Review: The classic 'Two Sevens Clash', which Joe Gibbs produced so well, is a timeless reggae outing that gets a welcome reissue here. Anyone of a certain age might remember this as a soundtrack to the years when punk was appropriating reggae sounds. The tune is from an album that was listened to between punk gigs and when not getting beaten up by Teds. The band of course didn't know this would become its fate and in isolation it remains a special listen with some smart mixing desk effects, hissing hi hats and nice dusty and deep low ends.
Review: Dutch label Fontoyard is back and doing what it does best early in this new year, and that is serving up fresh rhythms from some of reggae's best talents. This one is the sound of T Gibbs in collaboration with Empress Ahavah who is responsible for writing the original tune. It is a superb stepping riddim that is perfectly driven by a heavy bassline. Up top, like all the most crucial dub, is a mystical melody that captivates the imagination, and some silky smooth vocals. Flip it over and T Gibbs offers up a nice and tasteful dub that dials things back to the inviting low end.

Review: The cult figure that is Peter Hunnigale and South London reggae sound system mainstay Tippa Irie have teamed up to deliver a fresh rendition of Pablo Gad's classic riddim 'Hard Times.' This new version is just the fifth release from the Tok 2 label and it arrives on a 7" that showcases both artists' distinctive styles with Hunnigale's soulful vocals and Irie's dynamic DJing making it a real winning sound. The B-side features a dub mix by renowned producer Nick Manasseh, and he adds real dub depth to the track.

Review: Five essential Yabby You roots classics from the mid-70s are being released via Prophets and Digikiller and they all come paired with King Tubby's visionary dubs. This one focuses on 'Fire In Kingston' from Vivian Jackson and The Prophets and it's the pinnacle of roots music blending spiritual depth with Tubby's groundbreaking production. The low end is warm and cavernous and the vocals are effortlessly stylish and soulful and with the addition of sprinkling percussion and a zoned-out dub and you have a lovely little 7".
Review: Having a cut a record as early as 16 years old, Junior's talents were identified quickly and he went on to be a prolific roots rockers vocalist with a busy career through the 70s and 80s. One of those who heard and recorded him then was Lee "Scratch" Perry and this record was one of their collaborative standouts, pairing a driving rhythm with a powerful, catchy lead vocal and uplifting background harmonies all elevated by the unmistakable warmth of the Black Ark studio's production. Review: Japan meets Jamaica in Tokyo Riddim Band's latest single where illustrious keyboardist Izumi 'Mimi' Kobayashi joins forces with Jamaican singer Ras Tavaris. This track revives Kobayashi's 1981 hit, 'Lazy Love,' originally from her sought-after Coconuts High LP recorded in LA. Featured on Time Capsule's 2024 Japanese reggae compilation Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985, the song now transforms from soulful pop to a deep dub cut. The single was originally a track from their popular 1993 album, and here it is served up on 7" next to a rare B-side dub mix that fleshes things out, adds plenty of reverb, and generally makes for more horizontal and heady listening.

