Review: Louis Armstrong had an unparalleled impact on American popular music. Verve Records now celebrates his legacy with an all-new collection featuring his greatest hits and most timeless recordings. This release complements Louis In London, which highlights the influence on jazz of a man known for his joyful presence and who once said he was on a mission to spread happiness - this collection underscores that purpose. His contributions shaped the course of music history and that can be heard here in these gloriously catchy and indelible jazz sounds, many of which are well loved by even those without a passion for jazz.

If You Could See Me Now (4:50)
Review: Usually we note how many albums along a new release is, but by 'Trio '65', Bill Evans was so deep into his live LP-releasing career that we find it difficult to count out exactly which release number this one is. Now reissued on Verve's Acoustic Sounds series - dedicated to new vinyl remasters from analog tapes - the jazz pianist's masterful hand technique is given its most thorough audiophile's listen-in yet. Joined by bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker for this 1965 recording, this one is a typically noir and cigarette-smoked tour through both Evans originals and known standards, from 'Israel' and 'Elsa to 'Come Rain Or Come Shine'.

Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You (4:48)
Review: From the opening notes of the iconic 'Alamode,' this album bursts with beauty. It features the first sextet lineup of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and showcases a young Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. The band relentlessly drives the pace with each track, making a powerful impact throughout and for that rowans it became one of many Art Blakey classics. This Verve By Request release is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit, which as you will know means it sounds second to none.

Review: Recorded in 1962, Coleman Hawkins' quartet featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano, Major Holley on bass and Eddie Locke on drums delivers a captivating blend of upbeat tunes and smooth ballads. Tracks like 'Go Li'l Liza' and 'Swingin' Scotch' provide lively moments while a trio of ballads, including the recently and sadly passed legend that is Quincy Jones' 'Quintessence,' showcase the group's versatility. This Verve By Request edition is pressed on high-quality 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Records in Detroit so as usual offers a premium listening experience that captures the timeless essence of Hawkins' legendary sound.

Ptah, The El Daoud (13:57)
Turiya & Ramakrishna (8:17)
Blue Nile (6:59)
Mantra (16:31)
Review: The great Alice Coltrane was already widely revered by the time she released her third solo album Ptah, the El Daoud. It was written and recorded in 1970 in the basement of her house in Dix Hills on Long Island, New York and is noted for being the first record she made with horns. They are split between the two channels with Pharoah Sanders on the right bringing his abstract and transcendental sounds and Joe Henderson on the left bringing the intellectual vibe throughout. The post-bop sounds find Coltrane playing piano and harp receptions at the time were warm critically and with fans. The otherworldly sound is drenched in blues and perfect for some mindful meditations.

A Love Supreme (reissue) (gatefold 180 gram vinyl LP)
Cat: 501551. Rel: 05 Aug 22
Acknowledgement (part 1) (7:40)
Resolution (part 2) (7:20)
Pursuance (part 3) (10:42)
Psalm (part 4) (7:05)
Review: It goes without saying that 'A Love Supreme' is in the upper echelons of jazz history. A spiritual and emotional proclamation from American jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, the 32 minute runtime is a narrative of strife and struggle with addiction as well as the notable repetition of his riff in all 12 keys throughout the session in 'Acknowledgement'. In many ways you could say Coltrane's playing wasn't improvised at all, and you could argue that the session was better off for it. At the end of the half an hour, the narrative unwinds and Coltrane is declaring a faith to God, a musical thankyou to his faith that kept him true throughout his trials following a spiritual awakening in 1957 - what resulted was an undisputed musical masterpiece.

Review: Joao Donato is one of the most well known and prolific stars of Brasil's MPB (which is short for "musica populera brasileira") scene. He has toped several highly sought of albums and is still turning them out today despite already having assured his legacy. A Bad Donato is something of a move away from his Brazilian bossa nova roots - instead the album, which was recorded in LA, is electric and eclectic with funk, psychedelic pop and groovy Fender Rhodes driven sounds. This reissue on Verve By Request comes on nice heavyweight 180g vinyl with classics like 'The Frog' and 'Lunar Tune' still sounding fresh.

Review: A standout 1958-1959 recording by Johnny Hodges, Side by Side marked his continued solo work after taking the bold decision to leave the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra. This album harks back to the small-group sessions of the 1930s but with a twist as Ellington's absence on several tracks meant Billy Strayhorn stepped in on piano. Joining Hodges are jazz legends like Jo Jones, Roy Eldridge and Harry 'Sweets' Edison, who all add colour to the varied collection, which has been newly remastered for Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series. As a follow-up to 1959's Back to Back: Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges Play the Blues, it is another gem from the noted alto saxophonist.

