Floyd James & The GTs - "Work That Thang" (2:50)
Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Fried Fish ’n’ Collard Greens" (2:40)
The Native Yinzer - "The Hip Strip" (2:33)
Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

The Tropical EP (double 7" limited to 300 copies)

Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

The Natural Band - "There Was A Time" (3:46)
Review: This 7" reissue of 'I'm So Proud' by Aswad and The Natural Band's 'There Was A Time' delivers a funk-filled gem originally released in 1972. Aswad's 'I'm So Proud' leads with a soulful blend of funk and soul, anchored by a strong vocal performance and tight rhythm section. On the flip, The Natural Band's 'There Was A Time' is a dynamic instrumental jam that showcases tight grooves and infectious rhythms, making it an essential track for any funk enthusiast. Previously fetching high prices on the second-hand market, this reissue is a great opportunity to experience these classic tracks without breaking the bank.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (vocal)

Review: Roy Ayers at his most transcendent. 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' is more than a summertime anthemiit's a spiritual moodboard that's shaped jazz-funk, soul, r&b and hip-hop for nearly 50 years. Ayers, born in Los Angeles and raised in its fertile fusion scene, places the vibraphone at the music's heart, coaxing heat-haze tones from sparse chords, synths, and that honeyed chorus. Flip it over and the instrumental version unlocks a deeper layer: stripped of vocals, it becomes a pure groove, drifting and hypnotic. What lingers is the balanceibetween melancholy and bliss, rhythm and release. A rare track that feels entirely unhurried yet quietly radical, now preserved in a limited pressing that looks as golden as it sounds.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (vocal)
Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental)
Review: This orange 7" is a miniature monument to one of soul's most quietly influential figures. Roy AyersiLos Angeles-born, jazz-schooled, funk-mindedicrafted 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' not to dazzle but to dissolve. It moves with a drowsy clarity: shimmering synth, near-whispered vocals, and a lazily tumbling bassline that never quite lands. Released during a golden run of Ayers' mid-70s material, the track has since become shorthand for warm-weather introspection, equal parts ease and ache. The instrumental version on the reverse keeps the spirit intact, offering a meditative glide through the same terrain. Limited to 300 copies, this orange pressing pairs a low-lit groove with a deepening sense of legacyiAyers' influence isn't just heard, it's felt in the space he leaves behind.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (vocal)
Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental)
Review: Few recordings capture the easy intensity of a summer afternoon like 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine'. Released in 1976 and wrapped in slow-drifting synths and soft falsettos, the track became a touchstone not just for Roy Ayers, but for 70s soul and beyond. Born in Los Angeles, Ayers helped define the jazz-funk crossover, placing the vibraphone at the centre of a sound both hazy and sharply detailed. The original vocal take on the A-side still melts under its own warmth; the instrumental on the flip uncovers the careful architecture beneath. Issued here on 7" black wax following Ayers' recent passing, this reissue feels like both a keepsake and a quiet honouring of an artist who shaped a whole way of listening.

Review: 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' represents a pivotal moment for Roy Ayers and Ubiquity, marking a departure towards a funkier and more laid-back sound in 1976. With its languid tempo and dreamy atmosphere, captures the essence of summer with its joyful lyrics and hypnotic groove. Ayers' vibraphone melodies intertwine seamlessly with the band's instrumentation, creating a mesmerizing sonic landscape that resonates with listeners. Review: 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' represented a pivotal moment for Roy Ayers and Ubiquity as it marked a shift towards a funkier, more relaxed sound in 1976. It is one of his best-loved tunes as a result and always comes out when the weather warms up. That means it also often gets reissued, as it does here, as the track captures the essence of summer through joyful lyrics and a hypnotic groove. Ayers' vibraphone melodies intertwine seamlessly with the band's instrumentation while on the flip us an instrumental that offers a slightly different vibe. It all comes on nice yellow marbled vinyl.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

Review: The third volume of this series delivers an irresistible blend of funk and 60s-inspired grooves. Side-1 kicks off with a surf-rock-infused funk jam packed with energy and retro vibes. Following that, a swinging 60s sound that combining catchy rhythms and pop sensibilities keeps the momentum going. Side-2 shifts gears a groove-heavy track led by a soulful organ that oozes vintage charm. Review: This one got a special Japanese Edition reissue in Spring last year but is such an in-demand delight that now comes other pressing. It finds Betty Black serving up her own sublime cover of Eurythmics' mega hit 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. She is a modern-day soul diva who used to vocalise UK garage tunes and now shows another side to her bow. She is backed up by The Family Fortune and adds plenty of 60s sass to the original which as well as including the full vocal version on the A-side, also has a more dubbed-out edit on the B-side.

The Black Dove - "I'm Telling" (4:27)
Tony From The Bronx - "Esperanza" (3:21)
Review: The Mango Hill sub-label Double Aside Records brings together pan-American talents The Black Dove from Miami, Florida, and Tony From The Bronx, New York, on this raw 45rpm single. There are strong James Brown vibes on this one with The Black Dove' 'I'm Telling' being a deep cut, soul infused roller. The drums are scintillating, the organ stabs bring a churchy feel and the yelling vocals are pure fire. On the flip is a big 60s swinger from Tony From The Bronx. 'Esperanza' hints at the bygone boogaloo era with a classic vocal refrain of love me, love me not. Great stuff.

