Review: Italo-Disco, (at times abbreviated as Italo) is a music genre which originated in Italy and was mainly produced from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. The origin strongly tied to marketing efforts of the ZYX record label, which began licensing and marketing the music outside Italy in 1982. The genre faded in the early 1990s.

Italo disco evolved from the then-current dance music (including hi-NRG) and developed into a diverse genre. The genre employs drum machines, synthesizers, occasionally vocoders and usually sung in English.

This compilation contains some of the long lost tracks of the genre restored for the first time on CD. Vivien Vee "Remember" and Capricorn "I Need Love," are early work by Italian pioneer Claudio Simonetti (Goblin). All tracks digitally remastered along with its booklet, the original artwork and the original recording and extended versions.

Review: New York's Billy Woods is not just a rapper but a confronter of disavowed, barbaric truths, where the sordid, postcolonial gluts of American oligarchy are refracted through an excoriating, critical and surreal lens. The prognosis has always been dire: Woods' lyrics - whether on his debut History Will Absolve Me (2012) or the more recent Haram (2021) - are prophecies against the sputtering machine-regime of racial enmity, where the Other is misconceived an essential cog in societal works. Golliwog ramps up the bad trip factor, suggesting an eerie mix of negritude and irresolution, with a supporting cast of musicians ensuring a wonky production prowess: Kenny Segal, Conductor Wiliams and LA jazzists Human Error Club. Frantz Fanon is proclaimed a zombie, as licentious lyrics run amok on 'Misery'.

Review: Mystery-heavy UK leftfield soul outfit Sault's 12th album feels like a deeply personal offering wrapped in some of the most radiant production of their career. With Inflo behind the boards, the album moves fluidly between soulful reflection and uplifting groove. Opener 'The Healing' speaks to emotional growth, inner peace and shared vulnerability. The message is clear: healing is a journey best taken together. Tracks like 'Power' and 'Know That You Will Survive' are driven by rich, pulsing basslines and lush instrumentation. They groove with purpose, rooted in funk and soul while sounding unmistakably present-day. Cleo's voice carries a calm authority, especially on 'Know That You Will Survive'. a song that delivers hard truths with grace and warmth. 'Look Up' springs to life with Pino Palladino's bass anchoring the song's ghostly harmonies. Tracks such as 'Higher Than the Rain' and 'Real Love' layer gently but build with quiet force. The subtlety makes them all the more gripping. But 'Sorry It's Too Late' lingers the longest. A simple piano line and Cleo's bare, aching voice create a stillness that's hard to shake. Through sorrow, hope and light, 10 is a graceful reminder that there's strength in softness.

Review: A collaboration rooted in intuition, Clay finds UK experimentalist Matthew Herbert and South London drummer-vocalist Momoko Gill stepping into strange, emotionally vivid territory, stretching the song form into new shapes on their first full-length collaborationi a record that's as textural as it is emotional. Built from improvised sessions and strange source materialiJapanese kotos, basketballs, domestic clatterithe music feels both homespun and futuristic. 'Calm Water' opens with uncanny stillness before 'Need To Run' and 'Mowing' introduce a kind of fractured longing. Gill's voice dances above the dust-clouded rhythms of 'More And More' and 'Heart', sometimes like a jazz phrasing exercise, other times like something closer to prayer. Even the more dancefloor-leaning momentsi'Babystar', 'Show Me', 'Someone Like You'iremain intimate, the spaces between notes stretching wide. On 'Animals' and 'Circle Shore', they seem to hover in slow-motion, guided by instinct and restraint. It's a record with no interest in genre boundaries, powered by instinct and a quiet refusal to settle.

Review: Originally issued in skeletal form as a CD-R in 2004 and completed posthumously by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde in 2006, this reissue captures Coil's final studio-era transformation i leaner, sharper and pulled into strange rhythmic shapes by live performance energy and Ableton-era experimentation. The Weston-super-Mare collective, once studio-bound, now wrangle blown-out beats, sampled horns and hurdy-gurdy into ceremonial, fractured pop. 'The Gimp (Sometimes)' and 'Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)' hum with unstable joy; 'Sex With Sun Ra (Part One - Saturnalia)' becomes a dense, writhing invocation; its sequel folds in eerie pipe drones and Christopherson's heavy edits. The 'Wraiths and Strays' pair trace the evolution from rehearsal to stage, adding field recordings, live vocals and modular sprawl. Even their lullaby cover, 'All the Pretty Little Horses', feels raw and revelatory. This is Coil at their most vulnerable and direct, embracing rhythm and song form without compromising strangeness i a defiant, dreamlike document of a band pushing forward even as time ran out.

