The Deacons

The Deacons (3:23)
Pisces Pace (2:24)
Review: Detroit musician and producer Dave Hamilton hears two fantastic early emissions of his reissued via BGP. Known originally as a guitarist and an early member of the Motown house band, Hamilton's influence on music, especially the later Northern soul firestorm in the UK, is perhaps understated. His guitar contributions to the likes of Marvin Gaye's 'Stubborn Kind Of Fellow' and John Lee Hooker's 'Boom Boom' are indeed cherished additions to the Michigan funk and r&b canon, but perhaps it's his later outings as Dave Hamilton and the Peppers - and later founding of the labels Demoristic and TCB - that house the real trinkets. 'The Deacons' and 'Pisces Place' both came out via the TCB label, and brought vibraphonic blues and astrologic easy listens respectively to wax.

When You're In This Mood (3:19)
Review: A new raw, bluesy punk-garage EP from Mick Hampshire - a zoomed-out existential musing on life, dealing in geological process, speck-of-dust sublimes and personal breaking points. Drawing on Hampshire's well-gained experience as the leading member of garage rock four-piece Mickey & The Milkshakes, Mick now goes rogue, dashing the cream shake to the floor, and turning his hand to a mendicant, roughshod, rock-relief style of blues. In 2022, armed only with his Grimshaw semi-acoustic guitar - unamplified - Mick sang and strummed through these four home-recorded, perhaps phone-recorded jams in an unnamed back room. The result is an honest and grievous sound, reaching its exasperated but shoulder-shaking climax on 'When You're In This Mood'.

Loose Fix (The Gird remix) (7:49)
Loose Fit (Perfecto 12" mix) (6:14)
Review: 'Loose Fit' isn't always the first song name that springs to mind when thinking about the Happy Mondays, but the immediately identifiable opiate guitar riff is up there with the band's most memorable and infectious. A highlight of the group's third album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, the track was already dancefloor ready before this pack of re-dos arrived on the scene. We're glad it did, though. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson open the scoring, keeping things thoroughly Manchester and acid-tinged, it's a trip through the blue lights and sweat of a warehouse at 2AM. The Grid's EOE Edit and subsequent Remix take the tempo down and the atmosphere deeper, almost druggier if that could humanly be possible given the wider context here. Topped off with a post-club overture in the form of the epic downbeat Perfecto version, and you might want to stick it in the shopping cart now.

Review: A veritable time capsule of a bygone era that now seems enviably innocent - fallout of Thatcherite politics, economic crises, and wars in the Middle East aside. Perhaps not too dissimilar from today, then, irrespective of your personal feelings towards Happy Mondays the baggy Mancunian swagger-ers did contribute one of the most distinctive voices to the Madchester and indie-acid crossover era, and one that oozed an air of disassociation from mainstream politics of the day. Adding to the sense of this being a period piece, Balearic Beats comprises four remixes of Ryder et al's original work, three of which from one of the leading figures in the dominant narrative about house music arriving in the UK - Paul Oakenfold. The tracks are low-slung, hypnotic, and have an atmosphere that's as thick as the air on a Mediterranean evening.

Review: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Steve Harley's iconic hit 'Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)', Chrysalis Records is serving it up on a limited 7" for Record Store Day. The single features the original version backed with a previously unreleased recording from Apple Studios, which offers a different perspective and nice twist on the original. 'Make Me Smile' was a UK chart-topper in 1975 and has sold over 1.5 million copies and is thought to have inspired more than 120 cover versions from artists like Duran Duran and Erasure. However, you can't beat the original, which is a glam-pop classic that continues to get love across generations.

