Don't You Wanna Play?
Cat: GUDU 002. Rel: 01 Oct 19
Electro
  1. CJ Vibe (7:29)
  2. DXIOO (5:21)
  3. Don't You Wanna Play? (5:43)
  4. 110 Series (4:20)
Review: After launching the Gudu label with a superb EP of her own productions, Peggy Gou has recruited Ed Upton AKA DMX Krew - one of the most reliable producers in the house and techno scene - to handle release number two. Upton is in fine form from the off, sprinting his way through the atmospheric late night chords, garage style organ motifs, bustling acid lines and jacking drums of opener "CJ Vibe". He moves further towards vintage Motor City techno territory on the lusciously melodious but percussively punchy peak-time skip of "DXIOO", before reaching for the boogie synths and proto-house drums on futurist electrofunk number "Don't You Wanna Play?". To round things off, Upton brilliantly dips the tempo and layers up spacey melodies over classic analogue bass on "110 Series".

Deep House
  1. Jigoo (with Peggy Gou) (6:31)
  2. Not Sure How I Would (6:05)
  3. One Itself (5:23)
Review: Here's something of a surprise: an EP from perennial deep house and disco eccentric Maurice Fulton on Peggy Gou's hyped Gudu imprint. The Sheffield-based American joins forces with Gou on A-side "Jigoo", with the pair peppering a squelchy synth bassline and Chicago house style drums with smile-inducing piano riffs and swirling electronics. Fulton reverts to weirdo disco mode on B-side opener "Not Sure I Would", a hard-to-describe number that contains many of his usual aural flourishes (live-sounding drums, bonkers bass, Clavinets, spiraling synth sounds etc), before flitting between African style hand percussion and taut machine drums on fine percussion workout "One Itself".

Moment EP (reissue)
Cat: GUDU 001RE. Rel: 03 Mar 20
Deep House
  1. Starry Night (6:40)
  2. Han Pan (6:42)
Review: Given her runaway success in recent years, it was almost inevitable that Peggy Gou would launch her own record label sooner or later. Wisely, she's chosen to kickstart said imprint - the freshly minted Gudu Records - with her first EP of fresh material for over 12 months. A-side "Starry Night" is an unashamedly positive and life-affirming affair, with Gou placing bouncy piano riffs, sultry South Korean and English vocals and Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style synth-bass atop a snappy, late '80s style house rhythm. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to the equally loved-up "Han Pan", where Gou's attractive vocals once again catch the ear alongside heavy analogue bass, chiming synth lines and Kwaito influenced drums.