Review: The Cure's live albums has always been a generous collection, and perhaps it pinnacled with the ruinous film shot in the depths of southern France, Live In Orange. But this double-disc set of live radio recordings from 2005 and 2008, capturing the band in two late-period phases, hears them in a rawer, prenatal stage. Though often folded into goth rock, the band has always hovered just outside the lines, blending post-punk moodiness with pop precision and sonic excess. In the dusty wake of their most recent album, Songs Of A Lost World, these sessions pull from across their catalogue, from the shimmer of 'Plainsong' and 'Just Like Heaven' to the frayed aggression of 'Shake Dog Shake', 'Disintegration' and 'Us Or Them', all still burning with drama.

Review: Now reissued, the 1993 debut from this Weatherall-helmed outfit remains a vital artifact of early 90s UK electronic music. A distinct fusion of ambient techno, dub and melodic minimalism that helped define the era's genre-blurring sound, tracks like 'Smokebelch II' have a haunting beauty with sweeping pads and hypnotic grooves, embodying a deeply atmospheric and spacey aesthetic that nods to Berlin School influences while anchoring itself firmly in post-rave Britain. There's an elegance in its restraint, with Weatherall and company favouring mood and repetition over dramatic builds. The dubby undercurrents and minimal progressions have a depth that rewards patience. Sabresonic stands as a cohesive and influential record of UK electronic music in 1993. It reflects a moment when electronic music was still wide open and exploratory, paving the way for the deeper strains of ambient techno and downtempo to come.

Review: From Tanworth-in-Arden to Wimpole Street and the Sound Techniques studio, Nick Drake's journey to his debut full-length is laid bare in this meticulous, four-disc archival set, authorised by the Drake Estate and mastered by original engineer John Wood. Originally released on Island Records in 1969, the album's making is told across more than 30 previously unheard outtakes, Cambridge demos and alternate takesitracing the evolution of songs like 'Day Is Done', 'Saturday Sun' and the devastating 'River Man' from fragile sketches to finished elegies. Disc one's "Beverley Martyn demo" reveals a more tentative, companionable Drake, while the Cambridge reel captures a private world of haunting, early ideas ('Made to Love Magic', 'My Love Left With The Rain'). The studio takes on disc three show a singer still searching, his signature phrasing emerging through repetition and rejection. A sixty-page book, pressed on textured stock and written by Neil Storey and Richard Morton-Jack, completes the reissue. A landmark document of a quiet revolutionary who shaped modern songwriting through understatement, nuance and myth.

Review: Evergreen selector Gilles Peterson's long-running connection with Chicago's International Anthem is given a proper retrospective on this cracking compilation. Pulling from a decade of releases and handpicked via his BBC 6 Music and Worldwide FM broadcasts, the compilation echoes Peterson's curatorial instinct while celebrating the label's fiercely independent, genre-blurring spirit. Spiritual jazz, beat science, spoken word and ambient textures are all woven together with an effortless flow. An unreleased live cut from Worldwide FM adds a little intrigue, grounding the release in the global community Peterson has done much to champion. As part of the label's 'IA11' series, it's a nod to where International Anthem has come from and a signpost of what's still to come. Another reminder that man like Gilles is still listening closer than most.

Review: Genesis' double concept album from 1974 is a seraphic work, telling the surreal, mythic story of Rael, a Puerto Rican youth navigating a dreamlike New York City filled with bizarre characters and symbolism. Also Peter Gabriel's last album with Genesis, it marks the moment that the 'Solsbury Hill' singer left to pursue a solo career, thus curtailing the era of "progressive Genesis". Hailed as one of the most influential prog rock albums of all time, it exalts Genesis as early users of ambient, synth-driven moodscapes, which serve as transcendent backdrops for Rael's "ashy to classy" bildungsroman. As a Puerto Rican street kid embarks on an odyssey of personage, the album reaches a staunch climax in an archetypal castration scene. Also doubling as a live show in which Peter Gabriel donned grotesque costumes and leathery hides to represent Rael - not quite Broadway, but close - this new set comes complete with a 1975 tour programme reproduction, replica ticket, poster and a 60-page coffee table style book featuring rare images and new liner notes by Alexis Petridis.

Review: Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel III concludes a five-year journey by unrelenting ambient don zake and 36 as they once again cook up ambient soundscapes with real emotional depth. Inspired by a fan who said, "I was terrified of space travel, until I heard this album," the series explores the tension between isolation and wonder and this third volume shifts from drifting to arrival, where melancholic piano and deep synths mirror descent, landing and the quiet awe of beginning anew. With tracks like 'Final Approach' and 'Blue New World,' the duo crafts cinematic, immersive music for inner and outer voyages that are full of warmth, weight and the haunting beauty of the cosmic unknown.

