Nightmare (Mensah remix)
Nightmare (Bassboy remix)
Nightmare (Cotti & Coki remix)
Review: No Hats No Hoods. It's a name that certainly sticks in the mind, playing on irony, dripping with attitude, oozing a self-assured confidence. True to form, this glorious release on what is undoubtedly one of the kings of underground grime labels does just that. Enter Badness feat. Skepta & Lil Nasty, for "Badness" - the 10th release from the imprint. The delectable spooky intro, growling "Nightmaaare" in breathy, ominous tones, sets a precedent for things to come. Its inky blank bassline penetrates the very essence of your being; a scurrilous interplay of spoken word, rumbling bass, jittering synths and hissing breaks prevails. DMZ's Coki and Cotti deliver a decidedly more upbeat remix, full of bouncing, stepping rhythms, before Bristol-based HENCH producer, Mensah, comes up with a dollop of screechy synth-driven dubstep to break things up. Bassboy, in stark contrast, fixes up, looks sharp (to use an overused grime idiom), so that the words are spoken in discerning clarity, with more of a bassline vibe. It's a cracking release all round, though - highly recommended.

Catch A Body
Banshee
Review: Catch a body eh? Let's hope it's not a fat one. Oh wait, it is... Very fat indeed. Bulbous, in fact, thanks to its array of obese subs that wriggle and worm beneath the stark, spiked out string stabs, each one overlapping each other with menace. "Banshee" is even fatter again as we're treated to a whole series of basses, each one shouting loudly, eager for our attention as more dagger-like drums heave and weave amidst the dynamic. Purist grime - both of these Bristol bangers are screaming for MCs to do their damage!

Boylan & Logos - "Orders" (4:13)
Boylan, Slimzee & USF - "The Mould" (4:40)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Boylan landed on Youngsta's Sentry. A master of dark subby funk, usually found more around the grime and breaks corners, his sound has always lent itself to the more traditional dubstep vibe. As proved by these two savage collaborations. "Orders" sees him teaming up with old mate Logos for a hammering halftime vibe that pays respect to the traditions but does with a slight techno twist. Flip for "The Mould" where the breaks come out in full force. A proper swinging jam with wild drums and an elasticated bassline, there's nice nod to the turn of the century dark garage and early Bingo feel as we're pushed and shunted into bassy parts unknown. Sentry just keep on smashing it.

LTHL - "Unknown" (4:41)
Review: Bournemouth boys It's Foundation return with another super-limited, all-corner flavour frenzy. Patrick Brian's "Twelve77" kicks off on a sci-fi instrumental grime vibe, all sirens and star-gazing, Fish gets busy on a sweet two-step vibe with a well-known vocal sample and mischievous bass oscillations while MOREOFUS smelts downs our souls with the late night trap/dubstep hybrid "Lord". We wrap up with wave wonderment as Liquid Ritual's LTHL closes the EP with a deep breeze stepper that's dense in atmospheres but light in its rolling drums. Acutely on-point.

Review: It's now five up for the Pearly Whites crew and their self titled series of on going various artist's collections. This one kicks off with the slow and heavy sounds of Deseplate's 'One Day' before the flute laced, jazz-tinged and stoner delights of Boss Mischief's 'Ice Cold.' There are more fuel good and heady sounds with lush flues from Invader Spade then Drone gets more dark and gritty on 'Lil Jug.' Lemzly Dale and BR3 close out this superb mix of trap, grime and dubstep.

The World (Tee Bee remix)
Review: Fresh from the success of his Eclipse LP on Dub Police, Emalkay hands over standout track "The World" for some remix action. Trolley Snatcha delivers an energetic remix with Lena Cullen's vocal pretty much intact and it's just the right side of commercial, likely to appeal to the Radio 1 dubstep crowd and those with more mainstream leanings. Teebee's version is typically stripped back, just enough darkness to balance with the vocal, reminiscent of his remix of Brandy's "You Don't Know Me" all those years ago - proper streamlined D&B. A very solid remix package all round.

