Review: From the label that sent sparks flying last year, the third eagerly awaited release from Lifted Music is here to impressively kick start 2008.
'From The Inside Out' sees the collaboration of superior artists Spor, Apex, Ewun, Evol Intent, and Phace. This double 12" is proof there's
no holding back this year. With strong DJ support across the board, even Andy C hasn't missed this one - each and every set for months.
A must have for any realist d&b head.

Shadow Play
Miller
Review: Shy FX's Digital Soundboy label continues to keep us on our toes; following on from a slew of funky bass music offerings plus Breakage's recent trance-infused smash hit "Fighting Fire", things take a different turn with this latest release from Blocks & Escher. The pair hark back to an earlier era of D&B with stripped back breaks, liquid funk elements and rolling, jungle business in "Shadow Play". Atmospherics whisper and curl around pattering bongo-esque drums, shimmying SFX and billowing bass. In stark contrast, "Miller" is a more tech-ed up incarnation on a sort of Break meets Alix Perez type vibe, with a tense, hissing intro, thumping drop and taught, clipped breaks with a moody rumbling b-line propelling it along.

Luv Me
Luv Me (12")

Blue Sonix - "Luv Me" (feat Michael Moulton - Logistics remix)
Electrosoul System - "Moving The Transit"
Review: Originally released in 2004 on Rubik Records, Blue Sonix's "Luv Me" was one of the most underrated tracks of that year and still remains label boss BCee's favourite cut from Rubik. Who better to give this the re-lick than man of the moment Logistics. The combination of Blue Sonix's original depth and warmth combined with Logistics signature dancefloor energy has created something special and has already been getting played by the likes of Redeyes, AI, London Elektricity and of course Logistics himself. On the flipside is the Spearhead debut for Electrosoul System, who has been going from strength to strength. It's all about the classic organ bassline in this one, again getting the perfect mix of soul grabbing depth and dancefloor energy.

Bou & Mefjus - "Wormhole" (3:47)
Bou & TI - "Road Runner" (3:46)
Review: Continuing to lead from the front after years at the top of its game, the next Critical release is a four track collaborative project which features Mefjus, Enei, Upgrade, Chimpo and TI. It's a seriously heavyweight dance floor ready record primed for maximum destruction. Bou & Upgrade kick things off with 'Creeper' a dark and devastating stepper with menacing vocals from Chimpo. Bou then links with Enei for a taught and bouncy cut with steely drums before Mefjus joins in for the drilling, frazzled synth work of 'Wormhole.' Last of all is the 'Road Runner', another red hot riddim with expertly designed bass.

Break - "Solvent" (5:24)
Exposure - "Regrets" (feat Mark Douglas) (4:55)
Review: Destination Bristol: D&B motherland and home to more junglists-per-capita than any other city on the planet including relative newcomers A R. Headed by Exposure the forward-thinking label strike more barbed soul gold on their third release. Break takes the lead with a white knuckle spacefunk of "Solvent". Almost taking a classic early 2000s neuro tone, it's Break in a playful space race type of mood. Flip for some silky vocal soul from Exposure as the dulcet feels of Mark Douglas wrap neatly over dreamy pianos and pads. No regrets.

Aim'd At You
Echo Box VIP
Review: This is the last part of the 'Undiluted' LP, and is arguably the most eagerly anticipated 12" off the LP. "Aim'd At You" is the most recent dance-floor smash to come out of the Brockie & Ed Solo studio, it has being abused by countless DJs over the past year and is as big a tune as he has ever done. Backed up by the VIP mix of "Echo Box" the anthem originally out via True Playaz. So the 'Pure' LP hits completion, just in time for the hammer blow next month which is the release of the absolutely massive "System Check" remix.

Stickman - "Helix"
Review: Living up to its name in every way, Scope delves deeper into the furthest expanses of contemporary composition than any other compilation has dared to delve. Its fifth sampler, here we find the heavier, more beat-focused material of the album brought to the fore. From sharpened steppy, hip-snapping riddims such as "Helix" and and "0996" to more tension-based material where suspense is tightly weaved into thundering percussion and the carefully drawn out dynamics such as "Project No Name" and "Wired", each of these four cuts pushes the concept of bass music into entirely new realms. Excitingly deep.