Review: The second Sabres album remains a towering achievement in their short but influential career. Released in 1994, it sees the trio of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns moving far beyond the progressive house leanings of their debut Sabresonic into a dark, richly textured world of breakbeats, dub, ambient and live instrumentation. It's a bold record that feels cinematic in scope and full of unique rhythms. Tracks like 'Tow Truck' and 'Theme' lean into the early rumblings of big beat, while 'Planet D', notably remixed by Portishead, plunges into shadowy, skeletal trip hop. 'Wilmot' lightens the mood with calypso samples, but it fits seamlessly alongside the haunting textures of 'Ballad of Nicky McGuire' and 'Flight Path Estate'. Weatherall's influence as a selector is key-every transition feels curated, and the pacing of the album is masterful. Neither fully techno nor trip hop, too eclectic for IDM and too atmospheric for the club, Haunted Dancehall occupies a singular space. It's one of the most enduring and visionary UK electronic albums of the 90s and remains one of Weatherall's most accomplished studio works.

Review: Since launching his Songwriter Series, Ace Records have often been asked when a Gamble And Huff collection would arrive. With the duo's 60th anniversary approaching and both legends still active, the timing couldn't be better for Love Train: The Songs Of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. This compilation zeroes in on the first decade of their partnership, packing as many signature tunes as a single CD allows. Instead of sticking solely to Philadelphia International classics, it broadens the scope with versions that highlight the enduring versatility of their work. Along with staples from the O'Jays, Lou Rawls and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, the set features takes from Dusty Springfield, The Supremes, Dobie Gray, Gladys Knight & The Pips and even Elvis Presley. Whether blues, reggae or soul, the collection embodies the motto of Gamble, Huff and Thom Bell's Mighty Three publishing: "You'll Never Forget Our Tunes."

Review: Josh Mason-Quinn, better known asonline curator and DJ Somewhere Soul, inaugurates his Rituals series with a 24-hour mixtape of moods, motions and musical markers, drawn from a lifetime of listening and shaped for Re:Warm Records. Volume One maps the arc of a day: from dawn calm to daytime uplift, evening retreat to late-night surrender, weaving jazz, soul, house and global rhythms with the care of a devoted selector. Rather than chasing big names, Mason-Quinn leans into the underground, spotlighting lesser-known and up-and-coming voices alongside familiar names for those already digging.

Review: Joe Gibbs, one of Jamaica's pre-eminent reggae producers, demonstrates his seamless transition from roots to dancehall on this outstanding dub collection. Capturing the sound that dominated Jamaica between 1980 and 1982, the set features 23 heavy, hypnotic versions crafted at his Kingston studio, driven by the dynamic mixing of Gibbs' collaborator, dub engineer Errol Thompson. Celebrated instrumentalists lay down dark and compelling rhythms, giving fresh depth to popular cuts of the day, many of which have remained obscure for over 40 years. Tracks such as 'Jam Down Rock' encapsulate the era's raw dancehall energy, while dubs of major hits reveal Gibbs' ability to reinvent himself continuously. Essential for aficionados of Jamaican music's transformative early-80s period.

Review: Rain Parade's 1985 release marks a defining moment in the band's journey, offering a blend of jangly guitars and psychedelia-laced textures that epitomise the era's alt-rock tendencies. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band delivers a turbulent mix of influences, ranging from the baroque to the brittle, with a certain disjointedness that reflects their internal struggles. The production, led by Steve Gronback, offers a spacious sound that gives space to the atmospheric instrumentation, but the lack of cohesion leaves some tracks feeling as though they're searching for a purpose. Highlights like 'Depending on You' showcase the band's potential, but the overall effect is one of a group caught in transition, unsure of where they're headed. Tracks such as 'Mystic Green' and 'Gone West' encapsulate this feeling of aimless wandering, while 'Invisible People' stands out as an example of the band's unique blend of folk and psychedelia. Though compelling in parts, this album never fully realises its promise.

Review: Since the early 2000s, Wagram Music - a French indie label known for a diversity of releases from across the "cool" spectrum of hip-hop, jazz, soul and funk - has conceived many an ingenious studio compilation. This specialism granted them their toehold in the music industry, and would later also confer them their powers in the domains of publishing and "distro". For now, though, we're firmly camped in with the comps, as their breakout feature, Funk Masters, returns for another round. Long charting the backstreet talents of the likes of Odyssey, Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic, and Anita Ward - among a longer list too great to mention in its entirety - this is an unstoppable series. This time we're in ever more wondrous company, as the Masters contrast to 2022's Vintage Sounds, with further brill selections from Bobby Byrd, T-Connection and Isaac Hayes.