4.42 OZ
Review: Swedish duo L Wiz gets the honour of the first Joker-less Kapsize release, and positively thrives in the spotlight. "Straightjacket" is vintage Kapsize, delivering heavyweight drama via the slowly rising synth menace which accrues a schizophrenic, jagged edge as the track, driven by punching industrial drum snaps, edges towards a future digital flex. Despite this, it's the b side weight of "4.42 OZ" which truly impresses, as woozy R n B synths tinged with neon soaked sadness flutter over the lazy metallic half step stutter. Killer synth freakout in the mid section!

Run It
Review: Rush Hour's flawless Direct Current imprint welcomes a new artist into the fold, as Lazer Sword's Lando Kal drops two neon-tinged house bombs in a similar vein to his excellent release for Hotflush earlier this year. "Maneuver" sounds as classic as it is contemporary, occupying the same retro-futuristic space of house music as Azari & III, building its energy with a series of stop-start pitch bent synths and a melody that pays homage to numerous 90s house classics. "Run It" meanwhile is a more bass heavy number on an 80s electro tip, combining a schizophrenic drum machine, and saccharine vocal samples to create something that whilst not quite as filled with colour saturated euphoria as its counterpart, is no less forward thinking in its approach.

"Harca" of course originates from Marco Giuliani's sublime Ride with Us mixtape for Circadian Rhythms and was a stand out cut, a glistening ride through grime envisaged in the futuristic world of Ridley Scott's Bladerunner. Review: Last year was huge for young producer Marco Giuliani AKA Last Japan. With "Qi" garnering huge support from industry and his remix of Crystal Fighters "Xtatic Truth" appearing on TV series Skins Last Japan went on to release two further records on Southern Fried and gain mass support from the likes of Radio 1's Toddla T and DJ Target. 2011 and the rising star continues on the up and releases 'Settle Down/Girl featuring Bobbie Gordon' on Four40 Recordings. "Settle Down" combines the heartfelt lyrics of Gordon as Last Japan's drawn out chord sequences squirm over a powerful and pushing sub bass; sterling remixes come from Bondax, Asa and Stumbleline. Second track "Girl" speeds things up as a highly electronic concoction of bleeps form the captivating high end while more rumbling sub bass echoes below for depth.

Review: Legion is a new collaborative project featuring contributions from Boylan, Trends, P Jam and D.O.K, with the aim being to fuse elements of dubstep, grime, breaks and techno into fresh slabs of 140 BOM dancefloor pressure. As debuts go, We Are Many is certainly confident and quietly impressive. Our pick of a very strong bunch is opener 'We Are Many', a hot-stepping dancefloor stomper that peppers a tough beat with metallic percussion hits, warped sub-bass and industrial style electronic textures. That said, there's much to enjoy elsewhere across the EP, including deep dubstep wobbler 'Boards Don't Hit Back', the fuzzy mutant techno of 'Bewildered' and the heavy dubstep pressure of closing cut '3rd World Cup'.

Adrian Lenz - "Cover Me" (Ol Oil' riddim)
Sandman - "No Prisoners"
Review: Illuminating debut release from London label Blank Mind, introducing the Grenadian musical tradition of Jab Jab. Integral to the Grenadian carnival Jouvert, the Jab Jab take to the streets drinking rum from 2 in the morning, playing self-made percussion instruments including sticks, buckets, and cowbells. Quite similar rhythmically to soca, the tracks Blank Mind have licensed are quite simply brilliant and it's worth doing your own research into Jab Jab, not least for the darkly excellent videos. Adrian Lenz's "Cover Me" is pulsating, the vocals an intrinsic part of the rampant rhythms amidst a cacophony of whistling melodies. On the flip, Sandman's "No Prisoners" is a more stripped back accompaniment, his vocals menacingly sounding out over a cavernous refrain of ankle deep bass and intricate percussion. It's all complemented by some equally dark cover art. Tip!

