Sohrab - "Azadi" (4:22)
Sohrab - "Distant Sun" (7:18)
Review: Kolony Gorky is back with a third EP in less than a year that once again offers some stylish and artful rhythmic interpretations. DDrhode & Sohrab are behind this one and it opens with the airy percussive pattern and suspensory loops of deep and deft jam 'Ghoroob' (Kryptic Rhythm) which becomes dusty downbeat and late-night jaunt when served up as the 'Haleeteh?' version. 'Azadi' has the feel of a sixties spy thriller with its mysterious leads and 'Distant Sun' shuts down with some zoned out and loved-up deep house romance. Another hard-to-define but easy-to-love EP from the already vital Kolony Gorky.

Lakes Of Grass & Gold - "Lament"
Svarte Grenier - "Lightning" (cut)
Review: Reverb, sombre strings, a slight flamenco touch, dynamic range - something so often lost in today's music - together with the kind of heavy metal distortion you'd expect from a band like Mastodon is what makes this Landscape Of Open Eyes 7" such an intriguing and special release. Erik Enocksson introduces his new Lakes Of Grass And Gold project with the support of Digitalis Limited's Svarte Greiner (real name Erik K. Skodvin) and together the two have many years of abstract and acoustic experimentations behind them - if you're a fan of Roll The Dice, but after something with a harder edge, this is it.

Soundtracks For No Film Vol 1

Madteo - "Science Friction"
291out - "Urania (Titoli Di Coda)"
SVN - "Low"
Dresvn - "Moonwalk"
Doc L Junior - "Modul 32"
Review: Soundtracks For No Film Vol. 1 is a rather charming mini album of outer-spatial, conceptual electronics from the always on point Acido Records label, seemingly tasking contributors to deliver arrangements worthy of soundtracking film. Madteo sets the tone with "Science Fiction" a haunting spectral cut with little regard for beat structures that could feasibly sit in alongside his brilliant LP for Sahko last year. Alongside this, the A Side features three short form productions, with 291out's "Urania (Titoli Di Coda)" the highlight, sounding very much like the music you might hear during the end credits of a forgotten 80s sci-fi drama. Complementing this, sometime Sex Tags Mania artist Doc L Junior is given the whole of the B Side to draw out an expansive, epic synthscapes "Modul 2".

Jonny Nash - "Cristina & Carolina" (4:16)
Suzanne Kraft - "Roberto & Giovanni" (3:47)
Review: Jonny Nash's Melody Is Truth label has barely put a foot wrong to date, with the ambient imprint serving up a steady stream of atmospheric, sun-kissed treats. The label's latest missive marks its' first foray into the 7" market, and contains a track apiece from Nash and similarly minded artist Suzanne Kraft. While the latter's woozy, melancholic and gently whistling "Roberto & Giovanni" sounds like a brilliant cross between Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street" and the producer's own take on ambient, it's Nash's A-side, "Cristina & Carolina", that really impresses. Full of his trademark, lilting mid-western guitar lines, echoing audio textures and shuffling, bossa-influenced beats, it's nothing less than audible sunshine.

The Phantom - "Across The River, Beneath The Trees" (12:32)
The Phantom - "Europa" (11:33)
Sad City - "Limbo" (21:56)
Review: The 2nd part of the 4 part split (Schleissen) series welcomes rising stars of the experimental end of modern electronica, with Warsaw's The Phantom and Glagow's Sad City bringing a lush, Fourth World ambience to ErB002.

