Review: Two bros fresh from LA giving hip-hop acts a royal dubstep seeing too. Could life BE any better for 3 Stripes? We sincerely doubt it. Here we find them getting lively over a number of tried and test heaters. Wale's guitar-strumming "Bait" gets the most savage bass beasting with its stadium-splintering half-step naughtiness. B.O.B's "Bet I" comes a close second with the epic saw-tooth giving B.O.B's fast-swagger rhymes a little extra room to breath. With Saafir and Goodie Mob treats elsewhere on the release, this is the most comprehensive 3 Stripes release to date. Heavy.

Review: Foundation Audio sister joint Crud Recordings catapults its murky wonders into our collection for the first time with this heavyweight couplet from Chad Dubs and two of the best MCs in the bass game. Riko Dan jumps on the gritty, industrial strength 'Off The Chain' for some aggy, commanding funk. Magugu joins on the B with 'Against The Grain', wrapping his signature Black Rambo baritone over a similarly brutalist rhythm. Crud by name, cred by nature.

Review: Their third album, Brand New Machine sees Chase & Status reach a nirvana-like vein of form. Every single track is impeccable and these are four of the finest examples. "International" pays respect to hip-hop's golden age (notably Nas) and tips a massive nod at formative jungle by way of a Cutty Ranks vocal. "Machine Gun" rifles us back to the modern day with a US-slanted grime piece that stutters and spits with genuine venom. "Gangsta Boogie VIP", meanwhile, sees C&S at their deadliest. Opening with a slick hip-hop lick we're soon thrown deep into the D&B mosh pit with no sign of exit. "Breathing" completes this stunning double pack on a liquid note. Skippy, swift and soulful, it reminds us where the unstoppable duo have come from.

Review: Ramp unleashes some more computer funk, this time courtesy of Computer Jay's "Maintain." Returning to the label following the huge success of his "Distance 10" that was picked up by the likes of Kode9 and Fly Lo, Jay delivers anther slice of computerised, synth-heavy freak out beats.
Complete with reworks from FaltyDL, Mike Slott and Ikonika, Ramp have certainly loaded this one up with fresh and contemporary, techy sounds. The self confessed computer obsessive from LA is part of a collective that includes Flying Lotus, Ras G and Gaslamp Killer. Their influence can be heard through his music but Jay unquestionably has his own inimitable sound. Ascending analog flashes scatter over minimal beats on "Maintain." Chopped up vocals pepper the track as it spirals around techy sounds and effects in a dizzying take on electronic funk. With a tempo that is completely bespoke for what Jay is doing, "Maintain" still manages to ooze charm and lay out a decent groove besides its highly unnatural approach. Ramp starlet FaltyDL turns in the first remix, again playing tricks on the mind with his use of tempo. His hyper-garage mix is an edgy and sometimes uncomfortable rework of the original. It manages to push the vocal and melody to the brink whilst keeping the groove in place.
Mike Slott then steps up with a more laid back, euphoric remix. Toning down the tech madness slightly, he opts for a more hip-hop infused offering. Ikonika slows things down further still to close the release. Adding a sensation of strangeness to Computer Jay’s track, she turns it into a wonky piece of tech-step that seems to revel in the space allowed to it that the original did not. Another wonderfully unique release from Ramp and Computer Jay, "Maintain" signals just how much one man can get out of a computer for a three and a half minute track.
