Berlin (4:09)
Dirty Boy (3:10)
Review: A Certain Ratio have returned with their most tight and funky album, possibly ever, recently, and it is steeped in 40 years of ACR DNA. Now you can grab two of the standout singles on this fine, limited edition white 7" thanks to Daniel Miller's essential Mute. Opener 'Berlin' is the second single from that album, ACR Loco, and has breezy vocals and Trillin riffs over tight drum work. 'Dirty Boy' is riddled with squelchy synth funk, with popping drums and a great vocal performance that will get any party vibing.

Review: Depending on where you stand, Virgil Abloh is either the ruiner of fashion, or its saviour. The Off-White founder doesn't exactly have a subtle style when it comes to his own brand, but that hasn't stopped him making it to the high profile position of artistic director at Louis Vuitton. He is also more and more involved with music on various levels and that now plays out with his new single with serpentwithfeet. It is presented here on both sides of this Sony 7" following his recent remix of Mercury Award winner Michael Kiwanuka's 'Solid Ground'.

Let Go (4:13)
Review: Japanese stars Akiko and Yukihiro Fukutomi came together to cover SADE's anthem several years ago but it now makes its way back to fresh wax courtesy of Record Store Day 2024. They infused it with dark, mysterious jazz and contemporary influences and Akiko's enigmatic vocals intertwine flawlessly with the minimalist arrangement. On the B-side, their original 'let GO' offers a spiritual journey through dub-techno realms where the synergy between Akiko's emotive delivery and Fukutomi's masterful production creates a captivating sound. This release epitomises the pair's creative chemistry and innovative approach to blending diverse musical elements into a seamless, immersive new realm.

I Will Survive (4:40)
RNC 2020 (3:13)
Review: RECOMMENDED
The most surprising thing about this staggering 7" is the fact the artist formerly known as Anthony Hegarty hasn't released 'I Will Survive' before. Gloria Gaynor's testament to the strength of the human spirit, and particularly the resilience people call upon when facing a broken heart, has long been an anthem of global queer and counterculture. Anonhi, either as lead singer of rightly lauded Anthony & The Johnsons, or as latter day soloist, is an icon of those same scenes, laying claim to being the only transgender person ever nominated for an Academy Award ('Manta Ray', from the movie Racing Extinction).

The results are everything we could have hoped for, rethinking the disco anthem as an acoustic number equal parts teary-eyed pride and sorrow, Anonhi's famous baritone crying out over strings and guitars. Backed with the frenzied distorted riffs and rage of 'RNC 2020', it's a formidable release.

Review: Mysterious Swiss sound sorcerer Anom sits comfortably between the likes of Amon Tobin, Flying Lotus and The Orb: Abstract, experimental but laden with oodles of creative and dark sonic imagery. From the rusty shuffle and steel-yard slamming percussion of "Track 1" through to the drowsy steam-punk soliloquy of "Track 4" he's conjured a unique niche in electronica that's hard to define but addictive to spin.

Benoit B - "100%" (4:12)
Candido - "Shaktiman" (4:07)
Review: The latest missive from Benoit B's Banlieue label is a tight double-header in which the boss man takes top billing. His A-side cut "100%" is a sleazy, mind-bending chugger where bleeping electronics, breathy vocal snippets, ghostly lead lines and "clonk"-style percussion hits rise above a sludgy bassline, new beat drums and a filthy bassline. Candido (not the disco-era percussionist, but rather a rising star of German electronic music) handles the B-side, offering up an even darker and sleazier number that joins the dots between EBM and new beat (think stabbing, mutilated vocal samples, machine-gun percussion fills and "Sensoria"-era Cabaret Voltaire bass).

Minority Justice (5:09)
Review: This heavily limited 7" is released roughly in line with the celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday. The tunes are taken from Joaquin Joe Claussell's much loved Raw Cassette series, and
'Break Free' in particular was produced with the intent of "challenging people (everyone) to wake up and at the very least-give some thought to breaking themselves free from the chains of the mental incarceration, all the while ridding ourselves from the illusion that we reside freely on what many of us ultimately see as a slave plantation." Musically it is dark, intense, involving stuff that layers off-beat jazz keys with a driving deep house beat.

