Midnight In Peckham (7:00)
Luxury Motivation (5:52)
Review: Chaos In The CBD have quietly been building an impressive reputation for some time, with releases on Hot Haus, Amadeus and Needwant all hitting the spot. Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".

Review: The Manchester electronic music scene has long been defined by its' openness towards warm and soulful sounds. Contours, the production alias of percussionist turned producer Tom Burford, neatly fits this historic brief. Rich, toast and evocative, but with enough space in the mix for individual instruments and elements to shine, Technician is a quietly impressive debut. With Burford's loose, organic percussion to the fore, plus occasional saxophone, bass guitar and double bass, the EP's six tracks impressively meld elements from dreamy deep house, modern soul, West African rhythms, jazzy house, and hard-to-describe downtempo grooves. As a result, it's a comforting and hugely entertaining debut.

Subtropique

Cat: RS 038. Rel: 09 Mar 21
Individuality Riddim (6:42)
Subtropique (4:40)
What Now (5:14)
Barretto (Tienes Algo) (6:58)
Zularic Permutations (4:25)
Review: Bradley Zero's ever hard to pin down but always excellent Rhythm Section International comes through with some deep house excellence here. Far from standard sounds, though, these tunes are infused with all manner of mystic referees. 'Individuality Riddim' is tinny and percussive, empty yet compelling. 'Subtropique' pairs aquatic sound design with shimmering rhythms that seem to owe a debt to djembe rhythms while 'What Now' is astral house with cosmic vibes to spare. There are also two darker, more percussive tunes to close out this fantastically expressive and adventurous EP.

Cadera (5:25)
Residual Heat (4:27)
Self Oscillation (4:21)
Surface Tension (5:07)
Neo Costeno (6:32)
Pulso Invisible (3:39)
Review: Ecuadorian maestro Nicolas Cruz is back on Rhythm Seciton to follow up his last EP Subtropique which proved a big hit. "I'm always trying to re-interpret this Afro-Caribbean feeling, and trying to figure out how I could humanize this through the machines," he says of his approach and it certain is the case here. He mixes up some worlds rhythms with twitchy techno drums and electronic synths to make for something totally new on all of the tracks. The heavy, skipping kicks of 'Residual Heat' is a real favourite while 'Self Oscillation' is a catering percussive jam to pack the floor. Another great outing.

Review: Simeon Jones and Nathanael Williams impressed with their 2017 debut on Breaker Breaker, so hopes are high for their first full-length excursion on Rhythm Section International. There's a loose concept behind it - it was inspired by the idea that "all black people are from Mars" - but this only seems to exist as an excuse for the pair to utilize spacey analogue synths, nods towards 1970s space funk and an overall afro-futurist flex that draws together a variety of interconnected styles (think spacey hip-hop, jazz-funk, organic deep house and far-sighted electronica). It's a quietly Impressive set all told, with the pair making great use of a string of high-profile (and hugely talented) guest performers, including sticks-man Yussef Dayes, Andrew Ashong and Yazmin Lacey.
