Life In Stereo (6:12)
Rat City (6:07)
Chapel Town (5:32)
Dub The Acid (5:27)
Review: Peaky Beats is a great name for a label that serves up such irresistible house and garage jams as it has so far over its first eight EPs. This ninth outing is no less desirable, coming from the in house production team in collaboration with Breakfake. 'Life In Stereo' hits a perfect note between kinetic drums and soulful, jazzy chords deigned to melt the heart. 'Rat City' is more filthy - a warped bassline screws about beneath more sleazy broken beats. 'Chapel Town' brings low end dubstep wobble to the party and 'Dub The Acid' is another filthy dirty skanker with echoing hits and mutant bass.

Pharma - "Shift" (Causa remix) (4:12)
Review: Causa and Pharma link-up for one of Locus Sounds' rare vinyl outings and the vibes are set as high as ever. Two originals from both, each one remixing each other's tunes, Causa kicks off with 'Kreamy', an industrial weight growler that's given a dubby touch by Pharma on the rub. Meanwhile on the flip, Pharma heads in an easterly direction with the intense pressure and swagger of 'Shift' before Causa charges the groove up with a bulbous, funk-oozing bassline. Kream if you wanna go faster.

Middle Man (feat Sleepy) (3:18)
Offside (3:31)
Review: There's not a lot of info about Scott Gailey Spring's first album as Hotspring, though Mood Hut's description of it being, 'digital technology half buried in the soil', is rather good. Throughout, Gailey employs a brilliantly inventive, off-kilter mixture of tipsy, off-kilter drumbeats, distant auto-tuned vocalizations, manipulated new age music sounds, pulsing ambient chords, fluttering electronic motifs and knowing nods to future R&B. It's extremely hard to accurately describe, but both brilliantly beautiful and undeniably eccentric: the kind of album that will have you scratching your head and smiling enthusiastically at the same time. If you don't believe us, we'd suggest checking out the clips ASAP.

Enigma Dubz - "Exosphere" (4:35)
Pushloop - "Age Of Fear" (3:17)
Truth - "Show Dem" (3:57)
Khiva - "Flight Club" (3:45)
Review: Having already offered up the first part of their 50th release trilogy, the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew slams down volume two. While its predecessor focused on undeniably deep cuts, this edition is all about aural darkness. Enigma Dubz gets things going in fine style via the slow-spaced out riddims, creepy sub-bass and clandestine electroic motifs of "Exosphere", before Pushloop reaches for oddball sci-fi vocal samples, punishing wobble-bass and maniacal laughter on "Age Of Fear". Truth weighs in with the bleeping, slow-stepping haziness and bowel-bothering bass of "Show Dem", while Khiva opts for a vibrating sub-bassline, metallic hits and tons of ricocheting effects on closing cut "Flight Club".

Vessel (4:28)
Sunken (4:22)
Review: The Banshee EP was one of the last musical projects the pair of Glume and Phossa worked on together in Bristol before they left the city to live elsewhere. Lead single 'Banshee' has been played for years on the circuit and always got great reactions, so the pair sat down to write three more tunes to go with it for the sake of this EP. That was during lockdown so they haven't been road tested yet but rest assured when they are, the club will erupt. Each one hits deep, with trippy synth motifs from the Orient on 'Jitter', warrior energy on 'Vessel' and more broken beats on 'Sunken.'

Yucatan (4:00)
Apogee (3:30)
Review: Bristol buds Glume & Phossa link up once again for another superb collab collection. This time on Encrypted, it's another trippy hat trick. "Bat Country" kicks off with a sense of cosmicity that gets deeper as the track begins to open up into an awesome sample you and your dad will recognise. Gradually upping the strange as the EP develops, "Yucatan" gets all Halloweeny with its arpeggio and strange warped keys while "Apogee" flips out in a ping-pong frenzy with layers of pipes and chimes which all double up in a really interesting and surprising way. Batty... In the best possible way.

J:Kenzo - "Straight Defeat" (feat Collinjah)
Perverse - "Subcontinent"
Biome - "Solstice"
Truth - "Questions"
Review: Here is the first of two 12" samplers preceding The Compilation, a self explanatory label collection from the Artikal crew which lays down a tasty marker for what to expect when the full 14 track release drops later this month. Naturally label co-founder J Kenzo leads the way with "Straight Defeat" which features the bubbling rap flow of Collinjah, but there's plenty more to sink your teeth into. Check the swinging minimalism and bulbous kicks of Biome's "Solstice" and Truth's chop-slapping stark design on "Questions".

JFO - "Tell Dem" (4:12)
Filthy Gears - "Filthy Sax" (5:06)
Review: Prime instrumental grime from the mysterious and fledgling Dream Eater crew. Once again it's a broadsword swathe across the beat spectrum. JT goes Oriental with his staccato "Blizzard" while Sir Hiss looks to LA for inspiration with his string sweeping "Casablanca", Dr Hugo bakes up a devilish sine wobble on "Nightfall", Polonis's "N" takes us right back to 2002 with its militant snare hits and fat cold bass riff while Southpoint affiliate JFO sharpens up a crucial two-step on "Tell Dem". Finally Filthy Gears gets tasty with a classic horn sample on "Filthy Sax." So on point they're edible, it's time to chow down.