When I Said Goodbye (4:11)
Review: Mayer Hawthorne's debut release hears a faithful reissue via Stones Throw. 'Just Ain't Gonna Work Out' was first released in 2008 as the first forerunner to the LP A Strange Arrangement, which was released the following year. Housed on a distinctively oblong, heart-shaped, red 7", the star track hears Hawthorne segue uncertainly from serenade to breakup song, and we're treated to his trademark croaky falsetto too; too nice to pass up. B-sider 'When I Said Goodbye' is a haunting soul reminiscence, giving barbershop harmonies laid down by a ghostly troupe, amid talk of shattered wills and wistful post-breakup apologies.

Jazz Carnival (3:34)
Magic Fly (3:06)
Review: Haze, an Exeter band that in 1981 endlessly toured the South West of England and released the album "SILVERTOPS REFLECTS HAZE" upon which many contemporary tracks were given the Haze treatment from Barry Manilow's 'I Can't Smile Without You' to Johnny Cash's 'Ghost Riders in the Sky'. In the mix Azymuth's Latin funk anthem 'Jazz Carnival' and Space's legendary electronic 'Magic Fly' surfaced, the latter two of which make up this exceptional 7" release by Panorama records, this relatively new label that celebrates idiosyncratic rarities. Haze seem to like breaking down the original and making space between the beats and yet on this A side an already pumping track pumps faster with an extra electronic edge on the Moog-ish organ, whilst paradoxically Haze's lead guitarist takes on Jose Roberto Bertrami's originally syncopated keys in a more regulated way - not a bad thing if not a jazz dancer but someone who just loves to dance! Intelligently, Panorama have coupled this with Haze's percussion heavy version of 'Magic Fly' on the B side, that even if it remains more so electronic, even poppy, it nicely compliments the Brazilian homage of side A. If you love a rare version, 7" 45s and early 80s jazz funk with a synthesised edge you'll love this.

Stuck Up (3:07)
When Someone's Good To You (2:39)
Review: Northern Soul devotees have long been captivated by unreleased Motown gems, and this one may be the best yet. Written by Chester and Gary Pipkin, 'Stuck-Up' was crafted to replace Mary Wells after her departure from Motown. Although Oma Heard recorded extensively, including a duet with Marvin Gaye, she was dropped for not fitting the label's image. The song was then given to Shirley Gunter, whose 1966 version on Tangerine Records became one of the rarest Northern Soul records, often fetching over 500 quid. Recently, the original Oma Heard version surfaced on a Motown unreleased CD and has been hailed as a classic by Ian Levine. Now, for the first time, it gets released on vinyl by Motown's V.I.P. label.

Review: Heartworms are brand new outfit releasing under Speedy Wunderground - one of the few contemporary imprints giving fresh faces a fighting chance. Their debut EP 'A Comforting Notion' embeds the dystopian vision of one Jojo Orme into our minds - the frontwoman is a grandiose performer, giving tired tropes of delicate female bandleaders a run for its money through means like gritty post-punk and dark synth instrumentation, and a macabre sense of humour. The band's name references a heart-defecting parasite that is commonly found in dogs and is spread through mosquito bites - but don't worry, this EP will make your heart feel nothing but joy (permitting, at least, that you're a fan of bleak music!)

Darkness, Darkness (9:58)
No Services (7:07)
Review: A collaborative new single by sampletronic master Kieran Hebden (aka. Four Tet) and guitarist and composer William Tyler, two acclaimed musicians and both longstanding friends. Part of a recent spewing-forth of Hebden-adjacent material to hit the shelves after the artist's oft-reported-upon "agent of chaos" phase, these two tracks, pressed to a furtive 12", provide a neat counterpoint to that assessment. Rather than a pair of riddim bangers, the record flaunts Hebden's signature electronic textures and Tyler's guitar into a hypnotic, nominally dark soundwhirl, reminiscent of the earliest days of Text, but with a unique edge - a sonic corner never quite scoured before by either artist.

