Review: Icelandic classical, experimental and soundtrack composer Olafur Arnalds steps away from the loops and Broadchurch OSTs to conjure yet another sublime LNT saga. Carefully balancing between contemporary odysseys ("Jomsvikingarimur"), dense futuristic electronic weaves ("Last Remnants"), fuzzy 22nd century pop ("A Noise") sludgy cosmic funk ("Jasmine") and introspective soul ("Our Love Comes Back"), Olafur blows wave after woozy wave of soft sonic conjurations in a way that's broad, detailed and cleverly considered. Good night.

Review: Khruangbin might be the most logical and fitting choice for a Late Night Tales compilation in recent memory. The Texan psychedelic chill artists have always had a sense of the exploratory and unknown running through their blissful grooves, and the fundamental idea behind this series was always about opening up doors to new musical discoveries for listeners.

In many ways, the Houston trio have gone above and beyond. Melding a breadth of sounds that have emerged from an equally diverse set of cultures, we visit Hindi-disco, South Korean rock, African bass, Belarusian folk. Capped off with an exclusive version of Kool & The Gang's 'Summer Madness' conceived by the compilers themselves, it's a case of 15 gateway tracks all of which belong to artists and genres that are crying out for you to dive in.

Review: It's hard to imagine the esteemed Jagjaguwar label without Angel Olsen. The American singer-songwriter feels like a central figure. She epitomises the absolute quality that they put out year-in, year-out. Her long-standing partnership with them has led to her landing a new imprint named somethingscosmic. Here she's given free reign to release when and how she wants, with help from Jagjaguwar. An absolute dream for her no doubt. This, the second release on somethingscosmic, it's billed as a compilation reimagined as a dialogue; the A-side features artists chosen by Olsen, with each artist choosing their own song for the collection. Side B is a collection of songs from the same artists, but chosen by Olsen and recorded by her. Of the artists on there, Poppy Jean Crawford's 'Glamorous' is dark post-punk with a Kills-esque vocal... it feels like what the definition of rock n' roll should be. Meanwhile, Coffin Prick's 'Blood' (Yep, you read that right... what a band name!) is a great example of reckless psychedelic fuzz. And Sarah Grace White has a stunning, magnetic voice and the music is pared back to let it shine at the forefront of the mix. Olsen clearly has A&R clout and magical release ideas - long may her new venture thrive.

Review: Renowned for his seminal work with acts such as The Moody Boys, 400 Blows, and The KLF, the incomparable Tony Thorpe compiles this astutely curated, meticulous collection of 16 rare and sought-after post-punk era cuts that the maestro would regularly spin at parties, making them his personal pile of niche gems. Featuring tracks from Public Image Ltd, Mark Stewart and The Maffia, Basement 5, 23 Skidoo, and African Headcharge, to name but a small handful, Post Punk Theory arrives spread out across 2xLP and includes a 40-page fanzine booklet written by Matt Annis with photographs by Simon Pyke and Ian Brodie. Review: The Vacant Lots is a Brooklyn based duo who drops their new album this Autumn. It was written under isolation during the Covid pandemic and is quite possibly Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen's best work yet. The eight tunes might be minimal in design but they are maximum in intent and intensity with minimalist post-punk/synth-pop sounds all coming on strong. Over the top of the sounds comes smart, pithy lyrics with plenty of guitar agues and a darkness that brings to mind New Order and Jesus And Mary Chain. Add in the ever present spirt of New York and you have a fine album.

Review: The US took to The Clash much more than their main rivals the Sex Pistols, not least because the latter were already imploding by the time they reched its shores. Strummer and co's regular visits to New York were always a media event - Martin Scorcese even invited them to make cameo appearanmces in his 'King of Comedy' on one - and always accompanied by incendiary live shows. This one, recorded for radio at The Palladium in September 79, is from the relatively early part of their career, harder rocking than some although there is a reggae cover in the shape of 'Police and Thieves' even here, while mainly it's hard hitting guitar slinging anthems like 'I Fought The Law' and 'London Calling'.

Review: Formed in 2015 by Cathy Lucas, Vanishing Twin is a fantastic band for those who love music that floats between real and imagined worlds. They have a fearless sound that take sin aspects of Afro, world, jazz, soul, funk and psych as well as lashing of dubby rhythms. This album came late last year and finally makes its way on to wax - in the meantime the band also dropped a cassette only album Pensiero Magico. This one is a more MPB and experimental take on rock and Latin with breezy grooves next to darker atmospheric tracks.

