Review: Released in 1970, this album stands as one of Melanie’s most significant albums. It features her third studio effort, highlighted by the Top Ten single 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)', which was inspired by the enthusiastic response to her Woodstock performance. The album also includes a touching cover of The Rolling Stones' 'Ruby Tuesday'. which reached the Top Ten in the UK. Melanie’s voice, both beautiful and emotive, remains one of the album’s greatest strengths, evoking deep feelings and occasionally giving listeners goosebumps. While the songwriting is rooted in the folk-pop style of the Woodstock era—sometimes quirky and occasionally flat—the lyrics are generally well-crafted and deeply sincere. Melanie’s ability to connect with her audience emotionally is undeniable and continues to resonate, showcasing a voice and style that have endured the test of time.

Review: Ahora, the new record by Melenas, is the polar opposite a third-album slump. Other bands might suffer from a lack of inspiration typical of such a critical creative moment, but this Spanish quartet reappears more invincible than ever, reassembled with a splendid palette of sounds raising the question: can you make jangle pop and garage rock with synthesizers? The likes of 'K2' and 'Bang' recall a resounding yes; in fact, the glorious throb of analogue keyboards, which dominate the album, do not betray Melenas' sound, and in fact propel it to an ascended pop heaven. Textured vintage synths, such as the Korg Delta or the Yamaha PSR-36, provide and maintain said immediacy, also imprinting a fascinating gamut by stretching the band's sonic identity, a transformation heard not only in the the crystalline pop of '1986', but the sombre, but moving undertones of 'Flor de la Frontera'.

Review: Gothenburg psych rockers Melody Fields debuted in 2018 with their self-titled album, and they've taken their time returning for a much-anticipated follow-up. Hot on the heels of 1901, they're back with a fresh idea to explore. As opening track 'Hallelujah' demonstrates, there's as certain Balearic-meets-Madchester influence creeping in to balance out the more trad psych rock stylings in the band, and it's no bad thing. This sense of late night dance energy carries through the album, but don't think they've shirked their rock foundations as collaborators appear from the likes of fellow Swedish heavyweights Goat as well as Fuzz Club Records' Al Lover.

Review: The long-awaited ninth full-length from legendary Japanese noise-rock duo Melt-Banana comes over a full decade on from 2013's exceptionally bizarre Fetch, marking their longest gap between albums yet. Known for combining the yelping, yapping, unhinged yet endearing vocals of Yasuko Onuki and the cybergrind guitar manipulations of the virtuosic Ichiro Agata, the pair expertly craft a schizoid car crash of genres, styles and sounds that would simply refuse to coalesce in lesser artists hands. Sugary bubblegum pop-punk is dropkicked by grindcore powerviolence, while industrial harsh noise engulfs hyperpop hooks before suffocating the debris in death metal malevolence. If this sounds horrible, impossible and bewildering, it only means two things: 1. You are sane. 2. You need to get some Melt-Banana into you. What better way to make sense of the chaos than by starting with the highly anticipated 3+5, then working backwards?

Review: MELTS' sophomore album Field Theory is a captivating exploration of interpersonal connections set against a backdrop of turbulent electronic psych-rock. Recorded live to tape and produced by Daniel Fox, the album delves into the intricate dynamics between individuals, drawing inspiration from the scientific concept of Field Theory. Through bulldozing motorik synth lines, layered guitars, primal percussion and Eoin Kenny's cavernous vocals, the band navigates the unseen forces that bind us together. Moving away from the macroscopic scale of their debut, Maelstrom, Field Theory delves into the intimate spaces between people, capturing the gravitational pull and light waves of human interaction. It's a hypnotic sonic journey that reminds us of the profound impact we have on each other's lives, resonating with the pulsating energy of our interconnected world.

Review: The trailblazing godfather of grunge, Buzz Osborne, is the sole constant member of Melvins, but he's not burned his bridges. He's invited back original drummer Mike Dillard (with who he founded the band in 1983), along with Void Maines and Ni Maîtres, for the third Melvins 1983 album, the previous two being Tres Cabrones (2013) and Working With God (2021). They're on the form of their life with the new album; it is ferocious and exhilarating. A standout is the lead single 'Thunderball', which is a celebration of the drums. You can hear Dillard hitting his snare with unparalleled force and nailing countless fills. Meanwhile, Osborne's melodic and heavy guitar playing strikes a perfect balance. Vocally, Osborne has the highest level of conviction; he truly belies his years. And with Black Sabbath calling it a day very soon, we need Melvins 1983 more than ever.

