Die Letzte Pause In Einem Poesiefestival (4:28)
Review: Dig out the lederhosen and prepare for a HI NRG workout of camp Eurobeat brilliance because 21 Downbeat is here to make their mark. This new EP comes following appearances at Mensch Meier, the canteen at Berghain and Fusion Festival and is all about energetic percussion, throwback synth sounds and unrestricted dance floor euphoria. All of the lyrics on these tunes are based on poems by award-winning author Yoko Tawada, and they feature from the off. Polyphonic vocals and slapping hits power along the opener, then 'Froschkommando (Biest)' is a cacophony of busted loops, clattering drums and steely hits. The flipside offers two more manic bits of euro-dance excellence.

Review: Given that Soulwax boys Stephen and David Deweale have a major hand in the running of Deewee - with all releases being recorded and mixed at their Belgian studio - it's perhaps unsurprising that the label's output is consistently good. This 12", seemingly a debut from chanteuse Charlotte Adigery, is every bit as impressive as its predecessors. It features the vocalist singing in a modern soul style - in multiple languages, we should add - over wonderfully imaginative, left-of-centre, heavily electronic backing tracks that variously doff a cap to early electro, Italo-disco, minimal wave, and - most surprisingly of all - pastoral folk. It's hard to describe, but uniformly brilliant.

Geronimo (vocal) (7:14)
Geronimo (Special instrumental mix) (6:54)
Review: Axel Frey didn't make many records - though he did guest on a few - but he was responsible for a genuine underground classic, hard-to-find 1986 single 'Geronimo'. Here the song finally gets the reissue treatment, allowing us to once again wallow in its attractive late-night mix of bubbly, Euro-disco style sequenced synth-bass, metronomic machine drums, ultra-dreamy chords and jaunty melodies. The A-side vocal version is superb - proper soundscape, club-ready melancholic synth-pop - but it's the flipside 'Special Instrumental Mix' that really gets us going. Full of dub style delay effects, stripped-back groove sections and echoing synthesizer sounds, it's an undeniably Balearic chunk of European club fodder from a time when house music was only just beginning to emerge from the United States.

Review: After the success of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "More More More", now follows the 3rd take out of the debut album of the Dutch 4 piece "Worlds Apart". This track has everything what a rock-pop ballad needs to have: Atmosphere, a superb arrangement and thoughtfulness. With "Worlds Apart", the four girls show impressive, that they are able to attract an older audience too.

Laura Branigan's soaring club anthem remake of the classic Abba heartbreaker from her beautiful final album "Remember Me" arrives now as a single on its own with a new remix, plus an extended version of the original track thanks to demand from fans who bombarded the label with requests for it. This is an amazing rendition, thanks to Laura's inimitable, passionate voice and the big high-flying synth lines and galloping beats churning below. Also includes a special trance-NRG 12" remix of her big 80s smash "Self Control" as well!

What My Baby Needs Now Is A Little More Lovin' (2:56)
Review: Valerie Carter, the late Southern California vocalist, is reimagined in a stunning new remake of the Faragher Brothers' 1976 classic, 'Never Get Your Love Behind Me.' This superb outing revives Carter's original 1977 vocals intended for her Columbia Records album, Wild Child. Producer Kathy Kurasch and Carter's sister Jan discovered the unreleased material and paired Carter's isolated vocals with the current Faragher Brothers band. The B-side features a new recording of James Brown's 'What My Baby Needs Now' using Carter's live 1976 performance. This single, which perfectly celebrates Carter's legacy, is available on a 7" vinyl courtesy of Record Store Day 2024.

Review: Here is the long awaited new single from Italian soul supergroup Change - some of you may recognise their classic "The Glow of Love" which featured the unmistakable vocals of then frontman Luther Vandross in 1980. After six successful albums throughout the 80's before disbanding and making a brief return in 2010, the group's new single "Hit Or Miss" will appear on their first album in 38 years: Love 4 Love which is produced by Change alumni Davide Romani Mauro Malavasi, it's got the same kind of life-affirming soul power you've come to love from the outfit, and they've still got the knack for a great tune - listen for yourself!

