Review: For their latest release, Mexican reissue specialists Discodelic take us back to Alajuela, Costa Rica, in the mid 1970s, and the sweltering, cross-cultural fusion works of the Vargas brothers and their short-loved Combo Guarajeo. Our pick of an extremely strong pair is A-side 'Alamo', a sweet and jangling take on Latin funk blended with distinctive Guaguanco and psychedelic soul influences. It's humid, colourful and classy, and original copies of the record it first featured on are almost impossible to find. There's a more straightforward, central American take on Afro-Cuban music on side B, which we think - but have yet to confirm - has never previously been released. It, too, is a treat for the ears.

Review: Ximeno Records are among the cream of international rarities reissuers, moving at a steady pace to reproduce a large catalogue of old psych rock, funk, and disco oddities on 7" vinyl. Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. The trend continues on their latest here: ultra-obscure instrumental outfit Front Office debut their track 'Wow' on the A, plunging their breakbeats and guitars into walls of washy spin-noise. The B-side hears American greats Robert Holzer and Pure Love (William Kamarra) lay down mega-energetic love-kindling on the semi-eponymous track 'Pure Love'.

Review: MURO Select presents yet another crucial 7" for Fourth Wave Record Factory for anyone whose ears prick up when it comes to Far Eastern soul, city pop and jazz cause this one has two of Hamada Kingo's urban mellow gems. He was a key figure in 80s city pop and AOR and his iconic track 'Dream Is Alive' from the Earthian image album makes its vinyl debut and is full of The flip side features 'Yokaze,' another standout urban mellow tune that captures the smooth, soulful vibe of his work and is perfect for those close listen bar sessions or the gentle moments early in the evening.

Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: Bongo Joe has put together a fine second volume of its Maghreb K7 Club: Disco Singles series here with Hanini and Rachid Baba Ahmed both appearing. Hanini's first is 'Allaoui', a brilliantly ass-wiggling rhythm with organic flutes, shuffling percussion and catchy rhythms that are drenched in the warmest sun and alive with whistles. Then comes 'Mel'ha Marghbouna' which is a vocal vibe with hints of Chic's funky disco and expressive rhymes. On the flip is Rachid Baba Ahmed's 'House Rai Music' which is a raw and full of coarse hits and jumbled percussive beats.

Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Review: Standby for some read hot early 70s North Soul goodness on this vital Quentin Harris reissue. The 7" was first put out as a private press and its two tracks were recorded after Harris released his Statements album. This is the first ever vinyl reissue and is super limited to just 250 copies. 'Protect Me From Myself' rides a deep cut groove with silky bass and has big horn stabs next to some soul stirring vocal work. 'I'll Always Love You' on the flip then strips things further back to a heartbreaking soul sound with twirling stings and warm horns, lush backing vocals a sing along chords that will melt even the blackest of characters.

Review: First surfacing as a standalone digital release in October 2023, Mayer Hawthorne's 'The Pool' now returns as a split 7" via Lawson Entertainment. Here we join Mayer on a sultry, unbuttoned foray under the palms, in which we are charged to "get hot", for not even the Devil's hellfire could thaw our cool. An explosive r&b bounce tailor-made for human extremophiles - it's as if the song were composed unflinchingly in a heatwave - Mayer's lyrics are as steamy as a heat-hazed field of vision in such conditions, obscuring the visual field and urging the listener to surrender power to the other four senses. "Cool, in the water... Jump in and swim... And wash our sins away..."

Review: In the time that passed between their fine 2019 debut on Matsuana Records, 'Madchester Woman', and the release of their sophomore single, last year's 'Don't Sweat The Technique on Mocambo', Heroes of Limbo clearly recorded a lot of material - hence this relatively speedy sequel. Like the duo's previous material, the two tracks showcased here blur the boundaries between funk, highlife and Afrobeat. A-side 'Watch Out Now' is a languid, low-slung treat, with heavy Afrobeat horns, snaking solos, effects-laden Hammond organ and jazzy guitars reclining over a shuffling breakbeat and warming bassline. The pair gently raises the tempo and temperature on B-side cut 'Try Again', with more urgent horns and low-register sax solos weaving in and out of a more tropical-sounding rhythm track.

Review: Austin's Preservation Project strike gold once again on their highly-limited second outing. Giving up the a-side for an unknown girl troupe, "Love Can Be Red" has a touch of the northern soul sound with its big strings and emphatic harmonies and a big dancefloor dynamic. Review: Soul 4 Real are well into the hard efforts of reissing what could be considered among the best of the no less somewhat forgotten gems of the Motown era. Sifted straight from the label's very own master tape shelves, Soul 4 Real have privileged access to such a vault, and do their due diligent duty in representing each recording to the world once more. Here, Brenda Holloway, Carolyn Crawford, Gladys Knight & The Pips and Martha Reeves and The Vandellas are revealed as among the reams of famous faces to have, at one point, been given the thumbs down. Whether rightly or wrongly, Soul 4 Real commit themselves to a corrective justice here.

Review: We're used to Star Creature offering up authentically synth-heavy nu-boogie gems, but here they change tack with a little help from Chicago's Boogie Munster Crew. "Attack of The Chicago Boogie" sees them gather together some ridiculously rare private press gems originally recorded by Windy City musicians during the boogie and electrofunk era. They first offer up a fresh TJ & Hirsch re-edit of Andrew Kitchen's thrillingly squelchy and spacey "Attack of the Boogie", before TZ goes solo to rearrange J Parker Brown's deeper, warmer and more soulful lo-fi synth boogie treat "Live Lady". Review: Jules Buckley is a Grammy award-winning composer, curator and conductor who has linked up with long time collaborative partners Chris Wheeler, Heritage Orchestra and percussion collective Ghost-Note for this lively new full length. The record has been two years in the making and pays homage to the pillars of hip hop and mainstays of the breaking scene, but with plenty of added flair. There are plenty of dance floor ready breaks, as well as more airy and upbeat soul groovers like the excellent 'Space Funk.' Though the backbones of these tunes follow familiar genres rules, the flair on top is what makes them so special.

Review: Joni Haastrup's classic, cosmic disco LP is among the best of the best in terms of Afrobeat. What is particularly special about it is its 1978 release date - this was miles ahead of everyone else at that stage of African disco music - and the fact that it was the only piece of music to be released under the artist's real name. There is not much we can say about this absolute gem of an album, apart from the fact that it should not be missing from your own shelves, or DJ bag, for that matter. On the latter point, these six tunes are perfect for just about any situation requiring a dance. This is top Afrobeat beat music in all its glory. NOT to be missed. Warmly recommended...

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from UK funk stalwarts - and noted Mark Ronson collaborators - The Haggis Horns, so it would be fair to say that the ever-changing collective's fifth album is long overdue. The Leeds-based band apparently worked on it for two years, and you can tell: alongside their usual horn-heavy deep funk workouts and instrumental expressions of their influences (think the Meters, James Brown, Kool & The Gang and so on) you'll also find an ear-catching array of vocal numbers featuring the rasping, soulful voice of regular guest singer (and Hot Damn member) John McCallum. The result is an album oozing with good grooves, good times and even better horn arrangements.
