Sofrito Island Series: Madagascar
Cat: SSS 018. Rel: 07 Oct 16
Vetson Androy - "Mavandeza" (3:55)
Joajoby - "Tarantasy Maitso" (3:30)
Review: You can rely on the Sofrito label to unearth the most daring of dance music from the most obscure corners of the earth. This latest instalment lands on Madagascar's shores, a stunning landscape with relatively little known about its music from the typical Westerner; as usual, though, we are pleasantly surprised by what we discover on this totally killer two-tracker. The sound is called Salegy, a style originating from the island's North-Western quarters, and that evokes fast 6/8 rhythms accompanied by steely percussion folds and tribalistic chanting: "Mavandeza" is a deep and mystical song performed by the Vetson Androy outfit, who were famous proponents of the sound at the height of its popularity in 1978. The B-side is from tenders later, and Joajoby's "Tarantasy Maitso" is another glorious slice of vocal-led percussion in the island's loose and spiritual style. Unmissable.

Atravessar
Baiana
Los Chicos
Review: Clocking up their 4th single for Freestyle, Jazz Juice return once more with a 12" sampler for their forthcoming album 52nd Street. Having wowed DJs and dancefloors the world over with their fresh fusion of traditional bossanova, jazz and Latin styles with modern sounds and production, the time is right for a Jazz Juice longplayer. Featuring 13 tracks (including 2 exclusive new Jazz Juice remixes) should be hitting stores mid November. First up, 'Atravessar' is an uptempo slice of contemporary bossanova, featuring the vocals of Tamara Maria and an impressive piano solo from Patrick Herrickhuizen! Sure to appeal to fans of Koop, Nicola Conte and Bebel Gilberto. On the flip 'Baiana's' mellow samba house style swings like a lost Los Amigos Invisibles track, whilst 'Los Chicos' (inspired by the work of Chico Hamilton) features the deft guitar work of the New Cool Collective's Anton Guidsmit and Praful on tenor sax.

Deal With It
What Kind Of Man
Review: Jimmy Lane recorded this single in the summer of 1969 in upstate New York. The title stems from arriving at the recording studio without any lyrics prepared, and when asked by the producer what he was going to sing he replied "Oh, we’ll deal with it later". Another Funk Classic from Funk 45.

Love Love Love (feat Anonjondos, Sage Francis & DJ Mekalek)
Love Love Love (instrumental mix)
Sleep dr Bust (instrumental mix)
Afternoon Connection (instrumental mix)
Review: Great release from Goodfoot records. This label has been doing good things for a year or so and we expect this form to continue. Joey Beats is a varied 7" EP including the brilliant "Love, Love, Love" which features Sage Francis on vocal duties over a pysch rock styled hip-hop break and chorus refrain. The rest of the EP is pure quality instrumental business, with heavy rock/funk basslines and drums being used to great effect to create some hypnotic, tripped out music not unlike the recent Trapdoor LP/CD on Disjoint!

John Cameron Quartet - "Troublemaker"
Mike Westbrook Concert Band - "Original Peter"
Review: Two ultra rare british jazz sides. These are not the album versions but taken from the even scarcer original single releases. "Troublemaker" is a tougher percussive work-out whilst Original Peter is a danceable yet introspective slice of funky jazz.

Do What Comes Natural
Cat: CHAT 223. Rel: 06 Apr 17
Do What Comes Natural (2:51)
Live & Let Live (2:38)
Review: Not to be confused with pianist Jimmy Jones and his trio, Chicago's Jimmy Jones was an in-house songwriter who emerged onto the stage himself throughout the late 60s to mid 70s. Releasing some of his most remarkable pieces in 1970, here are two of his earliest cuts on Deke Atkins' short-lived label Deke imprint. "Do What Comes Natural" pitches him as the band leader with a tight groove on blast in the background as he really lays down a gutsy delivery. "Live & Let Live" reveals Jimmy's more sensitive side both lyrically and soulfully as his tone conjure feels on a Johnson level. Snap it up.

What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?
Cat: DAP 1019. Rel: 11 Nov 20
What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes? (4:40)
This Land Is Your Land (4:28)
Review: Daptone recently released a killer collection of archival cover versions by in-house band the Dap-Kings and their sadly departed lead singer Sharon Jones. One of the headline attractions on that set, the band's righteous, call-to-arms soul version of Woody Guthrie's folk anthem 'This Land Is Our Land', is also featured on this must-have reissue of a "45" that first dropped in 2004. It's superb, but even better is A-side 'What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?', a floor-friendly conscious soul/funk crossover written and recorded at the height of the second Gulf War with Iraq. As usual, Jones' impeccable lead vocal is supported brilliantly by the band's fiery instrumentation and Bosco Mann's fuzzy, sixties-style production.

