Temple Duel
Temple Duel (limited 10")
Cat: KHALIPHONIC 13. Rel: 18 Nov 19
  1. Temple Duel (5:06)
  2. Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Loos In Twos
Cat: HES 038. Rel: 03 Sep 20
  1. Loos In Twos (NRG) (5:25)
  2. Gary Mission (5:03)
  3. Stepper (3:32)
Review: Watch your bass bins, cause ANZ is here to test them out with this blistering new bass drop on Hessle Audio. Continuing in the fine tradition of the UK hardcore continuum, Manchester-based producer ANZ's tracks here all chew up and spit out elements of rave, hardcore, jungle and breaks. "Loos In Twos (NRG)" is the big opening salvo, with rave sirens and tight as you like kick drums. "Gary Mission" then stacks up the jittery drum rhythms and runs through them with tripped out synths that percolate over and over. "Stepper" is just that, with heathy vocal sounds peppering a tough riddim.

The Woods
The Woods (12")
Cat: HOLDITDOWN 002. Rel: 16 Jun 20
  1. The Woods (5:07)
  2. Stumble (4:40)
Review: And the winner of the best rhetorical question of the day goes to Are You Gunna Hold It Down? Blatantly we are when the sounds are this heavy. 002 for the label now, once again it's very cheeky white label business, fully anonymous in the credit department and the vibes are set extremely high. "The Woods" is an oil pneumatic machine, the likes of which you'd expect to hear on Osiris while "Stumble" hits on two sides; the ghostly graveyard overtones and that flabby old bassline undertone. Think Distance and you're in the right sonic ballpark.

Dubs Galore 007
Cat: DOR 007. Rel: 16 Oct 20
  1. Mr K & Von D - "Dem Tuff" (4:46)
  2. Arta & Von D - "Let Down" (5:34)
Review: For Dubs Galore's 007 release they leave us shaken and stirred as label boss Von D goes toe-to-toe with two close compadres Mr K and Arta for two 10" system bubblers. 'Dem Tuff' lights the fire with bulbous kicks, wafting flutes and snake-like percussion as K and D lock in for a 2am heads down stamper. 'Let Down' takes us further into the night as Arta and Von strip the elements right back into something more authentically dub. Dreamy pads, rolling hang drums and a series of strange bass tones underneath. Sometimes the old ways are the best...

Ishtar
Ishtar (LP)
Cat: DDDLP 4. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. We Nuh Pay (feat Killa P, long Range & Crowell) (3:25)
  2. Ishtar (2:46)
  3. Behind Closed Eyes (3:21)
  4. Lunatic (feat D Double E) (4:12)
  5. Nightmares (4:20)
Review: Tyler Myroon AKA Abstrakt Sonance has released some of his most potent music since joining Truth's Deep, Dark and Dangerous label, so hopes are naturally high for this first missive for the imprint in two years. Title track 'Ishtar' is particularly potent, with the self-proclaimed "bass music force" wrapping clandestine chords and creepy melodies around punishing dubstep drums and gargantuan sub-bass. The EP's other instrumental cuts, 'Behind Closed Eyes' and 'Nightmares', offer deeper and hazier variations on a similarly bold and aggressive theme, while the two vocal cuts - and in particular opener 'We Nuh Pay', where Killa P, Long Range and Crowell trade verses - sound like future party-starting classics.