Review: Proto-grunge/sludge metal band Melvins laid down six compelling songs on their fourth album. Lice-All was a cohesive, tightly woven trip made up of three original tunes and three fine covers. Two of them were originally written by the man, the legend, Alice Cooper, and one is by nose rock gang Flipper. The record is said to have influenced bands such as Sunn O))) and Sleep over the years because of the way it layer sup heavy, droning guitars. First release back in 1992 and something of a cult classics, this reissue comes on red wax. Back then, the album was known as a set titled LP, but also under the name Lysol.

Review: Melvins' back catalogue is so strong that they could make a living just re-releasing the hell out of it. But Melvins' Buzz Osborne is a true punk and has such an unrelenting passion for music that they will never stop. The good thing is that he is under no illusions that he's great... Melvins in 2025 sound absolutely incredible, like Black Sabbath good. The line-up for this album takes things back to 1983 as the band's original drummer Mike Dillard makes a relatively rare appearance. It's only the third album he's made with Buzz Osborne, but absolutely is it gold when it happens. Dillard famously played in a short-lived pre Nirvana group with Kurt Cobain called Fecal Matter and there's certainly parallels to Nirvana's frantic approach to drums on this album. In terms of the rest of the music it's tuneful in a heavy way and it's that balance between the two that was the cornerstone of grunge and you can hear how Melvins became such a prevalent influence, playing a role in shaping the sound of Nirvana, Soundgarden and countless others.

Review: Considering how much most modern rockers don't talk about the Melvins, or Melvins as the Washington staters should technically be referred to, it's insane how much influence they had on the development of late-20th Century guitar sounds. Without Dale Crover, Buzz Osborne and Steven Shane McDonald, we're not sure there would have been grunge at all. Kicking but not screaming out of the Pacific Northwest in 1983 (at which time Mike Dillard was playing drums, later replaced by Crover), Houdini is their fifth studio album and by this point they'd more than found that legendary groove. Sludgy, thick, stompy and a little bit swampy, these are the riffs that inspire limbs to move of their own accord, setting the tone for a range of bands from Soundgarden and Nirvana to Tool, Sun O))) and Slipknot.

Review: The Melvins, known for their unapologetically experimental and abrasive sound, continue their legacy of sonic exploration with Tarantula Heart, set for release via Ipecac Recordings. The album, featuring a five-track lineup, including the sprawling 19-minute opener 'Pain Equals Funny, which displays the band's penchant for pushing the boundaries of conventional music. One of the album's defining features is the incorporation of dual drum parts, with longtime Melvins drummer Dale Crover teaming up with Roy for an impressive display of rhythmic complexity. This collaboration adds a new dimension to the Melvins' sound, further solidifying their reputation as pioneers of unconventional music. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Toshi Kasai, a longtime collaborator of the band, Tarantula Heart adds to the album's eclectic sonic palette. While The Melvins may never achieve mainstream success due to their avant-garde approach, this album stands by their unwavering commitment to artistic integrity and innovation, making it a must-listen for fans of boundary-pushing music everywhere.

Review: Memorial Waterslides marks the debut of Memorials, a collaboration between Verity Susman and Matthew Simms, formerly of Electrelane and Wire. This album is a surreal exploration of pop music, blending timeless songwriting with avant-garde sensibilities. Drawing from a wide range of influences from Broadcast and Portishead to Yo La Tengo, Memorials crafts a panoramic soundscape that feels both familiar and refreshingly new. The album's tracks are rich with imagery, evoking visions of a lost future and dreamlike past, each contributing to a swirling, cinematic atmosphere. Produced entirely by Susman and Simms, the record's sound was shaped by their reel-to-reel tape experiments, initially developed for their live performances. This playful and experimental approach results in a engaging mix of psychedelic rock, folk, and analog electronics. Following their successful 2023 soundtracks and a European tour with Stereolab, this a bold and imaginative journey into the unexpected, balancing the esoteric with the melodic.

Inspired by a 1970s psychotherapeutic music program used alongside LSD, he reimagines its classical compositions through electronic manipulation and using MIDI transformations of works by Strauss and Scriabi. He crafts new landscapes enriched by improvisations from Sam Prekop, Joseph Shabason and others and, as a psychotherapist and musician, he blends that expertise with musical creativity to shape a delicate trip across nine tracks that form a pathway to sonic healing.

Review: This is a solo album in the true sense of the word. It's comprised solely of Ava Mendoza's raw virtuoso avant rock guitar playing and - on two tracks - her passionate voice. The Brooklyn-via-Oakland musician is also known for being a skilled collaborator, with the her band Unnatural Ways having earned a stellar reputation, but limiting the spotlight to herself alone here serves to elevate the searching, personal themes on the record. Mendoza's is famed for her virtuoso guitar technique, with lightning-quick tapping, use of feedback and tremolo up there with the best in the business. This is a melange of classical, free jazz, blues and noise, to name a few. With technique this strong, it's no wonder she's been setting the New York experimental scene alight over the past few years. And with The Circular Train - merely her second solo album - we can hope there's many more to come.

