Review: This new 2xLP 30th anniversary vinyl edition of the superbly curated soundtrack to Reality Bites is a musical testament to a under-recognised film classic. The 1994 romcom starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller follows the deflated life of an aspiring videographer, who in turn documents the disenfranchised lives of her friends and roommates. Thus known for its candid but still somewhat sensationalistic depiction of the young adult lives of Generation X, the soundtrack therewith is fitting, featuring from Squeeze, Dinosaur Jr., The Knack, U2, Lenny Kraviz, Big Mountain, Me Phi Me and even Ethan Hawke himself.

Review: You could probably buy every Soul Jazz compilation known to humankind and come out on top of most other people's record collections. As a label, the crew's ability to track down, rediscover, unearth, and reappraise archive music, and package things up as part of a spellbinding collection of like sounds, is remarkable, and the imprint must be up there with the best curated on the planet. The output is so good, in fact, that here we are pushing a reissue of the 2002 compilation, In The Beginning There Was Rhythm. Pieced together by Stuart Baker and Adrian Self, it's a wonderful trip into the deceptively varied world of UK post punk during its nascent, formative years. Informed by dub, psychedelia, punk, synth, samples and more, it's a celebration of a genre that proves you could spend all day listening and not really hear the same type of tune twice.

Review: Telling the story of a teenage girl battling thyroid cancer which has spread to her lungs, and the amputee osteosarcoma survivor she meets and falls in love with at the support group her mother encourages (forces) her to attend, suffice to say emotions run high in The Fault In Our Stars. A bonafide tearjerker, both in its original novel and subsequent 2014 movie form, anyone who wasn't expecting the score to the latter to be filled with huge rousing and heartrending indie pop was kidding themselves. Here we have it, then, opening on Ed Sheeran, into Jake Bugg, Kodaline, Lykki Li, M83, Ray Lamontagne and Charli XCX, the track list reads like a map of Gen Z coming of age with a few treats for millennials, and plays out like a radio station that lives up to the 'killer no filler' claim. Providing, that is, you're moved by stadium-sized balladry, sing-along chart dance and shoegaze-y electronica.

Review: You don't need to have seen the summer blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine to know exactly what it's like. Alarm bells began ringing years ago at Marvel over the decline of interest around a universe which, in cinematic terms at least, seems to have no limits or qualms about churning out product, no matter the quality. Things have got worse since, albeit with a few exceptions - like the Deadpool franchise. The wisecracking anti-hero's flicks go for a more adult jugular than many comic book adaptations, and therefore the character makes an ideal partner for the X-Men's blade-fingered menace, Wolverine. Together, they make an odd couple that were never going to be in a straight-up superhero talkie. Instead, it's tangible tongue-in-cheek at times, lighting paced, and delightfully self-aware stuff that needs a soundtrack running between over-cooked chart emo to classic croonerville, 1980s pop rock to rousing r&b. Here you go then.

Review: What's not to love here? It's a best of proper 80s indie pop, so it delves into C86 territory, with the likes of Primal Scream, The Wedding Present and The Pastels all represented. Other highlights include Scottish legends - and pre-C86 indie label pioneers - Orange Juice and their banger 'Dying Day', which still sounds soulful and ahead of its time. This excellent double-disc compilation gives a taste of what he was listening to in that period, moving between reggae, dub (the Revolutionaries, Joe Gibbs & The Professionals), throbbing Euro-disco (Space, Giorgio Moroder), American garage-rock (Iggy Pop), spaced-out spoken word eccentricity (John Cooper Clarke), formative new wave synth-pop (The Normal, The Human League), industrial (Cabaret Voltaire), punk (and lots of it), and much more besides.