Review: Secret Superstar Sounds, courtesy of Soul Jazz, offers an eclectic and excellent collection of oddball punk and powerpop rare cuts from little-known bands from the late 70s, including but not limited to The Squares, The Meanies, The Monitors, Plummet Airline, and Krypton Tunes. Falling between the cracks of punk, new wave and post-punk, these unfairly overlooked and forgotten to time gems came from a slew of DIY ethos purists inspired by the messaging of bands like The Desperate Bicycles, Sniffing Glue fanzine and early UK punk labels like Stiff, Chiswick and Rough Trade, recording everything in-house, then sending their recordings to the likes of John Peel and labels with hopes of some airplay or recognition, little of which came. A long-lost micro-genre of unfairly forgotten underground punk (but not punk) gems awaits.

Review: Out of print for over 15 years, the Soul Jazz distributed Do It Yourself compilation offers up a bevy of both essential and niche acts from the realms of punk, post-punk, punk-funk, dance-punk and even further afield electronic experimentations where the term "punk" becomes utterly redundant. All UK artists recorded between the late 70s and 80s, the collection sonically details the aftermath of the British punk movement in real time, complete with legacy names such as Buzzcocks, A Certain Ratio and The Last Gang to Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and even Throbbing Gristle. Housed in a gatefold sleeve and spread across translucent orange vinyl 2xLP, the collection has been fully remastered and features extensive sleevenotes and photography as well as interviews with key behind-the-scene players, providing a unique insight into just how much the landscape of independent music changed after the advent of punk.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Post punk and dance music can be perfect bedmates simply because they are so often one and the same thing. Or rather the former is a form of the latter, with post punk's audio iconography frequently involving a rolling approach to rhythms, subtleties given room to shine and a sense of constant build about the atmospherics. All of which are also cornerstones of electronic club sounds, too.

Here then Soul Jazz adds to its extensive and consistently-impressive back catalogue of genre-themed compilations with a collection of tracks that take their lead from electro pop, industrial, punk, techno and more. Featuring a host of contemporary artists, including LA DIYers Automatic, German sonic artists Toresch and Philippines-via-California cult hero Vex Ruffin, it's refreshingly modern proof of how vital this stylistic meeting point is.

Review: You could probably write a dissertation, if not full thesis, on the symbolism of this album. The biggest name in British chart pop compilations, NOW, turns its hand to spotlighting less obvious tracks from the decade that gave birth to the entire franchise. What this reflects, in terms of what constitutes 'popular' music today, and the questionable relevance of the UK Top 40, is a fascinating train of thought.
Musically speaking, the curators have done a decent job in selecting a broad range of artists, bands and sounds from the fertile grounds of the 1980s. Plenty here are household names - The Stranglers, Devo, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Smiths, Eurythmics, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. Nevertheless, you won't find 'Sweet Dreams' on the track list, and instead rarer archive material is allowed to shine: 'Vicious Games' rather than 'Oh Yeah' by Yello, The Cure's stunning 'A Forest' - we could go on.

Review: Cabaret Sauvage is one of the most unique venues in the world. Situated in Park de la Villette in north-central Paris, the circus-styled institution hosts live gigs and club events featuring celebrated artists from across the globe, and has been doing this since first opening in 1997. One evening, the Tricatel crew decided to take over the space for a showcase of live bands, hence us now being able to get hands on this soon-to-be collector's item. Paying tribute to what was an incredible night of incredibly varied music, the tracks list here represents all the artists who played at the date, and runs through a vast gamut of styles. The male-chorus and psyche pop rock of Leo Blomov, Chassol's neo-classical-opera-experimentations, the lo fi country-folk-swing of Ingrid Caven, and the bouncing synthdom of Bertrand Burgalat being a few highlights.

Review: A box office flop at the time of its release in 1995 - only recouping around $6million of its $25million budget - Tank Girl has since become a cult classic of the post-apocalyptic science fiction canon. Popularised thanks to its strong feminist messages and vivid construction of a universe, the foundations of which were found in a comic book series of the same namer, the soundtrack is both of its time and every bit as high impact as the flick. From Bjork's moody and abrasive 'Army of Me', to the disrupted lo-fi rock & roll of Hole's 'Drown Soda', Ice T's typically snarling and sinister 'Big Gun', and the trip hop landmark 'Roads' by Portishead, the credits read like a who's who of 1990s cool. And this emphasises just how on point Tank Girl was, even if we didn't all seem ready to acknowledge it back then.

Review: Guy Richie's Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels may well be a film very much from a certain era but a fantastic one it remains. It is now a quarter of a century old and part of the reason it struck such a chord upon release was the super cool and occasionally bad-ass soundtrack. It now gets a special anniversary reissue on four sides of translucent red wax with all the original standouts present and correct - from the smooth jungle of E Z Rollers to the macing James Brown cut 'The Boss' via Junior Murvin's smokers' anthem 'Police & Thieves', reliving this one is always well worth it.

