Review: This EP is the first collaborative work by Andrea Belfi and Jules Reidy. Berlin-based and hailing from Italy and Australia respectively, the duo blends compositional precision with improvisational freedom. During a residency at Berlin's Callie's-a 19th-century factory turned arts space-they and engineer Marco Anulli crafted four expansive tracks in which Belfi's masterful drumming interlaces with Reidy's shimmering guitars and electronic textures. The opener layers just-intoned guitar figures over delicate brushwork and climaxes with a synthetic surge and tracks like 'Oben' and 'Alto' explore shifting grooves, propulsive rhythms and dynamic soundscapes.

Review: Talk about the perfect meeting of minds. Ellen Arkbro is one of Europe's most sought after contemporary composers and musicians right now, having worked with revered institutions such as London's Barbican, GRM Paris, and Kolner Philharmonie in recent times, to name but a few. Johan Graden stands head and shoulders above almost all the rest in the list of Sweden's finest pianists and modern jazz masterminds.

Together, as you might expect, they make beautiful, sometimes sweet, occasionally mournful, always heartfelt music that refuses to sit in classical or jazz camps, and instead straddles the two while reaching for the stars in search of whole new tones that have never, or rarely, been discovered before. Really special stuff you'd be a fool to ignore, and crazy not to fall head over heels for.

Review: William Basinski and Janek Schaefer make for a long distance collaboration on this much anticipated new album. It has taken the past eight years from conception to final execution but that more than proves worth the wait. Time and duration are recurring themes in their work and during the pandemic yeas in particular those were very much skewed and warped for us all. ". . . on reflection" casts itself free from temporal restraints with delicate piano passages, flickering melodies and drawn out drones that really sink you in deep.

Review: The Disintegration Loops man William Basinski has linked up with acclaimed experimental composer Janek Schaefer for this new collaborative record on Temporary Residence Limited. What they cook up is a suite of very unassuming songs that are all dedicated to the late and great avant-garde composer Harold Budd. The record was eight years in the making and is as timeless as ambient gets with 42 minutes of gently undulating sonic terrain gently and quietly detailed with subtle skill and placid melodies. It is as beautiful as it is absorbing once you really give yourself over to the sounds.

Review: Christina Vantzou and John Also Bennett are CV & JAB and this is their third album together, another creative step forward as they continue to investigate modern classical from their own unique perspective. The album came about after an invitation to play at a UNESCO World Heritage site Santuario Bom do Jesus do Monte in Braga, Portugal, in 2021. The two years since have seen the pair perfect their live experiments and the resulting album is, at its core, influenced by where it was written on the Island of Tenerife with its unique effervescent ambiance.

Review: Taylor Deupree's next project is an ambitious one that finds the artist re-imagining his own well-regarded album from 2002, Stil., in an elaborate acoustic fashion. Sti.ll comes after a long-running collaboration between Deupree and Greyfade's Joseph Branciforte, an arranger and producer who has translated Deupree's focus on meticulously loop designs and hypnotic reputation into the world of chamber music. In place of the original digital sounds are clarinet, vibraphone, cello, double bass, flute, and percussion. The overall rhythm and tone of the original are maintained having been meticulously transcribed and then performed by an ensemble of New York musicians. It is a fascinating work that straddles two worlds to perfection.

Their collaborative album Flint showcases them all their peak with an immersive blend of their own sounds making for a rich soundscape full of subtle depth and warmth. Review: Two years ago, long-term musical collaborators Jules Maxwell and Lisa Gerrard, who first worked together during the latter's time with 4AD signed musical mavericks Dead Can Dance, joined forces with James Chapman to create Burn, a critically acclaimed exploration of "euphoric and inventive" sounds that blurred the boundaries between neo-classical, world music and ambient electronica. One Night in Porto captures the pair's performance - ably assisted by Chapman and a small pool of supplementary musicians - of the album's widescreen tracks at Casa Da Musica in Porto last November. With Gerrard utilising her voice to the full - one minute, soaring and operatic, the next singing more sweetly and soulfully in an entirely different language - and Maxwell playing a grand piano and synthesisers, it's a stunningly atmospheric, uplifting and entertaining affair.

Review: Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell have reimagined their much loved 2021 collaboration Burn in an all new live arena. One Night in Porto was recorded whilst on tour in Portugal towards the end of 2022 and found the pair doing a fine job of recreating the Burn album in a live setting. Rather than try to simply serve it up in recognisable form, they instead used its melodic themes and sonic textures as a starting point to head off into new worlds. After four days of rehearsals they took it on the road and as this recording on the third of the four dates shows, it was a great success.

Review: John Also Bennett's new album Out There in the Middle of Nowhere came to him during a long road trip through South Dakota's desolate badlands. Inspirations from that journey were then taken into the studio along with a lap steel guitar, Yamaha FM synth and field recordings to elicit the same sense of emptiness but potential for menace that he felt in the middle of nowhere. It is a superb evocation of windswept plains, wide open vistas that sparkle under the sun and panoramic landscapes distilled into long-form drones. There is a great cinematic feel to this album - a story telling narrative that sets your mind into overdrive filling in the mental imagery that makes it as beautiful and poignant as anything we've heard for a while.

