Bellhead
Bellhead (12")
Cat: DFA 2713. Rel: 27 Dec 24
Bellhead (5:37)
Optimo (Optimo instrumental mix) (5:16)
Review: DFA presents a special 12" release from New York's no wave pioneers, Liquid Liquid, paying tribute to the band's profound influence on the label. This double A-side features revitalized versions of their iconic tracks. The first side offers a dynamic rendition of 'Bellhead,' recorded by James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy in 2004. It's an intense percussive journey, overflowing with marimba, drums, and an array of bells, transforming the original's laid-back groove into a vibrant, energetic workout. On the flip side, we have an unreleased version of 'Optimo,' re-recorded by Liquid Liquid in 2008 and then remixed by Glasgow's Optimo (Espacio), the duo named in homage to the track.

Review: If indie-rock did fantasy football then this is a championship-winning supergroup that hipsters would have wet dreams about. Minnesota slowcore sorts Low joined forces with Aussie meditative atypical post-rock group Dirty Three for a one-off EP. That's Dirty Three of Warren Ellis fame (the beardy Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds band member). There were tight parameters to encourage experimentation: The EP, originally released in 2001, was part of the Fishtank sessions where artists handpicked by the Konkurrent label make a record in Amsterdam in only two days.
The gamble seemingly paid off. It's remarkable that they sound as if they've been living out of each other's pockets for years, with seamless musical understanding, despite the short amount of time they were given. There's tear-jerking tenderness in hearing Mimi Parker's voice on the opening track, 'I Hear Goodnight'. Parker founded Low along with her husband Alan Spearhawk, but sadly passed away in 2022. Meanwhile, other highlights include a superb slow-motion cover of Neil Young's 'Down By The River', which doesn't feel too constrained by the original and showcases the group's experimental tendencies. The vocal take here makes you wish for an entire album of them performing Neil Young covers. Elsewhere, 'When I Called Upon Your Seed' is an Americana masterpiece with gorgeous droning instrumentals freckled with guitar plucking and long-held vocal notes.
Something that appears to have made this session a success is the uncomplicatedness of the recording, which stays away from adding too many lines of instrumentation, and gives the spotlight to the individual talent of people who can truly play. The rewards are countless, but it would be amiss to not note Warren Ellis' violin performance throughout the record. That alone is enough to make you wish you persevered and kept up with those violin lessons as a kid. Enough listens to this, though, and perhaps you'll think it's not too late to go back. Truly inspiring stuff.

Review: To say Philippe Doray and his Asociaux Associes finished the 1970s with creative fervour would be an understatement. First we had 1976's Ramasse-Miettes Nucleaires, then two years after that there was the equally potent Nouveaux Modes Industriels. Both were heralded as ahead of their time, at the time, bringing together strange, otherworldly pop, spacey prog, prototypes of Krautrock and impassioned poetry. Le Composant Compositeur followed, and in their own words marked the beginning of a new era in the 'Antisocial Associates' project (to use the English translation). It's a marvellous addition to the collection, too, a series of sharp, edgy, mutant pop tracks, weirdo brass experimentation, compressed electro, dubby ideas, and twisted, acid-spiked fairground themes.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Not just a clever name, At Issue takes its title from the Brooklyn venue this incredible album was recorded in, namely Issue Project Room. For those who don't recognise the musicians involved, Kim Gordon is an icon of discordant, white noise-y rock 'n' roll, best known as a member of Sonic Youth - one of the most iconic guitar acts to emerge in the 1980s.

That might be a red herring in this context, though, because at the New York address in question Gordon was joined by legendary blues minimalist maestro, Loren Connors. The result is a hybrid work that's patient, sophisticated, utterly mesmerising and - for want of a better, less fawning word - close to perfection. Profoundly moving, and masterfully arranged, we guarantee this is one for the lifetime honours list.

Review: Mercy is a collaborative work between the late great Lee "Scratch" Perry (during his post-Black Ark Studios era), Peter Harris and Fritz Catlin, the drummer from the industrial funk dub act 23 Skidoo. What they cook up is unashamedly experimental outsider works that collide mad mixing desk trickery, Perry's trademark vocal mutterings and plenty of occult sound designs. Melodies are smeared and smudged, rhythms are drunk and off balance and moods range from balmy to bonkers, often within the same damn track. A maverick collage, for sure.