BrightonTapes 02 (3:22)
Review: Before he signed with Tru Thoughts 21 years ago, and many years before he became one of Ninja Tune's most popular artists, Simon Green AKA Bonobo was merely a bedroom DJ/producer knocking up tracks in his Brighton home. The two tracks showcased on this limited-edition "45" date from that period and have never before seen the light of day. A-side 'Brighton Tapes 01' is warming and hazy, with toasty chords, drowsy flute and female vocal samples and deep bass rising above crunchy, loose-limbed MPC-driven drums. Flipside 'Brighton Tapes 02', which contains the same high level of vintage cassette hiss, is similarly warming, with a sweet female vocal sample, snaking sax samples and rich Rhodes chords wrapping around a head-nodding hip-hop beat.

Think About It (Richard Devine remix) (5:36)
Review: The Bossfyte duo come through with their debut EP on Detroit Underground, and it's on 7" format for all the boogie collectors to reminisce over. The pair had thus far released only a couple of mixes and we hadn't really heard their studio skills until now, a subaquatic blend of sounds for the more skilful DJ. "Lil Dog Toes" is a fine Michigan special, a tune that finds its form amid blurry electro shots and twists itself into a slow-paced techno bruiser, complete with morphed and detuned vocal samples.

Sulu Sekou (7" version)
Coney Storm Drain (extended version)
Review: Ahead of the drop of his debut album, Houndstooth are sneaking out this little 7" shaped taster to give expectant Call Super fans an idea of what they're in for come the big release date. "Sulu Sekou" is a finely woven electronica tale enriched with haunting instrumentation that piles romance and mystery into the endearing pops and fidgets of the homespun rhythm. It's a decidedly mellow excursion compared to the previous Call Super singles, lifting the lid on the exciting new avenues down which the artist is headed. "Coney Storm Drain" appears here in an extended version that finds a base layer of micro-static and winsome melody interfered with by scattered rasps of percussion, building in intensity without ever feeling too anchored to any one direction, like any good exercise in experimentalism.

Review: Although he built his reputation as party-starting DJ, Mister Saturday Night co-founder Justin Carter has always been a singer-songwriter at heart. This debut solo release sees him delivering evocative, folksy vocals over plucked acoustic guitar lines and ghostly backing vocals. The song's fragile, slightly woozy nature comes to the fore on the flipside "Version" mix, which only emphasizes the weary beauty of Carter's lyrics and vocal performance. It's a bit of a sideways step for Mister Saturday Night, but then the label has never played by the rules.

The London pair once agin fuse breakbeats, synths and ambient with weird and wonderful samples to make for fascinating sounds that have drawn parallels with everyone from DJ Shadow to Death in Vegas. Review: She's the Diva of the Diode, five-time Grammy Awards-nominee for Best New Age Album, and one of America's all-time top synthesising pioneers. If that doesn't tell you almost everything there is to know about Xenon then we're really not sure what will. Ciano is a sound designer, composer, and label executive whose 1970s output was her most commercially successful, but has never backed off from the release schedule, or lost her innovative abilities.

This addition to any Ciani fan's collection is very much everything she's about. Comprising just three tracks, or rather two short tunes and an interlude of just 45-seconds, the best way to describe this is an experiment in descending notes and noises, formed into patterns which slowly present forms of sonic structure. Whether that's warbles or wobbles, bleeps or vocal samples.

Review: The life and times of Delia Derbyshire continue to be a fascination for anyone with even a passing interest in electronic music. And rightly so, for she was at the vanguard of music technology working in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Silva Screen are committed to presenting her pioneering works with the due reverence and ceremony they deserve, and so it goes for the two pieces of incidental music she composed in the 1960s, pressed onto this beautifully packaged gatefold 7". A-side piece 'The Delian Mode' has become something of a byword for Derbyshire's work, and listening to this record, there's nothing else in musical history quite like it.