Review: Although the vaguely mysterious Letherette duo may hail from Wolverhampton, their hearts seem to lie in sunnier climes on the basis of D&T, this 12" precursor to their forthcoming debut LP on Ninja Tune . The title track "D&T" is a gorgeous slice of shimmering synth-heavy Euro-disco, compressed and propelling, it's the sound of hurtling down the Cote d'Azur in vintage sportscar in 1986. Clark and Dorian Concept are smart choices to remix the track; the former delivers an equally killer slo-mo version, whilst his Austrian counterpart throws in some steel drums and rat-tat-tat-tat percussion in his mix. Non album cut "She Shines" rounds out the 12" with a slab of jazzy trip hop that will appeal greatly to long term Ninja Tune followers.

Review: Trance-house God Avicii was remixed by a rather fancy collection of artists this year, all bringing something new to his original, a track that pretty much sums up what's going on now in the electro-progressive area, plus, we even get an acappella! Skrillex starts by transforming it into a neo-rave wobble tear up, proceeded by Cazzette NYC Mode Mode who rips apart and injects a nastier strain of electro into it. I Wanna Be Your Telephone (Tiga Party Like It's 19909 remix)
Review: Bit of an all star cast behind "I Wanna Be Your Telephone" with Nikka Costa providing backing vocals for the distinct croon of Jamie Lidell, whilst Beck adds some guitar licks to the shuffling dirt funk. It's the Tiga remix which has been getting the bloggerati increasingly excited since YouTube footage first surfaced - and with good reason too. The instrumentation of Lidell's original is mostly discarded, with Tiga crafting a sleek modern electro acid funk groove replete with scattergun synth stabs and killer drum rolls. The added emphasis placed on Costa's sultry breathing adds the requisite Prince-ness that Tiga's title alludes to. Bill Youngman's jerking mutation of album track "You Are Waking" rounds things off nicely.

Review: It's been some years since Lil Silva offered up one of his white labels, but he's back on the case with the taut workout that embodies the Gobble That 12". Lean electro is most definitely the order of the day, not least on "Track 1". It's all about the synths on this cut, as they ping and wobble around with the kind of restraint that made old Rotters Golf Club records so addictive. It's intentionally twisted to inspire just the right amount of freaky dancing. "Track 2" is a deeper affair on a more housey rhythm, but there's still plenty of rudeness at work in the cheeky bass synth.

Released on the hugely impressive Night Slugs imprint, which seems to grown in stature with every release, this is a full-throttle peak time bomb. It's backed up on the b-side by "No Hooks," which pays tribute to Kenny Dope but really puts us in mind of Mr Oizo's "Flat Beat" put through a shredder. "Informa" brings the wave factor with its swooning synths while the string-laced "Grand Line" is much harder on the rata-tat-tat factor. The title track takes the prize for its slow-marching drama and thunder-drums ghosting from the corners before quickly retreating. "Falcon 2" brings us to a wonderfully sleazy close with big purple-funk feels on the flabby synth leads. Ready for take off?

Review: NY Transit Authority and Conqueror's contributions to the Lobster Boy imprint are still ringing in our ears here at Juno, and it took something special to match them. Redlight takes the helm and proves he's more than up to the task with this rowdy double drop. "Mosquito" will undoubtedly be familiar to anyone who refers to themselves as "locked on" to Rinse FM on a regular basis, revolving around an insectile horn manipulation that just about remains the right side of cringeworthy and immediately gratifying UKF house patter. You might doubt the longevity of such a track but you can't doubt its effect on a dancefloor, a description that's equally worthy of the B Side track "Planet X", whose rude intentions are clear as soon as the first wave of sub bass pressure comes rising to the fore.

