Review: Originally released in 1977 (the year of punk's simultaneous birth and more notably, death), (I'm) Stranded has gone on to become, not only one of the most vital pieces of OG Aussie punk, but commonly considered as one of the quintessential early blueprints for an entire generation of artists. Staying on course and not even wading into the creative differences that would soon loom large over each subsequent follow up, this box set arrives as a joint collaboration between L.A. garage rock label In The Red, Universal Music Australia and spearheaded by Feel Presents and The Saints founder Ed Kuepper (later Laughing Clowns), who collectively deliver the original LP remastered for the time in four decades, along with never-before-pressed-to-wax bonus discs of a five-song live performance from Paddington Town Hall in Sydney in 1977, the band's full set from the Hope & Anchor Front Row Festival, London November 1977, all three tracks from the 1977 This Perfect Day 12" and all four tracks from 1977's 1-2-3-4 double 7" single, as well as the previously unreleased 1976 demo mix of the (I'm) Stranded LP. Also boasting a 28 page 12" x 12" photo essay of the band covering their origins from 1973 through the end of '77, authorised band history, an 8" x 10" 1976 promo photo, and sticker, this is fan service and an album celebratory box set done right.

Review: London's legendary Mute institution goes back to its roots and digs up some of the best work by one of the UK's finest Cabaret Voltaire. These guys don't really need an introduction give the fact that they're pretty much responsible for the rise of post-punk right through to the birth of techno. It was about time a new compilation of their stuff was released, especially one as brutally on-point as this one! All the classics such as "Nag Nag Nag", "Kneel To The Boss" and "On Every Other Street" are one here but the more obscure rarities that were previously only available on 7" are the real winners. "Just Fascination", for example, is one you'll certainly want on a longer, re-mastered cut! Downright essential!

It drew together all their finest moments from the proceeding decade but gets the full reissue treatment here with limited numbered gatefold 180 gram and coloured wax. The Belgian rock band hail from Antwerp and in their heyday mixed up alt-rock, post-grunge and folk rock on a series of albums that went gold and platinum in various countries around the world. This collection has all the big, stadium-sized tunes as well as the more quiet moments of introspective calm. It's a great reminder of a band that had a big impact at the turn of the millennium.

Review: While the world instantly remembers Ennio Morricone's heroic contribution to the world of movie scores at the height of the Spaghetti Western trend - Italian produced cowboy flicks set on the frontier of an early United States - less people will jump to the name Bruno Nicolai. And yet, here we are, faced with one of the greatest soundtracks ever written for any film in the canon. Archetypal of the genre, Nicolai conducted many of his close friend Morricone's scores, and this betrays what to expect from this masterpiece. The soundscapes are grand and pompous, open and mysterious, edgy and tense. Varied, but always the aural equivalent of panning across almost-unchartered plains and seeing a solitary rider appear on the horizon. If that sounds remotely entertaining, this is an essential.

Review: Mark Broom is a techno veteran, but just because he enjoys that sot of status doesn't mean he has lost his edge. He proves that here with a hefty new record on Radio Salve's mighty Rekids. It bangs from the off with his signature heavy drums defining each of the tracks across all four sides of vinyl. '100% Juice' is peak time tackle with incendiary hit hats and loopy synths, 'Slush' is a head melter with more warped lines and elsewhere 'Wonky Workout' does exactly what says on the tin. There is a brilliantly unsettling and eerie vibe to 'Boxed In' and straight up dance floor fire in 'Wiggle Me This.'

Review: Brock Van Wey is bvdub, a towering ambient figure and venerated veteran who continues to find newness in his work. He's back on Past Inside The Present here with 13 (on vinyl for the first time) which, he says, "represent one edict or idea from chapter 13 of the Tao Te Ching" which are about putting focus on humility and freedom from desire as a way to lead a peaceful life. Flickering melodies and slowly shifting harmonies set the tone from the off with track two introducing pulsing keys and low-end distortion. Elsewhere, layers of propulsive patterns and dubby motifsweave together with soft distortion and tracks ten and 11 build to great intensity and the finale brings delicate strings. There is brilliantly left-of-centre minimal from Roman Flugel and Frank Weidermann to kick off, then melody-rich deep house from Bubble Wrap, and an absolute classic from the one and only Herbert who supplies 'Air.' Review: The Marc Bolan 'Songwriter' series has proven hugely successful and after the focus was on 1972 last time out, this time we jump another year back to 1971. This vinyl-only and intimate release shines a light on the private life of Bolan and how that altered his approach to songwriting. It was in 1972 that his band T-REx became chart-topping superstars and across the 19 tunes here are long versions of tunes like 'Hot Love' and 'Get It On' as well as plenty of b-sides, working versions and demos and a nearly 15-minute long acoustic demo of 'Children of Rarn.'