Review: Trunk is back with a vengeance and his usual brand of musical oddities! If you don't know the label, it has been one of the most important outlets of lost reels and rare music of all shapes and sizes. Primarily, however, Johnny Trunk has reissued a lot of soundtracks from rare films and even a whole load of rare recording from all over the world. This time, he drops a collaboration between BBC Radiophonic's Delia Derbyshire and Anthony Newley, the former of whom has just seen a reissue through the wonderful Mississippi imprint out of Portland, Oregon. "Moogies Bloogies", as you'd expect, is a sweet and ethereal mixture of chirpy lyrics, quirky melodies odd tape loops. It's one of those things that you'll just have to listen to. Review: By now Future Nuggets have surely been established as one of Romania's leading exponents of leftfield electronic oddities, and they don't disappoint on the surprising delights of this new 7" from Renato Din Sala and Ion Din Dorobanai. There's an Eastern lilt to the vocals and melodies on both tracks, but they're framed by some wonderfully quirky synth parts and budget drum machines. "Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit)" in particular capitalises on cranky monosynth squelch and organ wails, while "I Love You Viata Mea (Lema)" takes a more energetic approach and works some Rhodes-like sounds into the mix.

Review: DJ F16 Falcon's music has always been tricky to pigeonhole, with the fast-rising French producer frequently fusing dub-wise rhythms and off-kilter beats with unusual samples, Tolouse Low Tracks style experimental electronics and melodic elements that doff a cap to tropical, new age and world music. Ici Commence La Nuit, his latest excursion, treads a similar sonic path, delivering unusual but wonderfully inventive and entertaining excursions. The most accessible and warming of the lot is colourful, melodious and bass-heavy opener 'Ici Commence La Nuit', though the sludgy, modular-rich pulse of 'Trip a La Mode de Quand' and thoroughly odd 'Clope Sucree' are equally as potent.

Based on a novel by science fiction writer Edmond de Bombackir which was in turn inspired by the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, Operator#17 opens with a track of dreamy, ambient soundscape. The sound design here really is stunning, with little nuances and motifs that only truly reveal themselves after repeat listens. The flip side explores even more esoteric pastures, with nods to glitch and musique concrete. This record comes wrapped in a fascinating "listing paper" sleeve too. Recommended.

The young, mysterious outfit have put together a wonderfully crestfallen pool of instruments and electronic distortion in "Sunday Breakfast", a totally surreal piece of music that could easily be enjoyed by any record aficionado. The same goes for the more glacial tones of "New Year", and the playful peaks and troths on "Poka", because what Gluvs do best is transform a genre that is largely appreciated by music nerds into something more concrete, less demanding on the ears and utterly sublime to zone out to. These experimental sounds pair wispy fragments of melody, the hiss of static electricity, twisted drones and only just audible details that add a range of moods from psychedelic introspection to cosmic wonder. Review: As part of Downwards' DO series, this 7" continues the theme of industrial, synth-wave strangeness that came to bear such a heavy influence on label boss Regis. Collin Gorman Weiland sounds as though he's been plucked from the seediest nether region of post-punk as the grainy guitar tones of "Curse" call out languidly underneath a thick blanket of distortion. This leaves plenty of room for Antonym's considerably breezier forays into synth-funk to cruise around. There's still an underlying tension in the carefully arranged arpeggios, but compared to the bleak drones of Weiland's own turn, it's thoroughly accessible. Highly recommended.

Arabesque (5:06)
Review: "And it was at this point that the experts began to admit that they'd made a mistake. That five two eight was not the frequency of love, was not the heavenly frequency, but was the frequency of death, was the frequency of the sun moving towards the abyss. That we'd all been listening to things in reverse, as in a mirror, and that the third summer of love was the summer of blood. And it was at that point, when the end was in sight, that I decided to turn off the radio." Hiele Kinsella delivers two tracks of unapologetically avant-garde stuff, opening with the spoken word, electronica, unnerving poetics and deeply atmospheric drones of its title number. Whirs, refrains, and unsettling string spirals surround the listener, abstract words packed with symbolism boring a hole directly to the centre of your soul. Flip it to find the unarguably nice and jarringly inviting, hushed piano solo of 'Arabesque'. Weird and wonderful stuff.

