25 Years Of Drop Music Special Edition Pt 2

Larry Fives - "Make A Move" (6:50)
Inland Knights - "Push It" (6:48)
Inland Knights - "Long Time" (6:54)
Inland Knights - "Same Talk" (6:46)
Review: Drop Music marks a quarter of a century of reliable and ever-on-point sounds with a special series of EPs that embodies what it's always been about, offering up both classics and never-before-released tunes. This one kicks off with 'Make A Move' which is chunky low-slung tech. It unfolds at a relatively slow tempo but that gives the fat acid gurgles time to really hit. Inland Knights then serves up the next three cuts, starting with the bass bin bothering sounds of 'Push It', the more silky tech loops of 'Long Time' and the vocal-laced acid-tech swagger of 'Same Talk.' Here's to the next 25 years.

Squanchy Thoughts (feat Shibafu No Baga) (5:25)
Review: Following on from his remixes of Robert James' LP Battle Of The Planets, Berlin-based Klix goes in for the kill with four examples of club-friendly grooves that are big on dancefloor dynamics but also boast a delicate sensitivity to melody that's often left behind when it comes to the minimal/tech genre. Check, for instance, the distinctly understated acid undertow to 'Just Tell Me', balanced beautifully with lush, New Order-esque pads, or the almost imperceptible trails of flute left across the landscape of 'Satisfaction'. Best of all is probably 'Squanchy Thoughts' featuring Shibafu No Baga, the vocoders and synth lines rendering it like a post-rave Kraftwerk.

Right Place (8:59)
Review: We still don't know much about Digwah, but what we do know is that they make killer tech house cuts. In the past, these tasty, straight-to-business white label 12"s have been supported by dons like Ricardo Villalobos so Digwah is deffo doing something right. For this one, we get treated to 'Right Place' which samples some of the vocals, chords and fx from the legendary Radiohead tune 'Everything In Its Right Place.' They are layered into a sleek, silvery, well-polished tech house groover that bumps, grinds and makes you sweat. Sure to come big on the underground circuit.

Seperation (5:55)
Review: Demi Riquisimo's Semi Delicious reaches a significant milestone with its 20th release, unveiling a four-track EP from the ever-impressive Leeds producer, Kepler that's a stellar addition to the label's expanding repertoire, 'Step Up' launches the journey, a sub-bass-driven escapade that intertwines pulsating grooves with squelchy acid lines, encapsulating the label's ethos. 'Swoon' arrives next, blending a playful FM-bass lead with staccato vocals and warm pads for a vibrant dancefloor allure. The B-side's 'Acid Flow' faithfully channels classic 303 vibes, while 'Separation' pays homage to vintage US house, tweaked with Kepler's unmistakable UK tech-house stamp. It's a veritable feast for discerning dance music aficionados.

Review: Fledging but already fine young label U.Dig out of Croatia is back with more final gold, this time from a master of the form in Alexis Cabrera. He kicks off with the mini-epic that is '1997.5', a real head-melting and elastic acid tune that is perfectly deep and rolling for the freaky afters. 'Straight Up' is more punchy and taught, with low-slung drums and crisp hits powering it forward. Last of all things get brilliantly unhinged on 'Microrama,' a kinetic and densely packed cut with flappy snares blaring synths, withering melodies and a true sci-fi feel.

Harry Romero - "The Monk" (6:30)
Harry Romero - "Shoot Your Shot" (5:46)
Daniel Steinberg - "AC TC" (6:02)
Daniel Steinberg - "Do It For The Music" (6:14)
Review: For its latest release, revitalised New York house stable Nu Groove (now part of the Defected empire) has decided to showcase two tracks apiece from NY legend Harry Romero, whose first 12" was released 30 years ago) and long-serving Berlin house stalwart Daniel Steinberg. Romero handles side A, delivering a mind-mangling, 21st century take on acid house ('The Monk', one of his strongest cuts for some time) and the warehouse-ready, acid-flecked slab of peak-time nostalgia that is 'Shoot Your Shot'. Steinberg starts by peppering a swinging, low-slung deep house groove with jazzy electronic piano licks and pots and pans percussion on 'AC TC', before doffing a cap to the sleazier, more bass-heavy end of the jazz-house spectrum (and classic Switch/Solid Groove productions) via EP highlight 'Do It For The Music'.