Counterstrike & Eye-D - "The Grind"
Catabomb - "Gutwrench"
Limewax - "Last Call"
Eye-D & Hidden - "Joshua's War"
Review: PRSPCT Recordings proudly presents the "Future Filth EP". This is a very strong double pack loaded with the rawest drum & bass around. The EP kicks off with a monstrous collaboration between Counterstrike and Eye-D entitled "The Grind". A monster filled with filth that makes you want to grind your teeth on the streets. On the flip Catacomb unleashes "Gut Wrench" - a nasty futuristic crawler with an actual gut-wrenching bassline powered by running hard-edged catabeats. "Last Call" is Limewax at his best. Amazing edits, creepy basslines, mental subs and complete darkness. Finishing off the EP is "Joshua's War". This is pure filthy Dutch tech created in the Goes-Noord studios by PRSPCT family members Eye-D and Hidden. Support comes from Audio, Evol Intent, Tech Itch, Dylan, John B, Black Sun Empire and more.

Review: Here's a wonderful nugget very few of us knew about; dreamy 90s alternative singer / songwriter Julee Cruise (who was most famous for 'Falling' on Twin Peaks) was paired up with bonafide house pioneer Eric Kupper when they were both signed to Warner in the mid 90s... So they wrote two drum & bass tracks! Clearly inspired by the jazzier side of the genre (think Talkin' Loud, Full Cycle, Two Pages-era 4 Hero), both cuts breeze along with pace, soul and melody. Think Hybrid with a little Breakbeat Era and EZ Rollers. Think what a mad moment in musical history. Let's hope Kupper has more of these DAT delights stashed away.

Esc - "Hot Hands" (7:11)
Review: Dead Man's Chest is about to unleash all kinds of breakbeat mayhem with the third volume of Western Lore's Blunted Breaks series and here's a little taster of the full flavour experience to expect. Artificial Red kicks off with a hazy-but-heavy remix of DMC's 'Living Real' before L Own & Response's 'Rumination Cycles' enshrouds us with rasping tendrils of acid and loose live drum breaks. Flip for two more breath-taking moments in (blunted) breakcraft as Eusebeia captures that early Good Looking magic on 'Affinity' and ESC closes the EP with the powerful, cobweb blast celebration of hardcore's influence on 'Hot Hands'. Aeon Four & FFF - "Look Inside" (6:30)
Fanu - "Green Fields Forever" (5:09)
Esc & Mineral - "Photosynthesis" (6:14)
Review: On a mission to "make d&b great again", Finland's Straight Up Breakbeat pass through once more with the second of three EPs formed to showcase modern junglism. Kicking off, 'Mystery Machines' sees Glastonbury's Dead Mans Chest slam down some deadly amen choppage reinforced by haunting vocal FX and paranoid drones. Aeon Four & FFF's 'Look Inside' is a jungle-tekno roller, served with chunky hardcore style amens and a side of warm old-skool pads. Keeping the mid-90s vibe alive, the tripped out 'Green Fields Forever ' from Fanu - which drops hot on the heels of his greatly received remaster of Source Direct's 'Stars' - delivers airtight amen trickery, weaving synth washes and blissful dubby basslines. Esc & Mineral round things off with 'Photosynthesis', a pensive stepper highlighting cut-up breaks waltzing with cheeky synth nudges and a wide, rugged bassline. If the pioneers had buried some beefed-up tracks in a time-capsule to inspire future generations, they would probably sound a lot like 'States of Art II'.

Review: Two hip-swinging jungle joints from booty-bass bootleg kings Deekline and Ed Solo... With Rubi Dan's inimitable chatter and chubby roll on the bass, "Zunga" is an instant 'sing along' smasher, saturated in reggae juice and sun dried on the Jamaican Blue Mountains. "No No No", meanwhile, sees the Dawn Penn classic go under the expert knives of the Serial Killaz. Bulging with bulbous bass, the skank factor is set to max and the vocal is positioned perfectly in the mix... You really can't fail with this.

Hot This Year
Remember
Review: "We're sure there's absolutely no need to introduce Deekline and Ed Solo to you rowdy lot," say the liner notes on this double act of D&B madness, "so we'll save ourselves and you the bother..." With that unceremonious intro, we crash straight into the bad boys of jungle's latest package of riddims. "Hot This Year" harks back to the sunny yesteryear of summer 2013, where the rain clouds had parted ways, and the sun shone. Ragga jungle MCs were bibbydibbying about London, and good vibes were all that anyone could hear. "Remember" was inspired not only by the lovely sampled vocals here, but also because Deekline really wanted to remind Ed Solo about the time he lent him a fiver...apparently. Grab 'em while they're hot!

