deep house into a real trip. "The River Experiment II" is a dreamy opener with gorgeous synths while "Back Home" is backlit with a celestial glow of melody and spoken word snippets that add to the reverie. There's gentle minimalism in "The River Experiment I" and followed by punchy and emotive number "Feel What I Feel" amongst many other highlights.

Review: The Paper Cuts label has been doing a fine job in putting out head-tripping club and chill-out styles for a fair stretch now and following the Ivy mixtape released earlier this year they're back with this outstanding split release from Roza Terenzi and Furious Frank. Terenzi takes the A-side with her trademark line in electro-minded machine funk rhythms powering gorgeous back room moods, keeping the mix dubby and with plenty of ambient sparkle on top of the punchy drums. There's even space for a little d&b trippiness on 'Total Recall', which also features Noff. Furious Frank gets busy on the flip with 'Splash', a blissed out beatdowns with more than a little Balearic magic in its bones, while 'Moss Rock' turns the heat up for a distinctly 90s slice of acid trance. 'Dripp' seals the deal with another low slung roller from the chill-out room of your dreams.

Review: Juan Rico, who also known as Reeko and Architectural, presents Urmah, his debut LP at the eye-watering pace of 170 BPM for Samurai Music. Expanding on his two previous EPs with the label, Reeko has become essential to its sonic identity and Urmah embodies this synergy with the label by both its and his artistic boundaries. Across the record, Reeko dives deeper into hypnotic grooves and layers lush textures and subtle breakbeats into an entrancing and meditative work. The producer's deft touch for blending techno's intensity with gentle psychedelia shines through as he demonstrates a mastery of new tempos and evolving sonic landscapes.

Review: Throughout the past few years, there's been a trend of producers in and around the deep techno scene, upping (or downing) tempo and producing tracks heavily influenced by drum & bass. Having previously released experiments from techno royalty Donato Dozzy, Mike Parker & Brendon Moeller, Samurai Music now release Urmah, the first full LP solely focused on this sound by legendary Spanish producer Juan Rico aka Reeko/Architectural. He's explored this sound before, having previously released 2 excellent EPs on Samurai. 'Urmah 1' is a halftime slow burner with whispering vocals throughout. 'Urmah 2' introduces breaks that float in halfway through the track creating a feeling of depth. 'Umrah 3' is a loopy percussive workout that sounds like a far off ritual in an abandoned forest. 'Umrah 4' is the heaviest cut on the LP, with bass stabs reminiscent of the minimal drum & bass sounds of Ruffhouse, Pessimist and the UVB-76 crew. 'Umrah 5' is another fine percussive workout and the LP closes with 'Umrah 6', a nice bit of spacey, aquatic ambient.Recommended for fans of ASC's Auxiliary label, Sam KDC and Spazio Disponibile's more leftfield releases.

Review: Eternally prolific Wighnomy Brother Robag Wruhme is back with another album of his otherworldly, achingly delicate minimal tech house from way out in East Germany. Wruhme's music has always stood to the side of the standardised scene, and so it goes on this new one for Tulpa Ovi which passes through a variety of shades of 4/4 without ever sounding like anything else. Sometimes the composition his fragile and beautiful, elsewhere there's a looming creepiness pitched squarely at the night. Wruhme remains gifted in the art of embedding his music with the richest of feelings and they come through in abundance across these eight new pieces.

Review: Fences is the long awaited new album from Dial poster boy John Roberts, arriving three years after the Ohio born producer's hugely accomplished and widely lauded debut LP, Glass Eights. In the period between albums Roberts has busied himself with a smattering of remixes and the odd 12", though his primary concern outside of touring has been co-editing The Travel Almanac, a high end magazine exploring "travelling and temporary habitation for an increasingly sophisticated and mobilized generation of travellers". Not your typical techno producer then. The ten tracks that form Fences were conceived and recorded during Roberts' worldwide travels, and later sequenced and mixed in NYC and offer a further refinement on the combination of sound design, sample research and contemporary club music that characterised last year's Paper Frames 12".

Burn Down Babylon (feat Jack Russell & Sonuga) (8:34)
Review: Dublin-based artist Rustal is Peter Sweeney and he has a deep sound that he now brings to New York's renowned BlackCat label. Three of these originals are recorded in one-take performances at BlackCat HQ in the summer of 2024 and one is a dub reggae jam made in collaboration with label boss Jack Russell and Sonuga. 'Angel Of Light' is a widescreen dub techno opener with fuzzy, fizzy synths ripping out to infinity over dynamic drums. 'Flower Brick' is more intense with the oversized hi-hat ringlets and 'Ukiyo' is minimal and sparse in its drums and pads but soon locks you in. 'Burn Down Babylon' is a late-night stoner soundtrack for full mental immersion.

It is a second album that goes deep into a wider sphere of sound than the first and so is full of surprises. There are plenty of gloomy and dark cuts like the broken beats and shards of melody on 'Welltron' as well as sparse industrial ambient like 'Black Goo' and mysterious cosmic sound worlds depicted on 'Clarion'. The gorgeous closer 'Triskaideka' brings classical charm with musicians Angelina Delgado on violin and Alexandra Ivanova on viola. A superb collection.