It's a compilation spotlighting fresh music from emerging artists rooted in Hawai'i after the label has traditionally focused on reissuing overlooked gems from the 1970s and 1980s. Now they mark a shift towards supporting today's voices. Featuring artists who call Hawai'i home-some staying, others returning after venturing elsewhere-the compilation celebrates their commitment to shaping the island's contemporary sound. Through their music, they express identity, heritage and experience while also offering a healthy respect for the past.

Review: The Apples in Stereo, Beulah, Circulatory System, Elf Power, The Minders, Neutral Milk Hotel, of Montreal, and The Olivia Tremor Control. The list could go on, but our point will always be the same - whatever page you turn to first, the story of Elephant 6 is one of a sorely under-referenced musical universe of multi-genre music that's hard to move beyond once you find it. The 2022 documentary is testimony to that, and now the official soundtrack, featuring many of the loose collective's finest affiliates and associates, offers us a chance to take a broad selection home. And we really do mean broad. Lo fi garage rock, weirdo guitar, surf, rock 'n' roll, grunge, alt, leftfield and plenty more can be heard in this marvellous brew. A genuine delight from start to finish, this one's essential.

Review: It's almost Christmas time which of course means we get inundated with plenty of brilliantly seasonal albums to add a touch of sonic warmth and festivities to your parties. This one is a mix of more modern-leaning collections of Christmas sounds from favourites like Ed Sheehan and Kelly Clarkson next to more traditional names like Michael Buble, Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway and The Pogues. It does on four sides of vinyl and really will do the trick to get you in the mood while you over eat and drink too much for a good few weeks this December.

Review: You could probably buy every Soul Jazz compilation known to humankind and come out on top of most other people's record collections. As a label, the crew's ability to track down, rediscover, unearth, and reappraise archive music, and package things up as part of a spellbinding collection of like sounds, is remarkable, and the imprint must be up there with the best curated on the planet. The output is so good, in fact, that here we are pushing a reissue of the 2002 compilation, In The Beginning There Was Rhythm. Pieced together by Stuart Baker and Adrian Self, it's a wonderful trip into the deceptively varied world of UK post punk during its nascent, formative years. Informed by dub, psychedelia, punk, synth, samples and more, it's a celebration of a genre that proves you could spend all day listening and not really hear the same type of tune twice.

Review: Telling the story of a teenage girl battling thyroid cancer which has spread to her lungs, and the amputee osteosarcoma survivor she meets and falls in love with at the support group her mother encourages (forces) her to attend, suffice to say emotions run high in The Fault In Our Stars. A bonafide tearjerker, both in its original novel and subsequent 2014 movie form, anyone who wasn't expecting the score to the latter to be filled with huge rousing and heartrending indie pop was kidding themselves. Here we have it, then, opening on Ed Sheeran, into Jake Bugg, Kodaline, Lykki Li, M83, Ray Lamontagne and Charli XCX, the track list reads like a map of Gen Z coming of age with a few treats for millennials, and plays out like a radio station that lives up to the 'killer no filler' claim. Providing, that is, you're moved by stadium-sized balladry, sing-along chart dance and shoegaze-y electronica.

Review: You don't need to have seen the summer blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine to know exactly what it's like. Alarm bells began ringing years ago at Marvel over the decline of interest around a universe which, in cinematic terms at least, seems to have no limits or qualms about churning out product, no matter the quality. Things have got worse since, albeit with a few exceptions - like the Deadpool franchise. The wisecracking anti-hero's flicks go for a more adult jugular than many comic book adaptations, and therefore the character makes an ideal partner for the X-Men's blade-fingered menace, Wolverine. Together, they make an odd couple that were never going to be in a straight-up superhero talkie. Instead, it's tangible tongue-in-cheek at times, lighting paced, and delightfully self-aware stuff that needs a soundtrack running between over-cooked chart emo to classic croonerville, 1980s pop rock to rousing r&b. Here you go then.

Best known for being spearheaded by US indie outfit LDC Sound system, it combined dance, disco, wave, post-punk and more into a party-ready sound that found favour with both ravers and guitar heads. This second collection from the German label highlights the best of music they put out back then with names like In Flagranti, label co-founder Munk, Nancy Whang & Bonar Bradberry and many more all present and correct.

Review: Suicide's Alan Vega is a cult figure in electronic circles. The band was never going to achieve any sort of commercial success but in 1983 they had a jolly good go with this album. It is a collab between Vega and Ric Ocasek of The Cars and Ministry's Al Jourgenson. It never made any moves in the charts the likes but did end up being an album revered by fans. It was also critically acclaimed and now gets a first ever reissue on lovely highlighter yellow vinyl.

