Review: In today's climate, the term EP is surely one of the most misused by record labels; we've lost count of the number of two track 12"s that arrive at Juno HQ labelled as EPs in error by thems that don't know. Dutch drum and bass troupe Noisia are fully aware that it means Extended Play as this Purpose EP demonstrates with a full grip of some eight tracks slapped across four 12"s! Housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring artwork from Nik and Khomatech, Purpose features collaborations with contemporaries Phace, Prolix and Evol Intent. Noisia Fans will probably already have soaked up the viciously ill opening track "Oh Oh" and the remainder of the EP doesn't relent one bit with "Running Blind" a particular highlight.

MIR
Given Contact
Review: Last spotted on Metalheadz' incredible Platinum Breakz Vol 4 album with the rather mischievous "Gods Neighbours", Ulterior Motive return to the label with their first full 12" in almost a year. Riddled with an array of distinctively sounds, it's clear they've been hard at work. The kicks on "MIR" puncture with chubby weight while traces of their previous elephant antics wail over a series of tripped out samples and SFX. "Given Contact" is darker again; big splashy drums and industrial strength bass tears are the order of the day as we're pummelled into submission with timeless uncompromising dynamics.

Hot This Year
Remember
Review: "We're sure there's absolutely no need to introduce Deekline and Ed Solo to you rowdy lot," say the liner notes on this double act of D&B madness, "so we'll save ourselves and you the bother..." With that unceremonious intro, we crash straight into the bad boys of jungle's latest package of riddims. "Hot This Year" harks back to the sunny yesteryear of summer 2013, where the rain clouds had parted ways, and the sun shone. Ragga jungle MCs were bibbydibbying about London, and good vibes were all that anyone could hear. "Remember" was inspired not only by the lovely sampled vocals here, but also because Deekline really wanted to remind Ed Solo about the time he lent him a fiver...apparently. Grab 'em while they're hot!

Review: Beautifully presented on heavyweight clear vinyl with widescreen gatefold artwork, Technimatic's debut album is a heartfelt creative document from the off. Previously known as Technicolour and Komatic, since signing to Shogun as Technimatic, the duo has developed a stark liquid signature that's seeped in rich emotion and melody. Desire Paths is the zenith of their creative successes so far and is littered with highlights on every corner. From the swashing jungle breaks of "Beneath The Skies" to the resoundingly dark, twisted "Tectonic" via the slower, jazz-infused "Mucky Jeff", everything about this tingle with energy, passion and playability. Debut albums don't come any better than this.

Intelligent Manners & Enei - "Midnight Runaway"
Amaning & Dramatic - "Moods"
Review: The 12" focus of Dreazz and Drum Origins ongoing efforts to celebrate Fokuz surpassing the 15 year mark reaches it's concluding part with Episode 2.3. and it's fair to say the dancefloor pressure has not relented across the six slabs! On the A Side, the Enei featuring title track from Intelligent Manners 2012 LP Midnight Runaway is given a dusting down by Drum & Bass all star Lynx with the rolling vibe of the original replaced by a fresh beat science focused approach that really shows it in a new light. On the flip Amaning & Dramatic come through with a superb roller that just demands some 1210 attention.

Porcupine
Review: When news of the Systems offshoot of Critical Music was first announced, label CEO Kasra was quoted as saying it would follow the Modulations series as the next phase of "music that stands tall on its own but also as part of the Critical family". First up in the series is Halogenix -a Critical regular both in a solo capacity and as part of the production trio Ivy Lab - and this four track release sets a high standard of quality for any subsequent contributor to follow. "Her Waves" is a quite sublime production to kick things off, and from here Halogenix shows his range with real confidence. Eveson collaboration "Baby" sounds like a 21st C UK update on Timbalaand in his prime, whilst "Too Good" is a brisk exercise in icy vocal drum and bass and "Porcupine" is as spiky as the title suggests.

Four Tun (170 re-visit)
Arq
Review: With his place amongst the drum & bass community very much established thanks to a series of releases as Nolige, West Midlands producer Shaun Bateman signalled a new stage in his production trajectory with the SB81 project. The Blueprints EP is his second outing for the METHXX series from Metalheadz and it opens with a jagged sting of pure and unadulterated future jungle with the title track. "Blueprints" really showcases this producer's talent for twisting out interesting new rhythms from classic breaks and is complemented by some truly vicious sub bass. Face down and SB81 revisits previous production "Four Tun", sliding the tempo gauge up to 170 and easing the mood from dark to hopeful which contrasts nicely with the haywire half time headnodders delight that is final cut "Arq".

