Marcel Dettmann - "Activator" (6:17)
Zenker Brothers - "Namuan" (6:15)
Review: With the label's 50th and final release imminent, Modeselektor has decided to ramp up the pressure on 50 Weapons' last few EPs. Here, they turn to German techno royalty Marcel Dettmann, and fast rising Ilian Tape founders The Zenker Brothers. Dettmann kicks things off with "Activator" - a dark, intoxicating and smoky DJ tool built around shuffling, broken techno rhythms. As for the Zenker Brothers, their "Namuan" mines the world of 1990s loop techno for inspiration, with sweaty handclaps, fizzing electronics and clandestine aural textures riding a bouncy, chunk and formidably bass-heavy groove.

Sorting Peanuts (5:14)
Sample Predator (5:45)
Review: It's double trouble again from ever reliable Bavarian brethren: Dario and Marco Zenker. The Ilian Tape head honchos seem to look for inspiration from the West Midlands techno scene circa the mid '90s. The splintered, full-throttle machinations of A side cut "Sorting Peanuts" call to mind Force + Form era Surgeon with its stuttered and jarring pace - making equal room for tension and suspense. On the flip, the greyscale factory floor stomp of "Sample Predator" will please fans of the Downwards back catalogue - British Murder Boys and Female in particular.

Night Hustler (5:03)
Bias (5:59)
Karma Lounge (feat Philipp Von Bergmann) (6:00)
Neunkeu (5:47)
Review: Hot on the heels of their well-regarded debut album, Immersion, Germany's Zenker Brothers pop up on Index Marcel Fengler with four more tracks of dancefloor-focused techno. Opener "Night Hustler" has a surprisingly bumpy feel, with expertly programmed cymbals working in unison with a rising and falling refrain. The unflinching "Bias" - all dense drums and early '90s riffs - has an altogether ravier feel, while Philipp Von Bergman hook-up "Karma Lounge" pairs up high octane rhythms with a restless melodic motif. Finally, the duo doffs a cap once more to the early '90s with the hands-in-the-air riffs and pounding percussion of "Neunkeu".

Heeman
Mount Eleven
Kentay
Watz
Review: With their combined output and that of the artists they put out on Ilian Tape, Dario and Marco Zenker are certainly a formidable force in the German techno scene and here they're back on their own turf with four imaginative cuts that keep dancefloor focus in mind without giving way to tracky functionality. "Heeman" punches with the most forthright thrust of all the jams, riding some skippy hats over a rumbling tom-like bassline and tense synths, while "Mount Eleven" swerves out into broken beat territory with whirling wraiths of melody sealing the deal on a psychedelic and engrossing atmosphere. "Kentay" too comes packaged in a fragmented framework although the bottom end hits with a greater heft than its predecessor, and then "Watz" finishes proceedings off with a short sojourn into heavy-laden ambient material.

Shaketown (4:55)
Chi Boost (6:07)
Bengel Mode (5:16)
Outside (4:58)
Review: In recent times the Zenker Brothers seem to have spent more time running their inspired Ilian Tape imprint than they have producing music. While we'd hardly criticize their choices - Ilian Tape goes from strength to strength - it's certainly good to have them back. The Munich-based siblings begin their first outing of 2020 with the melodious, far-sighted electro shuffle of "Shaketown", before wrapping mangled, mind-altering electronic riffs around a crunchy techno groove of "Chi Boost". "Bengel Mode" sees the siblings successfully combine alien-sounding riffs with a denser techno rhythm track, while closing cut "Outside" is a sparkling trip into hypnotic, slow-release ambient techno territory with nary a kick-drum in sight.

Two Paths (5:22)
Power Supply (5:39)
Workhorse (5:55)
Hold On (5:57)
Review: It's the label heads themselves, Zenker Brothers, who step up for Ilan Tape's 65th EP. As ever they lead from the front with four fierce cuts of inventive, fresh and rhythmic techno that is masterfully arranged and hugely complex but never at the expense of dance floor clout. The opener 'Two Paths' is a physical and prickly blend of tightly programmed kicks and scraping percussion with howling synth winds. 'Power Supply' then rides on a funky drum line with aqueous pads, 'Workhorse' is a big room banger with panel-beaten lops and synths riding over the top and 'Hold On' shuts down with surges of warm, futuristic chords and glitchy filters.

Hidden Shelter

Enjoy Reality (5:19)
Look Precisely (6:12)
Focus On Positivity (5:55)
Practice Daily (5:45)
Review: Munich's pride The Zenker Brothers throw down a 'focused daily positivity practice' for Hidden Shelter, the latest release on their Ilian Tape imprint. The result is four tracks that read like a self-help manual: get motivated by the industrial strength breaks of 'Enjoy Reality', followed by the dubbed-out, greyscale stomp of 'Look Precisely' and find your vision. Turn over to side B and clarity awaits, albeit beyond the dense fog of the cavernous and glacial 'Focus On Positivity' and closing it out is the steely power of 'Practice Daily' which is rather typical of the duo's renown style and sure to inspire the potential in others.

Bavarian Stallion Series
Cat: RFR 003. Rel: 14 Sep 18
Zenker Brothers - "Schwirbler" (6:39)
Jelly3000 - "Wave A Wand" (6:04)
Kessel Vale - "Stroke" (5:13)
Steril - "Subsonic" (4:28)
Review: RFR's Bavarian Stallion Series reaches volume four. This time round, they've secured tracks from an impressive selection of pedigree producers. Noted techno studs the Zenker Brothers kick things off with "Schwirbler", a heavily distorted, energy-packed peak-time slammer with plenty of extra percussion to keep things moving, before Jelly3000 offers a more melodic and life-affirming take on the techno blueprint whilst retaining some heavy bottom end pressure. Over on side B, Kessel Vale lays down a spot of trippy, early morning broken techno with added Motor City electronics, while Steril impresses via a bouncy electro cut rich in warm and woozy synth stabs.

Review: The rise of Ilian Tape has been piloted by Dario and Marco Zenker with a steady assurance, so it makes perfect sense for the brothers to helm the first long player project from the Munich label. Immersion is a vibrant, atmospheric stroll through their various influences and inspirations with plenty to admire amongst the ten tracks. There is the bustling, leftfield breakbeat techno of "TSV WB" and pounding "High Club" (a no-nonsense dancefloor assault blessed with occasional eyes-closed chords), as well as sublime tech-jazz of "Cornel 21" and pitched-down junglisms of "Innef Runs". Interestingly, there are also a number of crusty, distorted ambient interludes, with "Erbquake" sounding particularly potent.

Review: There's an undeniably far-out feel to the Zenker Brothers' second album, Cosmic Transmission, which adds further layers of trippy textures, hallucinatory sounds and smoky intensity to the aural blueprint first explored on their 2015 debut full-length Immersion. There's much to admire throughout, from the mind-bending ambient weirdness of opener 'When Nothing is Safe', and the slipped dub haze of 'Whose In Control', to the drug-addled IDM of 'Natural Connection', and the polyrhythmic techno trip of 'Divided Society'. Most striking of all is the trio of tracks that close the album, all of which are powered forwards not by heavy techno beats (or even their usual crunchy, off-kilter breakbeats) but rather a series of ear-catching, fuzz-soaked synthesizer arpeggio lines.