Review: Digging deep in the corners of early synth-pop, this compilation was curated with a deep affection for the bizarre and overlooked that landed in that period between. Compiled by Lush and Mary Chain bassist and one time NME picture desk staffer Phil King, whose past work has unearthed glam, punk and outsider gems, this collection reveals the experimental energy of an era when affordable synthesisers met a DIY, producing a wave of homegrown electronic tracks that rarely reached mainstream recognition. The compilation is a collision of styles and intentions. Design's 'Premonition' pulses with atmosphere and forward-thinking rhythm, while Vision's 'Lucifer's Friend' blends gothic melancholy with synth precision. Richard Bone's 'Alien Girl' and Ian North's 'We're Not Lonely' lean into post-punk abstraction and minimalism. Peta Lily and Michael Process deliver a killer with 'I Am A Time Bomb', a stark, feminist minimal wave piece with a visceral sense of urgency. Gibraltar's The Microbes also are here with the whimsical 'Computer' and Sole Sister's instrumental 'It's Not What You Are But How' echoes modern minimal synth trends. Tracks like 'The Ultimate Warlord' by The Warlord and Dee Jay Bert & Eagle's 'I Am Your Master' fuse disco grooves with sci-fi theatrics. Even the misfires, such as Billy London's cringeworthy 'Woman', lend insight into the era's wild experimentation. Far from a slick or polished collection, All The Young Droids is chaotic, strange and inspired, making it the most unique collections of synthpop we've ever ever encountered.

The vision unfolds across eight tracks, from the opener 'Elysium' and its almost hymn-like grandeur and the airy swathes of synth on 'Horizon', right through to the super sustained notes of 'Utopia' at its end. A meditational listen for sure, but one with plenty of mood peaks and troughs along the way.

Review: Brit glam gods Sweet's glory years in the 70s had a huge impact on generations of rock and pop that followed, with the likes of Motley Crue and Saxon covering them and countless others, from KISS to the Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller, citing their influence. This latest compilation, dug from the private vault of guitarist Andy Scott, is a sizeable raid on their archives, with unreleased versions of a succession of massive smash hit singles including 'Blockbuster', 'Hellraiser', 'Teenage Rampage' and many more. It's easy to hear how the band's knack for anthemic choruses and tight, riff-driven rock has become timeless, and this is the sound of them at the top of their game.

Review: Long mythologised and rarely heard in full, this 2000 concert at the Royal Festival Hall marks what many consider COIL's true live debut-a mesmerising, slow-blooming performance that bridges their austere studio experiments with a more ceremonial presence. With the lineup of John Balance, Peter Christopherson, Thighpaulsandra and Ossian Brown, the group traded chaos for control, donning polar fleece costumes and delivering a set that expands upon the tonal vocabulary of Time Machines while introducing a more dynamic, emotionally nuanced structure. 'Everything Keeps Dissolving' opens in murky reverie, before 'Queens Of The Circulating Library' sees Balance offer a restrained yet haunting vocal-less possessed, more meditative. The two-part 'Chasms' closes the set with depth-charge synths and slow tidal shifts, building tension without climax. Less an industrial confrontation than an alchemical unfolding, the performance remains one of the most quietly potent in the band's catalogue.

Review: Kyoto punks Les Rallizes Denudes denude us of our pretensions with this live recording, taped on July 30 during a brief stopover on route to the Sunset Carnival in Ishikawa. The psych-noise band's lineup at the time included founding members Takashi Mizutani and Takashi Nakamura, joined by Hiroshi Nar (ex-Zunou Keisatsu) on bass and Sami (aka Toshiro Mimaki) on drums. Captured on a Marantz cassette deck with internal mics, this is a raw recording of a power-psych show of force, and despite deleting album cut 'The Last One', it's been as sensitively restored as possible by Makoto Kubota. Jittoku 76 offers a notably different set from '77 Live, containing early versions of 'Dream Again Today' and 'Carnival', not to mention a bruising rework of 'Hibiscus Flower', dragging the track into heavier in-the-moment territory.