Review: The sixth full-length from Richmond, Virginia groove metal beasts Lamb Of God (seventh if you count the self-titled Burn The Priest debut) arrived in 2012, three long years removed from 2009's raw cementing of their legacy on Wrath. Reuniting with producer Josh Wilbur, the resulting Resolution would simultaneously boast some of the heaviest yet most progressive output from the band to date, with cuts such as album highlight 'Ghost Walking' exuding melancholic acoustic passages marking a subdued embracing of more leftfield influences. Leave no doubt, however, these solitary ebbs give way to avalanche flows of bombastic grooves and heaving riffage on severely pummelling bangers such as 'Desolation' and 'Barbarosa', resulting in yet another reliably venomous yet sonically braver effort from the metallic stalwarts.

Review: Critics talk of 'timelessness' like it's going out of fashion, but when it comes to Irish folk the word carries more clout. Lankum, a four piece contemporary outfit born from the ever-thriving Dublin scene and a duo project, Lynched (named after the band's two founding brothers, Ian and Daragh Lych), are a perfect example of what we're talking about. Live In Dublin is a great reference point to understand this. If ever there were sounds made to be experienced IRL then it might be the noises these multi-instrumentalists evidently love to make. Simultaneously capable of transporting us to peaty moorlands of the past, while hitting nail on head as to where we are today, and presenting bold visions of how sounds might develop tomorrow, from rousing crescendos to pin-drop-quiet, this is relentlessly captivating stuff.

Review: The box set Huge, Large and Electric: Hugo Largo 1984-1991 offers a deep dive into the experimental art-rock quartet's full discography, bringing together studio albums, rarities and live recordings. Emerging from New York's 1980s No Wave scene, Hugo Largo stood out with their unorthodox lineup of two bass guitars, violin and powerhouse vocalist Mimi Goese, creating a sound that blended dream pop, ambient and avant-rock. Their debut album, Drum (produced by Michael Stipe), set the tone with eerie, minimalist arrangements and haunting vocals. Tracks like 'Eskimo Song' and 'Second Skin' became standout examples of their melancholic yet intense energy. Goese's theatrical voice, often described as a powerful instrument of its own, added a sense of danger to their art-rock atmosphere. On their second album, Mettle, Hugo Largo took their avant-garde roots and added more pop sensibility without sacrificing originality. Songs like 'Turtle Song' and 'Hot Day' introduced playful tension, showing Goese's vocal range and the band's willingness to experiment. This box set, lovingly curated by Missing Piece, revives a pivotal chapter in American post-punk history.

Review: For nearly a decade, this unique band has been carving out a unique underground sound, and Tracing The Sand By The Pool finds them at their most focused yet. Recorded entirely by the band, this twelve-track album is a collection of sharp, direct hits with no room for filler. Kicking off with 'Within', a track that balances Kiwi brightness with moments of near-chaos, the album showcases Chris Gunn's intricate guitar work, both melodic and brash. The band’s cover of The Hangmen’s ‘I'm Gonna Love You’ turns menace into a hopeful ballad, while guest appearances from Miranda Soileau-Pratt (The Spatulas) and Shelby Jacobson (The Tube Alloys) add depth. 'Snail On The Map' brings a touch of flower power with its dreamy pop, and 'Speak To Us In Feathers' layers cascading guitars and ethereal breaks. Throughout, the album blends 60s psych and distorted noise, offering a thrilling, unpredictable journey with every track. Boundless and full of surprises, this is The Lavender Flu's most exciting release to date.

The bitch is well and truly back as the band have so succinctly put and offer a uniquely heavy yet still endlessly entertaining reimagining of the cheesiest of metal eras.

Review: The highly anticipated debut full-length from Oakland, California esoteric doomgazers Leaving melds classic psychedelic proto-doom metal with the swelling bombast and mercurial pace of post-rock and shoegaze. Since forming in 2021, the collective made up of seasoned veterans in their own realms from acts such as Graves At Sea, Lycus, Noothgrush, Amber Asylum and Funerary, have been hard at work crafting the type of menacing melancholy popularised by modern grungegaze peers in Whirr, Cloakroom or Nothing, yet fused to the blues-laden macabre retro doom of Reverend Bizarre and Saint Vitus. Delving into harrowing moments of desolation and the war with the darkness within ourselves, emboldened by meandering, lengthy dirges that offer shimmering sonics and triumphant crescendos both warming and oppressive, Liminal is the type of insidious opus that requires repeat attentive listens before utterly revealing itself.

