Jibiti (Bosq remix) (4:34)
Jibiti (Bosq remix instrumental) (4:33)
Review: Kaleta's first full-length collaboration with the Super Yamba Band, 2019's "Medaho", was something of a slept-on treat: a fiendishly psychedelic Afrobeat affair that was every bit as heavy, colourful and vibrant as you'd expect. Here, one of the album's standout tunes gets the remix treatment courtesy of long-serving, party-starting musical fusionist Bosq. The Ubiquity and Soul Clap stalwart delivers vocal and instrumental passes of "Jibiti", both of which make great use of Kaleta's vocals and Super Yamba Band's fuzzy, Fela Kuti-style horn lines. Bosq's groove is closer in feel to Afro-disco than the original album version, though the bassline, organ stabs and vocals are pure Afrobeat gold.

Bongo Rock (2:38)
Review: Back in 2011, Shawn Lee recorded an album in tribute to the legendary Incredible Bongo Band - whose extra-percussive cuts and cover versions played a key role in the early development of hip-hop - under the name the Incredible Tabla Band. Here, two of the more sought-after cuts from the hard-to-find set appear on seven-inch for the first time. Lee's take on "Apache", in which Indian instrumentation, Hammond organ licks and a touch of psych-rock fuzziness are thrown into the mix with incendiary results - is a guaranteed dancefloor hit. That said, his "Tabla Rock" take on "Bongo Rock" is arguably even better, and certainly a little more revolutionary in terms of the sounds you hear. It's naturally rooted in bongo and tabla-powered funk, but attractively veers off script at key moments.

Summer Madness Part 1 & 2 (reissue) (gold vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: FUR 7377COLOURRE. Rel: 15 Oct 20
Summer Madness (part 1) (2:58)
Summer Madness (part 2) (2:37)
Review: Second time around for the Soul Surfers' superb cover of jazz-funk classic 'Summer Madness', which first hit stores in September 2019. This time round, it comes pressed on gold-coloured vinyl, though you'll have to act fast to secure a copy. It's worth doing just that though, because it sees the Californian act re-imagining one of the smoothest and most seductive cuts in the Kool & The Gang canon as a languid chunk of laidback instrumental soul complete with crunchy drums, elongated lead guitar solos and some suitably spacey analogue synth sounds. The luscious and lazy A-side version is backed by a 'Part Two' take that's a little more stripped-back, raw and heavy.

Summer Madness (part 1) (2:59)
Summer Madness (part 2) (2:37)
Review: Ubiquity is back with another of its two part 7"s, this time from contemporary soul group The Soul Surfers. Experts at covering the greats, they recently turned their hand to a classic from The JB's, while this time out it is Kool & The Gang's classic "Summer Madness" that gets a deep-cut and sexy make over. Part 1 is a sensuous slow burner with downtempo drums and heavenly guitar playing, while part 2 has harder drum grooves and dreamy , psyched-out guitars. It's another ageless rework that you need in your life.

You Can Run (But You Can't Hide) From My Love (part 1) (3:34)
You Can Run (But You Can't Hide) From My Love (part 2) (2:07)
Review: Russian funk crew The Soul Surfers return to Ubiquity with the first single from their forthcoming debut album. Hooking up with Stones Throw vocalist Myron & E, the band provide a rigid Rhodes-based groove that builds momentum along with the horns but is spacious enough for Myron to do his business. Flip for the second side of the tale as the keys are elements are switched out in sequence, giving a cross-section view of how The Soul Surfers construct their compositions. We can't wait for the album.

Bring Back Peace To The World (part 1) (2:45)
Bring Back Peace To The World (part 2) (2:31)
Review: With the state of world politics at the moment, we could all do with the occasional pick me up. Enter The Pharaohs who link with Chicago natives Spencer Jackson Family for "Bring Back Peace To The World", which gets a timely reissue on Ubiquity. It's a spiritual bit of jazz funk with sax lines to get you grooving, deep soul vocals that stir you from the inside out and gospel overtones that get anyone ready to rejoice. Each part is as essential as the other and despite adding up to just over five minutes in total, both cuts will no doubt enhance your mood.