Emotional Response returns to the Schleissen series with another cross-European exploration of ambient minimalism, film sources, field recordings and fluid soundscapes to create an over-whelming album of beauty for the listener to simply let go and wash away to. This time the influences are softer, but still prevalent, with forbears Satie, Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Russel, Cunningham, Toop and of course of Hassel and Eno all acknowledged and explored through structure and the gentle syncopation of melody or occasional rhythm. With a nod to the film works of Tangerine Dream (or is it Global Communcation?) The Phantom follows up his outstanding LP1 with a move further in to the ethereal. Working as one piece,
Across The River, Beneath The Trees and Europa go beyond the real train with their blissful, floating arrangements creating an atmospheric blanket that consumes you. This is matched by up and coming producer Sad City. With 2 recent EPs on Phonica's Special Editions series as well as his debut on Underwater Peoples, his offering, Limbo, shows an exemplary understanding of sound design, resulting in an immersive, panoramic 18 minutes of pure music. Ambience, drone and modulation interwine and slowly engulf the listener so, as the title suggests, the only option is to be still. A change from SchleiBen 1 then, ErB002 is gentler on the mind and ears, but still challenges you to stop and (un)listen.

Review: New Music New Dance.Mysterious techno abstractionist Sa Pa is leaving an ever-intriguing trail of breadcrumbs on his journeys around the outer limits of what you might deem dance music. Following LPs on Forum and Mana, he helps mint a new Melbourne-based label called Rosa with four uncompromising cuts of experimentation. There's still a technoid pulse guiding the music, while a dubby Basic Channel-esque sensibility hovers between the rhythms, but there's so much more going on here. Evolving, systems-guided textures and tones move across the grid with unnerving clarity, while the beats fall in acute formations that shrug off the restrictive standards of lowest common denominator techno. If you want something fresh to get the cerebellum flexing, look no further.

Music Removed (7:32)
Patterns (2:16)
Vexillations (10:04)
Review: Gary Caruth's Sad City project has progressively attracted ever more praise, not least since his Shapes In Formation album landed last year. Straddling purest ambient and abstract rhythmical electronica with a unique approach that is all his own, Caruth is returning to Emotional Rescue with a 10" that revisits three of the tracks from Shapes In Formation and magnifies them as the longer form versions they originally were. "Music Removed" was a particularly strong track on the album, and this new extended version lets the pneumatic percussion and soulful vocal croon bleed together in the most captivating of ways. "Patterns" sounds even more elegant in its pagan ambient finery with a longer run time, and "Vexillations" flits between poised static and cascading chimes with the deft touch that has come to define the Sad City sound.

Omega Point (Material Object remix)
Review: Astronomically speaking, Sagittarius A is "bright and very compact" radio source at the centre of the Milky Way. It's also the chosen moniker of the mystery artist (perhaps A Sagittarian himself, given the similarity in sound) behind this decidedly cosmic excursion on No. 19. Musically, "Omega Point" sounds like classic Detroit futurism at a deep house tempo, with more than a little early 90s ambient/IDM thrown in. Think claustrophobic chords, undulating acid lines (played down in the unfussy original mix), icy textures and ultra-deep beats. Label owners Material Object remix, emphasizing the original's ambient elements on a sprightly, largely beatless excursion through sci-fi electronics.

Review: A new year brings a third S.A.M. release on his own Delaphine label from Samuel Andre Madsen and a noted change in approach from the Danish producer. Whereas the two previous S.A.M. 12"s have seen Madsen explore the more minimal and dubby strains of techno with aplomb, this third record sees him retain the sense of atmosphere but discard with the need for any rhythmic backbone. It's telling that both tracks here are quite exquisite ambient journeys, suggesting Madsen is currently in the midst of an inspirational production patch. If you need some ambience to set the tone for a mix both tracks here fit the bill perfectly, with the orchestral touches of the B-side our personal favourite.

Review: Following last year's strong cassette release Prisoners Of Gravity on Astro:Dynamics, Dave Saved returns with a new offering for like-minded label Gang Of Ducks, and it finds the Italian producer exploring yet more oblique yet curiously enchanting soundscapes and textures. There is still plenty of melody present to draw you in, not least on opening track "Power & Silence", but still a whisper of rhythm can be found straining underneath the cloying synth tones, such as the strangled shuffle that tries to propel "No Lights". Things take a darker turn in the mechanical murk of "Virtual Feelings", while Aisha Devi drops a powerful and staggered remix of "Power & Silence" and GOD reworks "Virtual Feelings" into a slow but cavernous techno roller with a healthy sprinkling of dust on top.