Review: The debut LP from Oakland, California based collective Leaving conjures the spirit of retro, esoteric doom metal yet repurposed for ethereal, melancholic shoegazing. Formed in 2021, and made up of a plethora of seasoned musicians who've previously cut their teeth in the likes of Noothgrush, Amber Asylum, Graves At Sea, Lycus, and Funerary, the group marry the aggressive post-rock shoegaze of modern peers in Nothing and Whirr, with the oppressive meandering doom of Saint Vitus or Reverend Bizarre. Gloomy, lengthy, dirges of nocturnal depravation, unpacking feelings of isolation, desolation and the looming presence of shadows within our own psyche; a towering debut of cavernous composition, refracted riffage and sonic malaise.

Review: The solo project of Swedish musician Sofie Herner, Leda is an experimental project mainly dedicated to roomy, claustrophobic freakouts, fashioned out of a distinctive form of guitar playing, among other tinkerings. Now a well-known name in the Gothenburg scene, Herner's proximity to her local DIY underground is abundantly clear. It feels just as reflective in the sound of her latest project here, Neuter, which sounds like a gargantuan woodwork project subsuming a collective consciousness. Building off the natural footprints trailed by not only her former output, but also her involvement in bands like Neutral and Enhet For Fri Musik, this LP comprises nine tracks of minimal guitar loops, layered oppressively with doomy vocals, all-encompassing percussion, and other oddball instruments. Movements one through nine guide us through uniquely dour worlds, all with the utmost creep factor.

Review: Long serving Anglo-Dutch masters of psychedelic and experimental soundscapes - formed in London in 1980 but who relocated, we couldn't possibly think why, to Amsterdam four years - Legendary Pink Dots return with an album that explores the anxieties and complexities of our increasingly digital world. Tracks like 'So Lonely In Heaven' and 'The Sound of the Bell' set the tone with their haunting melodies and atmospheric textures, while 'Dr. Bliss '25' and 'Sleight of Hand' delve into darker, more experimental territories. The album's lyrical themes explore the seductive nature of technology and the potential for isolation and alienation in a hyper-connected world. 'Choose Premium : First Prize' and 'Darkest Knight' offer a glimpse into the seductive promises of the digital realm, while 'Cold Comfort' and 'Wired High : Too Far To Fall' explore the darker side of technological dependence. Psychedelic soundscapes, introspective lyrics and experimental arrangements - that'll be acid-tinged business very much as usual, then.

Newly, radically reimagined remixes created from John Lennon's classic song, Mind Games. These nine Meditation Mixes craft their own space while maintaining firm and authentic roots in John Lennon's original recording. Each have been radically altered, slowed down and extended, ranging from five to ten to over 33 minutes, allowing the soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing deep listening experience. Four tracks are presented as binaural versions which each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Named 'Mind', 'Space', 'Spirit' and 'Love', these exploit the response of the ear to left and right frequencies, which constructively combine to produce a new frequency, which in turn, as they say, activates beneficial brain patterns. Produced by Sean Lennon, these contemporary Lennon versions aim to positively impact the contemporary anxiety-racked listener, whose appetite for deep listening has only understandably increased in recent years.

Review: Temporal Drift drop the never-before-heard master tapes from Japanese cult legends Les Rallizes Denudes' legendary second comeback gig in 1993, after an unexpected slew of CD albums dropped in 1991. The band hadn't performed since the 80s, and came back for blood. Eyewitness accounts of the gig said that the abrasive squall of Takashi Mizutani and Katsuhiko Ishii's guitars that night had concertgoers pacing for the lobby to seek respite from the sonic furnace. After 30 years in storage, the multi-tracked recordings from the performance fell into the hands of former band member Makoto Kubota, who lovingly remastered them to give listeners a sense of the transcendental roar which The Rallizes unleashed that night. Highlights include the braindead rockabilly shuffle of 'Eternally now', and the steady, diesel-powered chug of 'Darkness Returns 2', which, like all other tracks on the album, is eventually pierced by the screeching peal of Mizutani's telecaster, which eats the whole mix up in true Rallizes style. A much mythologised live performance by a much mythologised band. Essential!

Five tracks' worth of sonic sacred geometry are spread across two reissued sides; lo-fi garage crunchouts, noise truncations and cathartic let-looses come in the form of 'Field Of Artificial Flowers' and 'Deeper Than The Night' on the A, while the B-side delivers two deeper, more whacked-out, increasingly insane outsider hells, 'Memory Is Distant' and 'Field Of Artificial Flowers' (a name used twice, in true Denudes fashion).