Review: The Black Crowes have never been ones to hide their inspirations. The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. The year doesn't so much nod to the songs specifically as the feeling, and a particular era of sound they were aiming for. Given their skin in the game, it's no surprise to hear them nail the likes of 'Rocks Off' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', paying homage and doing their own thing in equal measure.

Review: Formed in the Annan, Dumfries/Cumbria no man's land of English/Scottish borderland in 1978 before dissolving in the early 80s, The Limps are another case of a forgotten punk gem who never truly received their flowers. Releasing only a handful of singles during their short-lived tenure, which managed reliable spins from legendary DJ John Peel, this compilation collates every known recording of the band's output onto one singular slice of wax, including cuts taken directly from their Peel Sessions. The much anticipated pressing also comes just as the band are enjoying somewhat of a resurgence due to the use of their track 'Someone I Can Talk To' in the 2024 teen comedy Snack Shack. According to guitarist and songwriter Andy Septic (nowadays known as Cumberland Council's councillor and former mayor of Cockermouth Andrew Semple) - "John loved the second record saying it was a 'considerable improvement' from the first. We recorded his show on tape then years later we put it on YouTube and that's where the film director heard us", before humorously clarifying, "We've received a bit of money, but there's not much when it's got to be divided between four of us". Don't sleep as this small batch or rarities won't stick around long.

Review: Dark Entries takes it back to New York City in around 1982 for this previously unreleased record from Ike Yard. This cult crew was made up of Stuart Argabright, Michael Diekmann, Kenneth Compton, and Fred Szymanski and they worked in their own realm somewhere between proto-body music and No Wave peers in New York. They disbanded just a year after forming having dropped an EP on Les Disques du Crepuscule in 1981 and then a self-titled album for Factory in 1982. Using the Korg MS-20 and the Roland TR-808 they cook up plenty of hybrid electro-acoustic sounds and ramshackle rhythms that are underpinned by moody baselines and perfect to get bodies moving in the club. Whether you're a post-punk fan or lover of weird electronics, this is well worth checking out.

His famously hardware-driven sound is pure bay-popping perfection and has seen him define and redefine electro many times over. Staying true to his signature 80s west-coast electro sound, his new album 1987 echos classics of his like 'Egypt, Egypt' and Thebes of them all, 'I Need a Freak', by blending signature Roland 808 beats with Kraftwerk and hip-hop influences. Review: Saada Bonaire was a German disco and world music project from the unlikely town of Bremen. Formed in 1982 by DJ Ralf Behrendt, the unique concept band was based around the super seductive vocal sounds of Stefanie Lange and Claudia Hossfeld. The musicians in the band were from local immigration centres and they signed to EMI to put out one single only, 'You Could Be More As You Are.' Dennis Bovell produced it in Kraftwerk's studio and it fused dub, African sounds, drum machines and synths into something special. The band was cancelled soon after but not before they realised a load of the tunes that had already written on this essential album.

Review: The DJ Spinna 1998 Beat Tape vinyl finally arrives having previously only been available on digital after initial release in 2000. It is the this in a series after the 1997 and 1996 beat tapes he dropped back in 2019 and 2017 and again finds Vincent Williams serving essential hip hop beats. They are often depend packed with soul, with jostling kick and raw his interlaced with well chosen samples, curious vocals and cute melodies. It is a perfect soundtrack to a lazy afternoon, or great source material for DJs looking to bring a cinematic sound.

Running the gamut of deep, underrated tracks from the likes of Type O Negative, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy and Pantera, this mini-LP of sorts offers a unique insight into the essential components which primary songsmith Nate Garrett constantly finds himself reverting back to, in search of inspiration and rejuvenation. Featuring two brand new songs; the pummeling 'Sorcerer's Fate', and the aptly titled, 'Mass Formation Psychosis', as well as some major surprises (the rendition of Metallica's 'Ride The Lightning' deep cut, 'Escape', is exceptionally potent), this collection keeps the momentum churning on from 2020's last full-length, 'Enlightened in Eternity', and serves as testament to the band's inability to sit still for more than a few months.

Review: First things first: the world has come a long way in its attitude to women since this album was first released, so in 2019, 2001 sounds - at least lyrically - wrong on many levels. But it is also still very right when it comes to g-funk, west coast rap and second wave hip hop sounds. Listening to it from start to finish is to spend 90 minutes as a fly on the wall of the lives of Snoop, Dre, Eminem and all the rest of the high profile guests. Jam packed with classics and gold standards, this is an album of its time but one that was never bettered.

