Review: F.S.Blumm and Nils Frahm have made a wealth of fantastic collaborative LPs before now. 2X1=4 is the fourth and it comes on Leiter, a label that has been newly formed by Frahm and his manager, Felix Grimm. Across the course of seven subversive tracks. The pair explore a rather unpredicted dub world. Plenty of 80s drum machines lend the album is unique musical signature and 2X1=4 follows on from Frahm's surprise album Graz, which he dropped on his usual home of Erased Tapes back in March.

Review: F.S Bluum and Nils Frahm are old sparring partners, having first joined forces in the studio for 2010's Music For Lovers Music Versus Time. Three years on from their last joint venture, the pair is reunited on Tag Eins Tag Zwei. Each side of the record is made up of a gently evolving suite of interconnected tracks, seemingly formed from live improvisations in the studio. With Bluum playing a variety of guitars, and Frahm piano, harmonium and celesta, there's a pleasingly organic feel to proceedings. As a result, both sides sit somewhere between krautrock, ambient, and modern classical, with the music being rarely less than magical.

Review: To celebrate the release of their first collaborative work in three years, Tag Eins Tag Zwei, F.S Bluum and Nils Frahm have decided to reissue their first two albums on one gatefold release. Record one boasts Music For Lovers Music Versus Time, the 2010 debut that established their studio partnership. Boasting a selection of improvisations focused on Bluum's acoustic guitars and Frahm's piano, it's also blessed with some magical contributions from brass and woodwind players. Over on record two, you'll find 2013's Music For Wobbling Music Versus Gravity, which successfully stripped back their core approach - just guitars and piano, with occasional use of effects pedal and sampled textures - whilst retaining their delicate balance between neo-classical beauty and high-minded experimentation.

Review: A match made in heaven, again. German underground hero FS Blumm teams up with everyone's favourite eccentric electronic pianist-producer-mad scientist Nils Frahm for a fourth collaborative album, and despite this combination of spectacular talent being familiar to fans by now, this one is delightfully unexpected. We're guessing that's what the whole 2 Times 1 Equals 4 title is all about.
Bad maths aside, the record is saturated in dubby moods, head-nodding rhythms and reverberating low ends, crackled harmonies and guitar licks ensuring there's a definite depth to the heavy grooves, none of which are really in keeping with either of the names involved. Set to mesmerising electronica, the refined instrumentation calls to mind the likes of Sabres of Paradise at their best. Which is definitely not something you get to say every day.

Review: Pablo Bolivar & Nacho Sanchez are deep smiths who know how to craft a well-rounded album. They do so here for the Seven Villas label with Distances, which travels far and wide into electro, ambient and techno fusions. Straight off the bat, 'Distant Planets' is a cinematic sound with widescreen pads and seductive electro rhythms. There is plenty of meaning and emotion in the pad work throughout this record whether in the downbeat dub sounds of 'Aquarium' or prickly electro-tech of 'Near Future'. Sophisticated stuff from front to back that comes almost a decade after the pair last worked together.

Review: This is something very special indeed for fans of both Nine Inch Nails and Coil, as unreleased remixes from the British avant-garde band of Trent Reznor's legendary band are finally released. Originally made almost 20 years ago, these tracks were featured on a bootleg called Uncoiled last year, but here see an official version thanks to the Cold Spring label. The centrepiece is Coil's version of "Closer" which featured on the opening credits of David Fincher's 1995 film Se7en, but each of the other tracks - which were supposedly tracked down by a NIN forum member - including their breakbeat revision of "Gave Up" and disturbing vocal treatment on "A Downward Spiral" are gems for fans of both acts alike.

Review: Recoiled, the collaboration between Coil and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, is a stunning blend of the former's avant-garde sensibilities and 90s hi-tech mixing techniques. Originally mixed in the early studios of Danny Hyde and Peter Christopherson, these tracks were the result of Reznor sending over the original multi-tracks for them to remix. The album features fuller, more opulent versions of tracks like 'Closer,' which was used in the opening credits of the movie 'Se7en' , and are characterised by their pre-Ableton tech, with bespoke effects created with baby alarms and wires. Some of these previously released in part on the download-only Uncoiled but this version includes a previously unheard bonus track from the same sessions. Remastered beautifully, Recoiled is a testament to Coil and Reznor's joint genius, with each track offering a thrilling, darkly atmospheric journey into the realms of industrial music.

Review: Say what you like about the third part of the Godfather trilogy, the soundtrack will still transport you back to the streets of Naples and the world of Michael Corleone in a heartbeat. The music is largely credited to Carmine Coppola, father of Francis Ford Coppola, although there are a variety of performers and composers who collaborated on the score. Notably, Harry Connick Jr performed 'Promise Me You'll Remember', which was nominated for Academy and Golden Globe Awards for Best Original Song. Review: Carine Coppola broke the mold with the score to the first Godfather movie, perfectly encapsulating a film that's as much about pitting old world - or, at least, old ways - against new as it is mafioso wresting for control and the hierarchical organisation of the Cosa Nostra clans. The Godfather Part III was released almost 20 years after that inaugural landmark, and to say times had changed by then would be an understatement. Maligned at the time and rightly remembered as the weakest in the epic trilogy, this isn't to say that parte tre is a rubbish flick, but more emphasising how high the benchmark was set by the preceding pair. It also arrived into a far faster era for movie gangsters, but remained committed to the slow, thoughtful, almost sophisticated approach to getting dirty deeds done. The music reflects this, offering plenty of references to the earlier scores, and refusing to entertain modern sounds, while still cementing its own identity.

Review: Miami duo Coral Morphologic has linked up with Nick Leon for a debut collaboration here, Projections of a Coral City, which lands on the cultured Barcelona-based label Balmat. It's a lush listen that very much soothes mind, body and soul with its widescreen ambient synth scopes, suspensory pads and painterly strikes of sound. The mood is carefree and dreamy, occasionally rueful and introspective and always realised in a beautiful fashion. Here's hoping this might be the first of many collabs if this is the sort of work these artists can cook up together.

Review: Leftfield heroes Don't DJ and NWAQ (aka Newworldaquarium) nudge their own sonic boundaries on Fashion, a fantastic mini album for on Meakusma. The tracks were recorded live at Meakusma Festival 2019 and at a residency preceding the Belgian event and fuse weird percussive techniques, glassy synths and airy light house with abstracted techno sound. It's a collage of sonic experiments that burrows deep into your brain one moment ('Central Bern/No Burn') and then sooth you the next ('Vanessa'). It's is the collision of two distinctive styles and thrilling new ground that is found as a result that makes this such a compelling record.

Review: There should be more than a few techno fans getting rather excited right now. You see, Donato Dozzy and Nuel's Aquaplano Sessions is something of a "holy grail" for tribal-influenced minimal techno collectors. Originally released over two 12" singles on the short-lived Aquaplano label in 2008 and 2009, the material has long been held in high regard - so much so, in fact, that copies of the original vinyl pressings are extremely hard to find. This reissue from Spectrum Spools is great news for anyone who missed out first time round. While there are some immaculate deeper moments (see the becalmed dreaminess of "Aqua 8"), it's the robust, aggressive, bass-heavy and occasionally intense tracks that really stand out.