Review: The Woodentops are long-time Balearic bossmen and peerless party starters and now their music is under the spotlight on this new remixes EP from Hottwerk. It is their tune 'A Pact' that gets four different versions here starting with a nice loose-limbed and percussive house workout from the UK veteran Bushwhacka!. Then Skyscraper HiFi B aka Anglo-Swedish pair Jon Dasilva and Jonas Nilsson offer a remix that slows it right down to a nice downtempo jam with indie vocals and then offer a second remix that is more sleazy and raw with a low-slung house grove topped with acid madness. Last but not least is the label head Spatial Awareness with a remix which glides on silky synths and airy drum loops with some nice trippy vocal touches.

Review: Repeat continues to do great work in bringing holy grail tech house back in the reach of real music fans with this third instalment in their All & All series with scene stalwart Terry Francis. This no nonsense white label package hides some of the sharpest tools in the tech house shed, not least Metal Dogz' heads down, tracky workout 'This World?' and Francis' own 'Late Night Overdose' mix of the track 'Breakfast @ Tone's' he produced with Evil Eddie Richards back in the day. Reel It In (feat Madaline - Summer Acid Burn) (5:49)
Review: 40 years have now passed since Larry Heard made his first record. Heard is, of course, without peers when it comes to deep house - he pretty much drew up the blueprint after all - though he does occasionally invite other producers to bask in his reflected glow. That's the case here, as he and Memphis-based Michael Kuntzman (an artist who has previously released music on Heard's Alleviated imprint) deliver a notable collaborative 12". Guest performer Maddaline whispers, sings and vocalises her way through the dreamy, richly electronic and sonically pristine 'Between Us', which is accompanied by a typically gorgeous 'Instrumental Dub'. There are two versions of 'Reel It In' - also featuring Maddaline - too: the deep tech-house shuffle of Heard's'Fingers Mix' and the back-to-Chicago-87 flex of Kuntzman's 'Summer Acid Burn' take.

The London crew has tapped up 16 artists for this one, with new names brought in and soon to find a sweet spot. The mix oversell is as varied and juicy as you would expect with Philippa's jazzy 'Chet's Vibe' exploring lovely deep house, 'Skleyka' by Lowres offering up some subtle funk infusions and 'We On Dis Ting' by Tiptoes getting a little saucy and steamy. Another well curated, well executed collection of essential modern sounds.

Review: Dutch artist Marsolo trips across Europe to find himself on French label House Puff Records here - and that's not where his journey stops because his grooves then take him all the way to the stars as his brand of deep house has plenty of cosmic style. Though his drums and grooves are delightful, it is his ability to speak with real meaning through his synths which elevate these tracks - vamping chords make way for hands in the air top lines and lush soul smears dissipate to allow funkier lines to appear, particularly on the lovely 'Passion Seeker.' These are stylish cuts with a classic sound but brought right up to date.

Review: Shan's second installment in his warehouse series continues to deliver the high-octane energy that made its predecessor a hit. The TRACKS perfectly capture the essence of underground raving in forgotten, defiant spaces. The opener, 'Phantazia,' leads the way, blending proto-hardcore vibes with soulful strings reminiscent of Soul II Soul. It's a track that commands attention, demanding action on the dancefloor. '89 Swing' and 'Euphony' bring in breakbeats that nod to the golden era of rave, with the latter evoking the atmospheric soundscapes of The Future Sound of London. 'Elevate' blurs the line between house and techno, creating a pulsating rhythm that's as hypnotic as it is driving. 'Uplift My Spirit' brings a touch of warmth with its break-for-love vibe, adding emotional depth to the EP. Each track on this EP is crafted to fit any rave setting, offering something for everyone, whether you're deep in a warehouse or lost in a late-night set. Shan delivers another potent dose of rave nostalgia, with a modern twist.

Review: The exceptionally named Panty Soaker Sound System bursts onto the scene here with a powerful debut EP on their own self-titled label. 'Hormones' marks the inaugural outing and is a track that ignites the floor while exploring self-empowerment and inner desires. It has picked up early praise from Honey Dijon and is a full-throttle and steamy, erotic house sound that is sure to become a bit of a winter anthem. The EP includes three acid-infused original mixes, followed by the Prosumer HorMoans Remix which is a dark stomper with prickly 303 lines and a heavy groove. For those craving a harder vibe, the LUXE Dark Room Remix delivers a broken-beat reimagining with high-energy that takes you to new heights.