Mondo Cane (4:22)
Review: Melbourne's Highschool (Luke Scott, Rory Trobbiani) continue to ride the wave of nostalgic post-punk, following an aesthetic pattern that has defined their work at least since 2020's initial run of singles - theirs is singular in its embrace of lo-fi and an unusual mixing approach, through which the lyrical content only barely pokes through a half-remembered smog (we love it). Now, 'Accelerator' comes as their first mini-album/EP, their second diversion via PIAS; the five-tracker meditates on everything from melancholic summer months ('August 19') to fantasy recollections ('She Took You To Narnia') to UFO religions ('Heaven's Gate'), nailing something between the washed-out but no less festival-ready riffs of Beach House and the laconic edge of Double Virgo.

Review: Yeah X 3, the latest single from David Holmes and Raven Violet's album Blind On A Galloping Horse, diverges from the overtly political themes of the record, instead offering a personal revelation. Featuring remixes by Panda Bear and Sonic Boom, as well as The Vendetta Suite's Gary Irwin, the single showcases diverse experimental approaches. For the A-side, the remixes are atmospheric and heady, creating a euphoric feeling with your head in the clouds. The second remix being the more beat forward version. For the B-side, massive amounts of sound heavily affected the remixes processing. The first being more of an ambient version while the last version is more straightforward and radio friendly. If you like the original song, then these versions will sit alongside them very well.

Review: It would take the current state of the world to awaken seasoned Boston based hardcore punk veterans The Hope Conspiracy from their slumber. The aptly titled Confusion/Chaos/Misery serves as the first piece of new material from the group since their 2009 True Nihilist EP, and offers a feral barrage of unhinged, D-beat inspired scathing hardcore fury. Whilst the members have kept busy in a myriad of equally impressive projects such as All Pigs Must Die, Hesitation Wounds, and Paint It Black (to name but a small handful), time felt fitting for them to regroup with Converge's Kurt Ballou at the iconic God City Studios to lay down this sonic curbstomp of a return, complete with a vicious cover of 'Dogfight' by Swedish crust-punk legends Anti Cimex as closer. And according to the band's website/press release - "this is just the beginning..."

Review: Guerssen Records specialise in reissuing obscure psychedelic music from the past, and here they home in on two early British psychedelic bands, Hopscotch and Andwella. 'Look At The Lights Go Up' is Hopscotch's contribution, with the band made up of former members of the Eyes and Tomorrow, and the track comes as a rare and unreleased demo of melodic trip-sat illumination and lyrical nonsensicality ("This lady from the forest of Manhattan...". Andwella's 'Felix' comes to the B-side, and is a formerly unreleased outtake from their second album World's End.

Review: Borrowing a title from a 50ft sport climbing route in Oliana, Spain, there's definitely something big and wonderfully overbearing about the debut offering from Hot Face. Freshly pressed onto London's revered and always-forward thinking Speedy Wunderground imprint, the work here more than lives up to the label's name, going at listeners with pedal to the metal for the most. Comprising two tracks, an original and 'dub', the opener nods to the likes of King Gizzard and other sprawling, epic prog-metal-psyche outfits, offering up huge guitar solos and switching tempos with cunning, guile and groove. Flip it to find the alternative take, which ups the impact of drums, taking us closer to dance music as it's more widely recognised, and the heyday of big beat, if anyone remembers that one?

Michael Hurley - "Jane" (3:55)
The Range Rats - "Go My Way" (2:33)
Review: Under a full moon to commemorate Portland's official holiday on their first Dead Moon Night, Mike Lastra recorded Michael Hurley play 'Jane' live at Portland City Hall in 2017. He performed, rather wittily, this cover of Portland Oregon Dead Moon's 1991 release to the most well attended non protest event in the history of the hall. Hurley, American "outsider folk" singer-songwriter, guitarist, banjo and fiddle player, and part of the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the 1960s and 70s is not only known for his iconoclastic songs, but also his cartoons and paintings, here illustrating the single's cover. The B Side 'Go My Way' features an unreleased Range Rats track from 1986 recorded at home by Fred Cole, Toody Cole and Rolly (their Roland drum machine), covered paradoxically by Portland's own Dead Moon in 2004, giving a comforting circularity to this limited 7" on Mississippi US, a label that prides itself in supporting artists and their families when crafting ethical and respectful releases of previously overlooked music. So, if you're into the Appalatian folk troubadour tradition with an undertone of irony that has a bluesy edge, you'll love this.

