Soulful Strut (Organ mix)
Review: 45trio share their first release for Bloom Musi, this time around covering the stone-cold classic 'Am I The Same Girl', co-written by Eugene Record, of Chi-Lites fame, with Sonny Sanders, for singer Barbara Acklin. In '92, Swing Out Sister covered the album, but this latest rendition hears 45trio's Momoko Suzuki and Reiko Oda lend it a sweeter style by comparison. This dainty, vivid young soul morsel is a fine-tuned fine tune, one you'll undoubtedly want to continue humming along to long after its central, unmistakable hook - transposed up at least two octaves here - has played out. The B-side includes a special instrumental version, no less, released under the name of Young-Holt Unlimited - this one brings the hook line to an organ part, demonstrating the written song's potent and versatile instrumental repertoire.

Review: Led by Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland, the Clarke-Boland Sextet was made up of further musical talents from across Europe and the United States such as Boland, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Joe Harris, and Sadi. The group played a pivotal role in shaping the European jazz scene of the 60s, never more so than with their timeless Music For The Small Hours record in 1967. It takes in an array of influences and includes standards like Burt Bacharach's 'Wives & Lovers' as well as more Brazilian and Afro-Cuban groovers like Luiz Bonfa's 'Ebony Samba'. The original compositions shine too, with Shihab's 'Please, Don't Leave' showcasing his vocal talents and adding a real depth. Overall this is jazz that radiates sophistication and relaxation and makes for a refined listen.

They also bring in more contemporary compositions which results in an utterly original sound and great gateway to some of the world's oldest literary works. They recently finished a debut full-length album and now the single 'Blue Collar' from it comes on limited edition vinyl. Review: 'Imprevisto' by Bossa Tres and Ana Rosely's 'Skim Dum Dum Dum' receive well-deserved attention in their remastered reissue by Mr Bongo. Bossa Tres's track, featured as the final piece on their 1965 'Em Forma!' LP, stands out as an unmistakable Brazilian jazz classic. Opening with a dramatic intro and a hypnotic piano line, the song evolves with panned percussion and upright bass, showing the band's refined musicality honed from their early days touring jazz clubs in the USA. This 7" release marks a significant reissue of Bossa Tres's sophisticated sound in a concise format. On Side-2, Ana Rosely's 'Skim Dum Dum Dum' from 1984, originally released by RGE Discos, adds a different flavor with its infectious groove and enigmatic charm. Despite limited information about Rosely, her releases have become sought after for their rarity and musical quality. With 'Skim Dum Dum Dum,' her talent shines brightly within the unique style of Brazilian music. This remastered edition with refreshed artwork offers collectors and enthusiasts a chance to rediscover these gems of Brazilian jazz and music history.

Review: Spiritual jazz fans are going to rather excited about this new one from the hard working people at P-Vine over in Japan: Chicago saxophonist Prince Billy Marge Wright's finest work, 'Summer Love', is now arriving on its own 7" for the first time ever. It is previously lost material that showcases his next level sound though here featuring mainly keyboard instruments as opposed to his more usual saxophone, but that only makes it all the more uplifting. On the flipside is a remix that is just as rare so this one really is an essential record for your collection.

Something Special
Review: A strikingly unique dance music project from Nagasaki producer, DJ and sound director Keisuke Yamazoe, Aflex Combo has always been an impressive project, straddling several EPs stretching back to 2002 - and all centring, in the artist's own words, on heavy funk beats and obscure jazz and Latin grooves. Jazz Roomn Records now release his cover-remix of the underground club classic 'Hibaros', originally by B&G Rhythm (Donny Beck & Steve Gutierrez, featuring Bobby Lyle). Several unusual time signatures modulate across its A-sided, dancey groove - don't be fooled, things need not settle into a 4/4 repetition to be worthy of a ball - whilst B-sider 'Something Special' lets things slack a little more, letting several, live-recorded drum loops rest on top of one another, while a sort of glockenspiel/celeste-esque instrument tinkles over the top. Something special indeed.

Review: Pharoah Sanders recorded Thembi in the winter of 1970-71, amid sessions with Alice Coltrane that would culminate in her seminal Journey In Satchidananda album. The same profound spirituality that imbued Coltrane's masterpiece with an aura of serene majesty also permeates Thembi. One of the standout tracks, 'Astral Traveling,' originated from a serendipitous encounter with a Fender Rhodes electric piano. Upon arriving at the California studio, while his bandmates set up their instruments, Sanders noticed the piano and, driven by curiosity, began experimenting with its sounds. This track, with its ethereal quality and innovative use of the electric piano, captures the exploratory spirit and transcendent quality that define Thembi, making it a cornerstone of Sanders' discography and the blueprint to the serendipitous magic of musical experimentation. Thembi offers something very unique for the time in jazz music.