Outer Space Bossa
Review: Not content with supplying the funkosphere with a veritable glut of grit laden sevens under The Soul Surfers name, Russia's premiere funk troupe have been known to operate under a variety of pseudonyms too. If you were one of those unfortunates that missed out on their sole excursion as Sputnik 1 some two years ago, West Coast funk forbearers Ubiquity have done the smart thing and repressed this gem of a 7inch for those in need of some cosmic healing. Delving deep into the psyche funk stratosphere, both the organ heavy A Side "The Whole Earth" and the slower flip "Outer Space Bossa" will leave you craving more Sputnik 1 material - come on guys!

Practice What You Preach (Zernell & Rahaan edit)
Bump & Hustle Music (Zernell & Rahaan edit)
Review: The Luv N' Haight Edits series launched in style earlier this year, enlisting Nico Jaar and 78 Edits to rework two Mike James Kirkland classics to tie in with the annual Record Store Day festivities. This second volume sees Chicago duo Rahaan and Zernell tackle music from Tommy Stewart's self titled 1976 album, recently reissued by the Ubiquity sub label. If you're not familiar with Stewart's work then you need to check that LP, one of the defining releases of the pre-disco era and two of its highlights are given respectful touchdowns on this clear 12". There's an obvious deftness to the way Rahaan and Zernell loop up the intro bars of "Practice What You Preach" before dropping in those killer strings and then launching into the song itself, while the dirty funk of "Bump & Hustle Music" is only made more apparent by the duo's subtle arrangements. Big 12" for the discotheques!

Review: Osei Korankye hails from Accra, Ghana and is a talented musician known as one of his homeland's last remaining seperewa musiciana. These tracks throw it back to the heyday of the sound in 1970 but were recorded in Brooklyn, NY as well as Accra when Korankye linked up with Super Yamba bandleader and drummer Daniel Yount for a few gigs in New York City in 2017. It was an effortless collaboration that resulted in some super psychedelic funk tunes that are designed for carefree dancing.

Running In The Rain (original version)
Cause I Love Love You (Paolo Scotti & Giacomo Silvestri Sun Sound re-edit)
Cause I Love Love You (original mix)
Review: Commencing on Record Store Day last year, Ubiquity's Luv N'Haight Edit series has wisely taken a universal approach calling on everyone from Pitchfork darling Nico Jaar to Gifted & Blessed via Carlos Nino to rework material from the label's Luv N'Haight catalogue. Volume 6 arrives and it's the turn of Sun Sound Records owner, edit master and renowned record collector Paolo Scotti to dig through the Luv N'Haight. Scotti's focus lands on two Turner Brothers jams in the shape of "Running In The Rain" and "Cause I Love You" and his reworks in cahoots with Giacomo Silvestri echo the edits of disco days gone by - think Walter Gibbons, John Morales. Originals of both tracks are here should you feel the need for immediate comparison.

Review: Headed up by Benin-born Kaleta - a guitarist who has previously worked with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Lauryn Hill - Super Yamba Band is a New York collective whose decidedly psychedelic fusions of Afrobeat, Highlife and Afro-funk have been getting rave reviews. "Medaho" is their debut album and it more than lives up to the hype. With Kaleta's variously fuzzy, sun-kissed and flash-fried licks to the fore, the band trips its way through nine mostly dancefloor-friendly workouts that wrap heavy funk instrumentation, rousing horns and Afrobeat style organ riffs around polyrhythmic drums that recall the distinctive swing of Tony Allen. It's a stylistic blend that guarantees results, as the sheer volume of highlights triumphantly proves.

Review: Whether he was leading the Uhuru Dance Band or the Ogyataana Show Band, Ghanaian flutist Oscar Sulley was nothing short of an Afrofunk pioneer. Taking his east/west fusion right to the top, one of his tracks was picked up in Hollywood for the Last King Of Scotland. Jemelatu was one of his later offerings. Landing in 1980 on Delta, it was a private recording conducted with a full orchestra and conducted by John O'Connor. Regularly fetching over $500 a copy, Ubiquity have now reissued it to ensure its rich orchestration, lavish strings, heartfelt vocals and instantly engaging, ultimately positive arrangements are felt by as many of us as possible. A very special release.