Review: Alphataurus may not mean that much to a lot of people, but for anyone aware of the Milanese progressive rock titans, the fact they have a new record out will capture the imagination. After all, the outfit have been making a big impact with every album they've put out since - and including - the staggeringly ambitious self-titled 1973 debut. However, it's been a decade since we last had anything from them. Enter 2084: Viaggio Nel Nulla, then, a collection of music that marks a real turning point for Alphataurus, with the lengthy (to put it mildly) recording process ending with the departure of founding guitarist Guido Wassermann. Whether die hard fans will think what's here is worth the pain of that decision to leave is anyone's guess, but this collection is unarguably dystopian, futuristic, exploratory, cosmic and, almost conversely, accessible and catchy.

Review: Two of life's great escape artists, Polo & Pan, or Paul Armand-Delille and Alexandre Grynszpan, first bonded in the chronological hinterland of nightlife's operating hours, at the iconic Parisian nightclub, Le Baron. We weren't there, but in our minds they talked about quantum theories, and maybe came up with the phrase "everything everywhere all at once". But nobody can be sure. Apart from the artists. Since then, they've committed themselves to creating beautiful, weird, tropical house-synth-pop-electronica stuff which they say transcends moments and places, people and cultures. 22:22 is their triumphant return after four years without a full length, and it's every bit as good as fans were hoping for. Dive in, the water is lovely - wherever in the time-space continuum it is.

Review: Hoga Nord welcome Gravite for the third in their Layers album series and it is another intense synth, dub, chug and cold wave mix. Right from the off, the textures are caustic and uncomfortable. Squealing synths speak of desperation and trauma as whaling winds blow all around on 'Eclipse'. 'Chilled' has a heavy chugging rhythm that's overlaid with mournful chords that bring bittersweet melancholy and the paces picks up with the punk funk of 'Red Horizon' (feat Al Lover). Later on there are buzzy synths and busted drums on 'Into The I' and deep and dubby techno on 'Into The I' to make for an adventurous album that travels far and wide.

Review: Legendary South African composer and pianist Abdullah Ibrahim is back with a new album, 3, that shows he very much still has the skills to pay the bills. It arrives on Gearbox records and features music taken from his sold out date back in summer 2023 at London's Barbican. The man himself is now 84 years old but is drawing on all those years playing to make the most majestic music of his career, with heart swelling piano and enticing melodies all serving as life affirming reminders. Parts of this feature the full recording including the audience and parts are music only, with spoken word snippets interspersed to make it seem all the more cosmic.

Review: The long-awaited ninth full-length from legendary Japanese noise-rock duo Melt-Banana comes over a full decade on from 2013's exceptionally bizarre Fetch, marking their longest gap between albums yet. They know how to serve up the most potent dancefloor bombs for DJs who like to make an impact and after countless 7"s to that effect, they now drop an entire album's worth of high-grade tackle. 3rd Drop from this Russian quartet takes in 12 of their most signature sounds, from the rolling and cosmic-tinged open 'Adventures Begin' via the bristling broken beats of 'Not Good, Too Bad.' There is a 60s American feel to many of these cuts as well as some more slow and sentimental moments like the organ-laced melancholy of 'From Darkness To The Light'.

Review: Based in New York City, YHWH Nailgun (pronounced "Yahweh") are a newfound experimental noise-rock four-piece who have varied acceptance on what can be deemed "noise". Built around the ludicrous percussive ability of drummer Sam Pickard whose use of rototoms conjures an organic yet mechanistic pulse, warped and compressed guitars collide with an array of synths and electronic elements all infused with the suffocated, ranting, rambling, unhinged shrieking of vocalist Zack Borzone. Their debut full-length 45 Pounds bubbles with a similar art-noise sass-punk quality to very early HEALTH (before they rebooted as the industrial-metal trio they're known as today) yet attempting to still fit in with the likes of The Jesus Lizard or Chat Pile. They don't whatsoever, and they're all the better for it, as these unhinged 21 minutes condense saccharine, bubblegum machinery into some of the most frenetic compositions recorded all year. Just because it can only be described as "noise-rock" doesn't mean it necessarily sounds like noise-rock.

Review: Continuing the onslaught of Slipknot back catalogue reissues, '0.5: The Gray Chapter', saw the collective channel the shared grief and inner turmoil of losing their bassist Paul Gray, into a dynamic, vicious fifth full-length that served as a twisted follow up to 2008's global success, 'All Hope Is Gone.' Harboring some of their darkest singles in over a decade, such as the blistering, 'The Devil In I', or the claustrophobic assault of, 'Custer', many may consider the project to be the outlier within the 9's canon, but with drummer Joey Jordison's last recorded performance, and before the rebirth of 'We Are Not Your Kind', this work served as a complicated reflection of artists lost in a deep state of bewilderment and trauma; utilising their connection and artform to process and heal in ugly, chaotic abandon.
