Dark Acid III
Cat: CDR-12-003. Rel: 12 Oct 13
IBM - "Sexually Broken"
Tzu Sing - "Teeth"
TWINS - "Mind Out Of Reach"
Tract - "Light In Extension"
Review: The third edition of Clan Destine Trax's Dark Acid series arrives offering another mixture of established names and newcomers as well as retaining the gleefully nihilistic sonics of previous transmissions. The legendary Jamal Moss is the headline draw here and "Sexually Broken (Instrumental Version)" finds the Mathematics boss adopting the rarely used Insane Black Man alias and sounds like the remnants of "Clear" by Cybotron mangled beyond recognition and force-fed through a battered old 303 on the cusp of full-on malfunction. Tzu Sing's "Teeth" will please fans of the recent Charles Manier LP whilst Matt Weiner's TWINS project feels like a doped up D'Marc Cantu. Finally Clan Destine/ Dark Acid regular Ela Orleans unveils her Tract project with "Light In Extension" which is perhaps the track truest to this series' title.

Echoic (4:33)
Autophasic (3:36)
Gestalt (6:32)
Street Flare (3:57)
Grid (6:33)
Review: Joey Anderson, Madteo, Nuel, Innerspace Halflife and Even Tuell; all names to have graced Latency. The Mura Oka project from Latency co-founder Sidney Gerard and Louis Vial (Ezzaid) stood tall alongside those names, so do you expect any less from Australian producer Kane Ikin? No! Having just graced Type - John Twells & Stefan Lewandowski taste-making label - Ikin is a producer making music worth talking about, let's just call in undefinable. This Basalt Crush EP sways between the forlorn ambient and tribal haunt of Blackest Ever Black ("Echoic" and "Autophasic") to the scatter beats of Samurai Horo character Ena ("Grid"). With some heavy, slowed down and instrumental post-punk on "Gestalt" and to the luminous glow of "Street Flare", this record is another pearl from Latency.

Jealous God (Kerri LeBon mix - CD)
Review: The Jealous God label returns and it's a Gallic affair as Lyon-based hardware mangler In Aeternam Vale offers up a trio of productions that demonstrate how under rated a producer Laurent Prot is. You will probably know In Aeternam Vale from the various archival releases issued by Minimal Wave over the past few years, but the music contained on this clear dark blue 12" is of a more recent vintage. It's also superb, with lead track "V8" one of Prot's trademark extended productions that expertly builds up a gripping sense of hissing, brooding atmosphere - the usage of delay as the final third approaches is just immense. On the flip, both "62,54hz" and "808TS" are worthy of Sandwell District in their pomp and be sure to check the accompanying mix CD. Put together by Redlight SF's Kerri Le Bon, it weaves expertly from Whitehouse to Cosey Fanni Tutti via everything from Pulp, The Cabs and Silent Servant.

Need Of Angels (8:48)
Sleight Of Hand (5:23)
A Search Of New Realities (6:39)
Review: Having recently released Not Waving's industrial-influenced Animals LP, Powell and Jaime Williams' Diagonal imprint has clearly developed a taste for dystopian, post-industrial noise. In The Mouth Of The Wolf's eponymous debut brings together two notable flag-bearers for the darker side of electronic music, Berlin's Ancient Methods and Gordon "Cindytalk" Sharp. All three tracks are undeniably weighty, with angry, guitar-laden opener "Need Of Angels" - all clanking percussion hits, droning electronics and "up yours" attitude - coming on like the aural equivalent of a violent punch to the guts. There's a little more of a Microphonies-era Cabaret Voltaire feel about "Sleight Of Hand", while "A Search of New Realities" is refreshingly paranoid and claustrophobic.