Review: One of the most beautifully constructed and hugely acclaimed albums that was first released in the late 1990's is reissued here and is a reminder of a magnificent selection of music by Mercury Rev that the listener can never tire of. From the sweeping orchestral opening track Holes all the way through to the bouncing Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp this album provides songs the listener will fall in love with one by one and never turn their backs on. Following on from the brilliant shambolic early releases by the band, Deserter's Songs was made by the band as a swan song of sorts. They were a chaotic outfit at the time with a changing and insecure line-up that finally managed to settle themselves down after the release of this and to end up with a new beginning and an existence that still remains today. Hints of jazz, folk and 60s psychedelia can be found hidden modestly within these melancholic tracks that have influences that can commonly be heard in a lot of albums other bands have released since this first came to the public's attention. Sweet, sad and tender vocals provided by founder member Jonathan Donahue make this an easy listening lovable album that deserves to be in everyone's collection and it's one that once there is guaranteed remain for years to come.
Produced by original bass player and founding member Dave Fridmann this album was recorded around the same time and in the same building as The Flaming Lips legendary Soft Bulletin album (also produced by Fridmann) and albeit a slightly different sounding album to Deserters Songs marks that period of time in The Catskill Mountains (100 miles NW of New York) as one of the most musically rewarding moments of time during the 1990's.
Goddess on a Highway was first conceived by front man Jonathan Donahue almost a decade earlier whilst he was a member of The Flaming Lips and the song was resurrected from an early demo he dug up. The songs' chorus of 'I know...it ain't gonna last' was probably the only thing they got wrong with this masterpiece. This album sounds just as fresh as it did three decades ago. It's been said that Deserters Songs could be one of the best albums ever made. Who are we to argue?

Review: On their eighth album, Mercury Rev has tapped into the long and illustrious history of 'landscape music' - works inspired by specific environments, whether natural or man-made. In the case of Born Horses, it's the former, with the band situating themselves in the wilds of upstate New York and delivering a set they describe as "glistening psych-jazz, folk, baroque-ambient". In practice, this means immersive, enveloping songscapes that make use of a vast range of acoustic and electronic instruments, both sung and spoken vocals, and a lengthy list of influences and inspirations that apparently included Vangelis, songs from Broadway musicals, movie soundtracks, Chet Baker and Miles Davis. That it sounds nothing like any of them, and is very much its own atmospheric sound world, is testament to the long-serving band's endearing quality. A genuine delight and arguably their best album for some time.

Review: Mercury Rev's ninth album, Born Horses, emerges from the mystical landscapes of upstate New York where you will find a richly swelling, spellbound sound that blends organic and electronic elements. This album, a cascade of psych-jazz-folk-baroque-ambient exploration, taps into the spiritual and literal seam between the Catskills and Hudson Valley. The music flows with guitars, keys, brass, strings, woodwind, and drums converging to create an evocative soundscape. The voice of incantations and streams of consciousness adds depth to this sonic journey. Featuring founder members Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper, new permanent member Marion Genser, long-term ally Jesse Chandler, and guests Jeff Lipstein, Martin Keith, and Jim Burgess, Born Horses is a microcosm of their musical cosmology. Inspired by Broadway tunes, lonesome blues and the likes of Chet Baker and Miles Davis, the album feels both nostalgic and forward-looking. Dedicated to avant-garde artist Tony Conrad and Beat poet Robert Creeley, Born Horses is a vulnerable, reflective masterpiece, revealing the timeless essence within its intricate compositions.

Review: All Is Dream represents the mighty-yet-meek Mercury Rev at their pinnacle in terms of sonic development. Starting life as something of an experiment - a loose 'group' pulled together to score the student films of undergraduates at the University of Buffalo - by this point, 2001, they'd fully realised a jaw-dropping amalgamation of drone, weirdo pop, 1960s psyche throwback, shoegaze and rock & roll, rendering themselves pretty irresistible from where we were listening. Rightly acclaimed at the time for breadth, scope and incredible musicality, All Is Dream gave us 'Planet Caravan''s sublime fireside late-night jazz noodling, the folk-country acoustic of 'Streets of Laredo', the riotous symphony of 'A Drop In Time', and Bowie'-esque glam punch of 'You're My Queen'. Not to mention the heartbreak of 'Spiders & Flies'.