Review: Japanese psych rock icons Les Rallizes Denudes originally formed in 1967, led by enigmatic frontman Takashi Mizutani and famed for their fearless embrace of distortion as a vital component of their sound. Through the decades the band went through many iterations and pauses, but they made a vital comeback in 1993 after five years of silence. Baus '93 captures the band in full flight at Baus Theatre in Tokyo, with Mizutani joined by Katsuhiko Ishii on guitar, Kiyohiro Takada on bass and Toshiro Mimaki on drums. Restored from original multitrack tapes and audience sources, it's a visceral document of the band's abrasive, hard-rocking sound captured here on red velvet double vinyl.

The addition of guitarist Fujio Yamaguchi brought a bluesy edge, creating a dense, dissonant soundscape that feels both lethargic and hypnotic. This release marks a significant moment in the band's history, showcasing a unique lineup that left a lasting impact on fans. The tight rhythm section provides a solid foundation for the intense interplay between Mizutani and Fujio, resulting in a surreal and ethereal sonic experience. Makoto Kubota's meticulous mixing and mastering ensure that this performance is preserved in its raw, psychedelic glory, making the world of Les Rallizes Denudes an intriguing piece of Japanese music history.

Review: One of the most compelling avant garde groups to emerge from the UK in years, Lice's second album shows them thrillingly darting between minimalism, rock, techno and more. It's tense, paranoiac, dramatic affair throughout and sounds thoroughly artful without a hint of pastiche. Curiously, this is a concept album expressed through three movements. The first traces a child's socialisation and their later awareness of the process and its limitations. The second is about them reevaluating fundamental concepts including money, time, nationhood and language. The third is about them embracing these new ideas and the increased sense of agency they receive. It's advanced creativity for a band merely on their second album and shows immense promise for them to follow in the footsteps of experimental greats such as Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart whilst maintaining a sense of British rock.

Review: Set to tear the (proverbial) roof off of Gunnersbury Park this August alongside the newly rejuvenated Pendulum, nu-metal icons Limp Bizkit have reached a peak in their career where their previously maligned nu-metal hip-hop hybrid has become a nostalgia source for hundreds of thousands fans. What better preparation for the upcoming event than this double LP greatest hits collection that runs through a myriad of the band's most essential bangers. From the breakout (no pun intended) singles 'Break Stuff' and 'Nookie' which put Significant Other on the map and in CD collections, to the endless string of hits from ignorant masterwork Chocolate Starfish & The Hot Dog Flavored Water, such as 'My Generation', 'Rollin'', 'My Way' and the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack stomper 'Take A Look Around', all the way up to the much underrated 'Eat You Alive' and The Who cover 'Behind Blue Eyes' from the unfairly forgotten Results May Vary, this is an ideal selection for both passive listeners and diehard fans. And yes, it obviously includes the George Michael cover of 'Faith'.

Review: Often considered to be one of, if not, the most iconic performances from nu-metal legends Limp Bizkit (not including the riots of Woodstock 1999), their set at the Rock im Park festival in Nuremberg, Germany on 1st June 2001 featured the band touring their multi-platinum selling career highpoint Chocolate Starfish & The Hotdog Flavoured Water. Boasting, what in retrospect, seems like a greatest hits collection featuring cuts such as 'Hot Dog', 'My Generation', 'My Way', 'Take A Look Around', and 'Rollin'', while also offering up older essential bangers like 'Nookie' and 'Break Stuff', ample room is still provided not only for their iconic rendition of George Michael's 'Faith' but a surprise cover of Metallica's 'Master Of Puppets'. A time capsule live performance from one of the most maligned yet smugly successful acts to ever throw out the metal, rock and hip-hop rule books, this enigmatic set is the stuff of legend, with frontman Fred Durst's ensuing ego-trip backed by the band's venomously grooving execution at every turn.