Review: LA Club Resource's Innsyter helps carry Contort Yourself into this new realm of dedicated solo releases from contemporary artists (their previous form was to split releases between archival and new tracks). The snarling, industrial palette is much the same, and the years of origin are as ambiguous here as they've ever been on the label, making Innsyter the perfect addition to the catalogue. From acid-dipped synth pop to nightmarish wave contortions, this record is certainly not for the faint of heart, but if you already love the dark and deadly world of Contort Yourself then this brilliantly-realised, consistently inventive record can't fail to hit the spot.

Industrial Model (6:29)
The ELKA Experiment (5:39)
Remodel (5:29)
Elements & Space (5:33)
Review: Veteran electro-oddities producer Intergalactic Gary, hailing from The Hague, offers up four new sonic prototypes for his latest eureka-moment-in-sound, 'Industrial Model'. Like playful blueprints for some godforsaken sonic Von Neumann machine, tracks like 'Elements & Space' and 'The ELKA Experiment' combine emotion and surrealism with such force and skill that it quite convincingly recalls the human feeling of panic as an analog-machinic-army takes on a mind of its own. Our fave is the janky-ambient cut 'Remodel', which proves said sonic army has the capacity to shapeshift on the nanoparticular level. Freaky!

Whatever Makes You Feel Safe
Cat: YER 027. Rel: 25 Oct 17
Collage (3:25)
Never Release The Tension (5:44)
Ten Years (10:06)
Review: Whatever Makes You Feel Safe is a collaboration between Canadian producer and singer Marie Davidson and Berlin based Ukrainian sound designer Invisible Church. They met in Montreal during Red Bull Music Academy festival and shared the idea of exploring the concept of feeling safe both on a personal level and as a part of society. Quite different from what you'd usually associate with Davidson but still worthy of your attention all the same. Beginning on the A side with "Collage" featuring some chilling drone experiments over textural sound design and field recordings which allow Davidson's haunting vocals to carry the track further into the void. Sounds like a cross between OAKE and Lustmord. Next up "Never Release The Tension" delves further into pitch black territory on this contorted downbeat industrial thriller. Finally on the flip, we've got an epic 10 minutes of haunting esoterica in the form of "Ten Years" and features Theo Parrish on cymbals! The label recommends it as for fans the late Mika Vainio, Black Rain, CTI, and the Bladerunner OST. Pretty on point, if we do say so ourselves!

Misinformation (6:01)
High Gates (3:39)
Macrodosing (5:34)
Collapsed Buildings (6:09)
Review: L.I.E.S latest muscular missive comes courtesy of Dutch scene stalwarts Parrish Smith (previously of Knekelhuis and Dekmantel) and Interstellar Funk (AKA Artificial Dance big cheese Olf van Elden). Rich in machine drums, cranky modular synth sounds and industrial intent, the four-track missive sees them angrily stomp between mind-altering, mid-tempo throb-jobs (the strobe-lit electronics and druggy arpeggio lines of "Misinformation"), buzzing 4/4 electro ("High Gates"), raw, redlined, noise-addled techno ("Macrodosing") and the kind of dark, moody and throbbing dancefloor fare that sits somewhere between angular industrial music and frustrated, lo-fi techno ("Collapsed Buildings"). For want of a better term, this is music for dystopian dancehalls, prorogued parliaments and the children of broken societies.

Review: Long players from L'estasi Dell'oro, D.A.R.F.D.H.S and Kartei signalled a move into artist albums from Dutch label Field that felt wholly right, and they've scored a real treat again in securing this Cold Radiance LP from Japanese artist IORI. Known for a potent brand of deep techno that has seen releases on Semantica, Prologue and DJ Nobu's Bitta label, Iori Asano is offered the chance to explore something different on this, his second album. Encourage to dabble in more explicitly ambient and experimental composition, Asano positively revels in this creative freedom for an eight-track album he himself likens to an "aerial sci-fi movie soundtrack." The gravelly sonic tones of opener "Transmission" sets the scene for what turns out to be one of the most enjoyable ambient techno albums of 2016 so far.