The more attentive followers of Young Turks will know the music here originates from a commission by artists Sofi Mattioli and Rebecca Salvadori who enlisted the four to provide short compositions for their film Continuum. Review: Since debuting in 2007, the sound of Scandinavian twosome Jesse has evolved considerably, moving from electro and skewed synth-pop to dusty Balearic beats, spaced-out deep dub disco, techno and, more recently, new age ambient. This seven-inch single, which marks their return to wax after two long years, sees them take further steps away from their roots. A-side 'Possibilities' is drowsy, atmospheric and effects-laden, with the pair layering sustained minor-key chords and bubbly, marimba style melodies over slipped, loose-limbed machine drums and intergalactic electronic noises. It's rather good all told, as is more experimental and unusual flipside 'Shazzy', which brilliantly joins the dots between icy IDM, trippy ambient and Radiophonic Workshop style modular experimentation.

Review: The seventh in this series of 7" singles is by Bristol and Avon's Kinlaw and Franco Franco and it is a rare mix of sounds with R&B, Italian rap and twisted basslines all defining the tracks. 'Crocs On The Plough' is industrial and experimental in its production - earth-shattering bass, police sirens, and soot-black synths, but background chords bring light as the vocals are delivered with guttural rawness. On the flip, the OSVMVSM version slows things right down to a crawl and the distorted synths and crunchy textures take on even more otherworld character.

Review: Anton Klint first came to our attention thanks to a handful of EP's that he dropped on Munich's Public Possession label, but while we were already big fans of the imprint's work, it was Klint's singular take on house and disco that attracted us. This latest two-tracker comes via Sweden's IDEAL label, and the producer offers something a little darker and more experimental compared to his previous escapades. "Personalmote" is a fuzzy, broken tune that verges on house but never quite fully rids itself of a tribal, stepping kind of vibe. On the other hand, "Efter Stangning" churns and drives away at a more classic deep house level, but Klint nevertheless injects a noticeable layer of something altogether more exotic. Twisted, dystopian house beats would be the best way to some this up.

His familiar Jamaican drawl naturally comes to the fore, ricocheting above a head-nodding future dub rhythm that should appeal to fans of both dubstep and dub techno as well as full-on dub-heads. Almost as impressive is the slightly more experimental and trippy B-side, "Homesick", where echoing orchestral sweeps and distant trumpet solos bob in and out of a sea of pitched-down dub techno textures. Don't miss out on this one - it really is rather good.

It is a rather groundbreaking electronic gem originally released in 1974 and soon revolutionised music with its hypnotic synth melodies, driving rhythms and pioneering use of vocoders. The track - celebrating its 50th anniversary and here on 7" - alongside an album picture disc and new Dolby Atmos mix on CD, which seal the birthday celebrations - captured the essence of modern travel by blending motorik beats with atmospheric soundscapes to create a real electronic journey and sense of movement. Last of all comes 'I Need Love' featuring 'Seamonator & Darthereider in unrelenting fashion

Grey Skies (i) (5:11)
Review: Lo Kindre's work in and around the Scottish scene has been exemplary thus far, and he returns to the Phase Group label he runs with Mr TC for a full-length EP that continues his trend of omnivorous electronics without too much regard for generic boundaries. "Dusk" is an expansive slab of melancholy electronica with nods to minimal wave and proto-trance, which isn't especially in line with his earlier works. "Grey Skies (i)" features similar synth voices, but comes on more like an ominous Giallo soundtrack off-cut in dub, which is a wonderful thing of course.

Mondpfad (4:11)
Review: Emerging hero of the Russian techno underground Pavel Milyakov aka Buttechno appears here for new Kiev based imprint Muscut. A diversion from his usual dusty, lo-fi techno experiments, here Milyakov presents some surreal dark ambient excursions ike on the dreamy opener "Mondjazz" and the jagged and disjointed arpeggiation of "Audiopfad" which is supported by textured and noisy field recordings for added measure. On the B side, "Mondjungi" rinses snares through tape delay so that they disperse frantically across the audio spectrum, while some woozy and sinister pads keep you calm amidst all the madness. Finally the title track creeps you out nicely with its gradually evolving pad chord swimming amidst haunted layers of odd tonality.

Review: If you've not heard of Oregano, don't worry - it's a brand-new studio band comprised of multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee, Paul Elliott (JetTricks, Eleven76), RPS Surfers' Shay Landa and Markey Funk. This is their debut single and the fact that it's coming out on the psychedelia-inspired Delights label should give you a clue as to what it sounds like. Rooted in library music and psychedelic soundtrack jazz, with additional nods towards krautrock and Berlin School ambient, both instrumental compositions are richly musically detailed, wonderfully atmospheric and sound like they should be sound-tracking vivid, off-kilter and hallucinatory experimental films from the mid 1970s.