Now a full five-piece, the Isle of Wight band channels their explosive live energy into a tighter, more confident sound here on a record that was written in isolation during an intense creative burst. It dives into themes of obsession and all-consuming love and is delivered with visceral guitars, pounding drums and their signature wit. The result is a thrilling mix of raw emotion and playful edge. Review: Bronski Beat's brief but influential presence from London in the mid-80s delivered crucial anthems for queer liberation and synth-pop innovation. This remix collection reimagines the landmark 1984 album that put the band on the map. Gareth Jones, known for his work with Depeche Mode, reshapes 'Junk' into icy electro futurism, while Kinky Roland channels high-energy Euro disco on 'Love and Money'. Meanwhile, Superchumbo's epic house reinterpretation of 'Why?', featuring Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys, injects new urgency into its activist heart. From sultry jazz-inflected takes ('Johnnie Remember Me') to modern club flourishes like The Knocks and Perfume Genius' shimmering spin on 'Smalltown Boy', these tracks freshly affirm the timelessness of Bronski Beat's revolutionary spirit.

Review: Brady Corbet's latest film is brought to life by Daniel Blumberg's ambitious score, which perfectly complements its sweeping narrative and brutalist aesthetic. Blumberg, a British composer and musician, fuses large-scale brass orchestrations, intimate piano melodies and dynamic jazz elements. The film, which spans multiple decades and tells the story of Hungarian architect Laszlo Toth (Adrien Brody) rebuilding his life in post-war America, is mirrored in the music's broad emotional scope. Blumberg worked with a diverse group of avant-garde musicians from across Europe, capturing their performances on location to maintain a raw, organic sound. Collaborators like Axel Dorner (trumpet), Evan Parker (saxophone) and Sophie Agnel (piano) inject the score with an improvisational quality that contrasts beautifully with the meticulously crafted film score. One of the most memorable moments comes during the jazz club scene, where a quartet of jazz musicians, including Pierre Borel and Simon Sieger, deliver an electrifying live performance. The score's most striking shift occurs in the film's 1980s-set Epilogue, where Blumberg teams up with Vince Clarke, transforming the main theme into a synth-driven anthem. The score's breadth, from intimate jazz to grand orchestration, makes it as integral to the film as the visuals themselves.

Review: James K returns on AD 93 with her third album and a refined culmination of over a decade's intuitive music making. The New York-based producer and vocalist's signature hauntological dream pop melds breathy, lilting vocals with intricate guitar and electronic textures, crafting soundscapes that feel like recovered memories - at once delicate, immersive and charged with subtle tension. Building on the urgency of her 2013 debut 'Rum' EP and the prismatic depth of PET, the present offering navigates between the homespun DIY rave ethos and the evolving urban pulse of her city. Tracks like 'Blinkmoth (July Mix)' and 'Collapse (Falling Forward Blissfully All The Time)' reveal her mastery of balancing spacious atmospherics with emotional weight, while the album's carefully layered compositions highlight collaborations that have enriched her sound over the years. With Friend, James K reclaims her place as a singular voice in experimental electronic music, offering a slow-burning, dreamlike journey that both soothes and unsettles.

Review: Maine-based composer Keith Kenniff returns as Goldmund with a work of quiet grace and stillness. These piano-led pieces unfold with the hush of memory, gently evoking the liminal spaces between waking and recollection. 'The One Who Stands Still', 'Before I Sleep' and 'Darnley' are barely-there sketches, yet their minimalism never feels hollow-each note lands with intent, suspended in air like breath. Violinist Scott Moore adds an aching human trace, subtly woven into the texture without ever dominating it. As with much of Kenniff's work, the emotional resonance lies in restraint: no dramatic arcs, no post-rock crescendos, just the patient blooming of tone and decay. Tracks like 'We Begin Anew' and 'Sprig of The Pine' operate like recollections-slightly blurred, incomplete, yet deeply felt. It's a space free from resolution, sitting outside time, where melody becomes suggestion rather than statement. Kenniff's background in scoring for film and documentary is apparent, but the real strength here is in what's left unsaid. It's a study in understatement, where the faintest gestures hold weight, and where silence itself feels like part of the composition. A slow, essential listen for anyone drawn to the intimate edges of ambient and modern classical.

Shutting Down Here
Review: Three decades after first visiting the GRM in Paris, Chicago-born composer and experimental pioneer Jim O'Rourke returns with a single, sprawling piece that fuses musique concrete, acoustic instrumentation, digital processing and a dense dramaturgy of space and silence. 'Shutting Down Here' is the result-an eerie, slowly unfolding 34-minute composition that distils his lifelong negotiation between experimental and melodic sensibilities. The tonal palette is as wide as ever: delicate chamber arrangements dissolve into synthetic warps, tape hiss, and architectural voids. The influence of the INA GRM's electroacoustic history is felt in every glacial transition and shimmer of degraded texture, but O'Rourke's fingerprints are unmistakable. A deeply affecting piece that doesn't so much progress as haunt, drifting between presence and absence with immense control and emotional precision.