This collaboration, influenced by US Soul and classic Jamaican Reggae, brings the Studio One vibe of the 1960s to life. Following their debut album Cut A Wire Showcase (2023), they now deliver this upbeat, flying-cymbal track that's sure to set any dancefloor on fire. On Side-2, a minimalist riddim "Version," perfect for DJs craving that authentic vibe. After nearly two decades as a reggae drummer, aDUBta has fully embraced the sounds of 60s to early 80s reggae, gaining international recognition with Sounds From The Attic. Marcus I's soulful vocals and sharp songwriting shine throughout, recorded at aDUBta's Attic Roots Studio. The single, mixed analogue on a Tascam 388, is primed for sound systems worldwide, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this dynamic reggae team.
Review: The Top Ranking crew has pulled another doozy out of the bag here. Freddie McKay's 'Mope & Cry' finds the vocalist at his most vulnerable and expressive. It was originally released in 1974 during the golden era of Jamaican music and is steeped in rich harmonies with a rolling bassline with gently skanking guitar that cushions McKay's aching vocals. With a voice that effortlessly conveys sorrow and resilience, he delivers a timeless tale of love lost and emotional survival. The killer dub on the flip makes this one a no-brainer.
Review: Sunset's reissue series of Harry J releases continues with this gem from the late, great Freddie McKay's 1986 collaboration with The Jah Apostles, one of the last productions to feature the singer - who seamlessly navigated from the early ska days right up to the digital era - before his untimely death in November of the same year. McKay's soulful vocals ride effortlessly over the Apostles' mesmerising rhythms here, meaning that it is impossible not to be transported listeners to the golden shores of Jamaica at sundown. As is so often with the case with reggae, there's a dubbed out version on the flip - we wouldn't have it any other way.
Review: Sound Of Thunder outta France lands at release number ten here with another gorgeous slice of lovers rock on 45rpm. It features contemporary producers and vocalists Loic Paulin & The SOA offering up A-side single 'Jason White'. At less than three minutes it is the definition of short but sweet but in that time it manages to make its mark with the yearning vocals really hitting home next to nice heat-damaged organ chords and a classic reggae rhythm. On the flip, Mellowmood spins out the sounds via plenty of mixing desk tweaks on his version 'Poor Jason Dub'.
Review: Lee Perry & The Upsetters are responsible for no end of legendary dub sounds. The master producer, Black Ark studio owner and his trusty backing band rarely ever missed when they laid down sound and that is certainly true of 'Kiss Me Neck,' a popular jam from 1975 that now gets reissued. It's a cracking bit of 70s roots with heavy funk overtones and horns recorded at Black Ark. As is always the way, this one comes back with a killer dub and arrives in a thick Lee Perry & The Upsetter sleeve.
Review: French label Irie Ites has been busy of late and has put together a great bunch of new versions of classic reggae rhythms and pressed them all up to 45 rpm. This one takes the form of a brand new roots vocal cut over the classic 'Murderer/Hot Milk' rhythm with an instrumental version on the flip from the legendary backing band The Roots Radics. Their take is a more heady and carefully reduced one that allows the rich drums and bass to roll endlessly and hypnotise as they go.
Review: Hope & Faith Records returns with fresh releases featuring the "Standing Tall Riddim," a new production in the early 70s roots reggae style. There are three in all and this one is from the female harmony trio from the renowned Basque reggae band Tacumah. They perfectly pay homage to the roots reggae era while adding new school touches with both tracks rolling deep and authentically with soulful vocal stylings up top that ledge deep into your heart.
Review: Judah Tafari's new 7" Great Escape / Bezos vs. Musk delivers a potent dose of classic roots reggae with deeply spiritual Rastafari themes. Though not widely known, Judah Eskender Tafari has garnered a dedicated following through his work since the late '70s. His music continues to resonate in roots reggae sound systems and DJ sets, maintaining relevance nearly fifty years later. On Great Escape, produced by Victor Axelrod for Daptone, Tafari reflects on humanity's quest for salvation, drawing on Old Testament imagery. The track's lush, authentic roots production allows Tafari's earnest vocals to shine, reminding listeners of the powerful spiritual messages that have always defined his work. On Side-2, 'Bezos vs. Musk,' adds a contemporary twist, showcasing Tafari's ability to remain both relevant an rooted in his spiritual mission.
Review: Wackie is back with what they call a 'modern gem from the Wackie's vaults' and it comes from one of their most revered 12 Tribes-related artists, the late great Judah Eskender Tafari. He offers up a 'Rocky Road' which is a super hard and digital stepper that comes with uplifting synth work and plenty of authentic Bronx vibes. After that pearler comes a flips side version that strips things out and is a more ghostly version from Bullwackie for headier moments. Both sides of this one offer plenty of dub delights on a well-pressed 45rpm.
Review: Described by SOTU as a slice of "obscure 70s one away roots", this rare 7" reissue of Glendon Taylor's 'Vanity/Social Version' is an impressive musing on vaingloriousness and vice from a nearly unknown artist. It's nearly impossible to find any good info on who Glendon Taylor was, nor is it easy to apprehend the history of his original label Assagai Recording co., so we'll have to go by our ears here: 'Vanity' is a parping, glissando-laden lollop through ratchety, janky roots reggae, with Taylor lamenting the hollow promises of one Mr. Brown, who says he will help the singer but does not. The weightier 'Social Version' functions as the instrumental, and is impressive in its use of echoed fills.
Review: This is a superb reissue of a real bit of top-quality roots and voters rock on 7". It finds singer Ruddy Thomas bringing his own fresh vocal update to Errol Dunkley's Keep The Pressure Down and the results are sublime - there is yearning in his vocal and smooth, warming soul next to libidinous horns that add to the vibes. On the flip is a nice tough dubwise flip which people say might well have been mixed by Ruddy himself because he was known to also work as an engineer alongside Errol Thompson at Gibb's Retirement Crescent.