Review: From cor blimey to core nuclear reactor; Mean Streets continue their Trilogy collection with a second volume of gully comprising two more vibes from the left side. Donnie Kromestar starts the skirmish with his devastating heavyweight bash-about 'Dancehall' while P Jam & Dok flip the experience in the B with 'Funky Nandos'. A springy slice of broken beat with jazzy shimmers and cheery organs, it takes you back to Plastic People even if you didn't get to go there back in the day. Street talk.

Orson - "Last Chance" (5:09)
Phrex - "Colliding Clouds" (5:09)
Review: There seems to be a bit of a narrative here on Phrex's second Dubtopia release. Previously, Version bossman Orson had given us "Life Gamble". Now he's on his "Last Chance", and it's every bit as foreboding as you'd expect the final roll of the dice to be - menacing, pensive and lined with venomous acid. Bern's Phrex is experiencing a similar situation; while he previously told us about "Vectors In The Sky", he's now warning us of "Colliding Clouds" to the tune of quivering, tightly weaved top lines, trippy dub echoes and loose soft drums underpinned by a voluptuous rolling sub groove.

Animus (4:59)
Review: Callum "Paleman" Lee is one of Swamp 81's most decorated artists, having released a string of well-regarded 12" singles for the hyped, bass-obsessed imprint. Yrs Ago is his third EP for the label's 81 offshoot, and sees him joining the dots between techno, post-dubstep bass music, and angular electronica. The title track sets the tone, with robotic voices, creepy electronics and smooth sub-bass riding a metallic, broken techno groove. Flipside "Animus" is a marginally more melodic affair, with spacey chords and bubbling arpeggio lines riding a punchy electro rhythm. Both tracks are naturally rather heavy, and undoubtedly amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

Review: Foamplate's imprint Plantpower hits release number nine and hands it over to Panix, who mixes up deep dubstep and fresh 2-step across four crucial cuts. 'Rudeboy Edit' pair plenty of naughty low end madness with grime lyrics and glitchy beats. The fantastic 'G Shuffle' is a scruffy and scuffed up brew of bristling drum works, snapping snares and wonky bass. 'Mobbed' slips into a menacing and late night low end oscillation that will bring the terror to any floor and last of all, 'Sensimilla' offers another mad LFO, this time with shamanic and tribal sounding toms peppering the groove.

Wildcat (5:09)
Review: The Vivid label is yet another one from Burnski who also runs Constant Blanc and Instinct. He is s single handed garage hit making machine and he knows how to tap into the next gen, too. Here he calls upon Peaky Beats for a naughty and nasty three track affair that has retro feels but contemporary style. 'Can't Stop' opens up with a 2-step shuffle and steely hits, then 'Get Ready' gets more free and melodic with some boxing little melodic patterns and oscillating bass. Last of all is the most menacing and dark - 'Wildcat' flips into a dub wise swagger mid-way through that is going to blow up the clubs.

Socks Off
Review: With his 12" for Swamp81 and single for Ten Thousand Yen providing some of the best bass releases of the year, Mickey Pearce's return to Loefah's label is something of a cause for excitement at Juno HQ. The fantastic artwork - which we're guessing explicitly references the classic Face magazine covers of the 90s - is worth the price alone, but thankfully the tracks are just as good; "Numb Nut (Soft Brain)" is a kicking fusion of minimal afro rhythms, abstract vocals and reverb-heavy tones held together with an indistinct bass glue, while "Socks Off" offers a similarly brilliant take on the grime-inspired formula, combining sinister strings and threatening vocals with heavy toms and malfunctioning handclaps. We're promised an album from the producer next year - on the strength of these tracks it should be something to look forward to.

Underdog
Piston
Review: This was Pearson Sound's long-awaited return to Hessle Audio this year, and his first material for the label since his contribution to last year's 116 & Rising compilation. Although his recent self released missive "Untitled" proved a welcome distraction it's clear that this release marks the next stage in whichever the producer may be heading. Eschewing the housier tones of the past few years of productions, Kennedy takes things back to basics, exploring the stripped back sounds of early instrumental grime. "Clutch" is as mechanical as its name suggests, combining thumping kicks and sharp-focus percussion with a sensibility not a million miles away from A Made Up Sound's right-angled techno. On the flip, "Underdog" is a cavernous stop-start DJ tool filled with glassy textures and high-voltage bass, while "Piston" is a schizophrenic battery of stuttering snares and contrasting melodic textures that have been frankly difficult to wrap your head around!

