Flash Crash/Hack Crash
Cat: AMEN 012/AWC008. Rel: 23 Sep 24
Agonis - "Black Swans" (5:02)
Konduku - "Liquidity" (6:24)
Lemont - "Cascading Mistakes" (6:49)
Varuna - "Speculative Communities" (6:24)
Review: Basel-based experimental labels Amenthia Recordings and A Walking Contradiction join forces for their first collaborative release here in the form of the Flash Crash/Hack Crash EP. Both labels are known for pushing boundaries within their close-knit creative circles and this one features Agonis' heavy stepper and Konduku's whirlpool of low frequencies on the Amenthia side, while Lemont continues the low-end, tripped-out vibe. Varuna represents A Walking Contradiction and delivers swampy, slow-motion sounds in their signature style. This release embodies both labels' commitment to daring, unconventional electronic sounds.

Pale Calling

Pale (18:42)
Calling (20:13)
Review: Pale Calling sees Black Truffle boss and all round experimental maven Oren Ambarchi collaborating with Kassel Jaeger and James Rushford for an album consisting of two long form compositions laid down in Paris back in 2014. Featuring killer artwork from Sunn O))) man Stephen O'Malley, and mastered by Rashad Becker, Pale Calling is aptly described as "a mysterious space of slowly cycling electronics, distracted vocal mumbles and often unidentifiable field recordings." It arrives in a busy year for Ambarchi's Black Truffle following long players from Charlemagne Palestine and improvisational trio AMM, and proves to be a delicious listen that will appeal to fans of the recent Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Felicia Atkinson album.

Review: Siamese Twins Nic Ford, Khun Fluff, and Temple Rat team up with sonic reinterpreters Jonathan Kusuma, Konduku and Higher Intelligence Agency, for the Katha Remixes - adding to the recently popularised genre of amphibious techno. While the label Siamese Twins normally go for cassette, this neat precision V/A release is a yellow vinyl number. Like a noctile toad stalking the night, the tracks here range from dark organic chuggers to jumpy synaptors to melodic bloopers, all reflecting different facets of the amphibian master genome.

Eine Welt Vol 2 EP
Cat: EW 002. Rel: 30 Oct 17
Geier Aus Stahl - "Mudes Geschrei" (5:27)
Zeta - "Cola Cubes" (6:12)
Konsistent - "Track 3" (feat MZ) (5:53)
Novoline - "Granchio Scorreggiante" (5:22)
Nixxon - "Tsungire" (5:45)
Galgo - "Fun Cum" (6:09)
Review: Alexander Arpeggio's Mond Musik was a delightful entry into the world of wacky, rare-as-hen's-teeth electronic reissues when it stormed onto the scene a few years back, so the man's new imprint, Eine Welt, promises much the same delight and good vibes. This is the second release to date, the second instalment of the Eine Welt series, and like last time, it's composed fiery new sounds from an emerging clique of artists. Among our favourites, Zeta's bittersweet drum-machine ballad gets top marks, along with Konsistent's "Track 3", a slow-burning hybrid killer that subtly hints at cold wave while still retaining a modern techno edge. On the flip, we've been lovestruck even further, first with Nixxon's bubbling pseudo acid on "Tsunigre", and then by Galgo's quirky balearic nodder called "Fun Cum". What a beauty - this comes highly recommended!

The Golden Triangle (5:06)
Sunju Hargun & GiGi FM - "Lens Of Time" (6:24)
Sunju Hargun & Konduku - "Mekong" (5:54)
Ruak (7:04)
Review: A record that explores deep, hypnotic rhythms with a strong tribal and mystical undercurrent, the latest Siamese Twins records pushes the boundaries of what is possibly in eastern influences underground techno. Side-1 opens with 'The Golden Triangle', an atmospheric introduction that feels cinematic, setting the stage with ambient textures before giving way to movement. 'Lens of Time' follows, locking into a deep, primal groove where rolling percussion and rich low-end create an entrancing effect. On Side-2 'Mekong' leans into tribal mysticism, blending ancient rhythmic patterns with a modern pulse. The production is detailed yet raw, drawing from rich percussive layers. 'Ruak' closes the EP with pulsating bass and deep, rolling rhythms, channeling Eastern influences into a hypnotic techno flow. A powerful release from Siamese Twins Records, driven by Sunju Hargun's distinct vision.

HLM - "En Ecailles" (4:04)
Tony Y Not - "How About Lily" (6:21)
Kimshies - "12 Windows" (4:22)
Rees - "Lucifer's Tango" (5:25)
Endrik Schroeder - "Rainy Days" (5:48)
Review: Berlin-based Ombra International love all things post-punk and Italo disco, and they continue to represent that fusion in style on their 21st release. First up HLM brings a heavy wash of synths to 'En Ecailles' before Tony Y Not get into a twanging new wave vibe on 'How About Lily'. Kimshies has a sleazier sound to offer up, while Rees pushes all manner of vintage arpeggios at the behest of 'Lucifer's Tango'. That leaves it to Endrik Schroeder to finish the set with the atmospheric 'Rainy Days', a perfect tribute to washed out 80s post-punk with a strong dose of disco pumping in its veins.