Review: Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale, Doug Yule, Maureen Tucker and - a little later - Nico broke the mould with their efforts as The Velvet Underground. The Andy Warhol-managed and produced cult rock icons helped lay the foundations for New Wave and punk about a decade before either sound really started to make inroads in any circles, let alone commercial ones. And, listening back to any of their records now, the music itself isn't just a significant bookmark theoretically: it all still sounds incredible today.

Todd Haynes' highly recommendable documentary charts at least some of that story in a commendable way, more so when you consider it arrived around 50 years after the original lineup disbanded. Using interviews with surviving members Cale and Tucker, alongside archive footage, music and other material, it paints a vivid portrait of an equally vivid band. With tracks by them in question, Bo Diddley, The Primitives and The Diablos, this OST helps colour that picture, and era, properly.

Review: Say what you will about the idea of a Best Of, sometimes it really does pay to have a good proportion of 'the hits' in one place. Now Playing might be based around a relatively obvious playlist if you've been a fan of the band longer than a couple of minutes, centring as it does on the group's late era classics, but when the late career classics are this good who the hell cares? Well, maybe Loaded and The Velvet Underground & Nico, original LPs that contribute the vast majority of what's here. Anthems like 'Sweet Jane', 'Who Loves the Sun', 'I'm Waiting For the Man', 'Femme Fatale' and 'I'll be Your Mirror' dominate here, and those presented as live recordings are particularly unmissable. Once again, then, here's proof of why Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Angus MacLise, Moe Tucker and Nico remain among the most influential troupes of all time.

Review: Iconic rock outfit The Velvet Underground fronted by the super cool Lou Reed were pioneers of the form whose influence still looms large to this day. They're also the latest of many acts to get the Now Playing 'best of' treatment, featuring iconic songs such as the brilliant 'Sweet Jane' and more hard-hitting 'Rock and Roll', both of which get served up in their full-length versions. Overall this record which comes on a nice clear vinyl pressing, showcases the American band's signature blend of rock, folk and experimental sound and it sounds as relevant and rewarding as ever.

Review: Recorded in 1992 in London and New York, Voyager 1 is a unique live album by UK outfit The Verve-then known simply as Verve-that was cunningly designed to resemble a bootleg but was officially released to introduce the band to US audiences via Virgin's indie label Vernon Yard. It actually predates their debut album A Storm in Heaven, but the set captures the band's raw, psychedelic energy - we're well before the Britpop years, when Ashcroft and co were in a decidedly more sonically swampy, shoegaze groove - with standout versions of 'She's A Superstar,' the hypnotic early single 'Gravity Grave' and 'Slide Away.' Also included is 'South Pacific,' which remained unreleased in studio form for decades, proving to be a swirling, oceanic closer, faithfully remastered from analogue tapes at Abbey Road Studios.

Review: Adorning his long hair on the cover, Kurt Vile returns with his seventh solo album Bottle It In which has the charm of a rare, golden find inside of a dusty Seattle record store. At 13 tracks long, interestingly enough three clock in at an epic 10 minutes long. It's an album that graces various themes of dark psyche within dreamy soundscapes of crackles and feedback underneath an ensemble of roomy drums, finger-picking guitars and other folky sentimentalities. There's mellifluous flow to the record, with the hip lyrical content of "Cold Was The Wind" a highlight and stand out alongside the washed out beach blues of "Skinny Mini" and unique album closer "(Bottle Back)".

He is a veteran of many solo albums but here he makes his first outing on a major label, happily, that doesn't do much to distil his sound. The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer heads in all manner of new directions that will appeal to fans old and new. The result stake in meditative sounds with plenty of laid back charm and a great sense of Vile spirit that remains utterly unique. Rob Schnapf's production, too, helps elevate the record.

Review: It has been some time since we had new stuff from Kurt Vile, and in many ways what's here isn't completely fresh. Not that we're complaining. Take 'Another Good Year For the Roses', for example, featuring Stella Mozgawa and Cate Le Bon, with the latter also credited as producer. Although this is the first time we've heard it, the track has roots in 2019, when those three names, alongside Rob Laakso, Chris Cohen and Adam Langellotti, were together at Stinson Beach, California. Four years later it was finally finished and leads this selection of tunes which also includes 'Constant Repeat', a wonderful cover of Charli XCX, and the epic title piece 'Back To The Moon'. Side notes done, the package sounds like everything you've fallen in love with Vile for over the years - sharp, almost-jarringly honesty writing, beautiful instrumentation with psychedelic and beachside hues equally audible.