Fair Trade Dark (4:29)
Colddrinksnreverse (2:40)
Review: There's not much info on the ground regarding this new Paid Reach label, but the involvement of one Gunnar Wendel will mean there are plenty out there wanting to check it out. First surfacing towards the end of Lowtec's great RA 439 podcast for Resident Advisor last year, Paid Reach is described as a "collaboration" with Wendel's Ominira label and features two tracks "edited and produced" by Wendel. Both "Fair Trade Dark" and "Colddrinksnreverse" exist at the more abstract end of the electronic music scale, with the former little more than playfully toying with a modulated loop. "Colddrinksnreverse" meanwhile is around three minutes of phased and phucked vocal samples. Excellent mixtape material basically.

Review: Misha Panfilov is an Estonaian producer who is also part of the Estrada Orchestra but strikes out on his own this time for the Kallaste Elektrooniline Muusika EP. These four curious and eerie cosmic journeys are quite gorgeous in their own right. "Pohjast Pinnani" will transport you back to the 70's in psychedelic fashion with its rich tapestries of vintage synth solos and modular bliss. We particularly enjoyed also the trippy farfisa melodies on the epic journey that is "Rattasoit" and the epic closer "Oueuni (Paar Tundi Enne Koitu)" this one's for the real space cowboys!

Lurch (version - Peder Mannerfelt remix) (4:23)
Review: Stefan Betke: mastering maestro and dub techno legend. He's back on his own imprint with "Lurch" another excision through awe inspiring bass driven electronics woven through dense soundscapes and impeccable sound design, as always. There's a remix on the flip by man on the moment Peder Mannerfelt, of all people. Interesting choice? We thought so too, but we can certainly vouch for it! His version is equally mysterious and rich in its sound, keeping on with the dub techno aesthetic in its own way and working rather effectively.

We Are So Glad
Review: Sacred Summits is an absolute beauty of a label. Specialising in unearthing odd and wonderful experimental music form all corners of the globe, they've had a tremendous couple of years in the game. The Luis Perez LP last year had to be one of our top picks and this latest scorcher from post-punk legend Colin Potter is equally as awesome. "I Couldn't Agree" is a classic, synth-led jumble of apocalyptic lyrics and raw beats, but the real jewel is on the flip in the form of "We Are So Glad", one of those tunes that you can leave on repeat. Cut-throat percussion, doomed guitar riffs and Potter's familiar prophecies riding all over it. Watch out for the upcoming LP dropping later this year!

Rex Ilusivii & Goran Vejvoda & Milan Mladenovic - "Track 1" (3:40)
CHBB - "NBKE" (4:45)
Review: Versatile's new Uprooted project, masterminded by serial curator and long-time label contributor Vidal Benjamin, has an intriguing concept. It focuses on the 'duality' of musicians who grow up in one place, then move to another and absorb that culture. The two tracks on release number one were picked by Vladimir Ikovic, who has selected a track a piece from Belgrade, the city of his birth, and Dusseldorf, his current home. On the Serbian side, he offers up 'Track 1' by Rex Ilusivii, Goran Vejvoda and Milan Mladenovic, a trippy, slow-motion slab of dubbed-out, Eno-influenced slab of post-punk experimentalism from 1984. Flip for some rough, powerful, mind-mangling proto-techno from 1981: the stylish, lo-fi and pleasingly intense 'NBKE' by CHBB. Inspired obscurities that are well worth a listen.

Feel Bad Smile (4:46)
Review: Vocalist and poet Roger Robinson has connected with Jabu producer Amos for this new single which finds them explore new grounds. After their fuzzy lovers rock outing last time out, here they head off into space with more cosmic and zoned out sounds full of intimate and slo mo grooves. 'Summer' goes first and is a blissed out cut with ambient pads and lonely piano keys encouraging you to get lost in deep thought. 'Feel Bad Smile' is even more of a cosy late night cuddle, with spoken word mutterings and lingering notes breaking your heart each and every time.