Co-written with Daniel Nigro, her debut album followed in the form of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and it captured the Missouri native's journey toward achieving her pop star dreams. Review: Record Store Day Black Friday edition gifts us this unlikely pairing of artists as Different offers up some Pet Shop Boys remixes of Claptone's 'Queen of Ice.' The extended mix goes first with a nice pop-tinged and subtly Balearic rework with warming electronic drums and the original emotive vocals. Their Moody mix then breaks up the beast a little into tumbling affairs that are perfect for summer festival deployment. On the flip is the heart-wrenching dance pop nugget that is the original of 'Queen Of Ice' (feat Dizzy) before the best of the lot - a nice and breezy 7" mix that is clean and catchy.

Review: It's a match made in Balearic heaven. Ela Minus, Colombia-born, Brooklyn-based artist, best known for building synths, placing agitational statements between her carefully woven ambient melodies and her Acts Of Rebellion album, meets fellow New Yorker DJ Python, he of the hypnotic dembow stylings, for a bumper value-packed six track EP. Ghostly vocals float across stark beats and sometime gloomy, sometime edgy but cheery dayglo musical textures on the three vocal versions, and there are three instrumentals for those who prefer their grooves that way.

Review: Japanese rocksteady and reggae revivalists Inokisara Rangers have spent much of their career delivering radical cover versions of everything from Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and New Order's 'Blue Monday' to Pharrel Williams' 'Happy' and Underworld's 'Born Slippy'. They're at it again on their latest "45", with vocalist Yuima Enya joining them for two more ear-catching reggae revisions. On side A they offer-up a typically jaunty, organ-heavy take on Britney Spears/Mark Ronson favourite 'Toxic', reimagining it as a cheery and skanking reggae-soul bumper. Arguably even better is the flipside cover of R&B classic 'Waterfalls', which in their hands becomes a slow-motion reggae sing-along.

Time (Hearts Full Of Love)
Same Game
Leaving
Come On Baby
Secrets
Review: Vince Clarke and Andy Bell won plenty of praise for their 19th album as Erasure, last year's Neon, with critics praising the analogue-rich, retro-futurist nature of its synth-pop sound. The tracks on this five-track EP, which was mostly recorded during the same period, mine the same pool of vintage synth sounds, some of which are reminiscent not of the pair's early joint works in the 1980s, but Clarke's earlier spell as one of the founder members of Depeche Mode. 'Time (Hearts Full of Love)' and 'Same Game' are both melancholic, stirring and addictive in equal measures, while the bleeping 'Leaving' is pleasingly dreamy. Those seeking more up-tempo, club-ready sounds should head for 'Secrets', a throbbing slab of turn-of-the-80s dance-pop which boasts numerous nods to Giorgio Moroder and Bobby Orlando.

"City Of Love" oozes synth soul charm with a mild pop edge and just the right amount of floatiness for it to achieve Balearic status. Million (3:19)
IRL (3:25)
Finish Line (3:11)
Review: Applying what we're all thinking in February 2021 to a kind of Netflix & Chill parody, Fickle Friends are definitely the most thematically fitting band of the month. The Brighton outfit join a long and esteemed list of British pop groups that manage to marry scathing, sarcasm, and bare-boned honesty with sweetness, beauty and universality. Providing you like those keyboards with a No.1-style glitter coating, of course.

Opening on biggest of the lot, 'What A Time', the troupe opt to get the most inescapably positive out of the way first before rolling out real variety. '92' is an icy cool, emotionally scarred (or scarring?) ballad, 'Million' is a stepping, rave-rock workout, with 'IRL' apparently made for sunnier times than the current UK winter, and finale 'Finish Line' closing out on a calming and uplifting tone that's not a million miles away from what some would describe as Balearic chill.