It's a beat-driven workout with funk in the drums. The B-side offers an exclusive and rather more stripped-back mix of 'Back in the Game' with Ron Isley, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, GZA, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah all seamlessly blended with the instrumental of 'House of Flying Daggers.' It's not often you get so many iconic collaborations all on one record which is why it is such a big hitter.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a remarkable collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, remains a standout achievement in both artists' repertoires. First released in 1986, this enchanting album is now receiving a well-deserved vinyl reissue, meticulously remastered by Robin Guthrie from the original tapes. This album is a stunning fusion of the Cocteau Twins' signature dreamlike atmospheres with Budd's elegant, improvisational piano, resulting in a listening experience that is both expansive and deeply personal. The blending of Elizabeth Fraser's ethereal vocals, seamlessly intertwined with Guthrie's luminous guitar work and Raymonde's resonant bass, creates a sound that is both distinct and evocative. The album effortlessly balances vocal tracks with instrumentals, each adding to its rich and diverse sonic palette. This reissue offers a chance to rediscover a defining moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The Moon and the Melodies continues to stun audiences. This CD edition is the perfect vehicle to an ethereal beauty of the highest order.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

Review: In 2018, Half Alive had a dream breakthrough. Their indie pop single 'Still Feel' and the accompanying high-end choreography-heavy video earned such a buzz that it landed them a record deal with RCA, where they went on to release two albums. Now signed to Virgin, their third album sees the California band deliver a multifaceted pop record that reflects the way we have boundless access to music this century so we're increasingly unconstrained when it comes to genre. 'Bleed It Out' blends throbbing techno bass with bleeping synths and guitars twisted to sound like synths as singer Josh Taylor hits falsetto notes with aplomb. The catchiest number here is the opening cut, 'All My Love', thanks to its banging chorus. It shows the band have a real gift for uplifting daytime radio hits. Meanwhile, 'Songs' has an Andrew Bird appeal with a stunning tender vocal and 'Persona' shows their knack for pop punk, with a tight drum performance.

It came with a well-choreographed video that has now been watched more than 80 million times. Showing their initial success is no fluke, they are now onto their third major label studio album. This album delves into some intimate emotions and thrives in its post-genre approach, although if you have the likes of Phoenix, OK Go in your collection, their often tender yet sprightly indie pop will likely appeal. 'All My Love' is an earworm big on hooks and a massive chorus. 'Sophie's House' is nu-disco joy, with a propulsive groove that provides an almost spiritually uplifting backing to the choir-like vocal. Elsewhere, 'Automatic' has pop punk edge - there's an aggression to it that reflects this increasingly popular group's chameleonic appeal.

Review: The sixth studio album from Half Waif aka. Nandi Rose, See You At The Maypole, hears the musician process loss, motherhood and miscarriage through 17 lissome songs of graceful, chin-up synthetics and indie spoken word. These tracks were originally intended as a departure from her earlier, darker works; the mood is timely autumnal, literally and figuratively turning new yet browned leaves; despite the electronically inflected and modern buzzing feel of 'Heartwood' and 'Ephemeral Being', all tracks were composed in a small cabin overlooking a luscious and rain-rippled pond, as part of a solo retreat in the Catskill Mountains in New York. And yet despite its singular locality, Half Waif commands a stylistic range that is unsettled as it is expansive, weaving between unseelie autotune, bracken textures and rustling melancholia.