Villem - "Bring Us Closer"
Review: Bungle and Villem on IM:LTD - what a fusion of forces! First up Villem takes Bungle's super-steppy "You & Me", jettisons any unnecessary beef and sprinkles it with essential star-gazing elements such as lilting pads and soaring synth progressions. Villem's own "Bring Us Closer", meanwhile, shoots straight for the cosmos with a series of immersive weeping bass textures, a warped filtered loop and dreamy arpeggios before dropping into an absolutely stunning bassline that's so elastic it can flex itself inside out. Essential.

Review: Logistics is back! More or less absent in a solo capacity since dropping the 2012 anthem Fear Not, Matt Gresham delivers Polyphony his sixth Logistics album in as many years for Hospital Records. Long term fans of both Logistics and Hospital will immediately resonate with the 13 tracks here with Gresham signalling a return to the vivid, life affirming brand of drum and bass that helped establish the classic Hospital sound. Uplifting piano chords, euphoric basslines and sublime vocal chops abound on Polyphony with a raft of collaborators including new names such as Hugh Hardie and Maduk as well as veteran producer Sonic and Gresham's brother Dan Nu Tone.

Review: One of jungle and drum & bass's darkest benchmark setters, Keith is one of the key founders who has physically carved the scene's angular, gritty features both as a producer and a label owner. Here we find him both forms as he serves up his own new material across a neat double 12" and sheds light on Dread Recordings' family in 2014. Ranging from his own epic Black Box-sampling roller "Greedy Me" to the jazzy keys and roaring Reece on Savage Rehab's "Sinking Feeling". From Nautilus's horn-heaving "December Dreams" to DJ Tuskan's Krust-level industrial funker "A Wicked Man". 20 years deep and still pushing forward, its clear Dread is in fine, fine fettle right here.

Decoy
Review: Whether they hooked up as like-minded souls or they were paired up by Horizons, the tag-teaming of Cern and Overlook is a stroke of genius. Cern's industrial undertones and Overlook's sense of spaciousness complement each other consummately, fusing to create two dark slices of minimal brutal beauty. "Nevada Ghost" pummels with strategic kicks and unnerving textures and far-away cries. "Decoy", meanwhile, takes the power factor up a notch with stuttering breaks and an immovable spine of iced out pads that flurry and flicker with subtle menace. Seriously heavy.

Smash It
Review: No stranger to the Program operation thanks to last year's heavy roller Scrummage, the man like Stealth returns to RAM's deeper minded sub label with the highly anticipated Homage plate. First teased in a mix for a RAM night at Fabric late last year, "Homage (Back To You)" sees Ali Pearce back behind the buttons with Stylus for a raucous slab of Drum and Bass that swings with precision between the heavily filtered vocal hook and moments of outright darkness. Yo couldn't come up with a more appropriate name for the jackhammer rhythmics that is B Side gripper "Smash It" which has a killer break down.

Soligen & Type 2 - "One More"
Review: More anniversary action from the Dutch dynamos... First up is Soul Deep founder and LA D&B badman Scott Allen who fuses big funk with reggae as a full bodied horn sample drops into the sweetest skank you'll hear all summer. Want to celebrate Fokuz's 15th birthday with something a little darker? Jump on Soligen & Type 2's "One More": Cutty, jumpy jungle that slaps relentlessly with twisted ragga samples and an uncompromising dynamic, it's not dissimilar to Dom & Roland's "Unofficial Jah". The Fear
4 Days
Review: Following the massively successful re-release of "The Nine" earlier this year, Vegas explores the BCUK vaults once again for more formative fire-ups from one of the UK's most influential and revered drum & bass outfits. Released in 1999, "The Fear" EP set the foundations for their agenda-setting debut album Digital Nation. "The Fear" wears its jungle influences on its sleeve with passion. Icy pads and deep space echoes before the paranoid drop, it sums up the sound of the entire 90s taking in both Detroit, Berlin and London as it does so. "4 Days" is more direct and aggressive thanks to its relentless bassline that scuffs up and down the spectrum with chainsaw menace. Both have stood the test of time with low-end immaculation.