Get House (Remaster) (10:06)
Review: Not everyone 'gets' house. First, there are those who dismiss it as mindless 4x4 schlock; then, even amongst those who ostensibly enjoy the moods that the genre lays down, there are still individuals who fail to appreciate the subtleties that glue the spaces between the beats, or the musicality that holds the tunes together as opposed the lacks thereof that might make them flop. Whatever the case, Calisto's Definitive Classic (TM) 'Get House' is an ahead-of-its-time house pioneers' artifact, coming as an early example of what some might call tech house, albeit nowadays most would simply assume is acid or breakbeat. Indeed, to truly be able to appreciate the differences betweem genres, you have to just, you know, kinda, just 'get it'.

Review: 'Detachment' is right, and Raymond Owen knows it. A mood of cool detachment is a crucial to most commercially viable dance records, be these under the aegises of Chicago house or dub techno. Bringing his craft to the Non Stop Rhythm sublabel Indulgence, Owen's untrammelled and tricky dance sound brings a sense of mechanistic drive and prosthetic modular weight to the floor, suggesting music for cyborgs with detachable limbs and affects (ahem, hence the name). The remixes on the B are especially cool and unreactive, as both AFN and Chieu Hoi respectively, progressively pare back the mix as thought they were the utmost cold, utmost sheer expositors of a minimal house hullabaloo.

Bad House Music (5:39)
Prog Power (6:29)
Do It (5:11)
Review: What is bad house music? Besides lazy non-objections like "it's a matter of taste", we'd go deeper and suggest bad house music is house music that doesn't respect the genre's roots (note: respecting should be defined in contrast to absolute loyalty; the two ideas are altogether different). Love Exposure's very own Chinichi shows an awareness of this distinction, laying down four tracks which only hint at the vibe of bumptious genre disrespect that some producers exhibit, without truly indulging it. "Bad" is defined secondarily here: "bad" as in devilish, seductive, charming. The title track and ensuers like 'Prog Power' and 'Do It' thus pump and kick, inducing extra fluttery come-hither eyes in the listener, by way of burly kicks, moreish trance elements and extra curvaceous synth hoots.

YCHTM Acid (6:51)
Review: A punctual reissue of a rare Eye 4 Sound tech-acid house party starter from 2004, this Repeat version of Dexter's 'Paradox' stays faithful to one of many EPs in UK artist Mat Royall's regal flush of technical itches to last from 01 to 06, spread across labels like Beat Code, Random House and, in more recent years, Real Deal and Bosh Records. 'Paradox' is subset by the fun-loving 'Ychtm Acid' on the B-side, and while we can't claim to be so clever as to be able to decode this standout track's strange titular acronym, we can vouch for the sickness of its eccentric percussions and atmosphere, a fine case of what we call "mood design".

Review: He may come from noted house stock (his dad being one of the residents at Glasgow's Sub-Club for decades), but Jasper James' continued success has been built on his undoubted qualities as a DJ and producer. The latter is clearly evident on the Glaswegian's first EP for ChiWax, which follows earlier lauded releases for the likes of Steel City Dance Discs and Optimo Trax. He goes for the jugular on opener 'Factor 50', peppering a raw, analogue bassline and sweaty acid house beats with sparkling piano riffs and occasional hands-in-the-air moments, before opting for a more Kerri Chandler-influenced sound on 'NY Fuzz'. 'Lost Trax' is a riff-sporting jack-track that sounds like it could have been made in Chicago in 1988, while 'Webster' is a gorgeous, analogue-rich deep house workout.

Notching up its 40th release in only five years, the collective energy of the cult doubles down on its spiritually-charged trance leanings with this righteous 18 track sermon featuring an impressive cast from close family members to headline acts. At a time when the early techno-trance sound has become so en vogue, Kalahari's clarity of vision and commitment to the vibe marks it out as a true scene leader.

For its inaugural release, the series spotlights four different artists with their own distinctive sound and who are all set to go on to big things, at least if you ask us of the evidence of this. Oh, and doesn't the B1 know the feeling; 'It's Never Enough' presents a muted call-and-responsive set of trance and acid lines, getting at the tired old feeling of insatiability (one especially rife in dance music), while, finally, 'Bilingual Animal' nods at the primal joys of straddling two languages.

