Ode Ireti (5:42)
Ode Ireti (Amapiano edit) (3:30)
Ode Ireti (Nitefreak remix) (6:27)
Ode Ireti (Deroos remix) (6:07)
Review: MoBlack continues to champion the best Afro house with this latest drop from &friends, El Jay and Oluwadamvic. 'Ode Ireti' appears here in four different versions, leading in with the original mix which comes bathed in sultry piano and an understated rhythmic roll perfect for sundown moments. The 'Amapiano Edit' unsurprisingly refigures the groove for all your log drum needs, and then Nitefreak jumps in on the flip for a smouldering deep house version and then Deroos brings his own tracky energy and moody chords to the table to complete a highly workable track served four ways.

Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

Review: Every once in a while, a release is slung our way that charms us so deeply that we're not sure what angle approach it from. Deliberately retro, but with one foot in the cosmic, Star Creature are a Chicago-based label whose take on space disco is extra janky and electronic. AVOP's new track 'Purple' is rattlesnaking and sultry, delving into a pitch-perfect rumination of a disco sound that 70's producers could only dream of achieving. Coming to purple 7" vinyl, the track makes "Russian violet cyber grapes rain in Chicago", as asserted by the artist.

Acoustic Cut
Review: After a successful debut release with Untitled Gear, Croatian label continues their journey through fields and forests. Still exploring the Russian Federation, only this time they hired Udacha's honcho and main protagonist A5. Record kicks off with 'Fantasy'. A dreamy kalimba piece which eventually evolves into a deep house track and could be described as a soundtrack from your latest dream while 'Raw Abstractionism' doesn't disappoint it's name. On the flip side we are introduced to the afro banger 'Torri Wowo' which feels almost like driving through safari on a truck. 'Acoustic Cut' calms things down and brings us to an end with a clear message.

Review: The Analogue Attic microverse is defined by a unified commitment to the deepest ideas of where house music can head, and no one embodies that spirit better than Alex Albrecht. On this latest 12" he's heading into the velvet folds of low tempo chugger 'The Blacksmith' and downtempo dream state 'Coles Ridge' with elegiac piano sparkling atop fathoms-deep pads and the softest of percussion. This is house music as a vessel for pure relaxation and sentimental meditation, and across six tracks Albrecht offers up balm after balm to soundtrack oceanic realms of calm - a much needed tonic for the frenetic pace of modern life.

Dirty South Dirt (Anticipation dub)
Review: Kai Alce on FXHE is a real coming together of two US powerhouses, and so it proved when this EP first landed back in 2010. It finds the Atlanta house mainstay in fine form on 'Dirty South Dirt'. It's a humid, stripped-back, dusty house cut with supple synth daubs adding warmth and soul. All these years on the track has lost none of its magic, and on the flipside is an 'Anticipation dub' which layers in some sensors vital whispers to the dubby, cuddly and deep house drums. These are two classy cuts.

Review: Almacks is back on their own self-titled label with a second sizzling 12". This one opens up with a brilliant Afro-house sound that has playful basslines riding up and down the scale as falsetto vocals unfurl in curious fashion up top. Add in plenty of organic percussion and you have a subversive sound. Things get much more sensors and late night on the second cut then the B-side fuses gorgeous downtempo live drums and neo-soul stylings with dusty, funked up house and plenty of Moodymann-style moods. One of those EP that oozes genuine warmth and soul.

Review: Back in 2018, Alphonse served up what was widely hailed as a mini masterpiece with his lush Afro-dub-house and basement breaks EP. Now it is repressed by the (Emotional) Especial label complete with standout remixes from The Pilotwings and DJ Normal 4. First up is the original 'Smokey' which is a fresh British house tune with congas, bongos, kick, dub bass lines and chants riding twisted FX. Fellow original 'Glint AM' strips things back with throbbing 808s and Detroit inspired strings and Akai vocals. The Pilotwings retake of 'Smokey' is a floating groove that strops things away to pure goodness and DJ Normal nods to the atmospherics of Biosphere and Leiner.

Review: DJ Dez Andres aka Andres who is known for being both the DJ with legendary hip-hop act Slum Village, but also a DJ and beatmaker in his own right, has been really busy this summer. We now get treated to the fruits of his labours with a series of new and limited edition white label 12"s that feature a bunch of his masterfully worked edits. First up is the whistle-laced broken beat workout 'Boogie', then comes 'Maxin' which is a slow motion and sensuous sound with downtempo beats and silky pads and 'Talking' then shuts down with another alluring vocal and cuddly, romantic late-night feel.