Review: Four albums deep and still as timeless as ever... London's Utah Jazz is untainted by scenes or tired old sub-genres. He simply makes lush drum & bass that refuses to stand anywhere else but on its own. Contrasting shades and vibes with a delicate eye for atmospheres and grooves, Portfolio takes off where Groove Therapy left us. Highlights include the cosmic flurries and dreamy graininess of "Roll That Blues", the emotional vocal cries and soaring bass tones of "Neckless" and the cool lower tempo explorations of "Love Everlasting". And this is only six golden moments of the entire 14 track album; miss at your peril.

INeedYou
1 2 3 4
Review: Shogun Audio boldly claim you wont hear anything else like "INeedU" from Rockwell, but it's a claim that stands up once you've made it through to the run out groove. Allegedly inspired by the mixtapes Rockwell listened to as a youth when house, disco and hardcore records were played vastly sped up, "INeedU" is a bastard amalgamation of sonic elements all played out at 170bpm 4/4 tempo and is guaranteed to have jaws dropping as well as eyebrows raising on the dancefloor. As ever Tom Green's peerless production techniques shine through. On the flip meanwhile, "1_2_3_4" picks up where Green left off with previous Shogun jammer "Detroit" with a totally brutal exercise in peaktime darkside deployment.

Review: We're only waist deep into 2014 but we'll say this: NFM's proliferation this year deserves some serious medals. Not because of quantity. Not because they've appeared on such a wide range of well-respected labels. But because the quality is of an unnerving consistency that there are rumours Joe and Emilio are actually Terminator-like machines. Each of the five cuts on offer here are perfect examples: from the pneumatic steps and throaty gurgles of "Oscillator 3" to the matchless warped wobbles of "She" to the seat-of-pants speedway sub rumbles of the decade-bounding "Pedestrian" , this is the duo at their most demonstratively sharp, timeless and produced with pristine roughness. We'd complete this "Food" salute with a gambit about the entire EP being tasty, but D&B like this commands so much more than silly word play. Unarguably essential.

Review: Earlier this year, Young Echo members Vessel, El Kid, and Jabu made their Blackest Ever Black debut with their Killing Sound project, with a four-track self-titled EP presented rather provocatively by the label as "oblique soundsystem murders", pressed "obnoxiously loud." Here "Six Harmonies" from that EP is given a dark jungle reworking under the name "$ixxx Harmonie$ Version", where cyclonic breakbeats collide with gritty textures in much the same manner as Demdike Stare's Testpressing releases. This swift one-sided follow-up may only have one track, but its extended aural assault has considerable stopping power.

Still Passin
Review: You read it right - Jungle Cakes reaches its 28th instalment, this time led by the inimitable DJ Deekline. Catching up with the first track, "Alibaba" is a perfect jungle tune sampled from John Holt's reggae classic of the same name. Retro for the old heads but still vibing enough to lift the dancefloor up a level, this is something special. "Still Passin" is a fresh, more modern jungle approach featuring tons of flashy dancehall samples (and one from the charts a short way back - spot it) and breaks that just don't quit. Dust off your dancing shoes, this is gonna get messy.

Spirit Bounce
Review: Usually found in partnership with Blocks on their own Narratives imprint, here we find Escher flying solo with two beautifully contrasting compositions. "Deep Architecture" has already been causing a big stir online due to its wild time signature and off-beat percussive patterns. Physically it's drum & bass, but mentally it's most definitely techno as it pummels with loopy drum insistency. "Spirit Bounce", meanwhile, is a stark and breezy stepper that oozes space and shimmers with emotive synths. It's a simple but soulful synthesis many have attempted over the year but only few have mastered... Klute, Marcus Intalex and now Escher, too. The return of 31 has been one of D&B's best stories so far this year.

Magic Mirror
Review: Fokuz's 15 year celebrations continue with a serious ante-up. Every release in this series has been essential but, as you'd expect from the Spearhead boss, these are next level. "Praying Man" takes a mystic vocal and uses it as a rhythmic device that drives the emotional groove into lush, spine-melting mid noughties Hospital territory. "Magic Man", meanwhile, skips with a precision punctuated swing and crisp guitars before dropping into a short but dreamy reverse breakdown then rebuilding with shimmering pianos.