Review: Hawksmoor is James McKeown, a Bristol-based electronica artist whose sound draws heavily from 70s and 80s German electronic pioneers like Cluster, Harmonia, and the modular synth-driven hauntological textures associated with Ghost Box and Mount Vernon Arts Lab. His counterpart solo project Hawksmoor incepted eight years ago as an imagined soundtrack to London's six iconic Hawksmoor churches: great baroque houses of god, designed by famous English architect Nicholas Hawksmoor. But this new one breaks from the first's particular focus for an absolutist toying with form: Experiments in Tape is his second release on Lunar Module and it continues to hear the artist forge burbling, modular sublime-scapes.

Review: That we're still talking about this 1982 album all these years later is testament to its timeless brilliance. Talk Talk, blessed to have had Colin Thurston (Duran Duran, David Bowie) as a producer forged an impressive debut album of hip synth pop with pan generational appeal and a cool feel that puts it up there with Depeche Mode. The title track is an undeniable slow banger showcasing singer Mark Hollis' nailing of a glum yet glam vocal delivery and Simon Brenner's stunning synth phrases. Another highlight with bass parts to rival anything by the band Japan is 'Today' - an 80s pop wonder that's an addictive number, which compels you to want to reach out for the album time and time again.

Review: This is Mark Stewart of Pop Group fame's Bowie Blackstar moment. An innovative and expressive masterpiece that sounds ahead of its time. Completed shortly before the Bristol-born legend's untimely passing in April 2023, this is a posthumous release on Daniel Miller's Mute label - a label that's had a strong long-term connection with the fearless visionary. The album was co-produced by another all-time great in British music - Killing Joke's Youth, who is responsible for a swathe of the most interesting new music out there at the moment. The first track to be released from it, 'Memory Of You', shows what an incredible singer Stewart was, with a righteous nod to the Walker Brothers and Sinatra in his timbre. It's a truly welcome surprise and hats off to those releasing this in Mark Stewart's memory.

Review: Ben Liebrand returns to the High Fashion Dance Music series with volume six in the series: first launched in 1982 and revived in 2021 after a decades-long pause, the series blends classic soul, funk and disco with new edits and unreleased exclusives, all woven into one nonstop mixtape project by Liebrand himself. This round leans on work from remixers like Dr Packer, Moplen, Michael Gray, David Morales and Martin Boer, with names like Donna Allen, Nicole, BB&Q Band, T-Connection and Adventures Of Stevie V spotlit like a play made up entirely of main characters. There's a first-time team-up between Liebrand and Timmy Thomas, plus Moplen's long-awaited rework of TJM's 'Small Circle Of Friends'; the set also includes freshly-squeezed bits from Liebrand and Moplen that haven't yet surfaced elsewhere.

Review: Detroit's original shock rocker returns with the surviving members of his 70s-era band, summoning the theatrical grit and garage energy that first made Alice Cooper a household name. The record leans into vintage horror motifs and snarling riffs, reviving the gritty, riff-led sound that once scandalised suburbia. 'Black Mamba' comes fanged and venomous, while 'Wild Ones' lurches forward with bratty abandon. A rare moment of tenderness surfaces on 'See You on the Other Side', haunted by a posthumous appearance from late guitarist Glen Buxton, seamlessly stitched in from unreleased tapes. The band sound unreasonably fresh for a group over half a century in, clearly enjoying the reunion without lapsing into pastiche. Equal parts theatre, throwback and defiance, this is Cooper reminding us that the old blood still runs hot.

Review: After a year spent adrift, Rival Consoles - Ryan Lee West - returns with his ninth full-length, Landscape From Memory, and with it, a rekindled spark. Having stepped away from his self-built studio in Hackney amid the comforts of routine, West embroidered this record from scraps: demos recorded on the road, acoustic sketches caught through a laptop mic, grainy textures brass rubbed against lustrous synth tabula rasa. Leading light 'Catherine', a dedication to his partner, is bare and buoyant, following renewed processive energy. 'In a Trance', 'Known Shape' and 'Gaivotas' further flex West's fondness for propulsive rhythms and irregular sonics.

Review: Silent Poets (Michiharu Shimoda) returns with a collaborative record grounded in the fallout of the last seven years, moving through and chronicling war, genocide, pandemic, social fracture and personal reckoning. Seizing these as an opportunity to reflect on the years since their previous album Dawn, the album coruscates between dub, jazz and spoken word with guests from Ursula Rucker to Rankin Ann to Killa P, Kodama Kazufumi to LS to Okay Kaya, making up a hearty committee of guest features rooted in the dub and downtempo musics that first made Shimoda's name in duo concert with Takahiro Haruno. Now working as a solo artist, but with the backing of Japanese players Gota Yashiki, Seigen Tokuzawa and Yossy Little Noise Weaver, we hear tightly composed, emotionally unguarded material that aims to open a space for protest, mourning and mutual care. With 'Chariot I Plead' and 'Hope' set to appear on the Death Stranding 2 soundtrack, the music is as mournsome and plaintive as one might hope in the light of the tragedies so named, with Celtic-style vocals from Smith leading the guard against Massive Attack strings on the opener.

