Review: Obscure Shape's Zukunft is a dark, high-tech techno experience that delves deep into the realms of futuristic soundscapes. Released on Planet X Records from Iceland, this album is packed with intense, brooding tracks that keep the energy relentless. Side-1 opens with 'Die Ruckkehr,' setting a powerful tone with its pulsating rhythms, followed by 'Zuruck In Die Zukunft,' which continues the dark, driving atmosphere. 'Children Of Men' closes the side with haunting, cinematic vibes. Side-2 introduces 'Verblendung,' a track that builds tension with its deep, swirling bass, while 'Inception' and 'Der Poet' push the boundaries of techno with intricate, layered beats. Side-3's 'City Of God' and 'Imagination' explore more experimental territory, with 'Genetic Bliss' offering a pulsating conclusion. Review: On April 17, 1994, Led Zeppelin's main songwriters reunited for the Alexis Korner Memorial Concert in Buxton, England. In August, they recorded performances in London, Wales, and Morocco featuring Egyptian and Moroccan orchestration of classic Led Zeppelin tracks along with four new songs. These performances were broadcast as a 90-minute MTV special UnLedded which led to a successful tour starting in February 1995. This newly reissued release captures an exceptional performance from that tour and includes both new material and Middle Eastern-influenced renditions of Zeppelin classics like 'Bring It On Home,' 'Ramble On,' 'The Song Remains the Same,' 'Black Dog' and 'Kashmir.'

Review: Not to be confused with Zoot Allures, the 22nd studio album by American rock enigma Frank Zappa - released in 1976 - but purposefully confusable with that record, Zoot Alloors is just one artefact from the artist's critically acclaimed and technically astounding broadcast from New York City in November 1981. Like everything else Zappa, this mini-LP is part of a wider universe he constructed for himself before inviting fans to exist in it with him, and his inimitable performances style is captured here beautifully. Even the recording does its best to suck us right in there and leave us to explore. Tracks aren't so much tracks, but jumping off points for intense rock & roll, jazz, blues, glam and psyche jam movements that are invigorating, captivating and disorientating. A true original.

Review: Allegedly one of the first ever records to make use of sampling, Jean-Michel Jarre's seventh album Zoolook brought with it a unique vibe, one well worth looking back on in light of its latest Sony reissue. In terms of notoriety, Zoolook pales in comparison to the electronic music crackerjack's 1976-8 heyday, which saw to both Oxygene and Equinoxe; but this is understandable, as Zoolook came much later, and sacrificed the grandiose mood of otherworldly space-awe for an eerier menage of playful factory hits and cacophonous dance hubbubery. Perhaps this sound - a jankier one that grew in popularity in the mid 80s - was driven by Jarre's use of the Fairlight CMI workstation and sampler, an example of a piece of gear that had the power to define an entire sound. We'd venture to say that the titular "Zoolook" is a kind of gaze that, by virtue of us living in a machine society, makes animals of us all.

Zoe, his first studio album and second release with Black Editions, recorded at Tokyo's renowned GOK Sound, stands out as a powerful and clear expression of his artistry. The album's two extended tracks capture Kawashima's music in its purest form, preserving its raw, spiritual essence. Unlike typical studio recordings, Zoe remains unpolished, with only the faint pre-echo of the reel-to-reel adding a ghostly touch. Kawashima's solo practice aligns him with iconoclastic Japanese saxophonists like Kaoru Abe, Tamio Shiraishi, and Masayushi Urabe. His work, situated at the fringes of improvised music, emphasises silence and subtle sounds as much as intense bursts of tone and texture. His approach is deeply intimate and vulnerable, steering clear of the bravado often seen in solo improvisation, effortlessly blending searing melodies with heavily textured passages.

Review: Two years after his critically acclaimed album Ultrachroma, Kangding Ray makes a typically bold return to ARA with his dance-floor-focused new long player, ZERO. The artwork reflects his diverse explorations and influences which converge here into a cohesive sound designed to ignite movement in the club. This album revisits the essence of his early work and is rather reminiscent of his debut on the experimental label Raster-Noton but it also incorporates the hypnotic elements characteristic of his DJ sets. Continuously evolving his sound and pushing the boundaries of the genre, all 10 of these tunes are mend melting and atmospheric rollers speed in great sound design.

Review: Wave Particle Singularity takes charge of the first release on Groove On The Carpet and shows off his fine house music credentials. This trip begins with 'Zarbeeya' which is a soulful sound filled with Saharan chords and chants by the artist's best friend's wife, Sabrina, who hails from Algeria. The next track tells the story of the carpet manufacturing process and on the B-side, 'Ghardaia' delves into micro-minimalist grooves with desert-like harmonies while the final track is a nice dubby groover that ties the EP together and links the Algerian Sahara to Berlin's electronic scene.

Review: Parus is a Belarusian ethno-ambient project blending pagan songs with modern soundscapes and Zara is their debut album. Led by ethnographer and folk singer Hanna Silivonchyk, the record features traditional Belarusian songs in various dialects, all accompanied by synths and field recordings crafted by Anton Anishchanka. The tracks were gathered during ethnographic expeditions across Belarusian national parks, and songs like 'Soniejka' and the title cut offer intimate reflections on life, love and mythology. It connects to the past while maintaining a deep personal edge that makes Zara a fascinating exploration of Belarusian culture.

Review: Raphael Roginski's latest album, ealtys, delves into the rich blend of Eastern European mythology and nature, drawing inspiration from the grass snake ealtys, a revered spirit in Lithuanian folklore. This release follows Roginski's critically acclaimed 2023 album Talan and is steeped in personal and cultural significance. Rooted in Roginski's childhood visits to the Suwalki region of Poland, ealtys reflects his early fascination with Lithuanian music and his experiences recording ambient sounds in the forest with a four-track recorder. The album pays homage to Eastern European folk traditions through its track titles, which are derived from Lithuanian plant names. Yet, Roginski's sound is uniquely eclectic, blending jazz, American primitivism, and mysticism. The music evokes a sense of nostalgia and wonder, reminiscent of nights spent on a Lithuanian lake gazing at the stars. Collaborating with Warsaw producer Piotr Zabrodzki, Roginski explores innovative techniques, including "guitar piano" and overdubbing, to create a resonant, wind-like sound. The album features guest appearances by Indre Jurgeleviciute of Merope and pianist Zabrodski, adding depth to the evocative soundscape. This album has the ability to make new fans of a genre many might pass up or not that get that much exposure. This album is worth your time.

Review: Originally formed for a one-time performance at the 2017 Bath Festival, vocalist and violinist Alice Zawadzki, pianist Fred Thomas and bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado have crafted a beautifully nuanced collection of songs drawing from diverse traditions such as European folk, Sephardic Jewish, and Latin American music. The album's title, meaning Behind the Mountains in Polish, reflects its rich, cross-cultural roots. Zawadzki's haunting voice brings the listener into each piece, while Thomas and Mullov-Abbado's instrumental interplay creates an evocative, fluid backdrop. Standout tracks include 'Sueltate as Cintas', where delicate piano and bass intertwine under Zawadzki's spellbinding vocals, and 'Tonada de Luna Llena', which rises and falls with an emotional intensity that builds on Venezuelan composer Simon Diaz's melody. Throughout the album, the trio's seamless fusion of folk, jazz and classical elements creates a unique sonic palette. Thomas' arrangement of James Joyce's Gentle Lady is another highlight, blending poetic lyrics with soft instrumental flourishes. Recorded in Switzerland under the direction of ECM's Manfred Eicher, Za Gorami is a stunning result to their collective chemistry.