Even
Review: Since his Hotflush backed emergence via a spot on Scuba's DJ Kicks and subsequent EP, Belgian producer Tim Van de Meutter aka Locked Groove has been widely embraced for his obvious floor fusing talent. Subsequently welcomed into the Turbo fold as part of Tiga and co's latest zeitgeist acknowledgement, Locked Groove returns to Hotflush in triumphant form with the Keep It Simple EP. You might presume Van De Meutter is doing just that on the opening track "Keep Running", which seemingly focuses on a core progression of rattling percussion and acidic bass stabs before a mid point swerve sees an increase in euphoric builds for a more propulsive finish. On the flip, "Aller Simple" adds some more swing to the percussive equation while playfully toying with the stabbing melodic qualities, and "Even" winds down the relentlessness with a nice spot of introspective beatdown caked in crackly atmosphere.

Goat Stare
Review: "Goat Stare", by Loefah, is bass science of the highest order. Probably the ultimate 'half step' track, a style that Loefah almost single-handedly pioneered. Taking it's title from the television series "The Men Who Stare At Goats" - about undercover research and use of bizarre military techniques and weapons - and using a sample from the David Cronenberg film "Scanners", the track is built on a slow half step rhythm, a huge echoey drum and a giant bassline that’s created so that on a big system it literally 'scans' your body, which means you feel it all over. "Root" is more musical, but it's another slug stepper, thick and heavy like molasses, with a big building modulating bassline, thick miasmic echoey toms and symbols. Not to be listened too whilst operating heavy machinery!

We would like to submit as supporting evidence this reissue of a stone cold classic split 12" from 2009 from serious dubstep heavyweights Loofah and Coki. Loefah's 'system' is possibly his catchiest rhythm yet, sweeping electro riffs and zipped-up halfstep swagger fully in place. The overt electro influence of 'System' heralds a healthy direction for dubstep, and will make even more sense when the four four exterminator called "left leg out" drops on Dmz 10 imminently. Mala and Coki offer 'Molten', spooked synths and a lashing of subbass in fine DMZ tradition. His "Marked 4 Death Gunman" flips the classic Slewdem crew Gunman riddim, adding his own hardcore twist with "Lullaby" from Gobstopper graduate Iglew offering a neat thrust between moments of calm and chaos. Spooky & Edgem Records artist Boylan trace a line between South and East London on "Peckham to Hackney" whilst Oxford-based newcomer Jawside closes out the 12? with hyper-effective angular dancefloor bomb "Blurred Rain."

Squeeze Me
Face Me
Dare Me
White Noise
Review: Just when you thought you had Al Bleek and Damon Drama's Non Plus sorted, they go and make a sharp diversion and take you somewhere completely different. The destination? LOL. And no, that's not a joke. A teaser for their forthcoming album Me Me, the tracklist reads a little like an Alice In Wonderland list of instructions or perhaps a seductive dance; "Squeeze Me" kicks off with sinuous R&B style vocals and enticing synths with a slow, lolhloping half step rhythm, which inevitably drags you in deep like a tidal current of sound, while "Face Me" follows a languid 4/4 drum pattern drenched in late night synths. "Dare Me", up next, mirrors the sonic palette with shimmering, spaced out atmospherics and more glorious, syrup sweet lyrics. Visceral and rather enthralling, it bears the hallmarks of nocturnal dance music with throbbing b-line and infectious, enveloping synth-work, but with an underlying pop/R&B sensibility that shines through the darkness. Crackly, droning atmospherics sit beneath ice cold bleeps on finale "White Noise". A far cry from much of the recent Non Plus output for sure, but a remarkable release nonetheless which we urge you to get your teeth into.

Degrade Me
Review: If you've yet to indulge in Me Me, the mildly mysterious debut album from LOL which surfaced via Non Plus earlier this year, then this second vinyl sampler is a perfect introduction. Formed around a sound that skitters between dubstep and finely crafted cinematic pop, LOL don't really have any contemporaries, though tracks such as "Trophy Wife" and "Quarter Life Crisis" bear positive comparisons with vintage Lamb or Moloko. Elsewhere "VHS" demonstrates their penchant for swirling and mournful instrumental introspection. Whilst the four tracks here will puzzle some fans of Non Plus, it's a credit to the label that they have the cojones to step this far outside of expectations.