Review: Following the tragic passing of frontman Chester Bennington in 2017, many presumed the natural end of nu-metal turned alt rock giants Linkin Park. Rattling their fanbase with news of a resurgence with Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong, as well as new drummer Colin Brittain (replacing Rob Bourdain who opted not to join the reunion), From Zero nods to the band's original moniker of Xero while also ushering in this new era for the group, whereas sonically, the band do their best to simultaneously pay credence to their heavier origins whilst naturally progressing towards their newfound vision. Their first full-length since 2017's pop-oriented One More Light may come as a shock to many devout to the Bennington era, but the earnestness in composition sees a retrospective embracing of nu-metal motifs yet modified and extrapolated to embolden this entirely new compositional framework. Attempting to compare to prior releases is naturally par for the course yet won't do much to alter this new musical trajectory, as From Zero swells with the breath of an entirely fresh project that owes humble countenance to the Linkin Park of yesteryear. At 11 tracks clocking on at just over a half-hour, the mission statement is one of succinct brevity and urgency, but whether it truly fills the Bennington shaped void is down to each unique set of ears.

Review: The Certified 12xPlatinum Grammy Award winning seminal debut album from nu-metal heavyweights Linkin Park is set to receive a brand-new limited reissue (along with 2003's Meteora and 2007's Minutes to Midnight) on what has been dubbed the "One Step" remasters. These high-quality audiophile pressings launch the new "Because Sound Matters One-Step" series, with each release providing details of the audio sourcing process; all housed in newly designed slipcases. Pressed on 180-gram black vinyl, numbered and limited to 3,000 copies, mark our words when we say you've never heard the genre-defining hits such as 'One Step Closer', 'Papercut', 'Crawling', or, 'In The End', with this level of clarity and fidelity, while the band's effortless fusion of metal, hip-hop, alternative rock and turntable wizardry, emboldened by the legendary production guru Terry Date, has rarely radiated such towering sonic warmth. Above all, the vulnerable lyricism and cathartic cadence of late, great lead vocalist Chester Bennington looms large and poignant.

Co-produced with Rick Rubin, this 2007 release blends alternative rock, hip-hop and political insights, evident in tracks like 'What I've Done' and 'Hands Held High' and a collision of dynamic experimentation with aggressive rock and infectious melodies in 'Bleed It Out.' A commercial and critical success, Minutes to Midnight further broadened Linkin Park's appeal and impact and now vinyl-loving Park fans have a chance add it to their collections.

Review: Originally released in 2014 and now celebrating its ten year anniversary, The Hunting Party served as the sixth full-length from nu-metal turned alt rock heavyweights Linkin Park. Marking their first full-length since 2003's Meteora to not be produced by the iconic Rick Rubin (with members Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson opting to handle production duties inhouse), the material bore a notable turn from their more accessible electronic-tinged U2-esque stadium rock and saw a rediscovery and embracing of their more aggressive nu-metal roots. Certified platinum and praised for their ability to still replicate their feral early days, the album is also noted for being the band's first LP to feature guest musicians such as Page Hamilton of Helmet, Daron Malakian of System of a Down, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, and hip-hop artist Rakim. This new anniversary edition comes as side-4 etched 2xLP pressed on aquatic translucent blue vinyl.

Review: There are few nu-metal bands from the formative late 90s/early 00s scene who achieved the monumental crossover appeal of Linkin Park. From their turntable spinning, frenetic rap-metal beginnings on 2000's global breakout Hybrid Theory, to the refined maturation of their formula on 2003's career-height Meteora, to their Jay-Z collaborative album Collision Course to the shedding of skin and rebranding as a genre-less alternative rock entity on 2007's Minutes To Midnight; as popular and accessible as they were, the band clearly constantly strived for sonic progression. Papercuts collects the highest charting singles from the group over two decades, with the most recent contribution being the previously unreleased 'Friendly Fire' recorded during the sessions for 2017's One More Light, which ultimately serves as the final new piece of recording from the band and vocalist Chester Bennington who would tragically take his own life later that same year. Ignoring the standard sequencing of a greatest hits which often lists the tracks in chronologically released order, here the cuts are compiled to sonically complement each other and reflect the band's ethos rather than a single line commercial pattern. Here is why the anthemic double platinum 'In The End' is juxtaposed with the minimalist rap-rock of MTM banger 'Bleed It Out', or why the previously unreleased fan favourite demo 'QWERTY' lands right between the U2 indebted 'What I've Done' and the original breakout single that started it all 'One Step Closer'.