Review: Ella Fitzgerald remains one of the most prominent voices in jazz and her album Let No Man Write My Epitaph, released by Acoustic Sounds in the early 60s, showcases the timeless brilliance of the legendary star. This new reissue on nice heavyweight wax from Verve brings forth the magic of Fitzgerald's voice in its purest form and allows you to revel in the emotional depth and vocal mastery that marked her career. Review: There remains great interest in the work of Astrud Gilberto, and much of it is being freshly remastered and pressed up on a constant basis. Her Look To The Rainbow is a captivating journey into the realms of what she did in the bossa nova and jazz. Released in 1966, it showcases Gilberto's ethereal vocals floating effortlessly over lush arrangements as tracks transport listeners to sun-kissed beaches with their infectious rhythms and melodic charm. Gilberto's voice often exudes a tender elegance, while the title track 'Look To The Rainbow' radiates with hope and optimism. With its seamless blend of Brazilian flair and jazz sensibility, this album remains a timeless classic.

Review: Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock sure did love to record music. The New Standard was his fortieth, four oh, album and not by a long way was it his last. It came in 1996 on the Verve label and is the sound of the great American musicians offering up his own jazz renditions of classic and more contemporary rock and r&b tunes. The star-studded sextet also features saxophonist Michael Brecker, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Dave Holland, percussionist Don Alias and drummer Jack DeJohnette with some of the original tunes by the likes of Peter Gabriel, Prince, Kurt Cobain and Stevie Wonder.

Review: Verve's audiophile-focused Acoustic Sounds series - championing jazz classics big and small, with a core view to showing them off at their crispest - continues with a well-selected reissue of John Coltrane's 'Crescent'. Verve are focusing on Coltrane's live albums in particular; 'Crescent' almost certainly tops 'Live At The Village Vanguard', again featuring the unparalleled performative chops of Trane's fellow jazz peers McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones - his Classic Quartet. Across only 5 tracks, the fab four achieve every possible blue-noted peak and trough, from extended trumpet, piano ('Bessie's Blues') and drum ('The Drum Thing') solos.

Review: At just 22, Samara Joy is still rather young to be kicking it in the jazz world. It's a genre that requires life to be lived somewhat before real emotions can be distilled into the mic. However, here she makes her Verve debut and showcases a voice that evokes great legends of the genre like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Her phrasing, tone and vocal control place her among these icons despite her youth and Samara's voice, already rich with timeless elegance, carries the weight of jazz's history while still feeling remarkably fresh and exciting. With this remarkable debut, she is surely poised to become a defining figure in jazz music.

Review: La Clave's self-titled album from 1973 is a refreshing mix of Latin rhythms and the vibrant sounds of the city of San Francisco. Formed by nine musicians from Mexico, Panama, Cuba and Puerto Rico with Benny Velarde at the helm, the group blended their rich cultural backgrounds with the soulful and experimental music scene of the Bay Area during that period. This unique mix created a joyful, energetic sound that still lures you in to this day, which is why this mini-classic gets reissued as part of the Verve By Request series.

Review: 1997's Slow Traffic to the Right found Bennie Maupin navigating between cerebral jazz and deep funk with style and ease. Though generally known for his abstract leanings and serious musical demeanour, here he showed a lighter side - not least because he is actually smiling on the album cover - while diving into grooves shaped by his time with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. With help from rhythm masters like Mike Clark and Paul Jackson, Maupin swaps out ECM austerity for signature Oakland bounce, so tracks like 'It Remains to Be Seen' and 'You Know the Deal' excel with newfound swagger without abandoning his jazz roots. It's a compelling pivot into accessible, funky and smart jazz soul.

Review: Jazz legend Max Roach recorded his Moon Faced and Starry Eyed album originally back in 1960. It now gets reissued some 60 years later and remains a jazz classic that for some reason is often rather overlooked. It features Roach alongside his mega-talented group with Ray Bryant, Julian Priester, and Stanley and Tommy Turrentine all playing while Abbey Lincoln is on vocals for two tracks. They are 'Never Leave Me' and a cover of Cole Porter's 'I Concentrate On You' and sit well with other gems like 'Come Rain Or Come Shine' and the standout title cut.

Love Is Everywhere (19:39)
To John (20:35)
Review: Finally reissued for its 50th anniversary, Love In Us All is a cosmic, uncompromising statement from legendary jazz cat Pharoah Sanders. This vital piece of the free jazz canon was released as his final Impulse! album and starts with 'Love Is Everywhere' which radiates transcendent beauty with layered horns, cascading piano and a repeated vocal mantra evoking the spirit of Coltrane's seminal 'A Love Supreme'. The flip, For John' is raw, chaotic and a furious outpouring of free jazz energy. Long out of print but here remastered, this essential release showcases Sanders' vision in its most fearless, spiritual form.

Review: Ben Webster and Associates marked the final collaboration between tenor saxophone legends Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins, with veteran Budd Johnson joining them. The album was originally released in 1959 and featured a lineup including trumpeter Roy Eldridge, guitarist Les Spann, pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jo Jones. It has many timeless standards like 'Time After Time' and Ellington's 'In a Mellow Tone' along with three original Webster compositions, all of which have been transferred from the original analogue tapes and remastered. The album served somewhat as a tribute to Lester Young, a tenor master from the same era who had died under a month before the session.

Wes was said to be one of the best live performers in the game and this is real evidence of that - it finds him at the heights of his brilliant and influential guitar playing and is a record that captures him playing with more drive and confidence than ever. Smokin' Wynton Kelly does a fine job of supporting on this most accomplished and essential record.