Crystal Caverns 1991
Vulcan Mill Acid
Review: R&S Records gave us a rather fine prelude to Galaxy Garden, Lone's debut album, in the form of the resplendent rave of Crystal Caverns 1991. A true highlight of that set, "Crystal Caverns 1991" is reminiscent of the producer's former glory "Pineapple Crush", though there's a lot more rhythmic intricacy at play here. Kicking off a breakstep beat with those sweet but punchy 90s synths that Cutler is renowned for, the track cuts into a deadly rave motif without so much as a pause in the beat and it's like being back in, er, 1991. The B Side "Vulcan Mill Acid" is equally self explanatory, an alien 303 workout with added cowbell that slips into steel pan territory without any of the wetness of a Jammy xx production.

Ark
Chalk Knots
Eagles Fated Pilars
Review: Black Acre presents some long awaited new material from avant garde Scottish producer Loops Haunt which should be listed in the Urban Dictionary under the meaning of "Next Level". Approach the three tracks here with the advance warning they are swamped with intensity and likely to shred your cerebral cortex like pancetta, not least the opening track "Ark" which channels the kind of epic metal refrains Justice have failed miserably at executing in the opening moments, before breathlessly emerging after a heavily compressed mid section as expansive bass heavy soundscapes of the highest order. Both "Chalk Knots" and "Eagles Fated Pilars" offer further challenging listening material and you get the impression that there are few other producers out there possible of stretching sounds in such a manner. If Skrillex and his du(m)bstep cohorts are the nadir of the genre then Loops Haunt at least offers some insight in how to push it forward.

Review: Time to get re-activated: LEA returns to his own imprint with five blazing instrumentals. All flexing around his ice cold broken drum signature, the tension is high and so are the contrasts as tracks like 'Fractal' gentle balance subtle piano vapour trails over epic sludgy toxic bass textures and 'Wow Signal' brings joyous chords over swaggering machine funk breaks. Elsewhere 'Curtain Twitcher' is dark garage for the 21st century pranged out neighbourhood watch crew, 'Clocks Ticking' is a wonderfully spacious and wonky moment in time while 'Misdirected Content' shuts the EP down with humungous treacle-like subs and heft slabs of emotion. Powerful.

Review: Sub bass silver from Australia's LQ as Echo Chamber dibby up his parts to Dubkasm and Ben Dudding for two stunning remixes. The formers gets mucky on a halftime digidub twist that will resonate well with fans of Moresound or Amit. The latter strips the back both in elements and time with an authentic Scientist-style studio re-build, all FX textures and thick whiffs of the cosmos. LQ's own dub jungle shakedown "Come In" seals this on-point deal.

Review: LSN's music is always constructed with a real sense of foreboding and plenty of textural girt. That is the case again here with some enacting and snapping drum work and extra heavy mic work. But that's not to say the sound is austere - they still draw you in with enticing rhythms and structures that you want to gaze at. 'Power Shift' (feat Flowdan) is a top opener with arching bass and badman bars while 'Devolve' is more angsty and unsettled with its broken beats. 'Trust' is icy and full of late-night tension then LSN & Youngsta's 'End Theme' (feat ZAMEEN-A) closes with some lush string sounds over neck-snapping beats.

I Dream Of Bahia (Dusty & Bartellow remix)

Love Me Good (Simbad remix)
Review: In its original form, lead track "I Dream Of Bahia" is a breezy blast of humid summer air - a snappy fusion of Latin-tinged grooves, Portuguese vocals and cocktail-sporting jazz guitars. It's joined by a decent remix by Dusty & Bartellow, who turn it into a slo-mo house groove laden with sweaty Brazilian percussion and bowel-bothering sub-bass pulses. "Love Me Good", meanwhile, offers an Afro-tinged take on bumpin' soul, with a strong female vocal and more delicious guitar solos. Scene stalwart Simbad remixes, offers a remix that sits somewhere between Latin-tinged broken beat and classic US garage - all bouncy organs, skippy beats and hissing hi-hats.