Meine Lederjeans (Paranoid London remix) (6:27)
Review: Erol Alkan's faultless Phantasy Sound is one of the most high-quality but musically hard to predict labels out there. British Ugandan DJ Josh Caffe has dropped a few killers here before and has a full length coming later in the year but first is 'Meine Lederjeans'. It's a slow-motion electro-funk cut which vocals that drip with Prince-style sexuality and soul. The Paranoid London remix then does what Paranoid London remixes do - bring the grit, grime and sleaze. It's a raw and frazzled remix with early Chicago acid-house vibes. A superb EP with two very different but equally standout tunes.

Review: Hiver have a solid ten years of releases behind them for labels like Curle, Vidab and Fides, but now they're making the move to Peggy Gou's Gudu for a trip into celestial tech house of the highest order. This is sparkling, fantasy acid house with a slant towards glistening cascades of synth work reaching for euphoric peaks. There's a steadfast sense of melancholy folded into these tracks, whether it's the yearning string pads hovering over 'Dream Universe' or the augmented chords hovering over 'Purple Phaze'. 'Lodash' has an electro-disco tint and 'Higher Space' takes a slick approach to 90s stabs, rounding out a stadium-sized house record that fits right in on Gudu.

Review: Son explores a transcendental minimal and tech house sound here with Memoria Recordings. His Angel's Whisper EP is fittingly titled given the celestial charm and deftness of his grooves, not least the title track with its warm, humid pads and rolling rubber beats all backed by a white glow. 'Limitless' thumps a little more directly and has some molten 303 lines twisting and turning through the mix while 'What About Now' then gets its head up above the stars with suspensory pads and surging beats and bass all keeping you afloat. Finally, the same cut gets a Techu remix that brings a little extra texture but is still a smooth and serene tech house cruiser.

Review: Formerly known as AI Robot, Calin Dumitrescu refound his human side under his own surname as alias, having found residence in local labels Atipic, Particular and Unutrei since 2020. His debut for Myriad Records finds the third EP in the UK label's catalogue, with the headshaking chords and feverish acids of 'Acid E' helping synthesise a pharmaceutical drug we didn't know could or should exist, while 'Lucid Dream Gone Fucked Up' implies the necessary disturbance of a dream we'd never want to wake up from, by the intrusion of mechanic breaks, spy-vs-spy basses and creepazoid pads. The final two, ending on the perc-heavy 'Play Pause', contrast the A with a celebratory mood.

Review: Viceversa is back on Rowle having last appeared here for the label's fifth release. His sound as subtly evolved since then but still comes with plenty of meaningful melodies and rich percussive patterns that bring something fresh to tech house. 'Sea Waves' opens with waves of synth and dubby drums sweeping you off your feet. The Floog remix is doused in echo and reverb for a more fleshy feel then 'Ocean Drive' is silky dub house with gloriously sleek lines. 'Circular Quay' is a darker one to close. A trio of top Romanians in Barac, Raresh and Sit have already been supporting these, which is high praise indeed.

Review: Telomere Plastic asks you to Remember Your Days with a new six-track various artists EP full of delightfully designed club sounds. The melodies on Hiroyuki Kato are impossibly pure and delicate as they rain down the face of the shuffling drums of 'Black' while Six Dreams offers a complete vibe flip - the crisp and kinetic electro of 'Static Es.' Ty Senrna gets into a twitchy mutant tech house groove on 'Going Out Of Business' and Sherman C's 'Once U Pop' is an acid-laced breakbeat gem with a brilliantly tongue-in-cheek vocal sample that runs right through it, and Konerytmi shuts down with the silky drum breaks and sci-fi piste of 'Aikapiste'.

Review: The Red Bul & Gyn label made a good impression with its first release and now the founders Thomas Bulwer and G Glynn step up with a second collaborative EP of fresh tech and minimal. 'Caffeine' is a shot of energy with its rising synth lines and dramatic sense of intergalactic space travel over a busy, acidic bassline. 'Like It Ruff' is an old school throwback with rap vocals and electro beats, then 'Acid Wash Conflict' is a thumping tech house sound with unsettling pads. 'Techno Talk' closes down with a mid-tempo electro sound and retro-future edge.

Review: Fio Fa is back in his own label Sunset Drifters with four well-crafted and progressive cuts. 'Strengthen My Delusions' opens up the Delusions EP with twitchy electronics whipping about a steely arrangement with potent bass. 'The Wrong Side Of Doubt' has a winky lead taking centre stage over well programmed and crisp drums and hits and 'Partys Over' on the flip then layers up more future-retro sounds and slivery synth lines with a more moody low end and some sleazy vocals. Last but not least is the rather more serene and cosmically minded 'Another Epiphany' which cruises on acid-laced prog beats.