Always RIP (Eddie K & Minus remix)
Review: Veteran duo Ed Solo and Deekline slip out the latest studio production which craftily lifts the vocals from Donna Dee's Always placing them amidst a sea of powerful rave swerves as the track commences. The drama soon increases via a rhythmic heartbeat before the inevitable drop into wobble bass which is pleasantly offset by some fluttering synth oscillations. The arrival of some expansive key stabs as the track eeks towards the final moments provides some melodic depth. Badmen Eddie K and Minus take care of remix duties which takes a swerve towards vintage rolling drum and bass territory.

Review: A brand new label from the heart of D&B's spiritual city (London), Addictive Behaviour are launching with a serious statement of intent. Celebrating the Balkan hotbed of drum & bass creativity, each of these cuts looks east for inspiration. Detail's "Lost Time" is a wasp-like stepper, EastColors' "Mad Day" is a Renegade Hardware-style slammer with loopy, techno-like tenacity, L 33's "Discrete" belies its name with strident dramatic stabs while Minor Rain's "Powerball" nags with riffy insistency. Influx UK - "No. 1 Bass Rocker"
Electrosoul System - "Lifeline"
Review: Originally started many moons ago, Influx tests out the vocoder synth and lays a few of his very own vocals down. The title and a very catchy vocal hook: 'Number 1 Bass Rocker', rides throughout accompanied by a relative bassline and familiar beats. Another great piece of music in true Influx style with originality and completeness. A new face for the camp but already a rising star, Russian sensation Andrey Burtaev (Electro Soulsystem) may tie your tongue up a little on exit, but this young man sure does know how to put together a great musical d & b journey. A simple little piano riff is all that is needed to carry this gem along, although few components are stored in this track the weight needed is all there and turn those heads it will.

Review: Third in the series of exclusive vinyl presses off the 'Street Technique' LP, and arguably the strongest package yet! Cuts from Part 1 & 2, like the dancefloor destroying 'Friends' by Roni Size and 'Pegasus' from Drumsound & Bassline Smith have been receiving heavy rotation from the A-list DJ fraternity and this 4-track EP is already set to top that success. First up is the plastic explosive known as 'Cape Fear' which has been played exclusively by Zane Lowe (Radio 1) for the last 8 weeks, plus Grooverider, Hype, Roni Size and Andy C, etc. This deadly rhythm has been a favourite in the sets of many leading DJs and has been talked about non-stop in the clubs, on the forums and on the street. The deep penetration of 'Sub Sonic' is up next which is followed by Aussie's Skyver & Djon's contribution, the stupid knees-up of 'Knock Out'. If you ain't dancing to this you must be in the wrong rave. Finally there's a four-man collaboration featuring Skyver & Djon, E-Theory, Mark 7 on 'Gimme Something' featuring the vocals of Lezly. This is one for the rock crossover crew as guitars soar over metal-edged drum and bass.

Fresh from delivering Phuture T's bold and bombastic debut album Persuasive Funk, long-standing jungle innovators Inperspective serve up another tasty, jazzy, break-splattered brew with Earl Grey. A close and consistent cousin of the label, notably releasing his debut album Headwinds on Inperspective in 2017, he returns with six servings of loose limbed, airy, jazz jungle. From the lively snare chatter and wheezing, far-away horns of 'Lessons Learnt' to the hazier rave reverie of 'After They Turn The Rigs Off' by way of the desert island solitude and distant breeze of 'French Exit', once again Earl Grey reminds us why less is always more. "Time" squares our focus on the squidgy, freeform bassline that stretches like elastic, allowing space for the breaks to double up at all the right moments. "Bounce" has more drama per ounce thanks to its droning bass, Paradox-level drum work and detuned synth stabs. Finally Detail & Tiiu take the reins for "Delusion". Pad-heavy, shaker-soaked, breezy, emotional and sprung with a classic late 90s Trilogy style bassline; instant neck-hair raiser.

Review: Drum & bass meets Gypsy-Style... Clap your hands, grab your glass of red wine and dance...: "Vino Vino", that fat but secret hit on Eastenders' album "Along the Path", represents with raving Turkish brass and rides on wild beats. This proves that some centuries ago Turkish marching music made several marks on Romania. The racing track features the vocals of Roma singer Danut Vasile, coming from Romania. In the original lyrics the singer addresses his wife, confessing his love whilst asking "Come my dear, you belong to me!" And now we are getting these fine remixes: !DelaDap from Vienna bring on some midtempo fusion boasting live musicians for the funky, jazzy gypsy in you. The Greek-born DJ Release (3P/Frankfurt) delivers a bouncy hip hop track in old-school-manner with scratches and cuts. Germany's drum 'n' bass veteran Bassface Sascha teams up with DJ Franksen (You FM Clubnight) and their London born MC Markie J (you might know him from Eastenders 12" "Misterio") to create a big banging' tune that's likely to get the "Reeewind" it deserves. Who said gypsy-flavour, Reggeaton or soca wouldn't mix with drum 'n' bass? They don't just mix, they rock!