Luminous Spaces (7:06)
Luminous Beings (11:53)
Review: Virtuoso musician Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens are a perfect compliment for each other on their new EP for Domino. Both are leaders in their field and used to exploring outside the usual lines, which is what they do here. "Luminous Spaces" was meant to be an Owens remix of a track from Hopkins' 2018 album SIngularity but instead she recorded new synths and vocals for it. The result is sparkling bit of melodic and astral techno that gets you lost in the lushness as you sink ever further into a trance. "Luminous Beings" is a deeper anymore thoughtful vision that makes a different but equally real impact.

The music breathes inspiration, vibrant detail, and an aspiration towards harmony with the natural world.

This debut record is all deep beats and breaks and it's full of the fuzzy feels and swollen atmospheres we've come to expect from the imprint. It's a bit of a mini album, moving from Ilian Tape techno influences to a closing number reminiscent of Ulrich Schnauss.

It's A War (2022 mix) (6:46)
I'm Ready (2022 mix) (6:54)
Review: Kano's 'It's a War', a guitar and Clavinet-laden throb-job from 1980, is one of Italo-disco's most celebrated moments - a gorgeously over-the-top affair whose bleeping lead lines, sequenced synths, rubbery bass guitar and spoken word vocals are instantly recognisable. Here it gets brought bang up to date thanks to new mixes from Kano themselves, and Purple Disco Machine and Lorenz Rhode. The latter pair delivers vocal and instrumental takes on side A, eschewing the guitars, beefing up the beats and giving more prominence to the driving bassline, bleeping melody and sequenced synths. Kano's 2022 mix of the track restores the elements they left out, adding a touch of low-end weight, while their accompanying light-touch rework of 'I'm Ready' (arguably the trio's greatest moment first time around) is a body-popping, life-affirming delight.

Kopriva (Opa Kanz Rerub) (4:13)
Review: KANZ's artist alias, when reversed, becomes ZNAK, meaning "SIGN" in Bulgarian. He hails from Lyulin, a district known for breeding either crime or art, and thankfully Kaloyan embodies the latter. This outing on MELMAK is opened with '25% Personality (with Dickie)' which is deep and atmospheric dub techno. 'Low Orbit' is just as deep but more driving with some pad laced beauty up top, 'Trench Music' then brings frosty Berlin dub techno vibes, 'Dub Tool A' has conscious vocal mutterings and 'Splais' is a slow motion gem for late night contemplation. 'Kopriva (Opa Kanz Rerub)' is a spine-tingling closer with angelic vocals.

1988 (5:12)
Review: Karolina BNV is not to be messed with, putting it lightly. The Berlin-based producer has garnered a loyal following among fans of EBM, New Beat, industrial, electro-goth and robot sex droid fetish production scenes. The latter we just made up but hopefully you get what we're getting at. Descriptions aside, she follows her 'Lessons On Good Behaviour' release with four more tracks born from a terrifying future we're probably already living in, we just don't really know it yet. From the apocalyptic sludge and punch of 'Unforgivable Decisions', to the electro rave squelch and staccato percussion of 'Context Abuse', the two tracks roll out relentless grit and grime. Then you have '1988' and 'Germany Calling', with their retro futurism, acid house totems held high in the air for all to see that there is still some resistance to the robots.

Review: Still riding high from the success of his superb re-make of Manuel Gottsching on Test Pressing ('A Reference to E2-E4'), Alex Kassian returns to Pinchy & Friends - who released his similarly popular 2021 EP 'Leave Your Life' - after a three-year break. Beginning with the lusciously languid, Balearic, effects-laden and sonically layered title track ('Body Singer', where Jonny Nash style guitars and tumbling sax motifs rise above a sparse drum machine beat and shoegaze-esque aural textures), the Berlin-based producer offers up a loved-up mix of weightless ambient bliss (Kinship), kosmiche soundscapes (the sun-flecked 'Skinship'), revivalist Krautrock (the Can-after-several-spliffs headiness of 'Trippy Gas') and immersive, cinematic excusions (the gorgeous 'Mirror of the Heart').

Review: Test Pressing is a legendary and influential blog that documents dance music's most special moments past, present and future, all from a mature and in-the-know perspective. It makes sense that it is now branching out with an all-new label arm, and it makes sense that the first offering is a real doozy. Alex Kassian is the man in control and he serves up a 90s, trance-tinged new age techno adventure with 'Voices' which also comes as a blissed out ambient version, and punchy tribal sweat-athon. 'Lifestream' then douses you in a world of psychedelic and tropical synth laden Balearic brilliance.