Review: It's been seven years since the tragic passing of Chester Bennington and the abrupt end of nu-metal legends Linkin Park, while their legacy remains praised and intact by avid fans. Papercuts offers up a career-spanning greatest hits collection, yet rather than sequencing each bundle of tracks chronologically in terms of specific album release, the cuts are mixed with the design of flowing as naturally as possible, with the anthemic 'Faint' from 2003's Meteora rubbing shoulders with their iconic Jay-Z Collision Course collab 'Numb/Encore'. Elsewhere, 'One Step Closer'; the breakout single from 2000's genre-defining debut LP Hybrid Theory is followed directly by 'New Divide', which served as the lead single from the Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen soundtrack. From their rap-metal beginnings to their signature style of nu/alt-metal to the their calmer accessible later era, this compilation delivers a succinct yet sprawling distillation of Linkin Park's most vital contributions to the several dynamic scenes they helped to elevate.

Review: .It seems like half a lifetime ago that Linkin Park exploded from the underground nu-metal scene into the mainstream conscious with their debut album, Hybrid Theory. In actual fact, that was only the year 2000, a time when the sub genre itself was dominating charts and day time radio. As with many bands, though, it would be the difficult second with which they cemented their status as key proponents of the scene. Unleashing angsty lyrics, disarmingly addictive hooks and arrangements born out of hip-hop as much as rock, Meteora, LP number two, produced hits like 'Faint', 'Numb', and 'Somewhere I Belong'. Tracks that defined an era, in these circles at least, Lost Demos sees the group collate a wealth of material from that time - much of it previously unreleased - for an essential retrospective.

Review: With the tragic, untimely passing of lead vocalist Chester Bennington in 2017, it naturally appeared to be the end for nu-metal/alt rock juggernauts Linkin Park, until recently shocking their fans with the confirmed news that Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong would be taking Bennington's place, while new drummer Colin Brittain would step in to replace Rob Bourdain who decided not to join the reformation. Serving as the follow up to 2017's pop focused One More Light, the band's upcoming eight full-length LP From Zero takes its title from their original early day name Xero whilst highlighting this newly defined creative origin the members have found themselves cornered into, bearing clear signs of a desire to celebrate their nu-metal beginnings without undoing the decades worth of progression they have accomplished since. With 11 tracks and just over a half-hour runtime, it's evident the project appears to be prioritising brevity and a succinct introduction to this new era without losing site of what sonically drew their legions of fans to them in the first place. It's a brave, delicate time for Linkin Park with From Zero championed as the heralding of this new chapter, aiming to hopefully bridge and appease listeners from all spectrums of their back catalogue.

Review: It's difficult to describe to those too young to have been there and to those too old to give a toss, just how rife the anticipation was for the sophomore full-length from nu-metal giants Linkin Park following on from the global success of their multi-platinum selling debut album Hybrid Theory in 2000. Following what felt like an eternal three years, both shortened and lengthened by the bloated remix album Reanimation, 2003's Meteora was nothing short of lightning striking in the same place twice. Debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200, certified 8xPlatinium and currently ranked as the 8th highest selling album of the 21st century, to call the band's second album a success seems like a very muted understatement when anthems such as 'Somewhere I Belong', 'Faint', and, 'Numb' are still some of the highest charting and most world-renowned metal singles to ever blare out across the airwaves. While musically drifting further away from their nu-metal beginnings with each subsequent project, both Meteora and its predecessor belong to a subset of genre-defining classics that appear to become more embraced and less maligned with age, as the nu-metal subgenre becomes less of a dirty word. It also goes without saying that the incomparable vocal presence of late frontman Chester Bennington as well as his vulnerable and cathartic lyricism take on a far more bleak and oppressive shade with the folly of hindsight.

Review: Living Colour's Time's Up (1990) stands as a powerful sophomore effort that remains deeply relevant. Following the success of Vivid (1988), the band sought to expand their funk rock sound while addressing pressing social issues. The result is an album both musically impressive and lyrically poignant. The title track, 'Time's Up,' showcases Corey Glover's soaring vocals, delivering urgent messages about environmental and social decay. Tracks like 'History Lesson' and 'Pride' tackle the African-American experience, using samples and lyrics to confront historical injustices and cultural appropriation. 'Type' and 'New Jack Theme' examine stereotypes and the glamourisation of drug dealing, respectively, while 'Someone Like You' reflects on lost innocence in urban landscapes. Musically, the album defies genre constraints, blending hardcore, jazz, soul, and hip-hop elements. 'Love Rears Its Ugly Head' stands out with its jazz blues vibe, while 'Elvis is Dead' features a guest appearance by Little Richard, critiquing the idolisation of Elvis Presley. The album's hopeful moments, such as 'Solace of You' and 'This Is The Life,' urge listeners to embrace life and strive for positive change. Time's Up is a testament to Living Colour's musicianship and social consciousness. Its timeless relevance is bittersweet, highlighting enduring societal issues, yet, it remains a musical marvel and a call to action, urging listeners to reflect, reassess and inspire progress.