Review: The sixth album from West Coast psychedelic indie warriors Mercury Rev had already been enhanced with a host of extra B-sides and other goodies on a limited edition version when it first dropped in 2005, but this new version sees it further expanding, like the brain of an innocent teenager dropping acid for the first time. The original core 13 tracks are pretty good in their own right, obviously, from the close harmonies of 'Moving On' sounding like a frazzled, baked Beach Boys and the grandiose opener 'Secret For A Song' they show they're capable of achieving multiple moods and rollercoaster dynamics. Luxuriate in that and spoil yourself further with a further 12 flip tracks and outtakes, including guest vocal appearances from Bonnie Kate Anthony on the rather Nilsson-sounding 'I Never Had It So Good' and 'Tennessee Blues' and intriguing experiments like the spaced out synth-and-voice effort 'Good Day'.

Having shuttled between each locale for inordinate stretches of time, their latest record - the whimsically Christened slif slaf slof - nonetheless bridges these local poles. A breezy homage to the duo's shared ideal excesses - an interest in fantasy folk, costume, absurdist nature, surrealist scatting - the likes of 'Ceili', 'Tiny Gymnast' and 'Chaperone' are liable to solicit all manner of reactions in the listener, from on-the-spot bouncing to full-frontal gyrating. A sorely difficult to place record, merging motifs of indie, freak folk, and a decidedly DFA experimentalism.

Review: Swedish progressive groove metal legends and djent pioneers Meshuggah have always been in competition with themselves, nearly eclipsing all prior output with 2022's ninth full-length Immutable; a near 70-minute beastly display of ludicrously technical, poly rhythmic mayhem that served as both their lengthiest work to date as well as one of their most critically acclaimed, combining the unhinged aggression of 2008's ObZen with the post-prog hypnotism of their 2002 fan-favourite Nothing. The Indelible Edition offers a unique sonic enhancement and total remaster, redefining the album's depth and clarity, while including three bonus live tracks captured over the course of their 2023/2024 world tours. A very on-brand reissue from a collective known for their painstakingly detailed commitment to their vision and craft, whether you prefer the term "indelible" or "definitive", this is the version of Immutable the band finally appear content with sharing with their fanbase almost three years after initial release, almost like the Kanye West of progressive metal but without all of the antisemitism. Review: Jazz and punk's best legacies fuse together with this latest collaborative release between The Messthetics and James Brandon. Brandon is a jazz saxophonist and contemporary virtuoso from New York; meanwhile, the Messthetics consist of former Fugazi members - bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty with guitarist Anthony Pirog. Continuing the latter's pegging as a 'jazz punk jam', the focus here is on Brandon's novel sax playing, lent to the Messthetics' cathartic, ultimate punk-riffing focus. All is instrumental, as signalled on the lead single 'Emergence', which finds pure enjoyment in variation around a singular four-by-four bass loop. In the saxophonist's own words: "The Messthetics are friends at this point and collaborating with them over the years has now brought us to another high point of musical bonding and purely unapologetic energy!"

Review: The fourth full-length from thrash metal titans Metallica has gone on since its original 1988 release to be heralded as the band's most progressive, vicious and artistic statement. Marking their first work following the tragic passing of bassist Cliff Burton, the album has become controversial for its notable muting of (at the time) newcomer Jason Newsted's performance, yet it's immensely difficult to ignore a project that boasts some of the band's finest material, from the breakneck paced opener 'Blackened' to the grooving intensity of 'Harvester Of Sorrow' to the Johnny Got His Gun based psychological metal ballad 'One'. Ask a Metallica lifer what's truly the group's finest moment, and any worth their salt will point you towards ...And Justice For All each and every time.

Review: Metallica's self-titled fifth full-length, subsequently dubbed 'The Black Album', still serves as the controversial bridging point from their iconic run of four definitive thrash metal classics throughout the 80's, to their more sporadic and messy 90s output. For some, the inclusion of producer Bob Rock was a step too far into accessible territory as ten-minute instrumentals were abandoned, compositions were simplified, and the overall aggressive, grim edges showcased on the preceding classics Master Of Puppets and ...And Justice for All were somewhat sanded down to appeal to as large of an audience as possible. Make no mistake however, for every naysayer fan who opts to live in a fantasy where Metallica never continued into a second decade, there's still legions of adoring defenders who praise the balance the group would strike. It also doesn't hurt that the tracklist boasts literally some of the most well known and iconic cuts of their career, from the opening classic 'Enter Sandman' to the hefty groove of 'Sad But True', to more melodious fare like 'The Unforgiven' as well as the timeless ballad 'Nothing Else Matters'.