Which Way Is Up (5:50)
Review: Pearson Sound's latest EP, 'Which Way Is Up', marks his eagerly awaited return to Hessle Audio, the label he helped establish as a bastion of genre-defying bass music. This four-track exploration reaffirms his reputation as a master of the sound system with a keen ear for innovative rhythms and textures. The EP opens with the previously released track 'Hornet,' which has already been buzzing in clubs since June. Its brooding, sub-heavy lines and intricate drum patterns set a high bar, but Pearson Sound keeps the momentum with 'Twister,' a fresh addition that swirls with a dizzying array of tempo shifts and basslines. The track embodies the producer's knack for blending the visceral with the cerebral, creating a sonic landscape that's both immersive and disorienting. What's compelling about this release is Pearson Sound's ability to balance familiar Hessle Audio aesthetics with fresh ideas. Each track is crafted to test and excite, from the cavernous lows to the meticulous highs. This EP is not just a continuation of his previous work but an evolution that maintains his position at the forefront of the bass music scene. With Which Way Is Up, Pearson Sound proves once again that his approach to production is as dynamic and forward-thinking as ever, affirming why he remains a pivotal figure in the electronic music landscape.

Review: Perez reveals his shadowy 140 underbelly and once again knocks our heads clear off. Tapping back into that classic late 2000s deep space droney immersion vibe, each cut wounds with signature 1985 heaviness. "Last Rites" is all prang and high voltage bass fangs, "Deep Six" plunges us deep into the sub abyss, "Spooked" takes us for a slo-mo skank in the cemetery before "Melodrama" subverts dubstep's UKG influences in suitably swampy style. Rite on.

"Ravana" is all about the slow motion chainsaw harmonics, "Lifeline" is just raw subby hench stenchism, "Post-Mortem" stings with much more of a trippier, waspy edge before "Ends" finishes the business with a series of subverted rave and techno elements with Headland. Review: Codex is a brand new various artists series from 1985 Music. The opening four tracker features esteemed label boss Alix Perez alongside crucial bass craftsmen Hijinx, Epoch and Ebb. It is Perez himself who opens the proceedings with earth shattering bass quakes and drilling synths on 'VTRN' before Hijinx explores a wide open and cavernous underground space detailed with ticking hits and warped synth reverberations. If you've followed their unfettered support for authentic dubstep, you'll already know how much of a big deal this is. Kicking off with New Zealand duo Perverse, both sides rumble with class; "IO" is laced with trippy percussive ricochets and a stately amphibious warble while "Aye Aye" is a sludgier, unhurried pensive construction full of dark drama. From the packaging to the sounds; you know Infernal have spent a long time planning this label debut... And they're likely to have spent even longer planning the oncoming release-assault.

Review: There's something to be said for a simple, nagging two-note riff. Stabby and infectious: cooked well and it's the perfect recipe for dancefloor mind magic. Take "Tesla", a simplistic, twisted pacer that penetrates the psyche with its liquid rhythm and relentless hook. "Timelapse", meanwhile, shows a whole other side to Perverse as we dive and glide on cosmic thermals, hanging onto loose guitar twangs and airy pads.

Review: We're not sure what New Zealand duo Perverse has been eating for breakfast, but their latest material is definitely harder than the original dungeon-bound sonics they first made a name for themselves with. With nuances of Thelem and Killawatt - while sounding wholly their own - there's a distinct loopy, almost techno-like vibe to each of these three cuts... "Champion Dub" is authentic roots material, all spacey and loaded with crystalline drum dynamics, "Invasion", meanwhile is an ugly, bass-busted peaktime jam that's coded with serious funk attitude while "Methot VI" teases with fractured stabs and a fantastically processed vocal loop. Trippy and tasty, don't sleep on this one!

Perverse & Gantz - "Seismic"
Review: The Boka label reaches release no. 43 with some pure bassweight from New Zealand duo Perverse. Their arrival on Boka comes after successful transmissions for Innamind and J:Kenzo's Artikal Music and they feel perfectly at home. Lead cut "Tribute" has been high on the request lines ever since V.I.V.EK. dropped it on his Rinse FM show some eight months ago - no longer a dubplate weapon, it still rolls with the same sort of sparse, tribal menace. On the flip Brett and Alex Perverse team up with Gantz for "Seismic" which is rather appropriate given the sub explosions but it's the attention to the drum detail that will really impress on this slow building production.

Review: Bristol bass fusionist Peverelist looks back a decade to the heady hurly burly of 140 music in 2008 and his intrinsic role within its development. "Bluez" remains as timeless and breezy as it ever did. Lightly touched and clearly inspired by the Goodlooking chapters of jungle, it's now been remastered to stand up against today's productions. Meanwhile on the B we have the long lost dub "Und_92". A much dubbier technoid piece that, in hindsight, was a key stepping stone en route to his respected position in techno today. Ageless.

Review: It's a brave person that agrees to remix a classic, and they are even braver when they turn in two so step forward Kowton who has delivered a pair of signature refixes of the 2007 Pev favourite "Roll With The Punches". Aimed as a bruising marker for the upcoming Punch Drunk compilation Worth The Weight Vol. 2: From The Edge, both remixes here hit the spot with precision force, retaining Pev's fluttering refrain but aligning it to some signature Kowton rhythmic programming. The latter dub version is exclusive to this 12" whilst the forthcoming compilation looks to be a worthy successor to 2010's edition, drawing on a crack squad of Punch Drunk affiliates including Young Echo crew, Ekoplekz, Bass Clef and talented Bristol upstarts like Hodge and Andy Mac.
