A_A, an ongoing audio project, explores the visceral tension between floor-centric ambient electronica and improvised sound/audio performance. Here, found and object-activated sounds fire a collective dub trigger, producing a distinctly somatic regrounding across five original works.

Review: This steadfastly experimental three-tracker has its origins in a Hamburg instillation by F#X and Nika Son. That installation was created utilizing a battery of tape machines, broken synthesizers, cheap drum machines and their own manipulated vocals. The resultant tracks are dark, woozy, atmospheric, densely layered sonically, and devilishly hard to pin down. So while nine-minute A-side "Geroll" revolves around a manipulated, hip-hop style breakbeat, it's the ghostly electronics and curious effects that catch your ear. Flipside "Diptongues", seemingly created from densely layering up reversed vocal samples and creepy electronics, is even more impressive, even if it may inspire nightmares amongst the squeamish. Bizarre music concrete cut "Tenno" completes a fine package.

Review: Calypso are back with another clutch of exciting mavericks orbiting the weirder end of the contemporary club spectrum. There are minimal wave influences to be tacitly detected on Nicola Cruz's "Tu Recuerdo" as well as kind of stripped back acid freakiness, while in FE's "Tarde O Temprano" there's even more gritty, industrial tinged bite in the billowing surges of machine rhythms. Quixosis takes some wonderfully lilting traditional percussion and gives it a freaky treatment which makes for the kind of slow jam Weatherall would have wielded with aplomb. NTFL finishes this ear-snagging compilation off with the plaintive, Dembow-tinted "Vacio".

Review: With Ajukaja, Maria Minerva and Hypnosaurus now something of recognised names thanks to Tallinn-based Porridge Bullet, the label reinstates its Bullet various artist series that helped the label find its footing in 2012. Sporting a new batch of emerging artists, this second edition is as fresh-faced as the first, and perhaps the wildcard of the four tracks is Trinidad's Neville Lawrence, aka Superstar & Star, whom Porridge Bullet apparently fell in love with after discovering his YouTube channel. S&S's cut "Looking At The Star & Heavens" makes the grade thanks to Tallinn-based London ex-pat DJ Rhythm Doctor cyphering the smoky vocals and air-pushing drums of the original into a 'YouTube Mould'. Ajukaja hooks up with Porridge Bullet solid Mart Avi for an eerily minimal and quiet "Symmerty Of Human Body Jimmy Winkle Waltz", while Neuronphase makes a second VA appearance (still no solo release) with a dusty slo-mo jam joining the dots between the tropes of Madteo and Lobster Theremin records. Meanwhile Dima Disk's is given A1 privileges with a lo-fi sweety of a tune - "Casino".

Review: Musical (and real life) couple Local Suicide has been in fine form of late, delivering a series of solid collaborations with the likes of Curses, Franz Matthews and Theus Mago. Here they go solo once more via a first outing on Lumiere Noire. Title track "Leopard Gum" is dark, woozy and feverish, with the pair wrapping curiously off-kilter vocals, intoxicating electronics and ghostly chords around a slow, sparse, bass-heavy groove. It's given a throbbing, darkwave inspired makeover by regular studio buddies Smagghe & Cross, before Local Suicide serves up the clandestine and atmospheric new wave chug of "Already There". In typical fashion, synthesizer fetishist Phillip Lauer offers up an Italo-disco influenced interpretation that turns the track into a cheery chunk of Balearic disco goodness.

Review: "Shared Meanings" has been one of Mumdance's most ambitious and explorative projects to date; pulling together the four corners of the hardcore continuum and tying them in a tight bow, his mix has drawn elements and parallels between all genres and laced them in a narrative that mirrors and reflects throughout. Now, for limited time only, we have five of the 32 tracks he included in the mix ranging from his and Logos' totem track "Teachers" which pays homage to the UK's forefathers, to the pulverising thumpy bumpy techno of Nkisi's "Kinenga" via stasis sensation ambience from Space Afrika in the form of "After They Entered It Was Only Evident". Coordinates don't come much broader or deeper, "Shared Meanings" is Mumdance in full on explorer mode. Long may his meaningful trips continue.

Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint is back with some painfully killer material! Martins Rokis aka N1L makes his debut with six slices of freaked-out electronics and vaporous industrialism, all wrapped up in a familiarly UIQ sort of flavor. There is little that one would consider 'normal' about this EP, and it's fair to say that nothing about it sounds stale of regurgitated. In fact, this is perhaps some of the weirdest, more far-out material that we've heard from the label, which is sort of another way to say to say that it's the oddest material on our carts this week. It ain't ambient, it's not mechanical enough to be techno, and it certainly doesn't fall under the 'bass' umbrella. What we do know is that it'll appeal to those wanting something completely different, and a range of tunes to make the crowd turn their head with disbelief. TIP!

Review: After making a sizable appearance on Opal Tapes last year with the Juan PestaNas release, Naka Naka is back this time on the vinyl arm of the imprint to deliver some solid techno tackle rich with atmosphere and drama. "Dioges" is an obvious highlight with its distant horn refrains filling out a powerful sense of space, made only more tangible by the low end tones that come in after. "Def Def" pushes the classic box jam out into the midst of a reverb blizzard, and there's still space for some ambient reflection as on "Sec2". As a six track mini LP, there's a lot jammed onto this one 12", and Opal Tapes proves once again why its such a trusted source of adventurous sonics in and around the weirdest fringes of 4/4 music.

Review: DJ/producer Nan Kole (aka Francesco Cucchi) is a natural-born musical activist. A long-time advocate of contemporary African music and trans-national cultural exchange. He brings more takes on the gqom sound here with the Malumz EP for Bristol's Black Acre. There's some booming, tunneling and thunderous rhythm action happening on the epic "Bayefal" while some deep acid antics on "Malumz" (Tribute To Gqom Oh!) keep up with a relentless boom: Plastikman goes to Afrika on this one! On the flip, the said track gets two awesome remixes: Citizen Boys rendition is very nefarious indeed with its razor sharp strings in minor acting as bassline over its jacking vocal loops. Then Formation Boyz step up with some impressive off kilter rhythm therapy.

Review: The last time that Marcello Napoletano flew this far off the radar was on Jamal Moss Mathematics label back in 2012. Now the follow up release comes on another outsider label, Berceuse Heorique and again, Napoletano treats the listener to another freeform selection. While the Italian producer's house grooves have always been unconventional, going all the way back to Listen In Dreaming, this is in a whole different realm of weirdness. "Introspettivo" kick starts the release with doubled up beats and mad percussive whirrs and clicks and deranged cowbells. "New Old Think" goes in a jazzy direction with sax squalls fused with Patrick Pulsinger-style atmospherics and "Sunplasemood" ends the release with dubbed out beats and space invader bleeps.