Review: You can probably work out what's going on here from the title: a superb collection of reworked Hall & Oates classics inna reggae style. They are the fine work of Black Market Dub who likes to reimagine classic sounds through a 70s Jamaican lens. The techniques used throughout are superbly authentic with hissing hi-hats, lazy tumbling beats and snaking baselines. The vocals remain in their original, often polished, falsetto style and extra horns are added for a lush sunny impact. Great fun, but also great quality.

Review: LA based Black Market Dub like to rework great artists of decades gone by through a new sound system lens. This time it is the great 80s pop duo Hall & Oates who get the treatment with six of their most well-known tunes all reworked at slower tempos, with natty guitars, horns and rolling rhythms bring a new and sunny perspective. 'Private Eyes' in particular sounds superbly laid back and sun kissed for Balearic sessions and 'Maneater' also does the business with the original vocals soaring over lazy chords and amidst oodles of echo and reverb.

Tracks like 'When the Morning Comes' and 'Had I Known You Better Then' highlight Daryl Hall's and John Oates' songwriting ability and vocal harmonies, while 'She's Gone' stands out as a true classic with its emotive arrangement and memorable hooks. The reissue offers a fresh perspective on the album's enduring appeal, with remastered sound bringing out the nuances of the original recordings. Review: Hall and Oates, known for their classic You Make My Dreams, found new life in their lesser-known album, Abandoned Luncheonette. Recorded in 1973 at Atlantic Studios with producer Arif Mardin, this album captures them during the early points of their career, blending expert songwriting, beautiful harmonies, and top-tier musicianship. The standout tracks on Side-1, such as 'When the Morning Comes' and 'She's Gone,' highlight their Philly-soul sound and sublime production. 'Abandoned Luncheonette' on Side-2 also shines with its poignant storytelling about a derelict luncheonette, inspired by the album cover photo. These deep tracks are gaining appreciation from new generations, uncovering diamonds in their discography. This album is a testament to their youthful creativity and musical brilliance, inviting us all to explore beyond the hits and discover the true essence of Hall and Oates.

Review: French dream pop breakthrough Halo Maud follows up her debut record Je Suis Une Ile (I Am An Island) with her second ever LP, Celebrate, which lives up to its name in fantastic fashion. Evidently less introspective than her last, the sonic palette throughout this dozen sunbursts suggests Maud has found her inner John Donne; indeed, opener 'Terres Infinies' is a massive crasher of a three-pronged shoegaze, synthwave and art pop sensibility, and both sonically and titularly suggests a new, deterritorial antithesis to the first album's sense of introspection. Organic, well-rounded instrumentation hears Maud traverse infinite terrains of bright tambourines and detuned synths thereafter.

Review: Kicking off with recited verses from Romeo And Juliet and barely scaling the drama down from that point onward, 'Hopeless Fountain Kingdom' is a relentlessly far-reaching album from the Jersey born artist formerly known as Ashley Frangipane. Yet in a pop landscape increasingly dominated by radio-ready blandness and empty soundbites, these soul-searching and angst-ridden ditties bear genuine emotional heft to match their super-producer gloss, arriving at an arrestingly synth-driven sound more Depeche Mode than Ellie Goulding, and dissecting her trials and travails in a manner that suggests a fearless and feral talent built to last. A widescreen tour-de-force from a very 21st-century pop star.

Review: Tigran Hamasyan's latest album, The Bird of a Thousand Voices, is his most ambitious work yet and one inspired by a traditional Armenian tale. This transmedia project includes a staged play that premiered at the Holland Festival back in June of this year plus two cinematic music videos, a documentary video, and an online game. The ancient firebird tale, passed down through spoken word over the generations, symbolises the modern world's quest for connection amidst ecological, psychological, and spiritual challenges. By blending Armenian traditional music with jazz improvisation, Tigran, who himself is one of today's most innovative jazz pianists, continues his artistic collaboration with filmmaker Ruben Van Leer to create unique musical experiences.