Review: The second and final instalment of thrash metal titans Metallica's Orion Music + More festival took place in Detroit, Michigan, on June 8th/9th 2013, and while the ordeal itself was a complete and utter financial disaster (hence there has yet to be a third event in the decade since), the line-up and performances across the weekend are still hyped and discussed to this day. Where the 4:30pm slot at the Vans Damage Inc Stage on the first day was originally allotted to a mysterious group named Dehaan, eagle-eyed fans connected the dots when remembering the name of actor Dane Dehaan who played the lead role in the Metallica concert film Through The Never. Then, as the "band's" logo was covered up with a hastily spray-painted "Metal Up Your Ass" banner (the original title to Metallica's 1982 debut full-length Kill 'Em All), attendees flocked in their droves just in time for a mid-afternoon shredfest of the iconic first album in its entirety, complete with the first ever performance of original bassist Cliff Burton's solo piece '(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth', by his replacement Robert Trujillo.

Widely regarded by fans as among of the band's finest shows, this tearout time capsule boasts a stellar setlist, including 'Seek & Destroy', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', 'Creeping Death', 'Battery', 'Master of Puppets' and 'The Thing That Should Not Be'. Unleashed to the world like a cageful of batwinged, sledgehammer wielding demons, it came right after their fourth LP release And Justice for All, which in turn set the Damaged Justice tour in motion; these menacers will always come back to haunt us through the tube amps.

Review: If you've seen Metallica live and in the flesh you'll appreciate how ferocious their shows are. It's not just the music that's loud, all aspects of the performance seems to hit like wrecking ball, raising the volume and intensity on each chord of every riff, drum-packed crescendo, and disorientating outro. And it's always been that way, as this reissued recording from one of their legendary shows proves. Captured in 1994, when the thrash metal pioneers played Woodstock, USA, Justice For All certainly lives up to the name of the outfit's classic 1988 LP, And Justice For All, which earned them their first Grammy nomination. It's pretty powerful, potent stuff, running through a number of the group's strongest tracks in a live context, which goes some way towards transporting us to the gig itself.

Review: "It rained like a cow pissing on a flat rock" Aerosmith's Steven Tyler apparently once said about Woodstock 94. His band's set, in the middle of the night, followed a monumental firework display at the end of Metallica's typically juggernaut show. A cataclysmic halt, picturing the scene in your mind now is almost biblical, moody storms setting in across a dangerously oversold, woefully organised weekender headlined by some of the most lightning-worthy rock bands on the planet. Short Cuts: The Best of Woodstock 94 is more than a concert recording, then. An abridged version of a marathon set, it's also a declaration of intent from metal titans who refused to be upstaged by the events unfolding around them. If there's ever an excuse to revisit Metallica on stage during the Black Album period, then surely it's with a backdrop of chaos and rage?

Review: Easily, the most controversial album in the Metallica back catalogue (with the exception of their Lou Reed collab LP Lulu), St. Anger was originally released in 2003, and marked yet another stylistic shift from the thrash metal titans. Following on from the hard rock-oriented sister albums Load and Re:Load in the mid-nineties, and their Garage Inc. covers collection, the band's eighth full-length would eschew virtuosic guitar solos (once a core staple of their sonic makeup) and their galloping style of frenetic riffage; replacing them with a more jagged style of composition and performance, leading to a unique sound falling somewhere between groove and alt-metal, yet much rawer than either of the two. Maligned by many, yet defended by a vocal section of the fanbase, there's something remarkably ballsy about the sheer abandon of their former selves on this record, while cuts such as the pummelling title-track, the southern-tinged bedlam of 'Frantic', and the chunky heft of 'My World', are all criminally slept on latter day contributions, forgotten to time for being the musical blacksheep of the Metallica discography. Also, if you ever deeply desired to hear drummer Lars Ulrich's utterly bizarre snare sound with pure audio fidelity, this lush orange vinyl 2xLP reissue has you covered.

Review: It isn't much of an understatement to say that thrash metal giants Metallica got off on the wrong creative foot entering into the 21st century, with 2003's controversial St. Anger still causing ample debate amongst the fanbase to this day. A five-year respite would see a re-channelling of their ethos and approach, resulting in 2008's exceptional return to form Death Magnetic, which finally saw the band crack the code of how to modernise their signature formula without losing sight of why it resonated with so many headbangers in the first place. Following another near-decade long gap, 2016 saw the arrival of Hardwired...To Self-Destruct; a project that furthered their sonic realignment with a near 80-minute opus of lengthy compositions, galloping riffage and anthemic hooks; harking authentically back to the progressive, controlled meanderings of their late 80s peek. If its predecessor was the re-charting of course, Hardwired can easily be accepted as the arrival at the shore of placated fan acceptance and fluid artistic rediscovery.