Review: For their first installment, the Chateau Chepere crew brings a diverse EP from ambient house maestra Rai Scott.
Opening the EP is 'Logical Positivism', a deep, driving and cinematic nod to the forest dance floors of the late 90's. On 'Inspired', Rai brings the club in an introspective, melancholic mood. Slower, steady beats with rolling percussions and dreamy pads to shroud the dancers. Picking up the pace is 'Open Your Eyes', a warm, bitter-sweet piece of house from from her own alter ego Serendipity. The club friendly 2021 rework shifts into an early morning vibe, while keeping it deep and moody. Closing out the EP is the title track 'Anahata Nada', a gorgeous, warm piece of ambient for the chill rooms.

Review: Sacha Khalife, or simply SHCAA, is a multi-talented electronic music producer from Paris. We know him well, however, namely due to an EP that cam out through NYC's Blank Slate back in 2015. Since then, he's put out one more EP through Archipel, but this is the first time we've welcomed him back onto our charts in 2017. Golconde comes through courtesy of the young Sharingtones imprint, and while this is billed as an EP, the release's 11 tracks give the impression of something much more accomplished. Fair enough, each tune is comparatively short to the usual album tracks, but the likes of "Kohinor", a bluesy, laid back slice of exotica, offer some truly deep vibes. Moreover, it's how each tune fits with the next that has got us hooked from the start, where SCHAA chucks in a subtle house blend like it's nothing, making tunes such as "Mimesis" feel like a natural course of events. On the B-side, this curious yet endlessly pleasing blend of acoustic guitars and tropical house waves continues, climaxing with a bottomless pit o minimalistic drones on "Maelstrom", followed by some glitchy IDM vibes on "Kert". Lush.

Review: ESP Institute look to Chee Shimizu for this one. He helmed an incredible Tokyo DJ collective called Discossession alongside Dr Nishimura back in the 2000s and the now dominant ambient talent Jonny Nash was also a part of the gang. They released two EPs which got cult status and for the music on this EP Chee linked with Tokyo guitarist miku-mari a.k.a. Takahiro Matsumura for some live shows at experimental audio/visual event Sacrifice. The multi-hour sessions were recorded and then edited down to the two pieces presented here which are filed with windchimes and Andean chajchas, synths, Tibetan bells and pyramid crystals and make for wondrous listening.

Review: Russian electronic music is most often characterised as dark, bleak, paranoid and desolate. But that's wrong, as various labels have proven in recent times. Andrey Kurokhtin aka Shine Grooves now continues to smash those stereotypes with his bubbly, melodic and happy house music on this Sakskobing debut. Fusing cosmic ambiance, thoughtful synth work and the spirit of early deep house from the Midwest, these tracks all sing and speak to a new age hippiness as much as a heady underground club goer. 'High In The Mountains' is a particularly gorgeous and thought provoking affair before the more blistering grooves of 'Wild Pattern.'

Review: Silent One's ambient output via his own Intimate Silence label might, at first, sound a little too left of field for those searching for some popcorn drones. However, like a good book, this sort of output requires a little patience and little more time to properly enjoy in its fullest form. Mood and feeling are all that counts here, immersing the listener in a deep web of emotional healing that acts and feels like a meditation session, a deeply nourishing sound therapy that evolves majestically from beginning to end. Wide, visual soundscapes form the backbone to a telling story, and one which shares much of the same characteristics as legendary ambient releases by the likes of Fennesz, for imprints like Touch.

Sindh combines old and new worlds on his latest mystic hymns, this time kicking off the A-Biotic label with his dark and alluring four-track EP 'Andaman'. He manages to fuse organic and synthetic materials here as he heads down a darkly introspective path where minimal and IDM, dub and techno all collide in mutant form. 'Jangil' is a real standout with its bubbling halftime rhythms and icy synths backed by distant angelic chorals. The bewitching sounds continue on 'Galathea' which rides back and forth on its heels as subtle sines, scurrying synths and menacing pads all interlock before 'Hinam' locks you in a dense synth stasis and loopy sense of lurching rhythm.