Review: Since first joining forces in 2017, Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat have released some of the most magical albums of recent times - sets that cannily combine their mutual love of pastoral music, jazz-funk, library jazz, soundtracks and heady downtempo grooves. The Upturned Glass, the pair's sixth collaborative full-length, is another genuine gem. Highlights come thick and fast, from the skewed, lo-fi jazz-funk warmth of 'Pool In The Rose' and the string-drenched beauty of opener '6,000 Drunks Clinging to a Landslip' (an amusing title for a genuinely moving track), to the chiming, low-slung brilliance of the two-part title track and the emotive, slow-motion ambient-folk beauty of 'Evening Song'.

The result is The Big Melt, the duo's first missive as H.A.N.K. Beginning with the immersive, enveloping sound world that is 'Cruise' - a slow-build, effects-laden dreamscape that offers nods to classic Tangerine Dream, shoegaze and 1990s ambient electronica - the album bobs along attractively, with exotic rhythms and intoxicated electronics ('A Useful Fever') sitting side by side with shuffling Balearic instrumentals ('Azul's Garden'), kosmiche epics ('Jag Aar Jag'), sitar-laden wonders ('While My Tar Gently Weeps'), and analogue-rich nods to Neu!, Can and Dunkelziffer ('No Harm').

The third LP from the group since enlisting Tim Rogers (You Am I) on lead vocals, the record follows on from 2021's I'm Sorry Sir, That Riff's Been Taken, and 2023's Ripper '23; further expanding this newly revitalised era since the messy departure of original drummer/vocalist Keish de Silva in 2021. Proudly described by guitarist Peter 'Blackie' Black as - "Our best collaboration so far", the increase of melodious psychedelia offered by Rogers, yet still retained within the band's now signature sugar-punk gems, offer up sonic hard ons across the entire runtime.

Comprised of four music giantsiEmmett Kelly, Stephen Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, and Jim Whiteithis ensemble is a meeting of minds that have already left significant marks on the music world. Their collaboration, now crystallized under the name The Hard Quartet, promises a fresh take on rock 'n' roll, melding the familiar with the new and the melodic with the enigmatic. Each member brings a wealth of experience from their storied careers. Emmett Kelly is known for his work with The Cairo Gang and collaborations with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Ty Segall. Stephen Malkmus, a cornerstone of Pavement and the Jicks, needs no introduction to indie rock fans. Matt Sweeney, whose work spans Chavez to Superwolves, and collaborations with Johnny Cash and Cat Power, adds further depth. Finally, Jim White, the drumming force behind Dirty Three and Xylouris White, rounds out this formidable lineup. Their self-titled debut, available in limited edition Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl, collects the combined genius of these four musicians, offering a sound that is both groundbreaking and timeless.

Review: Francoise Hardy En Vogue - Best Of 1962-1967 captures the peak of Hardy's iconic career during her influential years on the Vogue label. Between 1962 and 1967, Hardy emerged as a symbol of French elegance and introspective pop, captivating audiences worldwide with her distinct charm and emotional depth. This compilation features her most enduring hits, like 'Tous les garcons et les filles', 'Mon amie la rose' and 'L'amitie', which embody the heartfelt sentimentality and existential undertones she brought to the French ye-ye scene. Hardy's songs, sung in French, English, Italian and German, highlight her international appeal and versatility, securing her place as a cultural icon from France to Japan. Her timeless melodies have been featured in contemporary films (including Wes Anderson's), TV series and ads, proving her enduring influence on music and style. Known for blending folk-rock, chanson and even touches of psychedelia, Hardy's work from these years reflects her unique voice in 1960s pop culture. This collection is essential for any fan of Hardy's atmospheric ballads and a perfect tribute to her role as a global ambassador of French sophistication.