A rare, feral document of noise at its most combustible: no edits, no overdubs, just raw signal to collective destruction. Incapacitants - Toshiji Mikawa and Fumio Kosakai- open with a wall of full-spectrum chaos, sharp and seismic, whence as the intensity peaks, Mary enters, slicing through with her signature burn of texture and dread, pushing the set into new extremes. Less a blend, more an escalation into dread and void.

Review: Stars of the Lid's debut might lack the sculptural finesse of their later classics but its mood is unmistakably theirs: listless, weightless, slightly faded at the edges. Made with a four-track, borrowed samplers and a shared instinct for stillness, it drifts between raw tape experiments and embryonic drone compositions - half-thoughts suspended in air. 'Down' and 'Lagging' sink into grainy oblivion, while 'The Swellsong' offers a rare hint of light through the murk. Rather than aiming for the transcendence of The Tired Sounds..., this feels grounded, like something captured at night through thin apartment walls. There's charm in how fragile it all sounds - the gear was basic, the fidelity low, but the intention is clear. From student radio collage work to long-form ambient abstraction, this is where that arc begins. It's a modest first step that holds uncanny weight, not for what it says, but for the space it opens. Even now, it feels like a secret - not quite formed, but already whispering something deep.

Review: Best known for his work in Thievery Corporation, Eric Hilton continues to explore his unique mix of laid back sounds with Midnight Ragas. His seventh solo album, this is a collection that feels more like a carefully curated compilation than a standard album, as each track feels like its own little world, with shifting tempos, styles and moods that still somehow all fit together. The opener, 'Life (In The Deep End)', has a bright, funky lounge feel, mixing smooth jazz and spacey atmospheres. 'Leave It All' follows with Puma Ptah's warm, soulful vocals adding a rich human touch. Regular collaborators Natalia Clavier and Kristina Westernik-Dandridge also shine on tracks like 'Je Ne T'aime Plus' and 'Behind My Eyes'. Funkier cuts like 'All I Want' and 'Madame Asha' keep the energy up, while the title track 'Midnight Raga' and 'L'Ocean' lean into the chilled-out, downtempo vibe that fans of Thievery Corporation will instantly recognise. A strong, stylish release that highlights all of Eric Hilton's strengths.

Videoed at the O2 Arena in Prague in May 2023, this widescreen concert film is directed by longtime collaborator Sean Evans, framing Waters' politically charged production as a last stand against late capitalism, climate catastrophe and cultural decay. The setlist spans 20 tracks from across his solo career and Pink Floyd catalogue - 'Comfortably Numb', 'Us & Them', 'The Bar' - all played by a nine-strong touring band. This double CD accompanies a full multi-format set, alongside a quad LP, DVD, Blu-ray and digital version.

Review: Bruce Springsteen has been sitting on these recordings for yearsiwhole records, not sketchesisome finished, some forgotten. Now they finally surface, spanning 1983 to 2018, and offer a different kind of self-portrait: one less polished and more exploratory. The earliest material finds him navigating a path between the haunted quiet of 'Nebraska' and the radio gloss of 'Born in the USA'. Later sessions toy with drum loops, synth beds and orchestral swells. One batch plays like the soundtrack to a film that never existed; another leans into pedal steel and modest country sketches. There are borderland narratives, noir-ish ballads, E Street-style anthems. That New Jersey gritithat plainspoken clarity he's carried since the boardwalk daysiruns through even the softest tracks. He says he made this music to please himself and close friends, and you hear that freedom in its variety: some songs feel raw and just-found, others fully formed. There's no tidy arc, but that's part of its charm. Across seven discs and 82 songs, what emerges isn't a legacy project but something quieter: a window into how a working musician keeps working. You don't come away with answersionly a better sense of how far Springsteen will follow a song just to see where it leads.

Review: Blackpool rock progressors Jethro Tull revisit their formative years with Still Living In The Past, a lavish 5CD and Blu-ray reissue of the main compilation, first out in 1972. Originally pulling on UK-only singles, EP tracks and early oddities recorded between 1968 and 1971, the collection now returns in expanded form, with new stereo and surround mixes by Steven Wilson, previously unheard edits and demos, and a full 1970 Carnegie Hall set spread across two discs. It's a deep dive into Ian Anderson's baroque-folk experiments and mandolin-heavy diversions before Thick As A Brick rewired the band entirely.

