Scope LP Part 5
Cat: HORO 010.5. Rel: 08 Oct 13
Consequence, Loxy, Resound - "Project No Name"
Stray - "Wired"
Elsewhere - "0996"
Stickman - "Helix"
Review: Living up to its name in every way, Scope delves deeper into the furthest expanses of contemporary composition than any other compilation has dared to delve. Its fifth sampler, here we find the heavier, more beat-focused material of the album brought to the fore. From sharpened steppy, hip-snapping riddims such as "Helix" and and "0996" to more tension-based material where suspense is tightly weaved into thundering percussion and the carefully drawn out dynamics such as "Project No Name" and "Wired", each of these four cuts pushes the concept of bass music into entirely new realms. Excitingly deep.

Review: Fracture and Sam Binga are a collaborative match made in minimal heaven. Teaming up with Bristol mic man Rider makes this pact all the sweeter. Sleazy future dancehall vibes, the lean arrangements allow Rider's steamy dancefloor poetry to enjoy maximum effect as he explains his methods and techniques with the fairer sex with baritone abandon. Highlights include the tropical uplifts of "Bubble" and Logos cosmic twist on "She Want It Ruff". "FDGD" FTW.

Review: Studio Barnhus continue to surprise, with the first release of 2014 a label debut that shines the light on Stockholm's nascent footwork scene. Described as "the man behind the single best demo email Studio Barnhus ever received," Henry Rodrick's label debut consists of six-tracks that offer a neat document of the work the producer is doing as part of the Svensk Bas collective along with fellow Barnhus graduate Baba Stiltz and Marcus 'Basutbudet' Price. All the material here has been severely roadtested by Barnhus founders Boman, Kovacs and Nordkvist over the past twelve months and tracks such as "Rain & Tears" come filled with the self-effacing touches one comes to expect from a Studio Barnhus release. It's quite exciting to hear how a style of music that's been gestating in Chicago for several decades has been interpreted by a crew from the Gullmarsplan district of Stockholm.

Review: Footwork pioneer (and many would argue founder) RP Boo delivers his second Planet Mu album Fingers Bank Pads & Shoe Prints. Two years have passed since his Legacy album and here we find him at pin-point sharpness, re-shaking and reshaping the genre once again. Instant club fire hangs off most tracks like a supersized suit but it's the subtler, more reflective beatwork that really stands out such as falsetto-flickered Dilla-isms of "Your Choice", the operatic madness of "Sleepy and the cinematic sample dynamics of tracks like "Daddy's Home". Another foot-provoking document that will serve as a reference anchor deep into the future.

Review: A contemporary of Dance Mania artists DJ Deeon and DJ Slugo in the 90s, RP Boo is credited as a founding father of the footwork genre; his Ol' Dirty Bastard sampling track from 1997, "Baby Come On", is widely regarded as the track responsible for spawning the genre. Having released footwork albums from Young Smoke and Traxman in recent times, Planet Mu look to this godfather for their latest full length project. Even within the small footwork scene Legacy is a unique album; taking the sample wizardry to far out, often abstracted places, RP Boo nevertheless grounds his experimentalism with easily recognisable samples (Justin Timberlake, Queen), making his productions as raucous as they are idiosyncratic. Essential stuff.

Review: Chicago Footwork originator Ja Ru, whose musical history dates back to performances since she was as young as 10, hits home with her debut artist album. 12 tracks that strip back the essence of footwork to its bare bones and elements, we're treated to a true trip to all the senses. Highlights include the dusty jazzy waves and fluttering drum work of "Divine", the off-beat b-boy dizziness of "Break It", the jittering oddities and strange croaks of "No Fuks Given" and the fractured 23rd century funk of "Rapid Fire". Pure mix juice with sights set firmly on the future, Jana Rush has just set a whole new footwork benchmark.