Review: Since their early heyday of mammoth pop hits, electronic-indie duo MGMT seemed to sound gradually more and more conflicted, unsure whether to continue producing stadium-scale hooks or follow their eccentricities. It seems, with their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age', that they've opted for the latter - sounding all the more confident and cohesive for it. 'Little Dark Age' sees the pair channeling their synthetic poppy psychedelia into their darkest, most serious and interesting songwriting yet. Anybody who panned 2013's self-titled album or 2010's 'Congratulations' should be pleasantly surprised by this return to form and new-found resolve. 'Little Dark Age' is a far cry from MGMT's definitive debut, but it's to the band's credit that exploring the more weird and wonderful corners of their pop-sensibilities has worked so well.

Review: Electric life-givers, MGMT, return for their fifth album Loss Of Life. Shockingly, it's been six years since 2018's Little Dark Age, in which the duo proved their capacity to evolve beyond the pale of their earliest electro-pop singles. Here, they adapt even further, enlisting the help of a well-selected cast of familiar faces - Christine & The Queens, Danger Mouse, Dave Fridmann, James Richardson, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Patrick Wimberly - all while declaring the project to be the yield of a calculated fusion: "20% adult contemporary" plus an unspecified amount of hero's journey subversion. From the standout single 'Dancing In Babylon' through to more esoteric twin sonic flames like 'Nothing To Declare' and 'Nothing Changes', this feels like an album dedicated to lost causes, overobsession with singular life trajectories, and moving through hard times.

Following its success and their 2022 album, After Dinner We Talk Dreams, the band expanded their horizons and headed out on tour across the US and Europe with artists like Gus Dapperton, Arlo Parks and Mitski. For their new album, Songs About You Specifically, Michelle retreated to a house in Ojai, California. Immersed in the serene desert surroundings, they found a new sense of solitude and intimacy and this shift is reflected in their music, which now embraces starry shoegaze, funk and 80s synth pop.

Review: When Mick Mars stepped back from touring with Motley Crue, it seemed like the end of an era. Really, it was the beginning of a new one. The legendary guitarist, whose riffs, solos and overall devastatingly heavy sound powered the L.A. icons through four decades of world-conquering, multi-platinum sonic mayhem is, as he demonstrates on his debut solo effort, still a serious force to be reckoned with. Only now, listeners are reckoning with more Mars than ever before. On the aptly-titled The Other Side of Mars, fans get that vision in its full, multifarious glory. To be sure, there are plenty of characteristically riff-tastic, tough-as-nails hard-rock anthems, but The Other Side of Mars also shows the 71-year-old guitarist heading into new and uncharted territory, tearing through caustic, modern metal ('Broken On The Inside"', conjuring gothic-tinged soundscapes ('Undone'), digging into anguished, slow-burning power balladry ('Killing Breed"' and unspooling bluesy, cinematic instrumental workouts (the album-closing guitar showcase, 'L.A. Noir'). The music throughout the ten-track collection, meanwhile, is otherwise studded with slide guitars, violins, violas, keyboards, glitchy freak-outs and all manner of sonic surprises.

Review: The traditional start to any review of any release from Micko Westmoreland - who started life as electronic wizard The Bowling Green, went solo and then formed the post-punk Micko & The Mellotronics project - is to state that he is best known for his acting role in 90s glam rock flick Velvet Goldmine. However, with tireless gigging, some memorable Ashley Jones-directed videos featuring various icons of alternative comedy, and now, with Le Vice Anglais, two excellent Mellotronics albums, that may no longer be the case. Expect spiky, English eccentric songwriting of the kind XTC or even Pulp might create, with Westmoreland's familiar obsessions - childhood and the effect it has on the rest of life, class and a general voyeuristic love of peculiarity - running rampant. Singles 'Autosexual' and 'What's In A Name' are speedy, jagged standouts, but the more reflective 'Holloway Road', in which he takes on the mantle of one of its more famous past residents, Joe Meek, is just as engaging, only in more subtle ways.

Review: Imagine a blend of Henry David Thoreau and Neil Young's 'After the Gold Rush', with a touch of Laurel Canyon introspection and a yearning for something just beyond reach and you're close to the essence of Midlake's breakthrough album. Wistful melodies and enigmatic narratives make for a sonic landscape pitched somewhere between 1871, 1971 and a realm entirely out of time. Tracks like 'Roscoe' and 'Bandits' shimmer with a romantic yearning for simpler times, while 'Head Home' and 'Van Occupanther' delve into the introspective musings of outcasts and dreamers. Its instrumentation is rich and varied, with dreamy horns, rolling guitars and plaintive pianos weaving a tapestry of sound that perfectly complements the elusive narratives. 'Young Bride', 'Branches', and 'In This Camp' showcase the band's vocal harmonies and their ability to craft melodies that linger long after the music fades.