Review: Edinburgh-born Barry Can't Swim made a solitary splash with Loner, now reissued some months after its initial release on CD. The album dived deep into the producer's personal landscape, shaped by a year of self-reflection and a global total live show wipeout, finding romance in the contrasts between adolescent aloneness and global superstardom: in the 21st century, we find it a relief to believe they're hardly incompatible. Lead single 'Different' has in the time since set itself apart on dancefloors the world over, its euphoria meeting a patchwork of influences, while always seeming to conjure some wonder and speculation as to the man behind the beats: always navigating identity, (dis)connection and change.

Review: Prepare to chill like you've never chilled before. Not even a nuclear reactor core on the brink of radioactive combustion could refuse the coolant grooves of Antonio Carlos Jobim's 1967 LP Wave, one of the Brazilian songwriter and bossa nova pioneer's lushest and most accomplished orchestral collaborative works. Recorded in just three days at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, it was Jobim's second album for the US market, and his first after the huge cross-Atlantic success of The Composer Of Desafinado Plays and his collaborations with Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra. 'The Red Blouse', 'Triste' and 'Dialogo' indeed evoke the daunt factor of wandering a treeless savannah, with their many G-force string glissandos and cinematic motifs (Claus Ogerman helped Jobim craft sweeping, string-laden versions of his pre-written compositions) setting the stage for an evocative, telluric soundscape.

Review: Few years in pop music were as sonically adventurous and packed with chart-topping flair as 1985. NOW is back to do what they do best: select a wide variety of tunes that covers the time period as well (if not better) than any DJ or streaming platform could. This 4CD collection explores the year's dancefloors and radio waves, featuring 46 full-length, extended and remixed 12" versions that helped define a generation. CD1 opens with the mighty Queen anthem 'One Vision' and rolls through power-duets, stadium anthems and rock-pop hybrids with classics from Philip Bailey & Phil Collins, Eurythmics with Aretha Franklin and Simple Minds. CD2 leans toward club-driven sounds, kicking off with the sprawling 'Welcome To The Pleasuredome' by Frankie Goes To Hollywood and A-ha's timeless 'Take On Me'. The floor stays alive with extended takes from Billy Ocean, The Pointer Sisters and ABC. CD3 brings Hi-NRG heat with Dead Or Alive and Bronski Beat, while movie themes and synth-pop jams add nostalgia. CD4 goes art-pop with Tears For Fears, New Order and Arcadia, with Shep Pettibone's remix work and standout 12" cuts from Howard Jones and Sheila E. The music speaks for itself on this deep and storied collection.

Review: ATA regulars Sam Hobbs and Neil Innes stretch back over two decades of joint musical graft, and The Return Of The Flying Hats shows just how tightly wound that shared rhythm has become. Rooted in Innes's club-hardened taste for Afro-American dancefloor sounds and Hobbs's immersion in everything from New Orleans soul to roots reggae and calypso, the record draws in longtime allies Bob Birch and Chris Dawkins, whose Hammond and guitar works ha e graced British reggae and rock for years. There's a swampy Kingston-New Orleans fusion to 'Grafter' and 'Bust Up', with nods to Lynn Taitt, The Meters and Fatman Riddim Section throughout, and a glorious free-for-all on 'Iron Fist', where Birch plays straight from instinct.

Review: As an artist deeply rooted in Chicago's hip-hop scene, Greene represents the city with authenticity, blending golden-era influences with a modern, soulfully cinematic style. This album is a reflection of his life experiences, his growth as an artist, and his dedication to using his music as a platform for personal expression and social commentary. The title and opening track, 'The Grand Design', sets the tone with its soul-infused production by Phantem and Greene's introspective lyricism. The imagery of Chicago's harsh realities, the constant struggle and the search for meaning are central themes that echo throughout the album. Greene's ability to weave these elements into a cohesive narrative is on full display, especially in the way he captures the city's complex identityia place where beauty and tragedy collide. Throughout the album, Greene teams up with some of the finest producers, including Kenny Keys, Syer, Slot-A and Jay P, whose distinct sounds complement Greene's style. 'Street Lights', delves into the harsh realities of life, from systemic racism to the daily grind of survival. 'Ghetto Babies' offers an emotional and reflective look at the struggles faced by youth in marginalized communities. The soulful production and poignant lyrics make this track a standout moment on the album, with Greene and Bruiser Wolf providing raw, unfiltered perspectives on life in the ghetto. Philmore Greene proving once again why he is one of the most respected and influential voices in contemporary hip-hop.