Kampangola (3:31)

El Bailador (2:49)
Review: ARN4L2's first-ever solo vinyl project is a doozy. Across five cuts he looks to the dance floor from his own unique perspective and mixes up Congolese soukous, Colombian Bullerengue, Nigerian highlife, Caribbean soca, and good old house music. His style is colourful and psychedelic and it really is fresh across the hurried, skittish percussive rhythms of 'Rompecuero' and deeper Afro-funk and soul of 'Caribe.' 'Kampangola' brings great instrumental displays and 'Papasukus' is pure summer music. A super strong EP from an artist well worth watching this year.

Review: Niels Nieuborg has long been a player on Holland's live music scene, largely working with ex-pat musicians from Carpe Verde and Surinam. This superb three-track EP marks his first recorded output and includes collaborations with vocalists Americo Brito and Orlando Julius. The latter stars on two up-tempo chunks of boogie-era Afrobeat that sit somewhere between the Moog-driven brilliance of William Onyeabor and the up-tempo urgency of vintage Afro-disco. It's arguably A-side "Nos Magia", featuring Brito's distinctive vocals, that really stands out, though. Spacey and incessantly funky with fizzing electronics, urgent Clavinet lines and crispy Afro-funk guitars, it's not only a killer club cut but also a thing of rare beauty.

Green City (15:32)
Aker The Lion God (15:53)
Review: Contemporary Afro-house producer and record procurer Auntie Flo tops up his flux-satisfactory A State Of Flo label with a re-pressed bleary-eyed house number, 'Green City', a track first released in 2024 and which paid homage to the Afrobeat legend and activist Fela Kuti. First debuted in a revelrous setting at 2019's We Out Here Festival, the track has since evolved into a staple of Flo's live sets, building on the contemporary folktronic fervour for records built out of obscure sample sources. In this case, the track evolves around a field recording captured in Nairobi, his motherland. East African Ambassa Mandela from the band Sarabi resounds on vocals, while contributions from Yohan Kebede of Kokoroko on keys, Ziggy Funk on guitar, Laurie Pitt from Golden Teacher on drums, and Glasgow's Joe Howe (Ex Ben Butler & Mousepad) on saxophone follow. 'Aker The Lion God' contrasts to the A's rather grand spirit crescendo with a downbeat deep house digestif.

Adventures In Lagos

Disorganics
Silver Lining (Horace Silver RIP)
Review: "The second release for Danny Ward's (dubble d/moodymanc) Well Cut Records features an ep from "Balaphonic". A project which fuses organic live instrumentation and musicianship with deep and modal dancefloor sensibilities.
"Adventures in Lagos" is a long evolving and deep building hypnotic afro groove featuring spoken word samples of Fela Kuti and street sounds taken from 1970s Lagos.
"Three Strikes and Out" is a lush sounding deep, 119 bpm organic groove which builds into a percussion workout and has been championed of late to great effect in the sets of Osunlade.
Opening side 2, "Disorganics" is a nod toward the great Brazillian recordings of the 1960s and seventies yet keeps the tempo firmly locked for the dancefloor. Live samba percussion opens into themes built on 10 string guitar parts and a driving double bass line which build to a melodic drop based on a theme played on plucked cello! Definitely one for the heads!.
Closing the e.p. is "Silver Lining", in tribute to the late great jazz musician and musical visionary Horace Silver. Dark, ride driven, earthy house drums propel a modal grand piano and double bass riff to build the tension which evolves with an ever expanding analogue synth line, keeping energy high whilst percussion and string parts develop to augment the dynamics!

Review: The Bayara Citizens dropped the original 'Ju/Ru Music' 7" on Joe Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label back in 2006. It has become a rather pricey little 45 prm that now gets reissued as two different, dubbed out Afro rhythms with swirling guitar licks. The Afrikan Art opener on the a-side is full of sunshine and Latin vibes thanks to the superbly plucked strings and shuffling groves, while the flip is the Afrikan dub Drum Drums version - darker, more percussive more moody. Both sides bring something different to any dub set.

Review: B2 Recordings rolls out more of its quality-assured deep house here with Label head Bengoa stepping up next for a new three-tracker that comes with featured guests Kristina Berger and Brothers' Vibe. 'Idyot' kicks off with deep and pulsing synths and clacking hits that bring an early Chicago vibe next to the libidinous and erotic vocals which really tease. 'Meet Me Halfway' sinks into a super silky groove that is deep as you like and driven by stylish drum hits under a muttered vocal. 'Come On Now' then sinks into a more acid-laced atmosphere with sustained chords keeping you on edge next to loose and jumbled percussion. It's a stylistically diverse EP, this one.