Review: The Midnight's latest Heroes is a stark display of the musical evolution of the New York duo. A band that started as a synth heavy proposition, extensive touring across the globe (including a headline at London's Brixton Academy) and the desire not to repeat themselves in creative terms has led to the bigger vision and wider appeal of what their label calls "fully-realised, arena-worthy songs".
Heroes is the final part in a trilogy of albums that started with 2018's Kids, followed in 2020 by Monsters. "For me, Kids is self-knowledge, Monsters is self-love, and then Heroes is empathy," said singer Tyler Lyle. "I got into depth psychology and this idea of aetiology, the way a human forms. The world doesn't get better but we do. We grow into ourselves. We grow into our voice."
Still, Heroes remains definitely more a case of evolution than revolution - there's still more than a hint of the gorgeous synth sounds in evidence, but with a lyrical maturity and smartness that gives even its most pop moments an unexpected twist.

Review: Midwife's fourth studio album, No Depression In Heaven, emerged from the relentless motion of touring, with much of its material written in the back of vans over several years. The record delves into themes of grief, memory, and the tension between dreams and reality, all while maintaining a contemplative rock 'n' roll spirit. Madeline Johnston, the creative force behind Midwife, strips back the tough exterior of the heavy music scene, revealing a tender, transcendent core. Recorded at home in New Mexico between 2021 and 2023, Johnston embraced a raw, imperfect approach, prioritising the emotional essence of the music over polished production. The album includes collaborations with artists like Chris Adolf, Michael Stein, Ben Schurr, Tim Jordan, Angel Diaz, and Allison Lorenzen, adding depth to the project. No Depression In Heaven is heavily inspired by the transient moments of life on the road and the gritty reality of America's underbelly. Tracks like 'Vanessa,' a love song to Johnston's dying van, and 'Killdozer,' which tells the story of Marvin Heemeyer's infamous rampage, embody the album's themes. The project reflects Johnston's existential journey as she navigates loss and the fleeting nature of life, all while solidifying her role as a voice within the underground music community.

In the wake of several members' introduction to Sufism, the band took a spiritual turn, and this rare recording from Glastonbury 1971 is a delicious highlight of that era, in turn an offshoot of the compilation album of the same name. Now reissued after being sifted from an original stash of tapes, Trading Places have successfully reignited the memory of this hitherto unsung project.

In all seriousness though, it's unfiltered, lo-fi, unpretentious pop-punk of the rawest and realest variety, reissued to rediscover nostalgia anthems such as 'Lozin' Must', which trudges along with the same charm of early day Blink-182 or Green Day.

Review: French-British singer-songwriter and performance artist Lucy Sissy Miller opens Pre Country with noises that don't feel remotely close to country - more Imogen Heap than Patsy Cline. But as the record finds its gear, reference are changed through a moody and mysterious veil of latter-day Patti Smith and the oeuvre of Laurie Anderson. A meditation on Americana which recognises its folk roots but isn't afraid to embrace the high tech of today, either. Pieced together using journal notes, poems, voice memos, found and collected, manipulated and obscured sounds, it's a reflective and quiet, tender kind of place to find yourself - a record that asks for patience and rewards you with increasing immersion. "It'a an album about memories and how we stitch up these moments, making them movie-like to make sense of these experiences," says Miller. We'll leave it at that.

Review: Mind Maintenance is certainly an appropriate name for this duo. Usually grounded in jazz, here bassist Joshua Abrams and drummer Chad Taylor look far beyond the world of cool cats and late night bars, casting their gaze on more organic and earthy tones. Picking up a guimba - perhaps better known to some as the guitar-ish sintir regularly heard in Moroccan music - and mbira, a family of Zimbabwean percussive instruments, the tones are, unsurprisingly, transportive.

Through highly complex but minimalistic arrangements we are taken to places that can only really be described as 'not here'. The repetitive loops of padded beats and chimed melodies seem to go straight for the mind's eye, boring ever deeper into our subconscious and holding on tight once there. Close your eyes and the world in front of you quickly fades, leaving nothing but hypnotic tones that deserve to be heard outside, beneath the stars, by the fire.