Cosmic Funk
Review: A rare jazz-funk 12" documenting the timeless work of an epistemic classic. Lonnie Liston Smith's 'Expansions' is normally known as an album, but it's only the central theme, composed first and without an initial ambition to craft a full-length around it, which said album took its name. The high strings of the track 'Expansions' bring a filmic tension to an otherwise louche funk line, laying down a stark contrast that more than justifies its use as the 1974 album's opening track and namesake. On the B-side here, however, comes not one from Smith's Expansions, but rather another opener, 'Cosmic Funk', which was released just six months earlier and documents a much wilder, Afrobeat-adjacent wah-fest, with Smith himself referring to the track and resultant record as an example of 'sci-fi funk'.

Thereafter, it enjoyed a second bout of popularity after being picked up by the trailblazing rare groove scene in London. Review: Wayne Shorter's Juju, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in August 1964 and released in July 1965, resonating with profound influences from John Coltrane. The album's allure lies not merely in technical strength but in its emotive depth, transcending analytical descriptions. Shorter's tenor saxophone exudes a brooding intensity, marked by sharp tonality and deliberate, weighty phrasing, punctuated by rapid flourishes into higher registers that convey a sense of restrained urgency. His compositions, characterised by hypnotic, repetitive motifs, unfold a richly textured musical adventure. The interplay between Shorter and Tyner on Juju reveals a unique dynamic, distinct from Shorter's collaborations with Herbie Hancock on other Blue Note recordings. The album shows varying ensemble configurations across Shorter's discography, each contributing to its nuanced musical landscape. This Blue Note Classic Series reissue, mastered from the original tapes, preserves the album's timeless appeal.

Birchall's dedication to his craft is evident in his role as the sole creator of the album, handling all instruments, recording, and mixing. Purple Sun
Review: EABS' forthcoming album, Reflections of Purple Sun, marks a significant return to their roots while paying homage to the iconic figure of Polish jazz, Tomasz Stanko. Stanko's album, Purple Sun, recorded fifty years ago, heavily emphasized rhythm, serving as the central element of his work. EABS' interpretation of this landmark album is a profound study in rhythm, aptly reflected in the title. Recorded in Stanko's former residence in Warsaw, where his presence still lingers palpably, the album captures the essence of his musical legacy. The band's meticulous attention to detail is evident, from Marek Pedziwiatr's use of Stanko's piano to Jakub Kurek's selection of Stanko's last trumpet, the Monette XLT+. This instrument, chosen for its lively and spacious sound, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Stanko's artistic vision. Astigmatic Records' comprehensive booklet accompanying the record provides further insight into the album's creation, while the cover art pays homage to Pia Burri's original concept. Overall, Reflections of Purple Sun is a compelling and evocative journey through the rhythmic landscapes of Polish jazz, honoring Stanko's legacy while forging new paths in musical exploration.

Decamping for a week-long recording session in the legendary recording studio complex East West, the fable goes that an uninterrupted spate of session magic ensued, out from which five acid jazz and soul bursters sprang forth. A curt selection of just five tracks, of which there were many more recorded during the LA session, the likes of 'Purify', 'It Must Be Love' and 'When The Game Is Played On You' span the whole gamut of modern soul, from the bright to the bare-bones but beguiling.

Review:  Zy The Way hail from Taiwan and are recognised as pioneers of the jazz scene in Asia. Their signature style is to infuse their work with ancient Chinese poetry and their first outing 'A Different Destiny,' reimagined 3,000-year-old poems curated by Confucius and earned them plenty of plaudits. Now, they unveil two EPs as a prelude to their upcoming album. Collaborating with renowned remixers who operate at the jazz-electronic crossroads, they present 'Ten Acres' with a remarkable remix by Mark de Clive Lowe. Maintaining jazz's essence while igniting the dancefloor, this EP bridges East and West, past and present and shows Zy The Way as a transformative musical force who are pushing boundaries.

Review: Hiromasa Suzuki, a legendary composer and arranger, has been a vital figure in the Japanese music scene, contributing significantly to jazz, film, television, and commercials. Known for his innovative approach, Suzuki was deeply involved with influential artists like Terumasa Hino, Akira Ishikawa, and Jiro Inagaki during their most groundbreaking periods. His 1976 album High-Flying is a expertly crafted example to his forward-thinking creativity and remains a cornerstone of the WaJazz genre. Produced by Jiro Inagaki, High-Flying features a stellar lineup, including Shuichi Murakami on drums, Akira Okazawa on electric bass, and Masayoshi Takanaka on electric guitar. Suzuki's masterful compositions and arrangements shine through tracks like 'Screwdriver' and 'Scramble,' blending pre-fusion and crossover elements seamlessly. The album also includes contributions from Jun Fukamachi on keyboards and synthesiser, and Kayoko Ishu on vocals for select tracks. Recorded at Nippon Columbia Studio No. 2, this sought-after reissue captures the essence of Suzuki's groundbreaking work. Act fast to secure a copy of this essential masterpiece.