Review: Living Colour's third album, Stain, marked a bold shift in musical direction for the NYC quartet. Following the success of their previous albums, the band delved into a heavier, angrier, and less accessible sound. True to form, Living Colour didn't shy away from socially conscious lyrics and thematic track groupings - see titles like 'Go Away,' 'Ignorance Is Bliss' and 'Leave It Alone'. The latter half of Stain is more diverse and experimental, with the industrial-tinged 'Auslander' standing out as one of the stronger cuts. Stain also marks the debut of bassist Doug Wimbish, replacing Muzz Skillings. The seasoned Tackhead veteran's bass is less prominent overall, but shines on the moody highlight 'Nothingness'. Vernon Reid's guitar work, while still spectacular, is more subdued compared to previous releases, demanding closer listening to appreciate its intricacies. Tracks like 'Postman' and 'This Little Pig' feature Reid's intense riffs, complementing the album's darker themes. For many fans of the band, Stain reaches the heights of their previous albums Vivid or Times Up in the way it makes a statement with the evolving times'.

Review: New York punks Love Child first burst onto the early 90s scene in the same aeonic breath as Pavement, Sebadoh and Beat Happening. But despite the ignition and hype, their debut seven-inch and subsequent releases have remained long out of print until now. Never Meant to Be: 1988-1993 pulls from these releases and some unreleased radio sessions, unearthing a trove of lost gems by the quadrangle of Will Baum, Alan Licht, Rebecca Odes and Brendad O'Malley. The former obscurity is undeserved and the reissue deserved, as the climaxes on this record - from the garbly top-reg guitar solo on 'Know Its Alright' to the tape-warblings of 'Sofa' (through and despite which we can still make out its humourous lyrics) - are full of forceful punk rapace.

Review: Travels In Constants was a wonderful thing. A subscription-only CD series from New York based record label Temporary Residence Ltd, as the new century dawned Low made their contribution to this audio saga with The Exit Papers. A quarter century or so later, and it remains one of the most stunning and powerful outings in the series. Originally just 1,000 copies were made of a collection best described as a "sparse suite of six mostly instrumental pieces composed for a film that never existed." Suffice to say, we have all read lines like that before, but rarely do they feel quite so apt. It's haunting, beautiful, tender, deep, floaty, and occupies some strange place that we've never been to before, but knew the moment we arrived. Electronic ambient, desolate dystopian Western score and lush serenity all at once.

Review: German born Johanna Platow Andersson aka Johanna Sadonis returns with the aptly titled fifth full-length from her Sweden-based retro heavy rock project Lucifer. Written and recorded in collaboration with her long-time bandmate and husband Nicke Andersson (vocalist/guitarist for hard rock Swedes The Hellacopters and drummer for legendary death metal entity Entombed), V continues the band's unique coalescence of accessible, grooving AOR emboldened by elements of classic doom metal and proto-psych. Complete with macabre, gothic lyrics delivered with Platow's incomparable, sultry, almost Wiccan cadence, the project offers a hypnotic dirge of horror delivered with a gentle hand.

Review: Johanna Sadonis (real name Johanna Platow Andersson) is the German Wiccan frontwoman of Swedish retro psych-doomers Lucifer. Crafted in collaboration with her regular songwriting partner and husband Nicke Andersson (of hard rock heroes The Hellacopters and death metal legends Entombed), the aptly titled V marks the group's fifth full-length and distils accessible AOR style hooks with the sleight hands of proto-metal and blues-tinged psychedelia, while lyrically delving into the occult and cosmic otherworldly rituals; elevated and brought to life by Platow's sultry, frosted and commanding presence.

Review: Before Motorhead, there was simply The Boys From Ladbroke Grove; a trio which included the metal legends' formative members Lemmy Kilmister and Larry Wallis. Spanning a whole host of early material, some of which has never before appeared on physical media, this retrospective compilation harks back to recorded and live work by the "family tree" of bands related to Kilmister and Wallis in the early 1970s, with rare numbers also included. Motorhead completists, perk your ears up!