Review: Finally, The North Quarter upgrade Echo Brown's sublime debut EP for the label to wax status. Featuring four of the original five tracks, here we find the rising US artist linking up with Manchester's KinKai for the woozy opener 'Affirmations' before heading into a dream-like state as 'So Good' rolls with hazy neo-soul, 'Love Won't Do' takes us deep down SpectraSoul flavoured rabbit holes and 'Phenomena' brings us to a gully halt with its UK style shuffly drums and gritty, rasping bassline. There's no struggles to hear what's good here.

Falling (feat Kimi Recor)
Out Of Time (Calyx remix)
Review: "Falling" manages a rare feat in evoking the sensation it names - what it might sound like to accompany a man and his thoughts on a long, terrible fall for which there is no net, a condition beautifully expansive and horribly claustrophobic. A tremendous, demanding single.

You Don't Know (6:22)
Mig 29 Dub (7:09)
Review: Rising London talent Echo One jumps aboard the good ship Silent Force with four star-gazing slammers that all take root in the golden age of hardcore, jungle and that early Headzian wave of stark futurism. Highlights include the ice cold pad blasts of 'You Don't Know' and the cosmic brutalism of the title track but all four cuts will crush any rig in a 50 mile radius. Limited to 200 copies, ready for take-off?

Pathways (5:20)
Viewpoint (5:40)
Night Creeper (feat Linguistics) (5:07)
All Away (feat Pennygiles) (5:41)
Review: Fresh from signing exclusively to Shogun Audio, Ed:It justifies his position on the Team Assassin with four rush-whittled rollers. "Pathways" is loaded with ghostly vocal textures and structured around a super sharp two-step, "Viewpoint" is a much bulkier affair with detailed drum work that's produced and positioned so well it sounds like your own personal drummer sitting right beside, in front and behind you. "Night Creeper" takes us deeper into the darkness with the careful lyrical guidance of Linguistics. Finally we climax to the techy rolls of "All Away". Penned with the help of Pennygiles, it's a smart way to end a sharp EP.

Ed It & Pennygiles - "Set Theory" (Ulterior Motive remix) (4:46)
St Files & Response - "Wanna B 3" (6:19)
Total Science & FD - "Found A Reason Why" (6:25)
Villem & McLeod - "Strange You" (4:56)
Review: Player central: Not one artist on this EP doesn't command serious respect. Ed:It and Pennygiles's 2014 firecracker gets the treatment from Ulterior Motive, adding just a lick or two of shade to the already solid groove. ST Files and Response follow with a beautifully restrained deep stepper that's not dissimilar to erstwhile ST collaborator Marcus Intalex. Total Science and FD maintain the deep theme with a soulful rolling track that's not dissimilar to their Funky Technicians material. Villem and McLeod anchor the EP with a unique halftime roll that balances dark and light tighter than your nan's 1950s television. A truly spotless EP.

Boxcar
Review: A brand new label from the baldy prince of neurofunk, Piranha Pool is a new outlet for Ed Rush to explore the techiest tendrils of D&B. Igniting with a consummate mission statement, both "Scarabs" and "Boxcar" are instant classics! "Scarabs" comes with an almost psy-like texture to the bass as it digs deeper and deeper into neuro science. "Boxcar", meanwhile, looks back to the tech step days with wasp-like basses and a great vocal snippet that's executed with the perfection and attention to detail you'd expect from Mr Rush. Apparently there's a whole solo album ready to drop next year, too!

Review: Re-Release with adapted prices. A Dkay/Ill Skillz remix of the old classic "Sicknote". The new title track uses a Reece bass, marking a welcome return from the twisted duo.

Review: Ed Solo is broader than Broadway: a fact so well-known in the jungle fraternity, to mutter such a statement is akin to telling someone water is wet. Just in case you need reminding, here he takes the Barrington Levy classic and flips it into a super-skanked jungle jam that will guarantee rewinds on every single drop. Flip for further reload justice as Ed applies his technique to Eek-A-Mouse. The most distinctive voice reggae has ever given us, Mouse's nasal tones are the consummate fit to Solo's sonic stylings. Large, even by jungle cakes standards.