Review: Nobuo Tsukahara, known as Nobuo Hara, is a legendary Japanese saxophonist who gained fame in 1951 with his big band, the Sharp & Flats. Over their illustrious career, they recorded more than a hundred albums. Hozan Yamamoto, a revered shakuhachi (traditional Japanese flute) player, was honoured as a Living National Treasure in 2002. Their first collaboration was a live recording from the 1967 Newport Jazz Festival, leading to their seminal studio album, New Jazz in Japan, released in 1968. This album, now reissued for the first time since 1971, showcases the unique blend of Hara's tenor sax and Yamamoto's shakuhachi, underpinned by the powerful Sharp & Flats ensemble. The result is a compelling fusion of jazz and traditional Japanese music, creating a distinct and enoyable sound. Presented in gatefold packaging, this reissue allows a new generation to experience the innovative and harmonious interplay between these two master musicians.

Review: Renowned bassist Leroy Vinnegar is celebrated for popularising the so-called "walking bass" style in jazz. He collaborated with luminaries like Chet Baker, Eddie Harris, Les McCann, Lee Konitz, and Stan Getz in his career, and despite its initial obscurity, his groundbreaking 1973 album 'Glass Of Water,' featuring Dwight Dickerson on the Rhodes and Wurlitzer, has resurfaced in recent years. It is now a sought-after gem for jazz collectors and crate diggers worldwide and so On High presents the inaugural reissue of this forgotten classic. It has been meticulously remastered and pressed on audiophile vinyl to capture the ethereal essence of Vinnegar's timeless sound.

Review: Meshell Ndegeocello's upcoming album, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, is a profound tribute to the iconic author on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Following her Grammy-winning debut on Blue Note Records, Ndegeocello co-produced this album with guitarist Chris Bruce, enlisting a talented ensemble including vocalist Justin Hicks, saxophonist Josh Johnson and others. The album's first singles, 'Travel' and 'Raise the Roof,"' offer a glimpse into its powerful blend of music and spoken word. With contributions from poet Staceyann Chin and others, Ndegeocello's work transcends mere tribute, offering a transformative experience that is part music, part sermon, part celebration, and part call to action. No More Wate promises to be a genre-defying, spiritually enriching journey that honors Baldwin's legacy while adding a unique musical perspective. This album is poised to be a standout in Ndegeocello's already illustrious career.

Jazz In
The New Orleans Sound
Review: Diego Ruiz aka DFRA returns with a new four-track live jazzdance quencher, 'Jazz In'. Indeed, jazz is, at present, 'in', contrasting to the various moments in history (perhaps not linearly) in which it has been 'out'. Of course, both 'in' and 'out' concur simultaneously, and mutually uphold each other. The nominal in-ness of this record suggests a sense of measured knowing that outness simply cannot partake in; and whether this is really true is beside the point, because the record itself brings a decidedly measured sound, one that basks abaft in bottomy brasses, insouciant piano redoubts, distant kazoo tarns and mesmerically kicky dance movements. Little does Ruiz know that the boundary of in and out is always collapsible, reversible, and he even orchestrates this himself; by the time we reach 'The New Orleans Sound', the record's professed internal genius has nonetheless turned us, the listener, outside in, inside out.

Review: Lee Morgan's Taru, recorded in 1968 but released in 1980, showcases the trumpeter at a pivotal point, exploring a variety of styles with a stellar band. This album is a gem, featuring George Benson's inspired solos on three tracks and Bennie Maupin's debut collaboration with Morgan, setting the stage for future classics like Caramba! and Live at the Lighthouse. The rhythm section, consisting of John Hicks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums, delivers a masterclass in hard bop. The album kicks off with 'Avotcja One,' a modal jazz piece that sets a dynamic tone. 'Get Yourself Together' charges forward with hard bop energy, while 'Haeschen' and 'Taru, What's Wrong With You?' showcase Morgan's ability to craft beautiful ballads. The gospel-tinged 'Dee Lawd' and the funky boogaloo 'Durem' add stylistic variety, making the six-song set a rich display of jazz. This Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue is a true audiophile delight. Produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes, the 180g vinyl pressing at RTI ensures pristine sound quality. The deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket adds a touch of elegance.