Review: Foehn & Jerome's Hermanngirl EP delivers four standout tracks perfect for house club sets. On Side-1, the title track 'Hermanngirl' offers a smooth blend of tech and minimal house, ideal for late-night or early-morning sessions. 'New Kontrol' follows with a techy, uptempo vibe and a wicked bassline that makes it a tech house bomb. Side-2 opens with 'Mrs Eleven' (Tell My Wife mix), which seamlessly blends techno and house with a catchy melody that will stay with you. The final track, 'He Was A Boy,' features an infectious acid line and a great bounce and bubble, making it a perfect dancefloor filler. This EP is excellent and ideal for fans of minimal and tech house. These underground tracks are what DJ's search for. Check these out!

Review: Aimed's return to its roots with Palmiz channels a familiar energy for fans of the label. 'Strange From 94' sets the stage, with euphoric, atmospheric vibes perfect for expansive, open-air raves. 'Chimera' follows, blending trance and house into a hypnotic groove, its smooth synths and rolling percussion creating a captivating intro for any set. On the B-side, 'Tropyc' offers a more utilitarian rhythm, moving away from melody and focusing on functionality, perfect for building momentum. 'Acid Washing' closes the EP with a driving bassline that intensifies the release's energy, adding an edge that pushes the vibe into sharper territory, capping off a well-rounded, nostalgic journey.

Take A Pill (5:07)
Take A Pill (Acid mix) (7:59)
Take A Pill (instrumental mix) (5:08)
Review: Cyclo Records starts the New Year right with a label debut from Dis Oui, a collective from South-West France. In its original form (track one), 'Take a Pill' is an intriguing fusion of styles, in which hands-aloft piano stabs, subtle acid tweaks, rushing chords and heavily accented English vocals rise above rock-solid electro-house beats and a joyously squelchy bassline. There's an accompanying instrumental mix for those who are less keen on the vocals and a fiendishly heavy, mind-altering 'Acid Mix'. This is naturally built around a wild, intense and psychedelic TB-303 line and offers a breathlessly rugged, ragged and intense take for those searching for something that's as raw and gnarled as it is trippy and strobelight ready.

N-Gynn - "Es Vedra TB Deluxe" (8:12)
Review: Mysticisms imprint strides purposefully into 2025 via a multi-artist extravaganza that touches on many of the label's regular musical themes. To kick things off, Utopia Records main man Alex Bradley offers up his take on Elements of Life's 1996 jam 'Are You With Me Love', reimagining it as a deep and spacey roller rich in languid trumpet motifs, metronomic synth bass and intergalactic pads, before Norwegian veteran Oyvind Morken asks 'How Bleep Is Your Love' via sprightly analogue synth sounds and jacking, sweat-soaked machine drums. Over on side B, Eirwud Mudwasser and Romansoff join forces on the deep, dubby, steel pan-sampling early morning tribalism of 'Cherrie', while N-Gynn treats us to a spot of deliciously deep acid house ('Es V edra TB Deluxe').

Review: Berlin producer Ede returns after their 2023 Innervisions debut 'Poptroit', this time for another melodic techno forward-facer. With a papillary front cover - resembling the suckers of an octopus or the polyps of a fantasy coral - we doubt the trypophobics out there will be at ease with this one. That is, at least until they hear the soothing progressives of 'I Am Wavy' and 'Odyssey', which build through and cleanse classic acid, rave and bleep motifs. The latter track has an incredible vocal breakdown, saturating and processing its stabs and chirp-hits just right.

Review: Fi-Lo returns with his fourth release on Alphaville Records and it might be his best yet. Drawing from 90s tech house influences, the artist adds his own signature spin to a set of four dynamic tracks designed for the dancefloor. The cheekily named 'Shaggin' Wagon' is a fluid blend of light and shadow, with acid and breaks setting the tone. 'Toro Bravo' on the A-side offers deep, expansive rhythms and a robust groove and over n the flip is 'All Work, No Play (Pressure Mix)' which unfolds as a relentless, evolving proggy weapon with a playful edge. Closing the EP, 'LA-Z BOY' introduces a laid-back vibe enriched with eclectic samples and a nice smooth flow.