Review: Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey is a pivotal release in both the band's discography and the evolution of industrial music. This genre-defining album marked their shift from synthpop to industrial metal, characterised by distorted guitars, pounding beats, and aggressive, sample-rich compositions. The deluxe edition enhances this landmark with iconic tracks like 'Stigmata', 'The Missing;, and the haunting title track, along with exclusive remixes and extended cuts. Tracks like 'The Missing' and 'Deity' highlight the album's metal edge, blending thrash aggression with industrial elements. 'Golden Dawn' introduces a dark, ritualistic tone with samples from occult sources, showcasing Ministry's skill in merging industrial and post-industrial aesthetics. Songs like 'Destruction' and 'Hizbollah' expand the sonic palette with chaotic percussion and Middle Eastern influences. The title track, despite its controversial samples, reinforces the band's anti-fascist stance with its militaristic atmosphere. Closing with 'Abortive', the album offers a reflective end to its intense journey. The Land of Rape and Honey stands as a crucial bridge between early industrial soundscapes and the metal-influenced industrial of the 90s.

Review: The Minneapolis Uranium Club Band's Infants Under The Bulb album is an engaging journey through unbridled punk creativity and raw guitar energy. Released amidst their hometown's vibrant underground scene, the album defies categorisation in the way it blends elements of punk, post-punk and experimental rock. With relentless rhythms, angular guitar riffs and cryptic lyrics, each track unfolds in heavy and arresting fashion and the band's unconventional approach and uncompromising attitude challenge listeners to embrace the unconventional throughout this most visceral of albums.

Review: Colombian producer and singer Ela Minus expands her sound on this new album, which is a bold follow-up to her 2020 debut Acts of Rebellion. While her first long player felt like an intimate late-night club reverie, this sophomore effort is introspective yet vast while revealing more of Ela as both an artist and person. It's an album about becoming and exploring self-discovery, resilience and the path forward after breaking. Across ten terrific tracks that have been mixed by Marta Salogni and mastered by Heba Kadry, Ela blends pop accessibility with experimental finesse while weaving radiant choruses into imaginative, intricate sonics. A great work that shows evolution while not abandoning her signature sounds.

Review: Released in the first year of the pandemic, Ela Minus' first major breakthrough came in 2020, when Domino put out her debut record, Acts of Rebellion. Evidently the label was happy with the results, which saw the young Colombian electronic star carve out a corner of the global scene for herself. Five years on and we're back with the follow up. Reassuringly, everything and nothing has changed. Improvised jazz meets techno meets schoolyard Brat pop, trance, EDM and synth. Citing Kraftwerk as one of her key influences, you can also hear plenty of Daft Punk in here, and a little Charli XCX to boot. All of which might sound a little opportunistic, if she didn't radiate authenticity and already have a decade-long history of putting out futuristic and fun beats.

Review: Originally Glenn Danzig and co’s horror-themed punk band, the Misfits, reissue their second record, Earth A.D. / Wolfs Blood. First released in December 1983, this howling punk nocturne was actually the last to feature Danzig on vocals, who issued the record on his Plan 9 label only two months after his last concert with the band, meaning this record would’ve coincided with his ultimate split from them. With just nine tracks of tearout harcore horror punk, including ‘Queen Wasp’, ‘Devilock’, ‘Demonomania’, ‘We Bite’ and - wait for it - ‘Bloodfeast’ (but sadly lacking the former cassette exclusive 'Mommy, Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight?’) this original label reissue stays true to the vinyl version’s tracklist while delivering us one raised heck of a fright.

Review: Like Ronseal serving up exactly what it says on the tin, this Studio Outtakes 1978-1979 compilation from iconic horror punks Misfits offers some of the most sought after/presumed lost/rarest of the rare demos from their seminal yet steeped in intrigue early days. Boasting raw undubbed outtakes as well as OG demos from the now infamous Static Age sessions (the band's first fully recorded album that technically ranks as their third seeing as it wasn't officially released until 1996) and the much adored Horror Business 7", this is a must have collectible for any and all devout Crimson Ghost alumni, complete with jagged, primitive yet enlightening early versions of quintessential cuts such as 'Hollywood Babylon', 'Last Caress', 'Who Killed Marilyn?', 'Where Eagles Dare', and the unholiest of grails deep within the fanbase; the instrumental version of 'Hybrid Moments'.

Review: The 1971 classic album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, Blue is widely thought by many music lovers to be one of the best albums of all time. Already well into her career by the time of its release - it's her fourth album - it was certainly Mitchell's best yet, reflecting a period in her life where she took a break from touring and live performing to focus on creation. Its confessional and poetic lyrics, not to mention the distinctively groggy yet idyllic guitar and piano playing on songs like 'All I Want', 'River', 'A Case Of You', heard Mitchell encapsulate the various milestones, Renaissances and turning points of the contemporary rock landscape of the 1970s, into a singular LP.