Review: Patrice Rushen's Prelusion marks her dazzling debut into the jazz world, originally released in 1974 on Prestige Records and now reissued on vinyl here in 2024. Before her r&b fame, Rushen showcased her talents as a jazz pianist on this album, backed by luminaries like Joe Henderson on saxophone. The record effortlessly blends post-bop with elements of jazz fusion, highlighting Rushen's versatility across acoustic and electric keyboard. Her performances on acoustic piano and electric keyboards reflect a strong influence from Herbie Hancock, evident in tracks such as 'Haw-Right Now' and 'Shortie's Portion.' Despite her shift to r&b in 1978, Prelusion stands as an early promise in jazz music.

Review: The pioneering American jazz trumpeter Howard McGhee was one of the first to do bebop and this is often noted as a legacy for which he never truly did receive credit by the history books. Maggie's Back In Town!!, however, released in 1961 on the Contemporary label, is the most likely candidate for piercing this occlusive remainder; it's a tight, light tsk-tsker, on which McGhee's playing is never once heard getting ahead of itself or biting off more than it can chew. The mood is laconic and muted, as if to demonstrate McGhee's relaxed persona and long-awaited return to town. Phineas Newborn Jr (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums) add to the hoo-hah with their virtuosic but subtle sang-froid.

Review: Thad Jones' The Magnificent Thad Jones is a stunning album that beautifully showcases the beauty of hard bop. Released in 1956, it reflects the era's evolving jazz landscape, influenced by modern jazz pioneers like Horace Silver and Miles Davis. The album's tracks, including original compositions like 'Billy-Boo' and 'Thedia,' exude a relaxed yet lively vibe, typical of hard bop. Jones' trumpet work shines throughout, displaying a remarkable blend of relaxation and intensity in his solos. The ensemble's chemistry, especially between Detroit-raised musicians like pianist Barry Harris and Jones, is palpable, supported by the solid foundation laid by Percy Heath and Max Roach. Rudy Van Gelder's recording in Hackensack, New Jersey, harnasses the warmth and depth of Jones' trumpet sound, adding to the album's allure. The Magnificent Thad Jones is a timeless gem that continues to enchant jazz enthusiasts with its impeccable execution and rich musicality.

Review: Way Out West is Sonny Rollins' 1957 foray into jazz with a visually Western edge. Famous for its novel use of the 'strolling' technique - on which the esteemed American tenor saxophonist only solos with bass and drums, and drops the piano and guitar accompaniment - the sound produced is a uniquely up-close one. This Craft reissue captures that very same curious mood of Rollins' first adventure"out West", which we vicariously experience through this record.

Head Rock
Review: Head Rock by Jiro Inagaki & His Soul Media offers a nostalgic journey into the Japanese jazz scene of 1970. Reminiscent of the film library albums from Italy, this album blends jazzy instrumentation with psychedelic rock elements, creating a unique sonic tapestry. While not a widely known Japanese album from the era, Head Rock provides pleasant grooves and moments of headphone bobbing enjoyment. The 2018 reissue on Columbia/Takt Jazz comes in a brilliant gatefold cover, making it a worthy addition to any collection. With original copies demanding steep prices, the reissue offers a more affordable option without compromising on quality. Head Rock is a worthwhile exploration of vintage Japanese jazz-rock fusion.

Tatum Group Masterpieces (reissue)
Cat: AGUE 164.1. Rel: 13 Sep 24
Review: This album recorded by Tatum and Webster in 1956 came just prior to Tatum's passing less than two months later. Revered as a masterpiece, the dynamic interplay between Webster's blend of aggression and lyricism and Tatum's flamboyance and delicacy creates a captivating encounter, with Callendar and Douglass providing impeccable support. Reissued previously by Essential Jazz Classics, this new edition adds bonus tracks from a 1953 Tatum solo session and four numbers from a summit meeting between Webster and Teddy Wilson. The opener sets a languid tempo, diverging from the breakneck pace of many bebop jams, establishing the album's relaxed vibe. And even as later cuts quicken the pace, there's an underlying sense of ease that permeates throughout. Tatum's cascades of notes serve as ornamental accents rather than urgent directives, while Webster, despite the excess reverb of the era, focuses on melody.

City Swamp
Cat: NS 0054LP.
Review: Jake Long's debut under his own name, City Swamp, is a long-awaited arrival, especially for those familiar with his work leading Maisha. As the drummer and composer for Maisha, Long was instrumental in creating some of the finest UK jazz releases, including There is a Place, which featured luminaries like Nubya Garcia and Amane Suganami. City Swamp not only showcases Long's talent but also serves as a continuation and expansion of the ideas explored in There is a Place. While Maisha's sound was celebratory, City Swamp delves into more dissonant themes with a psychedelic twist, particularly evident in the epic track 'Ideological Rubble.' Despite being a solo project, City Swamp still features many Maisha members, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines Long's work. With this album, Long firmly establishes himself as a phenomenally talented artist with a unique musical vision, making City Swamp an exceptional debut.