Review: UK based musical collective Jilk have made a name for themselves as specialists of a particular type of understated electronica. Some, including their own members, have compared it to the sound of a haunted bedroom, which kind of makes sense. It's intimate, there's a deeply humanistic and acoustic bent to the work, and so much tangible atmosphere you can sense the spirits surrounding each arrangement.
Syrup House is no exception to the rule, but we do find the gang bringing elements of analogue house to the fore, and merging this to great effect with dream pop and tender instrumentation. Deep, immersive music that is at once playful yet thoughtful, reflective but forward thinking, and - at times - surprisingly dance floor ('128 Rushes', for example). A quiet epic, for want of phrasing that feels a little less cliched.

That also happened to be the place acclaimed composer Johann Johannsson was living at the time he was asked to score the movie. As always he does so with real aplomb and devastating emotionality. This now classic soundtrack features celestial keyboard sounds, emotive string quartets, clarinet, subtle electronic and plenty of melodic magic that both swells and breaks the heart. Academy Award winner Hildur Gudnadottir plays on the soundtrack with various other of Johann's favourite Icelandic talents.

The Arcades Project is a step backward into more refined, quiet artistry and minimal compositions with a candlelit late-night vibe and engaging and emotional flow. A text by Walter Benjamin formed part of the inspiration for the work and is "a sort of stroll through new ideas emerging from the city life of Paris in the 19th and early 20th century." The resulting sounds delightfully airy and inquisitive.

Review: Whitney Johnson and Lia Kohl's debut album has evolved over several years. Its roots lay in their shared practice of free improvisation on viola and cello and flourished into a unique neophonic orchestral expression. That makes For Translucence both stimulating and soothing - a very alive form of musical meditation where layers of acoustic strings, wispy synths, evocative field recordings and radio and sine waves intertwine and grow while mesmerising you even more. Though always moving and shapeshifting the effect is cathartic as a fine balance is struck between experimentation and cohesion and the organic and the electronic.

Review: Whether or not The Last of the Mohicans would have been made in the same way today comes down to opinion. Back in 1992, all Hollywood wanted was to present historical epics that felt new while still being familiar, and to hell with anyone that might have a problem with the very white Daniel Day Lewis being cast as an indigenous American Indian living in a period of time when lands that belonged to those communities were being stolen by, err, people who didn't look too dissimilar from DDL himself.

More naive, or at least less woke times, in truth the movie is a great adventure-packed romp across the West filled with action, tension, incredible cinematography panning over seemingly endless wilderness and this score by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. Sounding exactly as it should - a mixture of grit, determination, and grandeur rendered with woodwind, strings, and huge percussive sections, it remains one of the movie's triumphs.

Co-produced and mixed by Paul Corley and Nathan Salon, Obsidian delves into darker themes compared to its predecessor, Shiver. The album features ten tracks with evocative titles inspired by ashen landscapes, taking listeners on a sensory journey through erupting flares. Jonsi's masterful layering of vocals over orchestral passages blurs the boundaries between senses, creating a profound and immersive narrative experience.

Kenneth Kirschner - "April 20, 2015" (For Piano & 2 Cellos) (21:19)
Joseph Branciforte - "0123" (For Low String Quartet) (18:50)
Review: The first instalment in a collaborative endeavour by composers Kenneth Kirschner and Joseph Branciforte is nothing short of a concept album. The idea is to explore the possibilities offered by software-based techniques, including algorithmic processes and generative systems, on the creation of tunes made for acoustic instruments. All of which sounds pretty bold and definitely far from your average contemporary classical fare.

Taking inspiration and a direct lead from electronic composition techniques, the result here is two distinct movements that respectively span just short of and a little over 20-minutes. Recorded by pianist Jade Conlee and cellists Mariel Roberts, even without the complex concept explainer this is a masterpiece of discordance and strange, leftfield strings. A place to get lost in, even if you know the way out.

Review: .Keyboardist John Tilbury has been a friend of Terry Riley for decades, and on numerous occasions has performed the Minimalist composer's infamous 'Keyboard Studies' - early cyclical compositions for piano or synthesiser that encourage the performer to improvise and create variations on a theme - in public. He also recorded them for BBC Radio in 1971. The recordings showcased here, first released in 2022 and now finally available again on CD, were recorded in Hamburg, Germany, "at some point between the 1970s and 1995". Rich in natural reverb, slowly shifting melodic motifs and subtle variations, his renditions of the 20-minute-plus 'Keyboard Study #1' and 'Keyboard Study #2' are simply sublime; awe-inspiring translations of two of Riley's most mesmerising early works. Also included is a superbly spacey, synthesiser-powered version of Riley's 1965 composition 'Dorian Reeds'.

Review: Let's face it, Hollywood director Christopher Nolan broke the mould with his re-envisioning of Batman. Taking things closer to the original comic books, themselves forced to 'go soft' by censors in the early-1950s, his films payed direct tribute to the saga's direction from the mid-1970s onwards. A trilogy of movies that were visually arresting, tonally dystopian, and viciously unhinged. It's not clear if we'll ever get a superhero (or anti-hero) film series of that class and calibre again, the world on screen so immersive you quickly feel like a Gotham native. A big part of that universe-building comes through the music, which enlists two of the greatest names in the history of soundtracks to help weave the tales. Hans Zimmer has composed for more than 150 films, James Newton Howard in excess of 100. This compilation of their shared caped crusader efforts proves why they're so well respected.
