Review: You could probably write a dissertation, if not full thesis, on the symbolism of this album. The biggest name in British chart pop compilations, NOW, turns its hand to spotlighting less obvious tracks from the decade that gave birth to the entire franchise. What this reflects, in terms of what constitutes 'popular' music today, and the questionable relevance of the UK Top 40, is a fascinating train of thought.
Musically speaking, the curators have done a decent job in selecting a broad range of artists, bands and sounds from the fertile grounds of the 1980s. Plenty here are household names - The Stranglers, Devo, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Smiths, Eurythmics, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. Nevertheless, you won't find 'Sweet Dreams' on the track list, and instead rarer archive material is allowed to shine: 'Vicious Games' rather than 'Oh Yeah' by Yello, The Cure's stunning 'A Forest' - we could go on.

Review: The NOW Series was a core part of the British music scene for many years from the 70s onwards. Its lovingly assembled compilations were a great wind into what was hot way before we all had access to every single bit of recorded music from the whole history of time all at the tip of our fingers. They continue to find relevance with their various collections and this one, Yearbook, focuses on the super sounds of the 80s, specifically 1988. Review: NOW Music is on with a big project here that sees the long-running label present a new series of vinyl compilations, NOW That's What I Call 80s Dancefloor. Each one is set to include what they deem to be "an essential collection of tracks" that they hope offer fair representation of a number of key musical movements and genres from across the 80s. The first volume presented the best in HI-NRG and POP and this one, a double album, focusses on Soul & Disco. All the names you'd expect are here from Prince to Daryl Hall & John Oates, Loose Ends to Rufus & Chaka Khan, so it is a useful one indeed.

Review: The legendary NOW series is still going strong despite the fact that the music industry and how we access and listen to music has changed immeasurably since they first started way back in the 17th century (maybe.) Now they focus on serving up complete compendiums and comprehensive overviews of entire genres or decades. This NOW: Yearbook 1990 comes across three slabs of orange vinyl with names like Dee-Lite, Dusty Springfield, Duran Duran, Bass-O-Matic and many more all present and correct. If nothing else it is a great trip down memory lane and fine resource for jobbing DJs.

Review: The Now collections have long been a staple of pretty much everyone's lives. In some cases, they are an introduction to the music of the day for young people looking to broaden their horizons and they have always nailed that MO. Now the series is so old they are also great for looking back on a time to get a good overview of what was going on. Here it is the 80s in the spotlight with endless amounts of singalong classics including from the likes of Phil Collins, Aretha Franklin, Bronchi Beat, Eurythmics, Fine Young Cannibals and many more. It's a fun and nostalgic listen, to be sure.

Review: Hardened music nerds may roll their eyes at the thought of the Now That's What I Call Music series turning its attention to disco, but this quintuple LP compilation does provides a great starting point for those dipping their toes into the sound for the first time or looking to grow their disco collection. A few needless pop hits aside, the set contains a wealth of sing-along party favourites ('Car Wash' by Rose Royce, Diana Ross's 'Upside Down', Lipps Inc's throbbing 'Funky Town' etc.) and genuine disco anthems that still get regular airings on club dancefloors today (Thelma Houston's 'Don't Leave Me This Way', Candi Staton's 'Nights On Broadway', Cheryl Lynn's 'Got To Be Real' and Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' included).
