Call Me By Your Nail EP
Cat: GUDU 005. Rel: 17 Feb 21
Techno
  1. Particle Fever (6:14)
  2. Farout (5:20)
  3. Call By Your Nail (4:53)
  4. Clockroom (4:50)
Review: Brain De Palma appears to be a brand new project, or certainly one with no backstory of obvious links. Their first EP lands on Peggy Gou's Gudu Records following on from the likes of Maurice Fulton and DMX Krew in the last year or so. It's an EP of driving techno laden with melody and atmosphere suited to the wee small hours. 'Farout' is a particularly beautiful cut that has you gaze in wonder at the cosmic energies which fly by, 'Call By Your Nail' is an impressive colourful cut with a psyched-out sense of soul and 'Clockroom' ends on unresolved loops that keep drawing you back in.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. IQarus
  2. IQarus (Deniro remix)
  3. Purple Brain
  4. OWD (Once Were Dancers)
Review: Move over Ross From Friends;' Brain De Palma is the newest and most hilarious dance name to hit wide-scale public consciousness in recent memory. This time, the fun and slippery house music producer stops off over at Peggy Gou's new Gudu Records, delivering yet another lovable pun - 'Purple Brain' - to a surrealists' pipe dream, and four tracks of synthpop preciousness. Beachside cocktails and jelly glimmer in the sun as we take in the sonic glory of 'Purple Brain', which reminds us equally of the style of mysterious artist E. Myers blended with the 8-bit uplift of Cold Beat or Anamanaguchi. Choice cut two is 'Once Were Dancers', an arpy, farty, renegade dance bit suitable for much fruity ocean-skimming and saucy skinny-dips.

Deep House
  1. I Go (Soulwax remix)
  2. I Go (DJ Koze remix)
  3. I Go (Maurice Fulton remix)
Review: Released last year, 'I Go' saw Peggy Gou in Italo-disco-influenced synth-pop mode, with psychedelic acid lines, sweet South Korean vocals and attractive melodies rising above a Bobby Orlando-esque bassline. Here the track is given a new lease of life by a trio of high-profile producers. Belgian behemoths Soulwax do a terrific job re-inventing the track as a retro-futurist, warehouse-ready house epic - all muscular sequenced bass, bustling drums, rave-igniting stabs and hands-in-the-air intent. DJ Koze does a lovely job of re-framing 'I Go' as a bubbly, bright and breezy nu-disco number, while Maurice Fulton delivers one of those killer re-rubs based around his funky, cut-up bass guitar lines, Nile Rodgers guitar licks and sparse-but-snappy percussion.

I Go (12")
Cat: GUDU 007. Rel: 15 Sep 21
Deep House
  1. I Go (6:00)
  2. I Go (instrumental) (5:59)
  3. I Go (acappella) (3:03)
Review: Global dance music superstar Peggy Gou comes back with a second super summer single that is widely infused with her own distinctive influences. Chiefly, that is a love of 90's dance anthems, which was rekindled in her during downtime during the pandemic. Released via her own Gudu Records, 'I Go' is a catchy, singable bit of throwback dance-pop with her own vocals front and centre. The old school beats and bass will get any party pumped, with the synth work looks to the cosmos and explores a very different vibe to her previous single. An instrumental and acappella are also included on this lovely 12".

Moment EP (reissue) (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: GUDU 001RE. Rel: 29 Jul 22
Deep House
  1. Starry Night (6:40)
  2. Han Pan (6:43)
Review: Given her runaway success in recent years, it was almost inevitable that Peggy Gou would launch her own record label sooner or later. Wisely, she's chosen to kickstart said imprint - the freshly minted Gudu Records - with her first EP of fresh material for over 12 months. A-side "Starry Night" is an unashamedly positive and life-affirming affair, with Gou placing bouncy piano riffs, sultry South Korean and English vocals and Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style synth-bass atop a snappy, late '80s style house rhythm. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to the equally loved-up "Han Pan", where Gou's attractive vocals once again catch the ear alongside heavy analogue bass, chiming synth lines and Kwaito influenced drums.

Deep House
  1. I Go (Soulwax remix)
  2. I Go (DJ Koze remix)
  3. I Go (Maurice Fulton remix)
Review: House sensation Peggy Gou had a huge hit last year with the original of 'I Go.' It makes sense that it is now revisited by a hefty team of remixes who add their own spin to the catchy original. Acclaimed Belgian live pair and brotherly duo Soulwax open up with a typically tough version fill with stiff bass stabs and slapping hits. It is a brilliantly retro future gem. Pampa boss DJ Koze layers in some freewheeling and signature naive melodies for his version and Maurice Fulton then brings a much more laid back and deep version with the lush vocals paired with finger clicks and languid guitar funk.

Deep House
  1. Nabi (3:52)
Review: Following up last year's production with Baltimore techno legend Maurice Fulton on 'Jigoo', the next release on Gudu is the first of two songs by label boss Peggy Gou that she will release over the coming months. Her first single in over two years, it translates to 'Butterfly' and is another collaboration. This time with fellow Korean sensation OHHYUK who is the lead singer and guitarist in the band Hyukoh. 'Nabi' is a downtempo, pop-inflected number said to be inspired by '80s synth classics and '90s Korean songs that Gou's mother used to play at home during her childhood.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. From Above
  2. Spatial Bliss
  3. Fizz
  4. Cloudride
Review: Given her South Korean roots, it's perhaps unsurprising that Peggy Gou has chosen to give a platform to Mogwaa, a producer who has long been a fixture on the South-East Asian country's electronic music scene. His debut EP for Gudu is genuinely impressive, offering synth-heavy, mid-tempo takes on house and nu-disco awash with colourful melodies and sun-kissed chords. Opener 'From Above' is a bubbly, energy-packed affair that gathers momentum throughout, while 'Spacial Bliss' cannily combines live drums and guitars with sparkling washes of sound, cascading melodies and a deliciously tactile bassline. Over on side B, 'Fizz' sees Mogwaa add synthesized Gayageum melodies to a punchy electro beat, before 'Cloudride' rounds things off via turn-of-the-90s Italian deep house sonics and more gorgeous, life-affirming lead lines.