How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?
Cat: DAP 1020. Rel: 11 Nov 20
How Long Do I Have To Wait For You? (vocal mix) (4:03)
How Long Do I Have To Wait For You? (instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Remarkably, 16 years have passed since Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings first released 'How Long Do I Have To Wait', one of the revivalist soul and funk band's sweetest and most heartfelt songs. Written and produced by Dap-Kings main man Bosco Mann, the song features one of Jones' most evocative and impassioned lead vocals, as well as a pleasingly laidback, loose-limbed groove, jazzy guitars and pitch-perfect horn blasts. As it did back in 2004, this reissue pairs the peerless vocal version with Mann's typically fuzzy, lovingly crafted instrumental take. If you missed out first time round, make sure you grab a copy.

Better Things
Window Shopping
Review: Daptone drops a new single from their premier funk act Sharon Jones & The Dapkings, with two tracks lifted from their latest album I Learned The Hard Way. Sharon's catchy melodic vocal on ''Better Things'' is assisted by rhythmic hand claps, cascading piano lines, brass stabs and backing vocals from The Dapkings. On the flipside is a silky deep soul cut with Sharon's vocals telling the tale of her wandering eyed window shopping man!

Neckbone (feat Sly Johnson) (4:12)
Mano A Mano (4:56)
Review: Fans of Anthony Joseph rejoice! This Neckbone 7" heralds the news Heavenly Sweetness are planning a fifth album from the Trinidadian jazz funker!! Excitingly the title cut finds Joseph working with the master Syl Johnson with devastating results! The steel drum heavy pulse is the back bone for the lyrical poetry of Joseph, chanted in pure Caribbean style, and complemented on the chorus by Sly Johnson. A track made for the dancefloor with a big catchy bassline. On the B side, Joseph lays down the percussive free jazz blinder "Mano A Mano", executed in the purest style of the iconic Last Poets!!

Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel - "Better Living" (feat Stuart Lisbie)
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - "Brass In Africa"
Review: Serious funk vibes abound on this repress from 2011. London duo Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel lay down a stripped-back bass n' breakbeat combo allowing full emphasis on the tightly plucked bass, tight horn noodles and chanty Jay Kay flavoured singing. Think Kraak & Smaak circa Boogie Angst with just a bit more trad JBs style funk. Flip for an equally funky adventure courtesy of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Giving the Hot 8 Brass Band a run for their money, it's a sweeping series of dreamy horns that can't help but suck you deep into the mix.

Music Feel The Soul (original mix (incl. intro))
Review: There's no doubt that Marvin Gaye is a legend, but it's thanks to Erick Sermon's recent use of Gaye as a sample that brought upon a resurgence of interest in his amazing vocals. On this 12" you've got a nice laid back groove which uses the 'Music' sample to genius effect, resulting in a beautiful spaced out track ideal for lounging. Essential.

Review: The music of Jazzinho has slipped into our musical consciousness and into the record boxes of DJs worldwide. Jazzinho have successfully balanced an impressive live dimension with the need to make an impact on the dancefloors of a constantly shape shifting club scene. Their globally renowned self titled debut album, released in 2004, enlisted the skills of musicians like Da Lata's Chris Franck and it reflected Guida's passion for the music of Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan alongside Brasilians like Joyce, Gilberto Gil and Azymuth. Jazz maintains a powerful role at the core of Jazzinho's sound and the influence singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone meshes with the indomitable spirit of "New Thing" instrumentalists like McCoy Tyner and Archie Shepp. So now in 2006, they bring you their new album - "Atlas". Having been holed up in an East End shed with top Brazilian Producer and musician Ed Motta, they have crafted 12 tracks of beautiful Brazilian musicianship and song writing. From the opening track "The Lagoon Monster", this album shows off Guida's stunning vocal. The rhythm and fender Rhodes drive us through a carnival of sun-drenched songs.

Borboleta (Electro Coco Jazz Juice dub mix)
Review: Jazz Juice is his latest collaboration with Electro Coco production partner Alain Eskinasi. Another veteran of the scene, Alain's experience in the music business is extensive, with 40 CD projects under his belt. He spent seven years in the States during the nineties working as a staff-producer for Virgin Records and collaborating with many musicians from bands such as Yes and Steely Dan. His work received 2 Grammy nominations and one Grammy Award on a production with ex Jefferson Airship guitarist Craig Chequico. Together they've taken a fresh look at mixing the art of DJing with live musicianship and have come up with an exciting new style. The result is a superbly refreshing sound that connects old school with future jazz. During a live Jazz Juice session guest artists can compliment many of the strong clear themes and crucially with the removal of many of the original solos are given the space and freedom for much improvisation. This leads to a spontaneous fully integrated and exciting sound that adds a brand new dimension to a conventional DJ set, literally bringing the material to life on stage and never ceases to keep the dance floor kicking. Featuring the hit singles 'Bugablue', 'Montuno Uno' and 'Sound Of The Summer ', 52nd Street is a fresh twist on the Blue Note sound laid down so many years ago: updating the style and vibe of the masters for a new generation of Jazz fans.'