Review: Secret Superstar Sounds, courtesy of Soul Jazz, offers an eclectic and excellent collection of oddball punk and powerpop rare cuts from little-known bands from the late 70s, including but not limited to The Squares, The Meanies, The Monitors, Plummet Airline, and Krypton Tunes. Falling between the cracks of punk, new wave and post-punk, these unfairly overlooked and forgotten to time gems came from a slew of DIY ethos purists inspired by the messaging of bands like The Desperate Bicycles, Sniffing Glue fanzine and early UK punk labels like Stiff, Chiswick and Rough Trade, recording everything in-house, then sending their recordings to the likes of John Peel and labels with hopes of some airplay or recognition, little of which came. A long-lost micro-genre of unfairly forgotten underground punk (but not punk) gems awaits.

Review: On the label's latest deep dive into the margins of underground music culture, Soul Jazz Records has decided to take us back to the late 1970s and Britain's DIY 'powerpop' movement - a self-contained micro-scene whose obscure and proudly independent artists mixed elements of punk with (as the extensive liner notes put it) "melodically beautiful 60s pop and garage sounds". On offer is a predictably impressive, 150-track selection of self-released songs from bands forgotten by all but the most obsessive powerpop nerds. Highlights include the gravelly, ten-ton riffs and bawled vocals of 'London' by Gobblinz, the proto indie-jangle-goes-punk strut of Xdreamysts' 'Right Way Home', the bass-heavy post-punk joy of The Monitors' 'Compulsory Fun' and the post-punk reggae/blue-eyed soul fusion of 'Cry Myself To Sleep' by Cosmic Romance.

Review: Not just a clever name, then, this companion piece to the equally aptly-titled Nice Swan Introduces Volume 1 gives an overview of highlights from the exalted UK independent record label, based on releases between since spring 2022. Suffice to say, there have been many notable additions to the back catalogue in that time and the tracks have come as broad as they have thick and fast. As this incredibly varied collection proves, from the surreal antique balladry of Avice Caro ('End of the Day'), to the noise metal of 'Gmaps' by Cowboyy. Attempting to pick particular must hears isn't easy, or logical, then. But let's just say the raw garage rock 'n' roll twang of Shady Baby's 'Come to Life' and Splint's riff-happy '145' are definitely up there. As is the psychedelic-hued indie of Saloon Dion ('Hey Hey') and the Prima Queen's dreamy 'Chew My Cheeks'.

Review: Under The Bridge was a compilation of work by artists who had, at some point or another, recorded on the cult imprint Sarah Records. It should already be on your radar. If not, we recommend digging for it. Now here's part two, a 2024 update which takes that idea much further, presenting a more expansive track list and platforming some brand new projects to boot. Timeless stuff comes thick and, quite often, pretty fast, with plenty of driving garage rock to feel propelled by. Old favourites are here, for example Even As We Speak and Secret Shine, Action Painting! and The Hit Parade. And there are also new groups, such as Michael Hiscock of The Field Mice leading an act called Gentle Spring, and a collaboration between Mark Tranmer and James Hackett, both usually of The Orchids (who also appear on here), but recording as Vetchinsky Settings. Emerging from the same late 70s/early 80s mutant formaldehyde mists that spawned This Mortal Coil and Crepuscule, yet bringing the dream pop sound to Glasgow, Hugh Small and Anna Howson are still going strong as a boutique bringing-together of mindful, magnetic musicians, pedigreed for the seemly discotheque. First released on Cathexis Records, we are indeed much cathected to both EPs in this collection. In sloshing but somehow still self-contained fashion, 'Your Final Word' swims in reverb nearly to the point of drowning its own harmonies, yet breathability is somehow still retained. 'Bleached White Skin' is the perfect storm of wavy wash, operatic doublings and ditzy drum machine, and 'Breath' brings spring-verb coldwave stylings to a languorous, pitchy closer. Then 'Feverpitch' and 'For A Reason' hear the compilation sprawl further into arpeggiating tumult, as we move on to material from the 1987 'Feverpitch' EP. This 40th anniversary edition collates both EPs and adds a handful of unissued minimal wave pearls.

Now Playing might be based around a relatively obvious playlist if you've been a fan of the band longer than a couple of minutes, centring as it does on the group's late era classics, but when the late career classics are this good who the hell cares? Well, maybe Loaded and The Velvet Underground & Nico, original LPs that contribute the vast majority of what's here.