The A-side, 'Nous Continuerons a Marcher Ensemble' kicks off with a sharp guitar riff and builds into a catchy, powerful chorus. Review: The voice of some of autonomic's finest dubs over the last year (notably on the latest Heartdrive mix), Alia Fresco makes her full debut. Produced by label boss and multi-alias auteur Damon Kirkham, aesthetically each of these four cuts fuse the duo's rawest, most powerful soul and future sound skills but it's how it's all brought together with an almost poppy sensibility. From the smouldering "Ordinary Thing" to sci-fi tropical dancehall "Let You Go" by way of the tub-thumping Sofie Letitre-style "Guys Like You" and the mindblowing gospel soul of "Break Me Out", it's a beautiful collection that lives in a space of its own. For heads, hearts and homes... This is the future.

Review: Sami Galbi is a Swiss-Moroccan musician who looks to his childhood for musical inspiration. The A-side of this new 7" is a thoughtful post-breakup classic with raw synths and bouncing rhythm that melds rai influences with contemporary sounds and despite tacking a serious subject with gravitas also has a humourous edge. On the flip is 'Rruina,' a powerful follow-up with deeper darker club sounds that take Swiss-Moroccan rai-chaabi fusions into new territory. Both tunes are captivating listens from this fine talent and are sure to make an indelible impression on all who hear them.

What You Won't Do For Love

What You Won't Do For Love (4:10)
Valencia (3:55)
Review: "A jazzy throwback to Bobby Caldwell's biggest hit - I've loved so many versions of this song and now, thrilled to release my own version," says Emm Gryner of her final 2023 release. Taking on a classic is always difficult, and especially when it comes to something like 'What You Won't Do For Love', a smooth, sexy r&b workout from 1978 which remains one of legendary American singer-songwriter Caldwell's best known. Gryner plays it pretty close to the original, and her voice is more than up to the heartfelt lyrics, showcasing an impressive range as the tune steps out into its emotional conclusion. Flip it to find 'Valencia', which featured on the woman in question's recent LP, Business Pleasure, and nods to soft rock greats like Doobie Brothers and Fleetwood Mac.

Review: The 1993 smash Eurodance hit 'What is Love' reached number 1 in 13 countries when it exploded onto sound systems throughout Europe, only narrowly missing out on Number 1 in the UK to Gabrielle's 'Dreams' (and what a song to come second to!) A definitive mainstay in any '90s playlist, the German-American artist created a classic that has stood the test of time. 30 years after the pressing of the original 'What is Love' remixes, the 7", 12", club and Refreshmento Extro remixes of the 90s anthem are getting reissued on extremely limited red vinyl, the second release for Dance On The Beat Italy. Snap this up while you can.

Bodily Functions Remixes

You Saw It All (DJ Koze mix)
Foreign Bodies (Dave Aju mix)
Back To The Start
Back To The Start (Mr Oizo mix)
Review: Ahead of a touted revisit of Herbert's seminal Bodily Functions LP, a sterling cast of artists have been called upon to bring their own interpretations to some of those tracks originally composed from samples of bodies carrying out their day to day duties. DJ Koze is in a positively laid back mood on his version of "You Saw It All" with a swinging, Motown flavour to the groove and hopeful blasts of sampled melody. Dave Aju manages to wriggle himself into a perfectly woozy position with "Foreign Bodies", capitalising on Dani Siciliano's vocal and a particularly bugging synth. Mr Oizo gets classically chopped and cheeky with "Back To The Start", letting the beat sloppily tumble down in an irrepressible funk which contrasts nicely with the inclusion of the original version alongside it.

Review: Hawaiian enka singer Torao Hikariyama is renowned in his circles for winning a foreign talent singing competition on TV. He is utterly beloved in his home country, and rightly so, for his performances at Bon dance festivals. He has several hits to his name and now one of them, the wonderful 'Torao no Tairyo Sen' has been daringly remixed and dubbed by Tengaku Dub. This brilliant release now makes its long-awaited debut on double-sided 7" and is sure to get plenty of heavy plays.