Her tracks and live sets are known for their meditative quality, with each transition serving a deeper, intentional purpose. That plays out here on her new EP Axis of Light, on which Troianiello presents five pieces where the drops and transitions flow seamlessly and gradually reveal hidden layers and meanings as the journey unfolds.

Review: In advance of release, Diagonal and Elon Katz have been particularly mysterious when it comes to the contents of The Human Pet. Instead of the usual press release, they simply emailed journalists a bizarre list of "care instructions" for said mythical companion. Katz, who rose to prominence as part of Streetwalker and White Car, is something of a bombastic, electronic eccentric, and The Human Pet is ostensibly a pop album dragged through several hedges backwards. Expect impassioned, stylized vocals, twisted boogie synths, scattergun electronics, bizarre beats, breakcore style cut-up madness, and crusty special effects. Oh, and discernible nods to EBM, industrial and Autechre.

Review: First released in 1986, "Electric World" was the debut single from Ryo Kawasaki and Satellites, a New York-based collective helmed by a computer programmer who built his own MIDI-workstation. Here it gets a timely reissue. It's an intriguing EP, with the title track - which is available in original mix and extended version form - offering a breezy, warm and (whisper it) Balearic mix of cheery synth-pop melodies, addictive female load vocals, dreamy chords, NYC freestyle ticks (the oft-used Fairlight orchestral stab) and beats that sit somewhere between electro and freestyle. Instrumental cut "727" continues on a similar theme, peppering a squelchy bassline and bustling machine drums with spacey chords and oodles of additional percussion sounds.

Back To Vid (Azu Tiwaline remix)
Review: Romanian duo Khidja follow up their former release for Hivern Discs, 'Impossible Holiday', with a sequel of sorts. 'Something In The Water' blends 80s horror-soundtrack detunings with tropes from cold wave and balearic music, bringing an uncanny vibe to retro synthy stuff that, happily, can't quite decide whether it's disturbed or relaxed. 'The Future Has Disappeared' hears a ghostly voice meditating on the sudden Fisher-esque cancellation of time observed in recent years, while neo-tropical surges of sound peek through on 'Back To Vid'. 'Science Of Ghosts' works in sounds we never thought were humanly replicable over a restrained electro motif, while Azu Tiwaline explores a swampier midnight mood on their remix of the A2. A hauntologic gem from the Bucharestian bros.

Review: The second act of Bucharest-based duo Khidja, the deep-groove junkies' debut LP 'Transmissions Part 1 & 2' released earlier this year. Over the 76-minute runtime, the two delve into downtempo industrial, on 'Under Stressure' with its droning horns and spacey synths, to more traditional, analogue-influenced synthwave techno, 'Laid Back' sounding like a crazy circuit bypassing experiment from the bygone age of manual electro. Throughout the transmission, Khidja employs 90s tribal influences just as faithfully as 80s space-age synthpop tropes - like the trilling synth falsettos on epic closing track 'Oil'. Khidja have been proving in, and outside, of the club scene that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Martin Matiske - "Dimensional Mode" (5:04)
Review: Launched back in 2020, Diamonds in the Night is Bordello a Parigi's multi-artist EP series. This is the fifth volume and, like its four predecessors, is firmly focused on peak-time and after-hours dancefloors. Kick and Enrik Schroeder get things going via the spiralling synthesiser melodies, thrusting sequenced bass and hands-aloft Hi-NRG vibes of 'Mezzanotte' - think Giorgio Moroder on steroids and you're close - before Club Mayz drops the darker, more angular and analogue rich Italo-disco throb of 'Princess of Excess'. Martin Mastike's 'Dimensional Mode' is a more pulsating and cheerful chunk of mi-tempo Italo, while WLDV's 'Relax and Enjoy' provides a suitably surging, clattering and breathless conclusion.

Review: Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are having much of their material reissued right now. It is well worth checking out if you aren't familiar, and after people hear this remix of one of their tunes from DJ Shadow they are sure to do just that. The us DJ maestro and studio wizard brings plenty of his scratch madness to 'Black Hot Soup' as well as making the drums hit that bit harder. It could well be an outtake from his seminal Endtroducing album frankly. The same tune then gets played backwards on the flip for a real head wrecking jam.

Review: In eleven years of deep digging, Dark Entries has uncovered many curiosities, lone exemplars of the scarsest breeds. They are lurking in Croatia, on the streets of New York, maybe in the back of your own dusty closet - these odd-ball Italo and synth-wave monsters are too rare to live, too divine to die. Once-lost creatures now have a home with Dark Entries' new Endangered Species series. The inaugural edition features five specimens previously deemed extinct, only mentioned passingly in lore and speculation, but now safely preserved on vinyl.