Review: Sandy Harless' Songs album represents the Chillicothe, Ohio artist's sole foray into cosmic American music. It came during the 1970s and the height of the hippy movement's mellow phase and was, rather remarkably, funded by a business breeding 27 aquariums of fish. The record blends Appalachian roots with a rich mix of mountain folk, rural rock, and pastoral country. It's brilliantly authentic throughout and is a great representation of "real people" music that captures the essence of the era's down-to-earth vibe. It's one to put on around a campfire on a balmy summer's evening.

Review: Mercy is a collaborative work between the late great Lee "Scratch" Perry (during his post-Black Ark Studios era), Peter Harris and Fritz Catlin, the drummer from the industrial funk dub act 23 Skidoo. What they cook up is unashamedly experimental outsider works that collide mad mixing desk trickery, Perry's trademark vocal mutterings and plenty of occult sound designs. Melodies are smeared and smudged, rhythms are drunk and off balance and moods range from balmy to bonkers, often within the same damn track. A maverick collage, for sure.

Review: Fifty years after its original release, and over 20 since its first reissue, the quiet Beatle's landmark solo record All Things Must Pass has been punctiliously expanded once more, offering a complete sonic and archival overhaul. Spearheaded by Dhani Harrison and Grammy winner engineer Paul Hicks, the collection is a deluxe format-multiple, with one Uber Deluxe Box Set coming housed in a bespoke wooden crate and featuring 70 tracks. Alas, this CD edition is but a mere optical truncation, offering the humble and prudent listener a much sublimer curated experience: rooted in George Harrison's growing frustrations within the Beatles and a desire for artistic autonomy, 'Isn't It A Pity', 'Let It Down' and 'I'd Have You Anytime' still lie among the most enduring songs of Harrison's Tibetan Buddhist era, and with none other than compression master Phil Spector at the mix controls, you can be certain of a well-smoothened sonic experience from front to back.

Review: George Harrison's Living in the Material World, released in 1973, further deepened his exploration of spirituality while maintaining a sharp focus on worldly issues. The album opened with the beautiful 'Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)', which became a chart-topping hit, showcasing Harrison's talent for blending heartfelt lyrics with memorable melodies. His guitar work shone throughout the record, particularly on tracks like 'Sue Me, Sue You Blues', where his sharp reflections on The Beatles' legal struggles were matched by his masterful playing. Spiritual themes permeated the album, with songs like 'The Lord Loves the One (That Loves the Lord)' and the title track seamlessly blending meditative lyrics with intricate arrangements. Harrison's acoustic guitar, tabla, and orchestral elements created a warm, textured sound that was both intimate and expansive. The overall quality of Living in the Material World was a testament to Harrison's growth as both a songwriter and musician. This 50th anniversary edition highlighted just how important the album had been, reaffirming its place as a richly rewarding follow-up to All Things Must Pass and a key moment in Harrison's solo career.

Review: Early Takes Volume 1 presents an intimate glimpse into George Harrison's creative process, offering early versions and demos of some of his most beloved tracks. Originally released as a companion piece to Martin Scorsese's documentary Living in the Material World, this collection features ten songs, most of which are stripped-down renditions from All Things Must Pass, Living in the Material World, and Thirty Three & 1/3. The minimalist arrangements reveal the raw charm of Harrison's songwriting, allowing his voice and guitar work to shine unadorned. Highlights include acoustic versions of 'My Sweet Lord' and 'All Things Must Pass', which offer a refreshing contrast to Phil Spector's famously lush production. Tracks like 'Run of the Mill' and 'Behind That Locked Door' take on a more personal tone, while Harrison's cover of the Everly Brothers' 'Let It Be Me' adds a new dimension to the classic. Early Takes Volume 1 is a delightful collection that showcases Harrison's deep talent and leaves fans eager for more. Now, reissued on 180 gram vinyl.