Motion Anthem (6:06)
Review: New Jersey-born Ali Berger is a drum machine specialist and low-key US electronic music standby, now based in Pittsburgh after spending the 2010s in Boston and Detroit. His catalog of original music runs deep, with over 60 releases on his Trackland label and EPs on imprints like Spectral Sound and Sequencias, all resulting from a lovingly-cultivated studio approach which respects improvisation as a spiritual practice. Here with this sublime release on Scissors and Thread, Serious, Berger collects tracks "from the last three years, plus 0221 (Serious Mix) from 2018", portraying the pursuit of an art form (techno, house) that demands that one take oneself seriously, whilst also periodically calling that sense of self-seriousness into question. As stated by Berger, there is a sense of deep melancholy that runs throughout the record, whether on the watery functions of 'Tape Jam (Pt. 2)' or the sparse synth-keyed movements of 'A New World To Forget'; they seem to reflect the feeling of happily pensive dog days, of arriving at new insights that wouldn't have been discovered had one not endured them.

Fighting Spirit (7:24)
Review: Boddhi Satva's highly tribalistic strain of house music has been at the top of our minds for a while, and riding high on our digging radars. This is because the artist has managed to tell his own story and detach himself from momentary scenes or fashions. Instead, tracks like "Ngnari Konon" use the house formula only as a backing rhythm, and with the help of Africa's Oumou Sangare, Satva produces what is more of a world music piece. The same goes for "Nankoumandjan", but "Benefit" strays closer to something like UK bassline thanks to its jump-up beat and r&b-style vocals by Omar, while "Fighting Spirit" is what you would call a classic 'bass house' joint, filled with gargling low-ends and plenty of sweet tribalism. Sick.

Review: Hi-tech soul, spiritual life music or as he himself would name it 'ancestral soul' - there are a handful or artists who have cultivated this idiosyncratic style and Boddhi Satva is definitely one of them. The artist hailing from Central Africa weaves a seamless tapestry of African music styles throughout his life-affirming grooves that have been offered up on defining labels such as Vega, Yoruba Soul and BBE over the years. His next journey comes courtesy of Mad Mats & Tooli's Local Talk imprint out of Sweden. "Basic Knowledge" is a deeply mesmerising journey utilising rich melodies and delicate chord progressions for a truly soothing experience. We're particularly loving "Together" (main mix) on the flip, where he goes deeper into the exotic with an awe-inspiring vocal performance.

Bona Fide & Luka Sambe - "The Lost Orchestra" (Ambient version) (7:04)
Bona Fide - "Lepeza" (6:36)
Bona Fide - "Euphoria" (Ambient version) (8:37)
Review: In Waves is a new sub- or sister label from Lee Burridge's now well established All Day I Dream label. To be honest, stylistically, the music doesn't seem to vary too much from what you would expect on the partner imprint. It is dreamy, melancholic stuff with layers of musicality and zoned out grooves. Airy motifs, spring-day like charm and new age samples abound here on the three new tracks from Bona Fide and Luka Sambe. They are classy, elegant, orchestra, and perfect for the more mature house music lover.

Mona Ki Ngi Xica (remixes)
Cat: MBRV 014. Rel: 03 May 23
Mona Ki Ngi Xica (Pablo Fierro remix) (5:36)
Mona Ki Ngi Xica (Everything Counts remix) (7:35)
Review: The Moblack label deals in Afro house from around the world and next up is a new 12" with remixes of Bonga's 'Mona Ki Ngi Xica'. The popular organic vibes man Pablo Fierro goes first with a deep and spine-tingling remix that is layered up with strings, vocals and instrumentals that take you to an African savannah. It's musical and rich like much house music is not, then on the flip comes the Everything Counts remix. It's another deep one, this time a little more stripped back with tin pot percussion and rolling, warm bass.

Sam Irl - "Changes" (6:14)
Steve Spacek - "Do U Want My Lov" (3:30)
Feater - "Cosmic Dust" (6:19)
Abase - "Fallen Statues" (5:56)
Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

Review: Despite being amongst Chicago's first wave of house activists (he started DJing in 1981) and a near 30-year production career that includes releases on such imprints as Relief Records, Rush Hour, Djax-Up Beats and Strictly Jaz Unit, Boo Williams has never received the plaudits his impeccable track record deserves. Each new release from the long serving Chicagoan is worth a listen, and this EP on his own imprint is no exception. Blurring the boundaries between Afro-house, deep house and the tech-tinged hybrid sounds of Osunlade, Backwards Jive is a fine four-tracker all told. Our picks of a very strong bunch are sun-soaked and percussion-rich opener 'Track One' (with its autotune-heavy lead vocal), the locked in Afro-tech hypnotism of 'Space Mix', and the densely layered beats and sci-fi synth chords of 'Track 4'.