They take care of the a-side of this red hot release from Funk Night with 'Flowman Break', a bubbling, loose limbed funk bumper that is full flavour and full of playful funk. Boca 45 & The Bryan Munich All Stars - "Hot Wheels The Chase" (2:53)
Review: For the latest coloured vinyl missive on his 2020 Donuts label, veteran DJ/producer Scott Hendy AKA Boca 45 has enlisted the help of some of his many music industry mates. Kelvin Swaby, lead singer of The Heavy, lends his voice to A-side "It's All There", a low-slung chunk of flash-fried funk-rock rich in Prince-style guitar licks, jaunty bass and loose-limbed drum breaks. Over on side B, the Bristolian crate digger is joined by The Bryan Munich Allstars - an outfit whose members include Beak and Portishead man Geoff Barrow - for a fiery cover of Badder Than Evil's much-sampled 1973 funk bomb "Hot Wheels". Boca 45's new version rocks hard, with the ensemble cast laying down a scintillating funk-rock revision that will delight all those who loves the '73 original.

Jorun Bombay - "Mister Magic" (A Jorun Bombay edit - alternate version) (3:19)
Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

Review: You'd expect a collaboration between Columbia-based fusionist Bosq, Ibibio Sound System's horn section and vocalist Kaleta to be pretty darn good, and 'Song For Ehi' most certainly is. Inspired by a combination of classic Edo-funk, Afro-disco and reggae disco, the A-side original version delivers a near perfect mix of timbales-sporting dub disco grooves, reverb-laden lead vocals, Afro-funk guitar licks, Afrobeat-esque organ licks and punchy horns. The track's inherent dubbiness is further explored on the flipside revision, which adds extra layers of percussion and the kind of breathless dancefloor weight that marks out the greatest dub disco workouts. In a word: essential!

Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

Review: Mountain Records are a new funk label, pushing 45's cut with new funk tinged with a modern production sheen. Two label mainstays decorate each side of this one: for the A, Double A asks 'You Feel Alright?' We certainly do, not least thanks to the artist's heavy locking down of sampled big boom drums, funky grooves and evil laughter. The Gaff meanwhile offers up a breakbeat banger to the altar, letting up on bass for a weird, flauting finish. 7"s collectors, watch out.

Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Review: From the aquatically-focused Pirahna & The Posse Productions crew, the Octoposse label has a simple premise, to give you bang tidy rub downs of crucial funk cuts. No nonsense, just a razor sharp instinct for razor and tape in pursuit of the good groove. They kicked off some four years ago with edits of Dexter Wansel and Pleasure, and now they're going in on a smoking hot 7" featuring one of the greatest cuts The Fatback Band ever committed to tape. '(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop' is widely considered one of the best in all of funkdom, and for good reason. As well as a funked up remix on the A-side, you get a smouldering instrumental ride out on the flip, all the better to get those bodies locked in rhythm.

Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra are an entirely unique phenomenon, a Japanese collective pushing forward Neo-Afrobeat with heavy influence of the classic Japanese jazz sound and the long tradition of covering iconic western soul/funk tracks. Aretha Franklin's 'Rock Steady' is a collaboration with fellow Japanese artist Tina (aka Luv Tina), a decorated vocal powerhouse in the early 2000s R&B landscape, culminating in a mind-boggling genre mashup that defies expectations. The J.A.A. chorus section matches Tina's power perfectly with the blaring jazz instrumental, with phenomenal sax and trumpets. Swipe this coloured reissue before it goes again, you have to hear it to feel it.

The Cowbell Brothers - "Style Like Mine" (3:51)
Review: Super limited, super handy 7" this one from US label The Influence which combines funk, breaks, house, hip hop and soul. The Jazz Souls kick off with some unabashed use of James Brown samples on 'Get With It.' Eventually, it becomes a rolling and funky hip hop number with florid melodies. On the flip side, The Cowbell Brothers 'Style Like Mine' has dirty bass riffs, tin-pot percussion and big breaks topped off with steamy female vocals. Great tools to liven up the club.

The Red Stripe Band - "Try Love" (4:22)
Review: The esteemed Kalinda label serves up this glorious two-track soul and jazz release featuring Mavis John and The Red Stripe Band and we are here for it. It's a warming and funky rhythm overload with organic percussion and backed by lush chords as the Mavis vocal teases, pleases and seduces. On the flip side The Red Stripe Band fire up the dance floor with a more driving and strident rhythm section and bigger vocal bursts that will get you in a spin. Add in some exuberant song stabs and cosmic synth sounds and you have an ageless wonder.

Review: New York City was the early block city foment of The Fatback Band, who would, on the official account, see their names written into history as some of the pioneers of funk at large. Aside from their disputed four-to-the-floor point-sourcings with 'Oops Upside Your Head', The Fatback Band were equally known for many a hit, including 'I Like Girls' and 'Yum Yum (Gimme Some)', and the formula for such repeated successes has been expertly localised by some as resting in the charismatic wiles of one Johnny King, the founding member whose proud, biped posture and wicked vocals brought to the group a firm and charismatic leading presence to the group. This originally 2004 cut by working Master Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez hears us lean into the funkier ends of the latter's remix-craft, as 'Peace, Love Not War' is given a profound kneading and planing across an excoriating final funk beat.