Review: First released in 2009, Let It Roll: Songs By George Harrison delivers a punchy career retrospective focuses not on his biggest hits (though naturally many are present), but rather what are considered his greatest songs. Naturally his three most celebrated Beatles-era songs are present - 'Something', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and 'Here Comes The Sun' - albeit in the form of atmospheric live recording, but the bulk of the material comes from his prolific, post 1970 solo career. It is, then, a fine snapshot of a brilliant songwriter, with highlights including the sublime 'All Things Must Pass', the nostalgic 'All Those Years Ago', the string laden 'Isn't It a Pity', and the instrumental 'Marwa Blues'.

Review: It's 1999 and Haruomi Hosono and pal Makoto Kubota - the latter arguably best known for their part in Les Rallies Denudes - decide to take on a daring project for the era. The Japanese artists opt to put out an album inspired by one of the world's foremost musical cities, New Orleans, which on paper couldn't be much further removed from the soundtrack of their homeland at that time.

Dig deeper, though, and while the Mississippi blues feels resolutely Deep South, an experience at odds with the Far East, Japan's incredibly fertile music scene back then actually shared more in common with Louisiana's aural calling cards than you might think. A hotbed of ideas, an understanding of what funk and soul mean, mastery of jazz's loose structures. Exceptional stuff, finally on re-issue

Review: Beth Hart's You Still Got Me is a powerful statement with her dynamic vocal range and emotional depth spread across 11 tracks. The album opens with the edgy rock-blues of 'Savior With A Razor', featuring Slash's gnawing guitar, before diving into a collection of confessional and observational pieces. The title track is a poignant ballad, reflecting a heartfelt moment with her husband, while songs like 'Drunk on Valentine' offer a jazzy, Tom Waits-inspired vibe. Hart explores resilience in tracks like 'Little Heartbreak Girl' and captures raw emotion in 'Don't Call the Police', a poignant response to social issues. The album's eclectic sound is enriched by contributions from Eric Gales, whose guitar elevates 'Suga N My Bowl'. With a blend of rock, blues and jazz, You Still Got Me is an emotional journey that highlights Hart's artistry and authenticity. Her ability to weave personal narratives with broader themes results in a cohesive and impactful listening experience.

Review: Harvestman, the experimental project led by Steve Von Till, has released Triptych Part Two on Neurot Recordings. Following in the footsteps of Triptych Part One, which debuted this spring under the auspices of the Pink Moon, this installment is timed to coincide with the Buck Moon. Triptych is more than just an album series; it's a profound exploration spanning three lunar phases, each release synchronised with celestial events. Part Two introduces 'Damascus,' a composition marked by sinuous synth textures and percussive depths. Von Till describes its genesis as an experimental foray into loop-based composition, enriched by collaborative insights and months of refinement. Drawing inspiration from ancient landscapes and mystical lore, Triptych weaves together sonic tapestries that resonate with primordial energies. It's a testament to Von Till's visionary approach, bridging ancestral echoes with modern experimentation, captured in ethereal artwork by Henry Hablak. Triptych Part Two promises to enrich the listener's journey through its compelling and textured soundscapes.

Review: Steve Von Till concludes his ambitious Harvestman Triptych series with a deep exploration into folklore, ancient landscapes, and sonic experimentation on Triptych. Woven from two decades of home recordings, this final installment channels primal energies and lost traditions through a psychedelic, multi-layered soundscape. Von Till's psych-folk core is joined by elements of drone, sludge, and electronic noise, with notable guest contributions from The Bug, Wayne Adams (Petbrick), Douglas Leal (Deafkids), and others. Tracks like 'Herne's Oak' pulse with seismic bass, while 'Clouds Are Relatives' and 'Cumha Uisdean' resonate with haunting melodies. The album's dense layers evoke forgotten times, blending myth and music into a hypnotic reverie. Hablak's glyph-style artwork, continuing from Parts One and Two, complements the sonic journey with its mysterious, ancient symbolism. Triptych serves as a fitting, visionary conclusion to Von Till's projectian immersive, mind-bending journey through a soundscape rooted in the echoes of ancient civilizations. A truly remarkable end to a unique trilogy.