Review: Leyland Kirby has been doing his thing since the mid-90's. Having released almost all of his music on his own History Always Favours The Winners, we can safely say that he's a self-made man. This time, he comes through with the third chapter of the Intrigue & Stuff series, a corner of his label which has been dedicated to more synth-led concoctions of intricate experimentalism. In short, Kirby places electro, ambient, noise and power electronics into a blender and hits frappe! There's a genuine sense of conceptualism throughout, with "The Start Of Wars & The End Of Eras" opening the works with odd blends of FX-heavy synths, which then moves onto more beat-oriented pieces such as "Lie Low, Pick Your Moment" and the quasi-club friendly "The Watcher & The Watched" - our favourite moment in this diverse collection of sounds. Class.

Review: Hard-hitting Italo/darkwave from Italian group Kirlian Camera, a longtime act in the genres and one of their many defining bands. 'Communicate' is reissued from an initial release in 1983, and is as dubious and 'dark' as this kind of music can get, sounding like what would have happened to Talking Heads if each member had been given a hoverbike and rode it into a Miami sunset. Remixes from Flemming Dalum and Vanzetti & Sacco appear on the B-side - while brightening, warming and changing the instruments in parts, they prove little needs to be altered about the track in order to bring out its best parts.

Tail (1:33)
Review: Back in 1986, producer, vocalist and synthesizer wizard Koharu Kisaragi joined forces with Japanese electronic music legend Ryucihi Sakamoto for a collaborative 12" single. Now considered something of an off-kilter, head-in-the-clouds synth-pop classic by those of a Balearic persuasion, original copies regular change hands for large sums online. Hence this handy reissue from new label Lag. It begins with the mutant electronic funk of "Neo Plant" - think big '80s production, sampled noises, cascading synthesizer melodies, rubbery jazz-funk bass and decidedly post-punk vocals from Kisaragi, before moving on to the real standout highlight: a sublime chunk of folksy, piano-laden, vocal ambient entitled "Traumerei". Closer "Tail", a jaunty snippet containing traditional Sri Lankan instrumentation, is also superb.

Review: Knekelhuis is edging ever close to an impressive 50th release here with Naarm/Melbourne based producer KITA serving up three tracks of full of life, crispness and evocative emotions. Opener 'Ceramic' is awash with fluttery melodic motifs and ripping chords while distant vocal sounds float up top. It is utterly suspensory music and that vibe continues on 'Hazel', another floating and airy rhythm made from stringy synths and long, rubbery, rolling beats. 'Palace' closes out with another elegant and celestial sound, this time with percolating rhythms and skewed synths shining bright.

Sister Silver (16:42)
Review: The third release from Gratone is a live remix work featuring long-time collaborators and veterans Audun Kleive on percussion and Jan Bang on live sampling. It sees the young Norwegian label explore the spaces between between jazz and the dancefloor. Kleive and Bang 'tap into something innate that moves perpendicular to the techno ethos'. A side cuts "Azmari Woman" and "Azmari Beat" respectively are jagged and angular perspectives of afrobeat. On the flip, "Model Kit" is a disjointed pattern that gets properly off the grid in the vein of Mark Fell's SND project, while "Sister Silver" explores the A side's Afro rhythms in a less interrupted fashion but getting much more multitimbral in the process.

Review: Uganda keeps on giving, with the country currently at the forefront of sub-Saharan Africa's electronic underground: a fertile corner of the world in terms of emerging and established talent. Enter Hibotep, a Kampala-based rising star who was born and raised in Ethiopia but grew up in Somalia. Joining her on this EP, another one to know from the Ugandan capital, Hibo Elmi, a DJ, filmmaker, fashion designer, installation artist, rapper and studio head considered to be one of the most important female dance music makers on the continent right now. Running the gamut from 'Amber''s dark, hypnotising dub-hop moves, through 'Ebwino's sparse, weightless tones, which eventually give way to playful stepping rhythm beneath the relentless microphone skills of MC Will'stone, and 'Saffron' with its slow mo, exotic shuffle, if those responsible for this EP themselves reflect the incredible diversity of the city's scene, the sounds do the same.

Review: There's a not a huge amount we know about Koberman's Probandenausweis, other than the fact it sounds very good and will appeal to fans of shamanic, slo-mo, kosmische, drug chug, ambient and experimental electronica. It's a slow building, gradually evolving and immersive trip into a studio, with arrangements valuing silence and emptiness as much as the notes and beats themselves.
Opening on 'Sonnenschirmbrand', a ritualistic number that seems to have the whisper of forgotten souls in the backdrop of a tribalistic beat, layers of noises and percussion adding to the feeling of it taking root in your body well before the bass kicks in. Meanwhile, low ends rule on '32 Ngoesolo', in contrast to 'UH DT101', which uses a twisting synth line as its focal point, allowing other elements to build around it until we're locked into a head nodding oddity.
