Review: Dillatroit is the eagerly awaited 12 track vinyl only release of unreleased Dilla material - arriving courtesy of Moodymann's Mahogani label and Dilla's family foundations some six years after the legendary producer's premature demise at the age of 32. Anyone reading this should be fully aware of Dilla's legacy on hiphop and beyond so there's no need to set the scene with any biographical background. Dillatroit features rappers, DJs, singers and musicians from the Motor City (Andres is rumoured to be involved somewhere) across the 12 hip hop orientated tracks. It runs the gamut of the Dilla style palette, with dusty head nodders (''Birthright'' and ''Ride With It'') next to sweetly soulful jams '('Let's Pray Together'' & ''Detroit Madness'') and jazzier instro cuts like "Mind Yo Business" propped up against rowdy posse cuts such as "Say My Name. " A worthy posthumous addition to the Dilla canon!

Review: Here's an intriguing remix choice by Pepe Bradock, Coda Deep and Ame: 'Big Booty Express' channels hot-footed twerkage into scratchy yet weighty house beats, over the course of four exclusive mixes on 12". The original beat, which also appears here, was a solid and rather crude piece of space-age lo-fi, filled with Dilla-ey noise wreckage. It was the only Dilla beat to ever come about as a tribute to Detroit techno. And for that, the three remixes lend completely new ideas to the original, tooting and farting into a nice n' raw ether.

Review: In a rare backwards castling and killer checkmate, Friendly Records boldly re-press one of J Dilla's most beloved cuts, 'Geek Down', which appeared on his landmark Donuts LP. Known for its sample of the 2001 dark funk tune 'Charlies Theme' by The Jimi Entley Sound, this indelible, ringed hors d'oeuvre was essential for the critics' collective assessment that the 2005 LP was his magnum opus. Trailing pink sprinkles behind it, 'Geek Down' made Dilla's name. Sadly, the title would seem predict the artist's death just three days after the record's release. Dilla was a true productive geekazoid, and it shows in this track, with its untameable, above-the-law Western guitar wahs and tense, lilting strings keeping the goosebump hairs stood aright. The originally sampled track appears on the B, still only part-revealing the magic trick.

Review: J. Rawls is something of a super producer who has worked with many legends of the game such as The Beastie Boys and Talib Kweli. After his sold-out 2022 album, JazzHop, he follows it up with a couple of the many superb collabs he has done over the years. 'I Believe' is a steamy and low-slung house tune with warming bass and buttery vocal coos power by crispy boom bap. As the title suggests, 'Brazil' is a summery sound that takes you to Latin America with paddy kicks, wooden percussion and big horns that all get the good vibes flowing.

Review: A full quarter of a century ago now, Rawls made musical magic with the legends that are Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli, hip hop dons in their own right but also known collectively as Black Star. That was on the top tune 'Brown Skin Lady' and now 25 years on Rawls has gone back to revisit the original session sounds. He has sampled them and given them a fresh breath of air as well as reworking the beats, this time very much for the dance floor, and with plenty of Brazilian flavour. On the flip, you also get a flame-hot instrumental 'Braziliiance Bonus Beats'.

Across just two tunes, SCM brings you 14 flips of possibly the most sampled song in hip hop. Review: Bob James continues to innovate and remain revealing decades after first serving new standards in jazz funk. His latest album is another one that will connect with fans from across the ages not least because it features a rather prominent collaboration with the legendary hip-hop turntablist and producer DJ Jazzy Jeff who is best known for his partnership with Will Smith both in music and the hit US TV sitcom the Fresh Prince of Bell Air. Here Bob and Jazzy join up for 'That Bop' which is a thumping dance cut with big pano hooks that comes all those years after Jeff first samples James in something of a lovely full circle moment.

Review: It's been a while since US rapper Jay Electronica has done anything for Top Dawg Entertainment. Since his freeing himself from them, he's seen something of a resurgence, and not to mention some popular nostalgia for his earliest stuff. Now releasing with the Nas-adjacent label Mass Appeal, the two new singes 'Exhibit A' and 'Exhibit C' were originally released as separate CDs in 2009. Both tracks hear Jay reflect on his experience as a black cultural voice from an ironically legal perspective, donning the persona of a suspect representing himself in court, 'testifying', all while making a laughing stock of the court itself.

Review: On this rather tidy 7" single, Canadian beat-makers Flipout and Jay-Swing offer up fresh reworks of two tracks from Jay-Z's acclaimed 2007 set American Gangster. This though is "classic gangster", with the pair combining vocals from Jay-Z and his guest rappers with beats, loops and musical elements more associated with Golden Era hip-hop classics. For example, their Tribe Called Quest Edit of 'Sweet' cleverly combines Jay-Z's raps from that much-loved track with the distinctive groove of 'Can I Kick It'. It's the same story on the flip, where the Vancouver-based pair's treatment of 'Success', featuring verses from Nasy Nas, bites an aggressive, funk-fuelled D-Nice cut from the late 1980s.

Review: This limited-edition EP gathers together some serious heat from the bulging back catalogue of veteran Brooklyn MC Jeru The Damaja, a rapper who has been busting out flows since the early '90s. The A-side is all about 1999's '99.9 Percent', a classic chunk of conscious, laidback NYC hip-hop that remains one of the mic man's greatest musical moments. Here you get both the original vocal and instrumental takes, with the latter offering a chance to bathe in the MC's own superb beat. Turn to the flip for the even more laidback and hazy 'How III' - seemingly an alternate take on a track from the same period as '99.9 Percent' - and the faintly foreboding boom-bap goodness of 2003's 'True Skillz', a lesson on rap etiquette aimed at wannabe-MCs.
